IEW Coming off their best-ever NCAA Outdoor Championships finishes,

the Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s track & field squads ap-pear as talented as ever heading into a historic 2013 campaign . This year will mark the Seawolves’ inaugural indoor schedule, with three regular-season meets scheduled in Seattle, plus the NCAA Indoor Champion-ships in Birmingham, Ala . Featuring seven outdoor All-Americans (five women, two men), in-cluding reigning men’s 5,000-meter champion Micah Chelimo, UAA should again be among the top 20 squads in NCAA Division II, continu-ing a multi-year streak in the national rankings . Also the 2012 NCAA cross country national champion, Chelimo will spearhead the Seawolf men into their first indoor season before redshirting for the outdoor campaign . The Kapkoi, Kenya, product was the NCAA runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2012 as well, capturing both the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and USTFCCCA (coaches’) West Region Male Track Athlete of the Year awards . The rest of the distance crew is a veteran and ac-complished bunch, including senior Yonatan Yilma, junior Jake Parisien, and sophomores Dylan Anthony and Isaac Kangogo . Freshman Dominik Notz could make a breakthrough, too, after a solid debut in cross country . The other returning All-American on the men’s side is sophomore Cody Parker, who debuted last year with a third-place NCAA finish and GNAC-record javelin toss of 232-5 . The Canadian will be joined by another strong international thrower, German freshman Franz Burghagen, to give the Seawolves perhaps the stron-gest javelin tandem in the nation . In the hurdles, sprints and mid-distances, senior Ethan Hewitt returns with back-to-back All-West Re-gion honors in the 400 meters . The Eagle River (Chu-giak HS) native is the GNAC record-holder in the 400 at 47 .51, and he helped UAA to the conference title in the 4x400 in 2012 . Fellow Alaskans and seniors Austen DeWolf (South Anchorage HS) and A .J . Allen (Fairbanks/Lathrop HS) will team with Hewitt and several strong newcomers to help UAA compete for a league crow in the 4x100 as well . Meanwhile, two of the most accomplished distance runners in UAA history, Ruth Keino and Susan Tanui, will lead a squad that could vie for the first NCAA top-10 team finish for the Seawolf women. Keino, the 2011 Bill MacKay UAA Athlete of the Year, has All-Amer-ica certificates to her credit in both the 5,000 meters (2012) and 10,000 meters (2011), in addition to GNAC titles in both races during her career . Fellow Kenyan Tanui burst onto the scene last year as the GNAC’s top newcomer and Female Track Athlete of the Year, winning both the 5K and steeplechase at the league meet . The GNAC steeple record-holder also became the first Seawolf woman to earn two All-America finishes in the same meet . The middle distances also feature a pair of All-Americans as former Alaska prep standouts Ivy O’Guinn (Soldotna/Skyview HS) and Susan Bick (Anchorage/Bartlett HS) return for their junior campaigns . O’Guinn posted a school-record 4:25 .19 time in the 1500 meters and went on to

finish seventh at 2012 NCAAs, while Bick looks to return to her freshman form of 2011 when she placed eighth in the 800 at Nationals .

UAA also features one of the top hurdlers in Div . II as GNAC record-holder Haleigh Lloyd hits the track for her junior sea-son. Last year the Canadian finished seventh at NCAAs in the 400-meter hurdles, and set the GNAC record in 59 .62 at the Azusa Pacific Invitational. A youthful sprint corps will be led by yet another Canadi-an, sophomore Grace Morgan – who broke UAA’s 100-me-ter (11 .91) and 200-meter (24 .61) records as a rookie – and local freshman Rosie Smith (Bartlett HS) . The Seawolves could also get a boost in the multi-events as freshman Karolin Anders comes to UAA from Germany with great potential .

