WelCome letterOn behalf of the students, the faculty and staff, and the entire School community, I welcome you to the 66th Annual St. Anselm’s Basketball Tournament, a tournament with a long and distinguished history. Having begun (1948) only two years after the start of the National Basketball Association, this tournament is the oldest continuous high school invitational basketball tournament in the known universe.*
Initiated by Fr. Hugh Monmonier, O.S.B., Headmaster of the school (formerly known as “Priory”), and Coach Bob Dwyer, first and legendary basketball coach, the St. Anselm’s tournament, while ever-evolving, has remained true to its original purpose—that of providing a top-drawer competition for smaller schools blessed with strong basketball programs. Teams at our tournament meet in an atmosphere of friendly and spirited competition, and always with an eye toward excellent sportsmanship. St. Anselm’s concluding (and free-of-charge) Sunday night baked ziti dinner reflects well the ethos of hospitality for which the tournament, the School, and the Benedictine Order is known, so if you are able, please join us for a delicious and filling meal sprinkled with lots of warmth and fellowship.
Marked year in and year out by talented, scrappy, and well-coached teams, this tournament-comprised of evenly balanced teams where pretty much anyone can win (over the years, 24 different schools have hoisted the championship trophy)—has been a beacon for all that is good about high school sports. And if quality competition is what you seek, look no further, as three (if not more) men with NBA pedigrees—Fred Hetzel, John Thompson, and our very own Steve Castellan—have been participants in this tournament, and where respected and experienced coaches--including St. Anselm’s own Bob Dwyer, Mark Dean, Brian Murphy, and Paul Grenaldo—pace the court’s sideline.
A special thanks to the St. Anselm’s Parents Association (PA), under the leadership of Carol Ramirez, and to Angie Novak and Elena Papina Miranda—tireless and capable tournament co-chairs—and to Sarah Elder and to the Form II and Form III parents. Thank you as well to our financial underwriters and to the businesses who have advertised in this program. Lastly, a heartfelt “much obliged” to: Jose Padilla, Athletic Director; varsity basketball coach Paul Grenaldo and his excellent coaching staff; Dr. Herb Wood (he of the “known universe”*quote); and the referees and other officials.
Now, let’s jump to our feet in cheering the opening tip, rooting like made for “our” team, and anticipating with delight and imagination all that is possible in the competitive, captivating, and FUN weekend of high school basketball ahead: could anything be better?!
Pax in Sapientia,
Bill CrittenbergerHeadmaster
