Through Ewing Kauffman’s example, we see that one individual, with vision and purpose, can change a community...a nation...the world. From his Marion Laboratories and the dozens of entrepreneurial companies it fostered, to the Kansas City Royals he brought to the community, to his enduring gift in the foundation that bears his name, Mr. Kauffman has touched countless lives in countless ways.
His legacy, and that of Muriel and Julia Kauffman’s, inspires us to challenge the status quo, take a risk, persevere, and achieve our big dreams. Bravo to the Kauffmans, and to all those who will follow their example and take the next bold steps.
Here’s to bold steps.

Long absent from the repertoire of Lyric Opera of Kansas City, The Flying Dutchman has not been performed since 1975. The most recent Wagner performance was a production of Siegfried in 1992. Therefore, you can imagine our excitement and joy in bringing you a new The Flying Dutchman. This work is considered by many scholars to be a clear harbinger of Wagner’s eventual universe of music-drama. Most obvious is the central theme of man’s redemption through the love and devotion of the “ideal” woman, a recurring theme in Wagner’s works.
To be honest, the mere mention of Wagner’s name created a great deal of ambivalence for me. Fortunately, I read an interesting article which helped me sort through some conflicting emotions. I would like to tell you about it.
One of the most impressive and knowledgeable people writing about classical music today is Alex Ross. Ross has been contributing to The New Yorker since 1993 and has covered the field from the Metropolitan Opera to the downtown avant-garde. Ross came to The New Yorker from The New York Times. His first book, “The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century,” a cultural history of music since 1900, was published in 2007. It won a National Book Critics Circle award and the Guardian First Book Award. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His second book, “Listen to This,” was published in the fall of 2010. I suggest reading Alex Ross whenever you can.
In his article, which appeared in The New Yorker in September, Alex talks about “The Case for Wagner in Israel.” But he has an even bigger message. He is writing a book called “Wagnerism: Art in the Shadow of Music” and says that he is doing so to “restore complexity to a picture that has become too cartoonishly simple.” I applaud him for the effort and impatiently await a book that is still several years away. He makes the point that it is too easy to say either that Wagner’s music is sublime or that he was Hitler’s inspiration. Divine or Devil? That is not the whole story. Wagner also inspired Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Proust, Joyce, Mann, Cather, Kandinsky, Isadora Duncan and Eisenstein, among hundreds of others. “Yes,” says Ross, “Wagner operated on an epic scale, but he was also a master of interior moments, of the psychology of desire and despair.”
It seems as if Wagner was both larger than life and yet could be very small at the same time. What a paradox. And still, isn’t life filled with paradoxes? I suggest that you enjoy the opera, luxuriate in the music and read more about the composer. A fascinating journey.

Delivering food can take a moment. But, it’s a good moment.
Last year Cross-Lines volunteers delivered nearly 14,000 bags of groceries to hungry Kansas Citians.
And that’s just part of the Cross-Lines reservoir of hope. Hot meals, hot showers, community garden produce, prom dresses, a thrift store, job counseling and utilities assistance are all included … and Cross-Lines volunteers are at the heart of it all.
There are many ways to volunteer. In fact, nearly 75% of our budget comes from voluntary contributions.
Why not join us? Contributing online takes a moment. But, it’s a good moment.

Spring Break and Summer Opera CampSThere are no ghostly tales shared around the campfire, but oh, the stories they will tell after Lyric Opera Camp!
Nine through eighteen-year-olds are invited to attend these fun, music-filled day camps. Daily schedules include singing and movement, dramatizing and listening to music from upcoming main stage operas, and visits from Lyric Opera artistic staff and singers. Lyric Opera Camp inspires young people to appreciate the many facets of opera and to develop as singers while making new and lasting friendships. Download registration forms at kcopera.org.
Opera fOr kidSKids are the stars of the show!
Professionals from the Lyric Opera teach children in elementary grades how to work together to stage a successful production. Singing, acting, and creating costumes and sets are all part of the fun! Participating schools may choose one of two operas: Born To Freedom, a story of young people discovering and paying tribute to the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or Never Lost A Passenger, the story of Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad.