One of the nation’s most respected track & field mentors, Michael Friess is in his

23rd season as head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2012-13 . In eight seasons of full institutional spon-

sorship, the Seawolf track & field teams have quickly left their mark on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference under Friess, earning two individual NCAA titles and four runner-up finishes, 31 All-America awards, 52 individual conference titles, 88 all-conference honorees, and 13 league records . In less than a decade as a full-fledged program, Friess has piloted the track & field squads to success on a national level, qualifying 56 athletes for NCAAs since 2001 . A program-record 10 Seawolves com-peted at the Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2012 and 2009, and the UAA men have finished in the top 20 for the past five seasons, including their first top-10 showing in 2012. Since joining the GNAC in 2001, UAA’s cross country teams have combined for one NCAA individual title, 20 top-three team finishes at the conference meet, 10 league titles, 20 All-Americans, 69 all-confer-ence certificates and eight individual conference titles. The women’s team is on a streak of four straight titles since 2009, while the men’s team has three straight from 2010-12 . The Seawolves have been no stranger to the NCAA Championships under Friess’ guidance, having qualified a team for the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships 16 times overall, including sending both the men’s and women’s squads in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Friess has earned 14 conference coach-of-the-year accolades in cross country, including three straight women’s coach-of-the-year honors from 2003-05 . In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Friess swept both the men’s and women’s GNAC Coach of the Year honors. In addition to conference honors, Friess earned his first West Region honor in the spring of 2009 for the men’s track & field team, before picking up his first women’s cross country honor in the fall of the same year . Friess went on to sweep the West Region in 2010 and 2011, claiming both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year accolades . Athletes have excelled in the classroom as well under Friess, earning 170 academic all-conference accolades since 1994 and 59 USTFCCCA all-academic honors since 2006 . Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams have combined for 14 U .S . Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team rec-ognitions since 2005, while both track & field teams have made the All-Academic Team each year since 2009. Friess graduated from Linfield (Ore.) College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 1985 and was an NAIA All-American distance runner for the Wildcats . He earned a master’s degree in sport biomechanics from the University of Oregon in 1986 . A graduate of Anchorage’s Dimond High, Friess remains active in the local running community as a competitor, coach and organizer . Some of the events Friess organizes include the Mayor’s Marathon & Half-Marathon and the Crow Pass Crossing . A USA Track & Field Level II coach, Friess is also a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and is certified by ACSM as an exercise test technologist and exercise specialist. He and his wife Stephanie have two children, Meagan – a former Seawolf track & field athlete – and Steven.

DR. STEVE COBB Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic depart-ment, Dr . Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented

heights . Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways .Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memora-ble athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances

for Seawolf basketball teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times) . In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div . II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success . Under Dr . Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus . He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s cur-rent facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010 . In 2005, Dr . Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endow-ment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA . Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008 . Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational volleyball tournaments . The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium . A former football coach, Dr . Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA . In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr . Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball . From 1992-95, Dr . Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach . He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90) .A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr . Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St . Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State . Dr . Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage .

TOM CASEChancellor – University of Alaska Anchorage

Tom Case assumed the chancellorship of the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2011 .

A retired 3-star Air Force Lt . General, Case has spent more than 12 years in Alaska, including two Air Force tours of duty, five years as dean of UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP), and three years as president and chief operating officer of a state-owned, independently operated

Aerospace corporation . The 1969 graduate of the U .S . Air Force Academy began his 33-year military career flying in Vietnam . Later, he served at the Pentagon, was selected as the first Air Force Chief of Staff Chair on the faculty of the National War College, and eventually went on to command two fight-er wings, a numbered air force and Alaskan Command . He also served as deputy commander and chief of staff for the nation’s two largest geographic joint combatant commands . After retiring from the Air Force, Case returned to higher education as dean of CBPP at UAA . During his tenure, CBPP added several new certificate and degree programs, including a graduate certificate in Global Logistics, and played an instrumental role in the formation of CBPP’s Experimental Economics Laboratory .

SEAWOLF ATHLETICSNicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and men’s and women’s cross country.

UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic.

Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 181 Sea-wolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 16 individual national champions since 1991.

In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive performance yet in 2011-12. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition, including top-10 national team finishes by women’s basketball, both men’s and women’s cross country, skiing and men’s track & field.

Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 15 of the last 18 years.

This is UAA!ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 stu-dents through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the Univer sity’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic-tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a mini-mum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.
