Commentary by Jim Wade– MCL Department of Indiana Commandant 2014-2015

Commandant’s Report on National Convention 2014 Indiana was well represented at National this year. I sat next to PDC Hunsinger and PDC Englert, and HIB Commandant Nasby, Karen Englert and Shockey Commandant Kelly Gilli-han. There were 13 members from HIB 089, 4 members from River Cities 1090, 2 from Shockey

960, 4 from Bray 471, 6 from Tripoli 844, 2 from Southern Indiana Leathernecks 931, 1 from Whitewater Valley 96 and I hope I didn’t miss anyone. The big event was the 75th Anniversary of the Military Order of Devil Dogs and there were many there to be promoted. Some of the high lights were having as our host Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams. Look up his story on line. The convention book dedicated three pages to his story. The opening ceremony was done by PNC Paul Hastings, one of my favorites. The normal introduction of honored guest, presentation of colors, pledge and singing of National Anthem, and prayer. One of the speakers was Mayor of Charleston WV was Marine Danny Jones, who stated that West Virginia is the most patriotic state in the union with one in every 10 citizens is a veteran. When the credentials committee chair read off the delegate votes that final day, it was amazing that the total was 18,912 votes from 43 Departments present and one third of all Detachments were present. Monday I sat through all reports until close, and was at the opening of business on Tuesday, but during the break, I was called to see National Commandant Tuohy who informed me that one of our members had an accident and was at the ER of a Hospital across the street. I spent the remainder of that day with him. Wednesday was a Devil Dog final and 75th M.O.D.D. Supreme Growl Thursday’s agenda was crammed with so many reports that they didn’t get through them all and some were carried over to Friday. The nomination of officers was last thing on Thursday afternoon, John Kovalcik nominated for Commandant, Richard Gore nominated for senior Vice, and two contested offices. Junior Vice Commandant was a surprise when there were four marines nominated for that office. There were two marines nominated for the office of Judge Advocate. There were many good reports, and many donations made to Marines helping Marines-Wounded Warrior program. One very sad note was that PNC Paul Hastings was stepping down as Comptroller for health reasons, after 29 years of service to National. I spoke to him later, and thanked him for his loyal and dedicated service, and told him that I wish him speedy recovery. He is a very serious and dedicated member, but also brought some fun to the meetings. Friday began with a Chapel of Four Chaplains Program, and then the opening for business. Many of the reports left over from Thursday were done Friday, including Commandant’s awards. The elections were done by Delegate vote and Credentials Chair read off the votes per state, and we had to line up ac-cording to states from A to Z which there is no state that starts with Z. Wendell Webb, Division Vice for Midwest won hands down with over 11,000 votes so he is our new National Junior Vice. The election for Judge Advocate was another hands down victory for Dennis Tobin who Won by over 13,000 votes. After all announcements, and the close of business session, Gary Nasby and I left for home. It was an easy drive, just stopped for gas, head call and coffee. He did all the driving, and I did most of the laughing. Too many rude drivers on the road. If you have not been to a National Convention, I would suggest that you plan to go. It is time well spent, and you will learn many good things. Next year, 2015, will be in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort . Reservations cal be made at 1-800-832-2025 and make sure you tell them you are a member of the Marine Corps League. Semper Fi Jim Wade Commandant, Department of Indiana

Life membership dues (Sect. 645-646) structure has changed as of last years 2013 Convention. National By-Laws reprinted 2/2014: Sect. 645 Life Member dues: 0-35 $500 36-50 $400 51-64 $300 65-over $200 These fees are paid directly to National. They keep $50 for administrative fees, and the rest is deposited into the Life Member fund. Starting on the second anniversary of the membership proceeds from this membership are split into 1/3 payments and sent to Detachment, Department, and National. Sect. 646 covers this.

This Month in History

Selected August Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance

1 August 1944: After nine days of fighting in a battle termed "the perfect amphibious operation of World War II," MajGen Harry Schmidt, commander of V Amphibious Corps, declared the island of Tinian secured. The combination of surprise, heavy preas-sault bombardment, and effective logistical support was responsible for Tinian's recapture with a much lower casualty rate (344 killed and 1550 wounded) than had been experienced in previous landings.

3 August 1950: Eight Corsairs of VMF-214, the famed "Black Sheep" squadron of World War II, launched from the USS Sicilyand executed the first Marine aviation mission in the Korean War in a raid against enemy installations near Inchon. After the F4Us de-livered their incendiary bombs and rockets on their targets, the Marines concluded their greeting to the Communist troops with a series of strafing runs.

7 August 1990: President Bush ordered U.S. military aircraft and troops to Saudi Arabia as part of a multinational force to defend that nation against possible Iraqi invasion. One week later the Marine Corps announced the commitment of 45,000 troops to the Persian Gulf area as part of Operation Desert Shield which would become the largest deployment of U.S. forces since the Vi-

9 August 1942: With the Guadalcanal airstrip secure after heavy fighting with the Japanese, the 1st Engineer Battalion com-menced work on the runway using captured equipment. Three days later, on 12 August, the first plane landed on Henderson Field, a Navy PBY which evacuated two wounded Marines. Nearly 3,000 wounded Marines would be evacuated from Henderson Field

17 August 1942: Just prior to dawn, the 2d Marine Raider Battalion under LtCol Evans F. Carlson landed on Makin Island from the submarines Nautilus and Argonaut. The next day the Marines left the island after destroying a seaplane base, two radio sta-tions, a supply warehouse, and killing about 100 Japanese soldiers.

21 August 1968: PFC James Anderson, Jr., was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by Secretary of the Navy, Paul R. Ignatius, for heroism in Vietnam while serving as a rifleman with Company F, 2d Battalion, 3d Marines in February 1967. This was the first Medal of Honor presented to an African-American Marine. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson, Sr., received the award during ceremonies at Marine Barracks, 8th and I.

23 August 1984: The last Marines to serve peace-keeping duty in Lebanon arrived home. The 24th Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU) arrived off the coast of Lebanon on 9 April to relieve Marines of the 22d MAU who were guarding the U.S. Embassy in Bei-rut. The 24th MAU left Beirut on 31 July, marking the last presence of U.S. combat troops in Beirut since Marines entered almost

24 August 1814: Captain Samuel Miller's 100-man detachment from Marine Barracks, Washington, fought in the battle of Bladensburg for the defense of the national capital. After helping to fight back three British charges, Captain Miller was wounded and the enemy began to work around both flanks of the American force. Almost encircled, the force of sailors and Marines was forced to retire to avoid capture. The Marines lost 8 killed and 14 wounded.
