Principal’s report

Courage to Care

Yesterday our Stage 3 students were fortunate to have

the opportunity to travel to Wagga for a special

excursion. The ‘Courage to Care’ travelling exhibition

gave our children an insight into how ordinary people

can do extraordinary things. The exhibition was based

primarily around stories of survivors and their rescuers

during World War II. The primary themes were around

helping others who were suffering discrimination,

bullying, racism and prejudice. These themes are a key

focus of our school anti-bullying programs conducted

every year in every class. I know that all of our students

came away from this excursion with some powerful

messages. I trust they will carry these with them into

the future and reflect on their own interactions with

others.

Robotics

Once again Junee High School as part of our Ngumba-

dal Learning Community, has provided an amazing

opportunity to some of our students. Today I am

escorting 15 of our Stage 3 children to participate in a

day’s workshop on Robotics. Junee High has secured

the expert services of a member of Charles Sturt

University, as well as access to several very expensive

kits. The day will involve our students working in teams

to construct a robot, which must operate under

specified conditions. Lots of construction, problem-

solving, investigating and team-work will be the order

of the day, with the winning team from each school

competing next Tuesday in the inaugural Robotics

Shield. More stories and photos will be included in our

next newsletter. Thank you Junee High!

School App

Over the next few weeks we will be trialling a new

phone app to further improve our communication to

our parents. This app will be available free for both

iphone and android phone users and will enable us to

send SMS messages instantly to families with the app.

This will be extremely beneficial for things such as

excursion arrival times, any emergencies, reminders to

parents. As well, parents will be able to access our

website, permission notes etc via this app. More details

will be sent home shortly once it has been set up.

2014 School Captains

Forms were sent out this week for eligible Year 5

students who would like to nominate as school

Captain/ Vice Captain in 2014. Next Wednesday we will

be holding speeches in the hall at 2:00 pm, followed by

voting by staff and students. Parents of candidates are

most welcome to attend to listen to speeches. We have

very high expectations of our school leaders in their

behaviour, attitude and leadership as they are role

models to the rest of the students at Junee North.

Successful candidates will be announced at our

Presentation evening to be held on Wednesday 11

December, commencing at 7:00 pm at the Junee High

School Multi-Purpose Centre.

Surveys

Thank you to those parents who have returned surveys.

At this stage we have had 24 out of 80 returned. I

encourage any parents who have not yet done so, to

complete their survey (also available on our website).

The feedback you provide is invaluable for future

planning. I will be contacting those parents who

provided their name on the survey for a follow-up

discussion in the next few weeks.

Garage Sale

This Saturday 23 November, Junee North will be

participating in the Monster Garage Sale. We have lots

of old desks, chairs and other items of furniture no

longer needed in classrooms. On Friday afternoon after

school we will be pulling out these items which have

been hidden away for a considerable time under

buildings – any assistance with this would be greatly

appreciated! We would also appreciate any helpers to

assist with the sale on Saturday. If you can help in any

way, please contact me.

Kangaroo March Choir

In 2015 there will be a re-enactment of the Kangaroo

March where a group of men travelled from Wagga via

Junee to Sydney to enlist to fight in WWI. On Saturday

7 December there will be an official launch of the

Kangaroo March at the Wagga Victory Memorial

gardens. We have several of our students who will be

singing as part of a mass choir at this launch. Thank

you to Harrison & Grace Fahy, Kasey Miller, Bryce &

Grace Flagg, Luke Davis, Ellie Crawford, Campbell

McDevitt, Jaylah O’Meley and Bryton Parkhurst who

will be representing Junee North in this choir.

Sports News

Well done Ben!

Recently Year 6 student Ben Turner competed as part

of the Riverina PSSA Boys Cricket team. Here is his

account of how they went!

Day 1: We versed North Sydney. We batted first. I

opened and got 14 but we were all out for 57. They

got the runs 2 wickets down.

Day 2: We versed Sydney South West. They batted first

and got 143. I opened again and got 11. In the end, we

just got over the line in the second last over.

Day 3: We versed South Coast. They batted first and

got 103. I opened again and got 13. After all, we got

the runs in the 31st over. I also got 2 wickets that game.

Day 4: We versed North Coast. They batted first and

got 126. We were 3 wickets for no runs – we were in a

bit of trouble. In the end we fell 20 runs short. I got 1

not out.

Good on you Ben – we are very proud of you!

P&C News

Next meeting

The next P&C meeting will be held next Tuesday 26

November commencing at 6:30 pm in the staffroom.

All welcome!

Notice of AGM

The Annual General Meeting is to be held on Tuesday

10 December, commencing at 6:30 pm. All office

bearer positions will be declared vacant, with past

committee members stepping down. We need parents

to come along and be willing to put up their hands to

step into these roles. Lots of support will be available!

Canteen News

A reminder that our canteen and uniform shop is now

open Mondays and Thursdays. Volunteers are always

welcome! If you can lend a hand, please contact

Jannette on 0438281802.

Cyber Safety Many of our staff have concerns regarding the on-

line activity of our students. In particular Facebook/

Snap/ Instagram and also of growing concern – Xbox

live! This virtual world is ever-changing and it is

difficult to keep up with the many new

communication modes available. We have invited a

Police Liaison officer to speak to our Stage 3 students

next Thursday 28 November at 11:40 am.

Many of our children do not really understand the

implications of what they do on line (and often

parents don’t either!). If any parents would like to

come along to listen in, or ask questions you are

more than welcome. For further information a terrific

site is Cyber Smart.

Stage 2 Science Enrichment

Once again this term, we have had the opportunity of

having Dr Matthew Collins visit and work with some of

our students to share his knowledge and passion of all

things scientific. We are extremely grateful of Dr Collins

in giving up his time to provide these wonderful

experiences. Over the past few weeks some Stage 2

children experimented with magnetism and electricity.

All eyes on Dr Collins as he provides a demonstration of

generating electricity

Jake, Brandon, Tahlia and Megha creating their circuits

Lachlan is a picture of concentration as he experiments

with adding more batteries to his circuit

I wonder what will happen if I put my finger in here?

Tom just had to test it out!

Ouch!! That’s what happens!!
