Swimming Carnival

This was once again a sensational day of fun, competition and participation. Congratulations to all children who entered races. The ability to swim is massively important and I was impressed with the talents of many of our children. Special thanks to the Wauchope Swim Club for catering tasty treats on the barbecue, the Wauchope Pool Staff, the many parent volunteers and the WPS staff for all their efforts. Mrs Darcy for their excellent organisation. Some of the highlights were Mr Baker jumping in fully clothed as he attempted to save a non-swimmer who was already being saved by a pool lifesaver and some magnificent timers who were awarded the top stop watch award on the day for having the exact same time to the hundredth second five times in nine races. Quite unbelievable! Special congratulations to our Swimming Champions for 2013: Junior Boy – Thomas F, Junior Girl – Mackenzie G, 11 Years Boy – Jayden B, 11 Years Girl – Gabbi F, Senior Boy - Sam I and Senior Girl – Taylah D. They will be presented with trophies at the Term 2 Assembly of Excellence. Spectacular diving techniques below.

Good luck to our Swim Team who will compete at the Hastings/Camden Haven carnival on Friday 22 February at Port Macquarie pool. Students should receive their permission note tomorrow. The Lower North Coast carnival will be in Kempsey on Wednesday 27 February and the North Coast carnival will be in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday 6 March.

WPS swim caps are on sale at the canteen for $10.

Book Packs and P&C School Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid for either the book packs or the voluntary contributions so promptly. We really appreciate it. Please ensure payment is made for the book packs at your earliest convenience and I hope you strongly consider paying the voluntary school contributions.

Meet the Teacher Information Nights

I hope as many parents as possible can attend these information evenings. Apart from finding out about routines, procedures, calendar events and class expectations you will get to meet an incredibly important person in your child’s life for

2013, their teacher! During any given year you would be amazed at how many times I’ve seen children try to “Pull the wool over mum or dads eyes”. So come along and get the real story, meet our lovely teachers and find out about what lies ahead for 2013.

Rotary Team and Young Sportsman of the Year

The Wauchope Public School netball team of 2012 was recently announced as the Rotary Junior Team of the Year. Congratulations to the girls and coaches Mrs O’Reilly and Mrs Newell. The team were North Coast Champions and competed in Sydney at the final eight teams in New South Wales. Congratulations also goes to young tennis star Connor M who was named Junior sportsman of the year.

Ian Lillico Parent Information session

This very informative and practical information evening will be on Wednesday 27 February commencing at 7pm and concluding at 9pm. Dr Lillico is an expert in his field and has presented to parents all around the world. He will be flying in from Perth to be with us. I have included a brief description of the evening at the end of this newsletter. Please note the session is adults only.

PSSA Sports Coordinator

Throughout the year students who represent our school at PSSA trials and the various carnivals have to get WPS staff signatures and pay a levy, usually $3. This year Mrs O’Reilly is our PSSA sports coordinator and she will sign all notes and collect all levies. If your child does need to return a note and the levy please send in an labelled envelope to Mrs O’Reilly. She has an office in the Student Services building.

LABEL EVERTHING PLEASE

Dear Parents. Please clearly label everything your child brings to school. This includes items such as HATS, bags, lunch boxes, drink bottles, JUMPERS. EVERYTHING! No, don’t do it later. Do it now before you continue reading.

Ian Lillico - Supporting our Kids

This seminar covers boys (as well as girls) and their schooling. Ian gives parents strategies to help kids in their growth into adults and compares the needs of childhood and adolescence. The role of the teacher, nature and other factors impacting on children’s success are explained. A highlight of the evening is a strategy to get boys to talk about their feelings - Ian will explore ways that parents can keep communication channels open with their kids. He will cover the rites of passage, bullying (cyber and off-line) and relationships. Ian will outline the changes in society over the last few decades and the impact this has had on our boys in particular – he will discuss cyber-safety and social networking and give parents strategies to help them deal with the digital kids of today. Gender is a continuum and what works best for boys should work for girls. This seminar is all about good parenting at a time when there are so many distracters for family life. It is funny, engaging and delivers a host of practical suggestions. Dr Ian Lillico (father of three sons) is the former Principal of City Beach High School in WA (now retired) and international consultant in gender, boys’ education and middle schooling. He has done action research in gender throughout Australia and New Zealand from 1992 and in the Northern Hemisphere during his Churchill Fellowship in 2000. He has been with the Education Department of WA for 31 years and has held the positions of Teacher, Head of Department, Deputy Principal and Principal. Ian is the founder and CEO of the Boys Forward Institute. He has a PhD (Education), is a National Fellow of The Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) and was the ACEL 2006 National Travelling Scholar. He now provides professional development for teachers, parents, students and a host of other organizations throughout Australia and internationally. His website is www.boysforward.com
