March was named for the Roman god of war,
Mars. This was the time of year to resume
military campaigns that had been interrupted by
winter.
March's birthstone, the aquamarine, was thought to cure heart,
liver, and stomach diseasesall one had to do was drink the
water in which the gem had been soaking. Early sailors believed
that aquamarine talismans, etched with the likeness of the sea
god Neptune, protected them against ocean dangers. Aquamarine
is associated with faithfulness, courage and friendship.
March's birth flower is the daffodil, which means
unequaled love; the sun is always shining whenever your
significant other is around. The other March flower is the
jonquil, which signifies desire for affection returned. It
also is used to convey sympathy.
Pisces (February 19th-March 20th) and Aries (March 21st-April 19th) are the astrological
signs for March. Mysterious and alluring individuals, most Pisces are extremely talented,
but even though they are gifted in many ways, they still manage to spend
most of their lives battling "confusing" conditions. Pisces is the sign
symbolized by the image of two fish. Their symbol depicts one fish heading
upward, the other pulling downward. This mirrors how Pisceans are frequently
torn between two pathways in life, or actually do live two very different
existences at the same time.
Aries are fire signs and those born under this element are regarded in
astrology as adventurous, active and outgoing. Aries is a uniquely naive sign.
Although they are independent, outgoing and assertive they are also surprisingly trusting,
often innocently walking into the lion's den at times. No matter what upheaval, challenge
or triumph they confront - an Aries has a wonderful ability to bounce back. Their faith in
life and the future remains untouched by hardship. Their gift is that they are always
children at heart and the world is always a magical place for them.

March Holidays and Observances
March 4th Mardi Gras/Shriove Tuesday is French for "fat Tuesday"--the final feasting before the fasting of
Lent, which begins tomorrow, Ash Wednesday. Fat
Tuesday is also called Shrove Tuesday, a name that comes
from the practice of shriving--purifying oneself through
confession--prior to Lent. Many of the names applied to
this day relate to food and eating. In many Latin
countries, Mardi Gras is the culmination of the carnival
season of revelry and feasting. Among the Pennsylvania
Dutch, this Tuesday is Fastnacht (fast night), and everyone enjoys the traditional fastnachtkuchen, a
rectangular doughnut with a slit in the middle.
March 5th The Christian season of Lent (Ash Wednesday) begins today, 40 days before Easter (not
counting Sundays). Many Christians attend church services
on Ash Wednesday to receive ashes on their foreheads in
the sign of the cross. (Ashes are a symbol of penance in the
Old Testament and in pagan antiquity.) In the Roman
Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting. In the
sixth century, Christians who had committed grave faults
were obliged to do public penance. On Ash Wednesday, they
donned a hair shirt (which they wore for 40 days), and the
local bishop blessed them and sprinkled them with ashes.
Then, while others recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the
penitents were turned out of the holy place. They could not enter the church again until
Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter), when they received absolution.
March 9th Today is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time, time for moving the clocks one hour ahead. The exceptions are Arizona, Hawaii,
Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Credit for Daylight
Saving Time belongs to Benjamin Franklin, who first suggested the idea in
1784. The idea was revived in 1907, when William Willett, an Englishman,
proposed a similar system in the pamphlet, The Waste of Daylight. The Germans were the first to officially adopt the light-extending system in
1915 as a fuel-saving measure during World War I. The British switched
one year later, and the United States followed in 1918, when Congress
-
4
passed the Standard Time Act, which established our time zones. This experiment lasted
only until 1920, when the law was repealed due to opposition from dairy farmers (cows
don't pay attention to clocks). During World War II, Daylight Saving Time was imposed
once again (this time year-round) to save fuel.
March 16th At the time of this spring Moon (Full Worm Moon), the ground begins to soften and earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return
of robins. This is also known as the Sap Moon, as it marks the time when
maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins.
March 17th Saint Patrick's Day is in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland, who brought Christianity to the Emerald
Isles, as Ireland is known. It is truly a day of celebrating
Irish history, ancestry, traditions and customs. Erin Go
Braugh is perhaps the most common Irish term you will hear.
It means "Ireland Forever". Over 34 million Americans are
of Irish descent. That's almost nine times the population of
Ireland!
March 20th Ah, Spring! A time when "a young man's thoughts turn to thoughts of love"...and outdoors and
fishing and gardening and........ And, let's not leave out
the ladies. Spring brings out these thoughts and more,
for both ladies and gentlemen. So, let's go and enjoy
what many believe to be the best season of them all!
The Spring Vernal Equinox brings days and nights in
equal proportions. It is simply the day when there are
exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime.
But, did you know that this is only true on the Equator?
For the rest of us, the timing is a little sooner, or later, depending upon where we live on
the planet.
"Springtime is the land awakening. The March
winds are the morning yawn."

