What makes a great mountain town? Start by being surrounded

by amazing natural resources such as the dramatic Sierra

Nevada mountains, Donner Lake, Lake Tahoe, Truckee

River, nearby reservoirs, alpine lakes, and streams. Combine that with a

community of adventure-seeking locals that live the lifestyle most can only

dream of, with nature’s playground right out their backyard. Like-minded

individuals that care and are willing to put in the time and effort to make

a difference in their community. Put that on top of a town that is rich in

history, that embraces and retains their western roots and heritage, and

you have the authentic, charming mountain town of Truckee.

Inside these pages you’ll find everything you need to take you out

of your world, and into ours. We invite you to explore and discover the

world of Truckee. From lodging, shopping, dining, golf, ski, family-friendly

activities, weddings, camping, snowboard, skate, spa, and more.

This year, Truckee is celebrating 20 years of incorporation and 150

years since its establishment. What once was a stop for supplies for

early emigrants making their way West, is now a world-class destination.

20 years ago, the community came together to take its fate into its own

hands, to create its own destiny with incorporation. Guiding land use,

ensuring its unique small town community character is retained, the streets

are well maintained, and the abundance of snow is removed. This big step

in Truckee’s history is a large part of why Truckee is as healthy and vibrant

as it is today.

Read the lifestyle profiles within this guide of just a few of our locals

that call Truckee home. Learn why they chose the Truckee area, where

they came from, and what motivates them to get up every day and live the

Truckee lifestyle to the fullest.

Enjoy your time in Truckee creating your own uniquely memorable

adventures.

America’s Best Summer Lake Town

Truckee was named by msnbc.com for being one of America’s Best Summer Towns—“picture-perfect locales offer hikes, water

sports, small-town atmosphere.” Noted for Donner Lake’s warmer temperatures, for being a great basecamp for exploring outdoor

activities such as the growing sport of stand-up paddleboarding, the growing local art scene, great restaurants, and even our own brew pub.

RainBoW BRiDGE A scenic drive on Donner Pass Road (part of the Old Lincoln Highway, now Hwy 40) from Donner Lake up to Donner Pass will take you over the curved Donner Summit Bridge, known as Rainbow Bridge. There are various vista stops and access points to trails, granite cliffs, and petroglyphs along this road. One vista point is just next to the narrow bridge, offering views of Donner Lake and information panels telling the history of California’s Truckee-Donner area.

cottonWooD REStaURant & BaR Take in a spectacular view of historic downtown Truckee from the Cottonwood Restaurant & Bar. In the summertime, take in the crisp mountain air and enjoy the view from the outside deck, snuggled in Mexican blankets. Autumn colors and fall foliage make a gorgeous view from this vantage point. And in the winter, enjoy the snowfall out the panoramic windows in this cozy setting.

There are several restaurants along the shoreline from which to take in the beauty of this magnificent lake. Time permitting, don’t miss the dramatic views of Emerald Bay, one of the “most photographed places on earth.”

GREatESt accoMPLiSHMEnt: A boat with three fishermen got caught in large surf, capsized, tangling them in nets. They were drowning as the boat rolled, pounded in heavy shore break. Two other surfers and I paddled in and untangled them. Wasn’t that hard or dangerous, we saw the sets coming and knew how the boat would roll. We were rock stars after that in the San Blas islands in Panama. Teaching 4th graders snow survival and a couple of searches with the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team comes in a close second.

Donner Summit is one of the most significant and historic mountain passes and transportation routes in the U.S.

DonnER PaSS

• The pass was the last challenge in a 2,000 mile journey for early emigrants heading west seeking a better life (the California Trail).

• It was the most challenging segment in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, trying to blast through the mighty granite of the Sierra Nevada.

• It opened up the Overland Route train line that allowed train travel from California to Chicago.

• It was a key pass along the Lincoln Highway, one of the first transcontinental highways for automobiles across the United States of America. The highway turns 100 years old in 2013.

• It is known as U.S. Route 40, which once traversed the entire United States. It is one of the original 1920’s U.S. Highways and was built on top of several older highways, most notably the Victory Highway, designed as a memorial to World War I veterans.

• Interstate 80, the second-longest interstate highway in the United States, was built in the 1960’s.

• The pass is a prominent feature along the California Zephyr passenger train route.

RoyaL GoRGE The Truckee Donner Land Trust recently acquired 3,000 acres on Donner Summit known as Royal Gorge, and 351 acres in Negro Canyon above Donner Lake. This might be one of the most important conservation victories for the Sierra in a generation. Now, all of Royal Gorge’s remarkable meadows, peaks, natural resources, and the Nordic ski area have been protected forever and will be open to the public for world-class recreation.

PaciFic cRESt tRaiL The Pacific Crest Trail (commonly abbreviated as the PCT) is a long-distance hiking and equestrian trail. It is a 2,663 miles long trail running from Mexico to Canada along the crest of the mountains in California, Oregon, and Washington. You’ll find yourself on sections of the Pacific Crest Trail on many hikes on Donner Summit. One popular local PCT hike is from Donner Summit to Squaw Valley, 6.0 miles one way.

The statue at the entry to the park represents the height of the snow fall during the ill-fated Donner Party winter (1846). 20 MiLE MUSEUM intERPREtiVE SiGnS Donner Summit is grand and unique. You can stand on the site where Native Americans crossed for thousands of years and left evidence in the form of petroglyphs, where the first wagon trains crossed, and the route of the first transcontinental railroad and first transcontinental highway (the Lincoln Highway). The 20 mile museum consists of 29 interpretive signs placed along Old Highway 40 from Eagle Lakes exit (#164 off I-80) to over the Summit below Rainbow Bridge. Each sign highlights history, displays historical photographs and quotes, tells a good story, and lists activities for the location.

TruckeeCALIFORNIA

Bet You Didn’t Know… The name of the town derives from a friendly Paiute Indian guide whom, in 1844, assisted thousands of emigrants migrating west across the Humboldt Sink. The Indian’s name sounded like “Tro-kay” to the white men, who dubbed him “Truckee.” He became a favorite of the white settlers who found him to be honest and helpful. Chief Truckee fought bravely alongside Col. John C. Fremont in the Mexican War and was the father of Chief Winnemucca.

Truckee holds an enduring history reminding us of a young America stretching its physical boundaries. Some journeyed here with silent note; others, with legendary force. But all who passed this way left a mark, forming a definition of our world.
