After finishing the 2013-14 season at 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers went on to place fourth at the SoCon Championships. The Apps saw Dominic Parisi and Dylan Cottrell win their respective weight classes at 125 and 149-pounds, respectively, earning spots at the 2014 nCAA Championships in Oklahoma City.

Appalachian returns both of its nCAA Qualifiers in Parisi and Cottrell for the 2014-15 season where they will look to build on its successes last season and advance even further this time around. Zack strickland is another Mountaineer to keep and eye on. Strickland was a 2013 nCAA Qualifier at the 165-weight class but has decided to cut down to 157 for the upcoming season where head coach JohnMark Bentley be-lieves he will be competitive at the conference and national level.

Also returning to Bentley’s squad is heavyweight Denzel Dejournette. Dejournette returns as a team captain who is primed to have a breakout season after an impressive cam-paign a year ago.

Bentley enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Moun-taineers with an overall record of 45-40-1. Assistant coach Matt fisk returns for his fifth year as a part of the Mountain-eer coaching staff.

Appalachian added frank hickman as an assistant coach. Hickman was a standout wrestler for Bloomsburg University and spent last season as an assistant coach for the Compound Wrestling Club.

The Mountaineers are set to be highly competitive in several weight classes and contenders in the Southern Conference as well as at the national Level.

125The Mountaineers have one of their most seasoned veterans returning at the 125 weight class in three-year starter Domi-nic Parisi. Parisi is a two-time national qualifier, and has been to the round of 12 at the nCAA Championships. As a team leader and captain, Parisi brings a wealth of experience to a team that will be looking for him to lead them throughout the season. Bentley believes Parisi only gets better as the sea-son goes on and wrestles his best at the end of the year when it matters most. Backing up Parisi is true-freshman Jacob grigg. Grigg is an extremely talented wrestler coming out of high school where he was a two-time n.C. State Champion and All-American. Bentley has confidence in Grigg stepping in if Parisi has to miss a match.

133Probable starter at the 133 weight class is going to be redshirt-sophomore Vito Pasone. Pasone has been behind Parisi at 125 in previous years but is now moving up. Bentley believes although a little under-sized, Pasone will be competi-tive because of the experience he gained last season. Chal-lenging Pasone for the spot will be a pair of freshmen, Payton shuford and Demetreus Kostis. 141True-freshman Michael Longo will look to headline the 141 spot. Longo was a high school All-American and top-100 recruit in the nation. Bentley says the Mountaineers are fortunate to be able to bring a wrestler of his caliber into the program and expects him to be competitive right away. Back-ing him up will either be Javon Johnson who saw some mat time last season or Kostis if he is unble to crack the 133 lineup spot.

him into the lineup.

184The Mountaineers will start senior nick Vetell who is a return-ing starter from last season. Bentley credits vetell with lots of growth in the off season and expects him to be in contention for a conference championship in his senior season. 197tyler Radford will reclaim his starting role at 197 after injurying his ankle last season. The redshirt-sophomore has improved a lot of his weaknesses and is expected to vie for a conference championship.

HWTRedshirt-sophmore Denzel Dejournette had an oustanding season last year with several quality wins, including a regular season win over the eventual SoCon champion. Dejournette is a team captain and will lead the team from the heavy-weight spot. Bentley is expecting big things from the north Carolina native in his second campaign at Appalachian.

Final Word from Coach Bentley“Overall, our team outlook with all the pieces that we have in place, will allow us to compete for a conference champion-ship in the SoCon. We have a really good lineup of starting guys and some talented young guys that we are excited about.”

149Highligting this class is no. 10 nationally ranked redshirt-sophmore Dylan Cottrell. Cottrell, a team captain, was a Southern Conference Champion last season and starts the year ranked highly at the 149 weight class. He comes into the season with a chip on his shoulder after last season’s national tournament, where he felt he under-achieved. Cottrell has put in the off-season work and is ready to make some noise in the upcoming season.

157Zack strickland a two-year returning starter decided during the off season to cut down into the 157 class from 165, where he was a national qualifier in 2013. Bentley believes that Strickland will be a force to be reckoned with at 157 and will form a good one-two punch with him and Cottrell back-to-back. Fighting for the spot to back him up are two freshmen, Dain steffany and Drake Patrum.