The
A benefit for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City
Wagner’s operas have clearly become one of the four modern day pillars supporting the opera theater roof – the others being Verdi, Puccini and Mozart. The Dutchman’s phantom ship hasn’t appeared as a Lyric Opera offering for many seasons, although our desire to bring it to port again has burned fiercely within us for years. With our new home here at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, with its magnificent physical resources – including a large, modern orchestra pit – we are finally able to present this romantic German opera in its proper setting.
We have strived to develop our new physical production in concert with the traditional romantic nature of the story and Wagner’s musical setting of it. Director Bernard Uzan and set designer R. Keith Brumley have aptly referenced the nineteenth century French engraver and illustrator Paul Gustave Doré as an evocative stylistic source for the look and feel of our Norwegian maritime environment, and costume designer Mary Traylor has captured the color and style of its quaint inhabitants.
What now remains to be retold in Wagner’s glorious musical setting, as it was in young Senta’s day, is the old legend of the mysterious ship, its unfortunate captain, condemned for eternity to wander the seas, unless a woman would prove willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order that he might be granted final repose for his condemned soul. Please join us in welcoming this great opera composer back into the Lyric Opera repertoire after such a long absence.
A RetuRn to WAgneR
WARd Holmquist Artistic Director
28 kcopera.org
The Dutchman emerges like a dream while humanity sleeps. A moment of absence...the sailors are sleeping and the wanderer of the seas appears, imposing his presence on the audience.
His kingdom is in another dimension. As he awaits death, he is a hybrid character between life and death. He remains in his boat, as if it were a coffin. Condemned to roam the seas, he searches for the young girl who can save his soul, like an ogre after his prey. He is inseparable from the universe of the tempest, of primary violence...the tempest of the ocean and the tempest of his soul.
From the beginning of the opera he is ambivalent, owning the eternity of the afterlife, but torn by a purely human suffering.
Senta also becomes part of this legend. She has dreamed of the Dutchman, raised from her childhood to believe in his legend. Her Ballad makes the link between the earth and the ocean, and therefore, she becomes the link between the terrestrial banality and the unknown surrealism of the ocean…Senta brings to life an almost secret myth and under her impulsion, the painting/vision of the Dutchman comes to life like a divinity comes to life because of the cult belief we impart on it.
The question is – is the character who appears to Senta the embodiment of the image in the painting? Nobody in the opera really recognizes the Dutchman as the man in the painting.
Is it only the dream of a neurotic woman? The young girls in Act 2 do not deny the existence of the Dutchman. The sailors in Act 3 are confronted by the ghost chorus of the Dutchman crew. Thus begins the adventure and the audience is brought into the same fascination.
Senta will join the Dutchman and a new mythology will be created.

The Flying DuTchman: The sToryAct I – Sailing through the icy Norwegian seas, Captain Daland’s ship has been driven seven miles off course by a violent storm. The crew seeks shelter in a cove. The crew is surprised when the seas get rough and the sky darkens. A ghostly ship, the Flying Dutchman, suddenly appears and the captain disembarks, lamenting his cruel fate. The Dutchman once vowed to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, even if it took forever. Because of that, he was condemned by the devil to sail the oceans for eternity. He is permitted to leave the ship once every seven years to look for a wife who will vow to be faithful to him even to death. She is his only salvation.
When Captain Daland greets the Dutchman, he learns that the stranger is willing to pay a large sum for a safe harbor in which to anchor for the evening. He tells him the sum in the chest offered is only a small representation of what he has aboard his ship. He also slips in the question of whether or not Daland has a daughter. Upon finding out that he indeed has a daughter, the Dutchman immediately asks for her hand in marriage. He offers Daland all the treasures on his ship for the exchange. Daland agrees and promises his daughter Senta, who will be a faithful wife. The Dutchman then follows Daland to his home port, seemingly, on calmer waters.
Act II – Back in Daland’s house, the women of the town are busy mending nets. The legend of the Flying Dutchman is well known, and Daland’s daughter, Senta, is haunted by the story. A picture of the Dutchman hangs in the house and Senta is seemingly in a trance staring at it. The women tease her for being so preoccupied and urge her to pay more attention to her huntsman suitor, Erik. Staring at the portrait of the Dutchman, Senta sings a ballad explaining the legend. She intensely professes that she wishes to be the one to save him from his fate. This proclamation is heard by her suitor, Erik, and when she reiterates that this is indeed her dream, he leaves in despair. The next moment, Daland arrives with the Dutchman. Senta recognizes him from the portrait and he tells her his tale of woe. She vows to be a faithful wife to him until death. Daland, Senta and the Dutchman rejoice in the hope that true love brings.
Act III – When the sailors return to harbor, the villagers rejoice. They invite the Dutchman’s crew to join in the celebration, but become frightened by the strange chanting taking place onboard. Senta runs to the harbor and is followed in hot pursuit by Erik. He is despondent that she has forsaken him for a stranger. The Dutchman overhears part of their quarrel and believes himself to be betrayed. He orders his ship to set sail immediately and renounces his salvation. Senta begs him to stay. She runs to the Dutchman, and proclaims her undying love.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
March 15-24, 2013
A ballet about the transforming power of love, William Whitener’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is based
on William Shakespeare’s comedy about the romantic misadventures of two mortal couples and the king and

Lang’s stunning pas de deux, Splendid Isolation III. All performed with music from the Kansas City Symphony.

When asked what facts he thinks our audiences would tbe suprised to learn mr. Finnigan said, “i’m a goofy guy...anything for a laugh.” as part of the Company’s 10 Questions series with artists, mr. Finnigan shared all about his early experience with opera and how he believes there is an opera for everyone. read excerpts from his interview below.
What is an average day like for you? Do you have a set routine?casey: aside from my morning coffee, no. i make sure to get to the gym 3-5 times a week, and i practice and work on music daily; but i don’t have a rigid routine.
What was the first opera you watched/experienced?casey: the first opera that i sang in was la bohème as part of the children’s chorus. the first i went and saw was così fan tutte; followed shortly by a fantastic production of Turandot.