NEIGHBORS, FRIENDS,
COMMUNITY
Bob & Brin McDonald
Thank you all so much for all the
prayers, cards and good thoughts.
You will never know what its meant
to us to have all of you in our life.
The prayers have worked and I
made it through a tuff surgery but
with the help of all of you as my
husband was summoned to his
Dads bedside and again we
received all the prayers and
concern and help from you all. The
power of prayer how great it is.
Its given me and my husband the
strength to go on no matter what
has happened this past month.
Bobs Dad was laid to rest on
February 12, 2014 and with Gods
help we all knew it was hard to say
goodbye but that he is in a much
better place and at peace.
I could never say enough about my
community, a place where you
could just pick up the phone
directory and call and say hi, my
name is Brin McDonald and I am at
137 Silver Crest Drive, could you
help me, and before you know it,
you would have someone at your
door helping you with whatever you
needed. Then there was most of
you stopping by and offering help
and washing my clothes and doing
whatever you could for me all the
time. I am the luckiest person in
the world and I live in the best
community there is. Thank you all
so much!!!!
Now remember, Bob and I are your
neighbors, friends, and part of
your community so please call us if
you ever need help with anything
because just like you were there
for us, we will be there for all of
you.
A special thanks to Betty and
Lloyd Larry, Dave and Mary
Schnopp, Dick and Carol Gould,

Chicken Foot
Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.
Tammy Anthis 353-1959
Chicken foot is a fascinating domino game
which begins in a cross format from the
opening double, so that there are initially
four free ends. Dominoes are played with
touching ends matching in number as
usual. Doubles are played crosswise, and
after a double is played the next three
plays must be next to the double. These
are spread out slightly like the toes of a
chicken's foot, forming three new ends
of the layout. The object as usual is to be
the first to play all your
dominoes.
Mens Poker Mondays & Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.
Scott Cameron (863) 852-3784
This is a fun friendly game of poker.
Bring your nickels, dimes, and quarter and
try your luck. Hope to see you one or
both nights.

Some things to think about!!!!!
If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy
of an atomic bomb.
The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out of the body to squirt blood 30 feet.
A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death.
Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.
The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football
field.
The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)
Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
Butterflies taste with their feet.
The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.

DIARY OF A SNOW SHOVELER in Minnesota!
December 8th - 6:00 PM
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and
sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It
looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9th
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
What a fantastic sight! Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world? Moving here was
the best idea I've ever had! Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and
covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a
perfect life!
December 12th
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment! My neighbor tells me not
to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful!
Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter that I'll never want to see snow
again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14th
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes
everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the
driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and
buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but
I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.
December 15th
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the
wife's car and two extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in
case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16th
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt
like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.
December 17th
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5
hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife &
try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.

God I hate it when she's right. Can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20th
Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night. More
shoveling! Took all day. The damn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to
shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only
hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have
another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will
have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22th
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell
today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all
dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed
and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck
for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think he is
lying.
December 23rd
Only 2 inches of snow today and it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the
front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a
month ago? She says she did, but I think she's lying.
December 24th
6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a
heart attack. If I ever catch the SOB who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through
the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around
the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at 100
miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me
to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for
the damn snowplow.
December 25th
Merry Christmas! 20 more inches of the slop tonight - Snowed in. The idea of shoveling
makes my blood boil. God, I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a
donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude.
I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time,
I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.
December 26th
Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really
getting on my nerves.

December 27th
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting
for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.
December 28th
Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The WIFE is driving me crazy!!!
December 29th
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest
thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30th
Roof caved in. I beat up the snowplow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars,
not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his
ass. The wife went home to her mother. Nine more inches predicted.
December 31st
I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8th
Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the
bed?
