A monumental year for the Conservancy

Dear Conservancy Members and Supporters,

I am pleased to present you with the 2013-2014 Annual Report. This report includes the financial statement of the Conservancy for the fiscal year beginning on October 1, 2013 and concluding on September 30, 2014. The financial statement is the reflection of a successful audit for our financials, which were presented at our Annual Meeting on January 20, 2015.

You will also find as a part of this report, “Conservancy Commitments” which lists and recognizes the people, families, volunteers, sponsors, members, and supporters who made our work possible between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014. Last year, we celebrated the culmination of 50 years of existence, a significant milestone for conservation in Southwest Florida. The strength and breadth of the work being done at the Conservancy today is a tremendous legacy to those who first took action to protect the valuable assets of our water, land and wildlife. A current staff of more than 50 full-time employees and 600 volunteers dedicated to education, science, policy, wildlife protection and preservation work tirelessly to make sure that your financial support is used effectively and efficiently.

Dear Conservancy of Southwest Florida Family,

In December of 2014, the President of the Conservancy and I sent you a report called “Conservancy Commitments.” This document lists those who supported the Conservancy of Southwest Florida during the 2013-2014 fiscal year. At that time, we communicated to you that you would be receiving an audited annual report reflecting the financial status of the Conservancy.

I am pleased to report that the 2013-2014 financial books have been audited, and, once again, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida has received a clean audit opinion from independent auditors, an evaluation that certifies the credibility of our organization. Receiving a clean audit opinion validates the hard work of our entire team in accomplishing its mission, while being responsible stewards of donor and membership dollars. This is the seventh straight year that the Conservancy’s financial statements have received this level of certification, the highest level possible.

I encourage you to review this report, including the “Conservancy Commitments.” We would not be able to do our work if it were not for all the support of donors listed in this Annual Report.

Peaceful Horse RanchConservancy of Southwest Florida facilitated the Peaceful Horse Ranch – a 4,400 acre property – to be put in permanent conservation by the State of Florida as a new Forestry Reserve. The $12 million transaction helps preserve vital natural habitats and contributes to downstream water quality in the Charlotte Harbor.

Amendment 1Conservancy staff and volunteers led the charge in Southwest Florida to get the historical “Land and Water” amendment on the November ballot. The Conservancy campaigned and educated the community on its importance. The amendment passed with approximately 75% of voter support. Over the next 30 years billions of dollars will go toward protecting Florida’s environmentally sensitive lands and exceptional waters.

Members of the Eagle Society have shown the foresight to make arrangements in their estate plans to support the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and protect our quality of life.

Pelican Protection As a result of the Conservancy’s efforts to prevent injuries to wildlife and to expand public education efforts at the Naples Pier, the City of Naples agreed to fund two additional police patrol officers in the area. In addition, we successfully advocated for a stronger Ordinance that banned treble hooks at the City Pier.

Oil DrillingThe Policy and Advocacy team took on inappropriate oil drilling and succeeded in bringing more meaningful enforcement for unauthorized fracking-like activity undertaken at a well in northeast Collier County. The Conservancy also launched an advocacy campaign for updating Florida’s oil and gas laws, gaining support from state legislators for new comprehensive legislation to be introduced this upcoming state legislative session.


Getting the Water Right The Conservancy served as a member of the Citizens Water Strategy Task Force created by the Bonita Springs City Council. After meeting for almost a year, the Task Force submitted an extensive list of recommendations to the Council that, if implemented, should result in improvements to water quality and reduction of flooding in the southern Imperial River watershed.

BetsyIn an emotional meeting at the Conservancy Nature Center in April 2014 long-time sea turtle advocate and volunteer Betsy Sandstrom met her new namesake, Betsy the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. Sandstrom, who was terminally ill, was surrounded by more than 120 friends and family members in the Dalton Discovery Center as it was announced that BETSY was the winner of the Conservancy’s public contest to name the new ambassador turtle.

Long-time neighbors and conservation advocates Conservancy of Southwest Florida and Naples Zoo are partnering to help advance panther research in Florida. Under a new agreement, Naples Zoo, a non-profit organization and nationally accredited zoo, is committing $150,000 over the next three years to help fund the Conservancy’s collaborative research efforts related to Florida panther conservation and management.
