AYE TRIO

Alex Chien, piano Young-Hye Lee, violin Elena Ariza, cello

About the Trio

Violinist, YOUNG-HYE LEE, 15 is a

student of Jenny Rudin and attends Gunn High School in Palo Alto. She joined the El Camino Youth Symphony in 2008, and has won the All-ECYS Concerto Competition five times. She has also participated in Capriccio Chamber Music Summer

Festival.

The AYE Trio began with the acquaintance of cellist Elena and pianist Alex. After reading with Young-Hye there was no doubt they should become a group. Finding a name for the trio turned out to be not as challenging as anticipated, when Alex’s father put the letters of their first names together and found –the AYE!

The Trio will study Beethoven Op. 11, a work sometimes known by its nickname, “Gassenhauer Trio”. The title comes from the third movement theme, a very popular song from a drama giocoso of 1797 by Joseph Weigl.

The Trio will also study the famous “Dumky” Trio by Dvorak this fall. A work of six movements, this piece made the “dumka” style famous for it sudden changes in mood, tempo and character.

The AYE Trio played for renowned pianist, Mack McCray and appeared at SF Music Day in this month. The Trio will appear in master class for pianist Joyce Yang and the Alexander String Quartet at San Francisco State University, Knuth Hall, Friday, November 8, 2013. Free to the public, the concert and class begins at 1:10pm.

Pianist, ALEX CHIEN, 15 is a student of

Kai Chi Zhu and attends Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose. He is the winner of numerous piano prizes among them: the Marilyn Mindell, Zeiter, and the Los Angles International Liszt Competition in 2012. Alex attended the Young Performer’s Program at Music@Menlo in 2012 and 2013.

Young musicians these days are travelers, finding their musical education across the nation and

sometimes across continents. Violinist, Taiga Murooka (15) began his violin studies in Shanghai, China, continued in Japan and ultimately settled here in Saratoga, Ca.; and, Freya

Liu (15) traveled to NYC to take the first prize at the 2009 American Fine Arts Festival at Carnegie Hall. She is a member of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. Both violinists have studied chamber music at the Hotchkiss Chamber Music Summer Portals in

Connecticut, and are students of Wei He. Linus Lu, (16) is a violist and a composer. He attends Saratoga High School and participates in the school orchestra. Linus is a student of Susan Bates at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre College, and a finalist in the 2013 Northern California Viola Society Young Violists Competition, as well as the ASCP Morton

Gould Young Composer Competition. Cellist, James Ahn (15) attends Gunn High School in Palo Alto and studies with Eric Sung at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre College. James has been a winner of the Junior Bach Festival 2009-2011 & 2013. He is also a prizewinner of the CMTANC and MTAC Voce, and the Menuhin Dowling Competitions.

The BOURDELLE String Quartet has selected Haydn Op.74/3 and Mendelssohn Op. 44/2 to begin this season. Weekly coaching with Susan Bates and Eric Gaenslen has begun with a first

performance slated for January 12. The group will also appear in master class in May performing for the Henschel Quartet and attend the Miró and Henschel Quartet performances at Kohl

Mansion.
