A Service of Holy Communion from The Book of Common Prayer (BCP)

Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4) Sentence: Repent, and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2.38–39 Prayer of Preparation:

Let us pray together: (the congregation kneel or sit) ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Summary of the Commandments: Priest: Our Lord Jesus Christ said: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’ People: Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

Prayer of the Day O God, your Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Acts 2.14a, 36-41 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 36 Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.’ 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ 38 Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’ 40 And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’ 41 So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 116.1-4, 11-18 1 I love the Lord, because he heard my voice:

the voice of my supplication; 2 Because he inclined his ear to me:

in the day that I called to him. 3 The cords of death encompassed me; the snares of the grave took hold on me:

I was in anguish and sorrow. 4 Then I called upon the name of the Lord:

‘O Lord, I beseech you, deliver me!’ 11 How shall I repay the Lord:

for all his benefits to me? 12 I will take up the cup of salvation:

and call upon the name of the Lord. 13 I will pay my vows to the Lord:

in the presence of all his people. 14 Grievous in the sight of the Lord:

is the death of his faithful ones. 15 O Lord, I am your servant, your servant and the child of your handmaid:

you have unloosed my bonds. 16 I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving:

and call upon the name of the Lord. 17 I will pay my vows to the Lord:

in the presence of all his people, 18 In the courts of the house of the Lord:

even in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord. Second Reading: 1 Peter 1.13-25 13 Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. 14 Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. 15 Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16 for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’ 17 If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. 18 You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your

ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. 20 He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. 21 Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. 22 Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. 23 You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord endures for ever.’ That word is the good news that was announced to you. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our

Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 24 beginning at the 13th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them,16 but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ 19 He asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and

crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22 Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23 and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’25 Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. 28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON followed by a short time for reflection

The Nicene Creed I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten son of God, Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By whom all things were made: Who for us men, and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man, And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord and giver of life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the Prophets. And I believe one Catholick and Apostolick Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead, And the life of the world to come. Amen. Then shall the Priest say bible Sentences as he thinketh most convenient in his discretion. LET your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. St. Matth. v. Then shall the Priest return to the Lord's Table, and begin the Offertory, the Alms for the Poor, and other devotions of the people, shall be placed upon the holy Table. And when there is a Communion, the Priest shall then place upon the Table so much Bread and Wine, as he shall think sufficient. After which done, the Priest shall say, Gracious Lord, we pray that you accept these our gifts, and us your people, for your service and to your glory. Amen.

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church militant here in earth. (the congregation kneel or sit).

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: And grant, that all they who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity, and godly love. We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian Kings, Princes, and Governors; and specially thy Servant ELIZABETH our Queen; that under her we may be godly and quietly governed: And grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under her, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and Curates, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. We bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

We pray for all who are working on the building project and for its successful completion; and our Bishops Philip and Barbara.

We pray for those called to find a new Incumbent for this place. Bountiful God, give to this parish a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose, wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

We pray for those in need, and for those who care for them: Margaret L, Gwen B, Billy C, Clarence M, Jeff B, Joy W, Nancy S, Philip H, Babe I, Jean S, Margaret Y, Brenda, Jean I, Beatrice S, Judy S, Miriam A, Mia C, Jan T, Peter Hs and those we remember in our own hearts and prayers.

We pray for the members of Holy Trinity not able to worship with us, Renee A, Wilma M, Margaret D, Hilary, Joyce L, Elisabeth D, and all who care for them.

We remember before God with thanksgiving the lives of Edna Egginton (2008), Jack Lyons (2012) and Frances van Brummelen (2011), as we come to the anniversary of their entry into your nearer presence.

Then shall the Priest say to them that come to receive the Holy Communion,

YE that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God.

Page 11: 2014 05 04 8am bcp

11

Then shall this general Confession be made.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Priest, (or the Bishop, being present) standing up, and turning himself to the people, pronounce this Absolution.

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; Have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Priest say,

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him. Come unto me all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. St. Matth. xi. 28. So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. St. John iii. 16 Hear also what Saint Paul saith. This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Tim. i. 15. Hear also what Saint John saith.

Page 12: 2014 05 04 8am bcp

12

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins. 1 St. John ii. 1. After which the Priest shall proceed, saying, Lift up your hearts. Answer. We lift them up unto the Lord. Priest. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. Answer. It is meet and right so to do. Then shall the Priest say, IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Amen Then all them that shall receive the Communion pray. WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

When the Priest, standing before the Table, hath so ordered the Bread and Wine, that he may with the more readiness and decency break the Bread before the people, and take the Cup into his hands, he shall say the Prayer of Consecration, as followeth.

Page 13: 2014 05 04 8am bcp

13

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again; Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, (a) took Bread; and, when he had given thanks, (b) he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, (c) this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he (d) took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this (e) is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Amen.

Jesus, Lamb of God. Have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins. Have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world. Grant us your peace. Come, let us take this Holy Sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us.

Communion wine may be received: (a) from the common cup by drinking or intinction (b) from an individual glass on request

Or you may choose to receive the wafer only, as Communion in one kind.

Page 14: 2014 05 04 8am bcp

14

Let us pray in the words that our Lord Jesus Christ has taught us: OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. After shall be said by the Priest a prayer of thanksgiving. Then shall be said by all, standing, GLORY be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Then the Priest (or Bishop if he be present) shall let them depart with this Blessing. THE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.

From Fr Graham: Are you as sick and tired of all the pre – budget chatter that goes on in the media? I am constantly disappointed at the shallowness of much of our political debate. As a community we should look to our governments to set policy priorities for health, welfare, education etc and set an appropriate Budget to meet those priorities. That will mean the taxation rates have always to be under review and adjusted to meet the costs of meeting those priorities. We should be challenging the status quo that sees this media driven shallow argument. As Christians we should always be seeking the “Common Good” - of course we will have differences of opinion, but we should not be afraid of rational debate these matters. As we seek to “love our neighbor……” we should always look to the good of all. Reading through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 -7)is a good place to seek the mind of God for these things; Jesus words will challenge us and perhaps even change us. In his weekly letter to the Clergy the Archbishop finished with this important paragraph: “Finally I want to encourage your support of asylum seekers and refugees, those newly arrived into Australia or housed in detention centres here or offshore. In the lead up to Easter all the Archbishops and the Bishop of Tasmania jointly signed a statement expressing our profound disquiet at the policy of keeping asylum seeker children in detention. We said that: “These children are innocent victims of tragic circumstances. …. those who flee from desperate circumstances by boat should not be punished by prolonged detention whether in Australia, Nauru or Manus Island. They are not the people smugglers. They are people made in the image of God, who deserve respect from all Australians, but especially our Government and its agencies. “ This matter has been picked up by several media outlets and will, I pray, continue to be held up to public scrutiny until wisdom and compassion prevail.” Please reflect on this statement and consider your response to this important issue. Easter Blessings Fr Graham Trading Table TODAY. Chorister induction for new choristers: May 24, during the 10am service. Please come and help welcome our most recent choristers.
