students for professional careers that require both the business knowledge and the technical skills to design, build and deliver competitive computer-based solutions. Computer and information systems managers play a vital role in the technological direction of their organizations and must stay abreast of the latest technology to ensure the organization does not lag behind its competitors.

School of AccountingAccreditation Both the JMU College of Business and the School of Accounting are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), an award that puts us in the top 2% business programs in the world.

Reputation The professional services industry is dominated by four international accounting firms (called the Big-4). JMU has been consistently

ranked by these firms in the highest tier of schools that supply them with the largest number of best-quality students.

CPA Exam On the 2010 CPA Exam, JMU graduates of the Master of Science in Accounting program had the highest pass rate in the country among candidates with advanced degrees. The overall pass rate was 94%.

COB ADVANTAGE Integrated Functional SystemsAll students at the COB take COB 300: Integrated Functional Systems, a team-taught integrated course led by professors from every business discipline. This unique synthesis prepares students to understand the interrelations of business systems and speak the language of finance, management, marketing and operations, an incredible advantage over students from other schools.

The JMU Capital Markets LabPrepares students interested in banking and finance for Wall Street via access to real-time financial data and information technology. It is equipped with 12 Bloomberg terminals, a professional investment computer system created for the financial marketplace. It also features two 50-inch flat panel displays with cable news feeds and a wide range of systems and databases that allow students to access a wealth of information.

With the access to the same tools as professionals, the COB students manage a portion of the JMU endowment known as the Madision Investment Fund (MIF), a internationally recognized student-run equity investment fund that regularly outperforms more than 300 student funds from around the globe. The hands-on learning gives the COB students an invaluable leg-up during job search.

WHAT DO OUR PROFESSORS SAY?“COB 300 lets the overlap that actually exists in business happen in the classroom and become a productive learning experience. It’s an integrative course bringing together management, marketing, operations and finance to understand how one relates to the other to achieve a final business objective.”

COLLEGE OF INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

The JMU College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE) is comprised of Department of Computer Science, Department of Engineering and Department of Integrated Science and Technology. Together, they offer a range of cutting-edge programs to educate students for the opportunities of tomorrow.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE The degree program puts students in the middle of the information revolution where they study technological advances such as object-oriented software, communication networks, multimedia systems, information security, and artificial intelligence.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING Unlike other engineering programs that split into separate departments that address the sub-disciplines of the engineering profession, JMU’s ABET-accredited engineering program offers a single, integrated engineering degree. This program focuses on sustainability, design, and systems analysis in order to educate and train “engineering generalists” who can address the wide range of ever-changing engineering challenges of the 21st century.

Page 13: 2014-15 THE ULTIMATE AMERICAN UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE · 2014-06-27 · #5 America’s best college town Travel + Leisure magazine, 2013 Top 10 mountain bike towns in USA USA Today,

11

DEPARTMENT OF INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (ISAT)ISAT provides a general science education, or in other words, a liberal arts education in technology. Students study all the traditional areas of science (math, chemistry, physics, and biology), but they don’t take traditional science and math courses. ISAT courses integrate the sciences into technology fields or combine two or more traditional fields to teach students methods of analysis.

ISAT is a good choice if a student does not want to narrowly focus on a certain field. For example, ISAT often appeals to students who are also thinking of studying engineering. Both

programs have a decidedly practical bent because they are both applied science programs that deal with real-world solutions to problems. ISAT is broader than a traditional engineering program because it includes biology, chemistry, computer science, and some management and business topics.

Science generalists are needed in our society and many companies are looking for students with that kind of training. ISAT grads enjoy a lot of flexibility in getting jobs. There are also students who have completed ISAT and gone on to get Master’s degrees in engineering.

COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS

The JMU College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) is different from CISE in its focus on more traditional science and mathematics fields, including biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics and physics. Learning science and mathematics by doing is what the programs at CSM are all about. Undergraduate students at CSM are provided hands-on opportunities to do research with cutting-edge equipment that most other schools reserve for graduate students.

As a prime example of the attention to undergraduate teaching and research at JMU, the Bioscience Building is home to more than 800 undergraduate biology majors.

The building resembles a miniature ecosystem with three floors each representing the earth, canopy and sky. A tall mural of a DNA helix with organisms representing each theme decorates every floor, exemplifying the main theme of the building: Biology on Display.

Inside the building, there are many state-of-the-art features that will contribute to learning. Some examples include a lab where futuristic fume hoods can descend from the ceiling so students can safely perform experiments, and a classroom that enables projection of images from any microscope so that the professor and the studens in the classroom do not have to move around to share an important finding.

RESOURCES FOR SUCCESS

THE JMU LIBRARIESThe JMU Libraries include the 1 Carrier Library and two branches, the Music Library and 2 Rose Library. Together they host:

§ close to 500,000 volumes of books

§ over 165,000 e-book titles

§ over 110,000 e-journal titles

§ over 43,000 volumes of audiovisuals, and many more.

