Winter 2013 Palouse Habitat for Humanity Meet the Berrueta Family! [email protected] palousehabitat.org 208.883.8502 PO Box 3054 Moscow, ID 83843 Palouse Habitat for Humanity is pleased to be building it’s lucky # 13 home with the Berrueta Family: Manuel and Tonya, and their four boys, Jonathan (11), Shawn (5), Manuel (2) and Gabriel (1). Manuel is employed at Les Schwab Tire Center in Pullman and serves as a Marine reservist. Tonya is a hair stylist and a hands-on mother to their four grow- ing boys. They are excited for the opportunity to build a home close to family and friends. The Berruetas enjoy life on the Palouse, including hiking and fishing, and their boys are active in soccer and basketball. For Tonya, who grew up in foster care, having a home for her family has been a dream come true. “I applied for Habitat for Humanity because I wanted for my family what others sometimes take for granted, a place for my boys to grow into strong, mature men, where they could run and play like boys are supposed to, a house they could call home.” The groundbreaking for the Berrueta home took place in August and since then volunteers have been working hard to weatherize the home for winter. Teams have come from WSU Interior Design and Construction Management program, Schweitzer Engineering Labs, Simp- son United Methodist Church, Pullman Rotary Club, UI Center for Volunteerism, and Plateau Archeological Investigations, as well as our regular Codger Crew. The Berruetas have been on the build site almost every Wednesday, and secured donations for the excavation and electrical work, as well as fundraising and building community support. Palouse HFH is on schedule to complete the home build the end of March 2014 so long as fundraising stays on schedule too. Palouse HFH must raise another $35,000 to purchase the materials needed to complete the home, which include insulation, drywall, cabinets, flooring and the heating system. Habitat International does not provide funds for home builds, so Palouse HFH depends on local fundraising and donations of materials and labor to build the Berrueta home. Please help! End of year gifts are wel- come online at www.palousehabitat.org or by mail at PO Box 3054, Moscow, Idaho 83843. Manny, Tonya and the boys

Welcome Bob Behal,Construction Supervisor

In August, Bob Behal (re)joined the Palouse Habitat for Humanity family as our new Construction Supervisor. A for-mer volunteer on homes in Genesee and Moscow, Bob spent recent years serv-ing Habitat affiliates in Texas and Iowa. Palouse HFH was pleased to recruit some-one with his experience and heart for this ministry. Construction Committee Chair Brent Bradberry summed it up: “Bob has a wide range of Habitat experience that has come in handy, saving us time and money. We tolerate his Texas sense of humor be-cause of his other good qualities (tongue in cheek intended.)” As Construction Supervisor, Bob’s re-sponsibilities include scheduling, securing materials, and supervising volunteers.

Palouse Habitat Surplus Sale Update The Palouse Habitat Surplus Sale, our newest fundraising effort, passed its one year anniversary in November. Most new businesses take a year or two to become profitable, but the Surplus Sale reached that point last summer, due in large part to supportive landlords Jim and Dawna Fazio who keep our rent affordable, and the team of volunteers, headed by Surplus Sale Co-ordinator Connie Hall, who’ve dedicated their time and effort to keep the store open two days a week The Surplus Sale is not only generating funds for home building, but it has earned a reputation as a great local option for affordable home improve-ment materials, and is also repurposing tons of material that might otherwise have gone to the landfill. Connie has met her commitment to see us through our first year, and that time is almost up. Palouse HFH is now revewing applica-tions for a part time store manager who will take the Surplus Sale forward. The success of the Surplus Sale is a critical part of our goal to serve more families in need of decent housing on the Palouse. Each Habitat home costs approximately $100,000 to build, and, following Habitat International’s policy, Palouse HFH must raise all of those funds locally. The Palouse Habitat Surplus Sale is open Friday and Saturday, 9:00-4:00 at 304 N. Main Street in Moscow. To donate or volunteer, call 208-882-5246 or email [email protected]. Anyone is welcome to shop and enjoy the bargains the Surplus Sale!
