We are all meant to be mothers of God—for God is always needing to be born. What good is it to me if this birth of the divine takes place unceasingly, but does not take place within me? LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF LOVE

Barbara Hoffer: On our journey through Advent we have lit three candles—one for hope, the second for peace, and the third for joy. Today we light the fourth candle—the candle of love.

Kathie Lansing: There is no greater power than love. It is stronger than empires and armies, stronger than grief or despair, stronger even than fear and death.

Claudia Moore: Love is young Mary’s song—hopeful and determined. Love is Joseph’s song— faithful and tender, merciful, protective. Love is God’s song—gentle, strong, full and free, coming among us, holding nothing back. Love is to be our song— welcoming, affirming, full of forgiveness and grace.

Gene Saupp: Love is the song we need today. As the coming of the Christ draws near, we light a candle for love.

WORSHIP ADVENT: THE WAITING OF AN OPEN HEART. Before we can kneel at the manger, there are before us four long weeks of waiting, of hoping, of reminding ourselves “not yet.” Advent calls us to experience what those who lived before the child felt—the longing of a people who felt as if they were abandoned, yet dreaming of and preparing for the day when another comes and all is made right.