JMU librarians work with academic departments to provide subject-specific library instruction, research consultation, and to develop collections. The award-winning Information Literacy program provides students with skills for lifelong learning.

EXCLUSIVE LEARNING RESOURCES3 Science on a Sphere With a grant from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), JMU is the first university in the U.S. to acquire Science on a Sphere (SOS), a sphere-shaped visualization tool that uses processed satellite data to create a six-foot diameter sphere through four projectors and enable the observer to have the illusion of seeing Earth from an astronaut’s perspective in space. The conventional objective of SOS is an educational tool to expose the audience to issues and fundamentals of science. Accordingly, SOS comes with dozens of “movies” and images depicting environmental processes of Earth, such as global climate effects and changes in land formations.

3D Printing ClassroomThe JMU 3-SPACE is the first true 3D-printing college classroom in the nation that is open to all students and departments, not just the engineering students or special centers. A one-credit general education course using this new facility will be implemented across the university beginning October 2014.

CAREER PLANNING The Office of Career and Academic Planning sponsors a number of career fair events each year to provide students in all majors with the opportunity to interact with employers and obtain employment-related information. More than 250 companies participated the 2013 Fall career fair.

The Career Guide to JMU Majors provides a sampling of career options for each of the majors offered at JMU. The Career Guide also provides major specific information on internship opportunities, characteristics of successful students, and websites for further exploration of potential careers.

Recruit-A-Duke is JMU’s online career services management system that provides students with access to internships, full-time jobs, career fairs, workshops, information sessions, and more.

The Practice Interview Program helps students gain valuable experience interviewing with actual employers without leaving campus.

International Student Career Day (ISCD) is a one-day program specifically designed to assist international students who are considering pursuing internships or jobs in the US after graduation. ISCD will answer questions such as:

§ How can I find a job in the U.S. after I graduate?

§ How should I begin looking? What do I need to know?

§ Whom can I talk with to help me with this process?

§ How will my immigration status affect my opportunities?

JMU students can also access InterviewStream, a web-based interviewing practice application, to conduct free, online practice interviews with a webcam.

OFF-CAMPUS LIVING: QUICK FACTSAbout 60% of JMU students live off campus in students-exclusive apartment complexes that are within a 3km radius of campus.

Bus routes run continuously between campus and off-campus complexes and are free for all students. JMU’s campus is the central hub for all routes.

Students will be asked to sign either an individual or group lease. Lease lengths vary but are usually 12 months.

Average rent per student per month is between $300 and $500 and includes high-speed internet, cable, electricity and utilities.

Individuals spend between $50 and $80 per week on food.

JMU meal plans are available for off-campus residents.

Many complexes arrange social events and have club houses.

Due to limited on-campus housing availability JMU cannot guarantee on-campus housing. Applicants can request on-campus housing at time of application. Requests cannot be guaranteed, but will be accommodated depending on availability.

Students living on campus must find alternative arrangements during semester and holiday breaks when residence halls are closed. Students who do not secure housing (on or off campus) prior to arrival should budget for additional hotel costs while they search for housing upon arrival.

DINING AT JMU

Being away from home doesn’t mean you have to miss homemade dishes. With more than 20 on-campus dining facilities, JMU offers the #2 Best Campus Food in the United States (Princeton Review, 2013) - from American and international cuisines, to world-class coffee, desert and snacks.

1 D-HALL Known by the student population as D-Hall, JMU’s original buffet-style dining hall is an essential visit. It features eight different cuisine areas: Café Roma, Deli, Produce Market, Sizzles, Southern Bistro, Sweets, and Veggie Variations, offering not only a wide selection of savoury options, but also a selection of nutritious and vegetarian/vegan alternatives.

2 E-HALL Serving as an east-campus sister facility to D-Hall, the East Campus Dining Hall, or E-Hall, is a 700-seat modern buffet-style dining facility that also hosts eight distinct cuisine areas: bakery, bistro, deli, grill, hearth oven, produce market, and Tandoori International.

TOP DOG CAFÉTop Dog Café, a food-court style eatery, is a favorite to international students. Four unique venues –Mongolian Grill, Sushi, Madison Bread Company, and Grille Works – offer an international mix of traditional stir-fry Asian dishes, sushi and sashimi, signature Italian-style Panini, and a wide variety of American cuisine.

FESTIVALPositioned atop JMU’s east-campus, Festival not only offers not only an impressive selection of foods but also a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Students can find traditional American food as well as authentic Mediterranean and Chinese dishes in this food-court style dining location.

RESTAURANTS AND CAFESIn addition to the selection of dining locations unique to the JMU campus, there is also a vast selection of chain restaurants and cafes that we know and love, including Starbucks, Java City, Chick-fil-A, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Quizno’s.