165The front runner for the starting 165 spot is redshirt-freshman nick Kee. Kee is coming off of a great redshirt year after win-ning several open tournaments and placing at the redshirt national open championship. Kee competed most of his matches at 174 last season, but is dropping down to 165 where coach Bentley is confident that he will compete for a Southern Conference championship. David Peters-Logue and Colton Jackson are two true-freashmen who are looking to see mat time behind Kee.

174forrest Przybysz is going to fill the starting role at 174 as a redshirt-freshman. Przybysz was a high school All-American and three-time state champion. He attended naval Academy Prep School before redshirting his first season at Appalachian. The Mountaineer coaching staff is looking forward to getting

Bentley coached the 2013-14 Mountain-eers to a fourth-place regular season and tournament finish in the Southern Confer-ence. For the second consecutive year, Bentley had two wrestlers advance to the nCAA Wrestling Championships. Both Dylan Cottrell and Dominic Parisi were individual SoCon Champions at 149 and 125 pounds, respectively, while also earning all-Confer-ence. Cottrell earned SoCon Freshman of the year and was a two-time Wrestler of the Week for his efforts. Cottrell and vito Pasone were named to the all-Freshman team. Coming off of a SoCon title in 2012, Bentley led the Mountaineers to an 8-6 overall mark and a 5-2 record within the conference – good for a second-place regular season finish. Both Dominic Parisi and Zack Strickland advanced to the 2013 nCAA Wrestling championships as at-large selections for their seasons at 125 and 165 pounds, respectively. Bentley led the Mountaineers to the 2012 Southern Conference Championship with a 6-0 record. The squad also finished 21st place at the nCAA tournament. Bentley was an assistant coach for two seasons at App State before being named associate head coach in 2008. Before as-cending to the helm of the program, Bentley assisted 2009 title-winner Frank Celorrio and two-time SoCon champion Scott ervin, who graduated as App State’s career leader in wins with 114. Since 2006, two Mountaineers have received the league’s Wrestler of the year honors: ervin in 2008 and Trotman in 2010. Trotman also received Freshman of the year accolades in 2008, and both ervin and Blevins were recognized as the SoCon Tournament Outstanding Wrestler during Bentley’s coaching tenure. Coach Bentley has seen the Black and Gold capture 13 SoCon Wrestler of the Week awards and his wrestlers have captured five spots on all-SoCon teams and another five slots on the all-Freshman honor roll. A graduate of the University of north Carolina, Bentley came to Appalachian with vast experience as a coach and wrestler. At north Carolina, Bentley was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion and was twice named team MvP. He was the 2001 ACC Wrestler of the year and a 2000

University nationals Freestyle All-American. He ranks ninth in UnC single-season win percentage with a mark of .919, when he went 31-2 in 2000-01. He is sixth all-time with an .851 career winning percentage at Carolina and finished with 92 career wins. He was a three-year member of the UnC Student-Athletic Coun-cil and earned a degree in communications in 2001. in 2008 he earned a masters degree in school administration from App State. He began his career as the top assistant at Davidson College in 2002-03. From 2003-2006, he was head coach at Watauga High School in Boone, leading the Pioneers to a third-place finish at the north Carolina State Championships with three individual state titlists in 2006. A three-sport athlete at Avery High School in nearby newland, n.C., Bentley was the second wrestler in north Carolina high school history to win four state champion-ships. He finished his high school career with a perfect 144-0 record, capped by a national Championship in 1997. Bentley’s brother, Matthew, wrestled at Appalachian from 1992-96. He and his wife, Aaron, reside in Seven Devils, n.C. with their daughter, Katie eliza-beth and son, Luke Franklin.

Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, n.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Boone now at-tracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is one of the 17 institutions in the University of north Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 26 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, who are leaders in communities in north Carolina and around the world. Ap-palachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to com-munities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused sustainable technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. news and World Report’s best public universi-ties in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 22 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 19 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recre-ational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in new york City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges.

Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institu-tional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing Appalachian is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its

Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. it is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in national Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” U.S. news and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in north Carolina.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western north Carolina. it became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of north Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the visual Arts. it features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orches-tra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the national Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
