FreshoffatriptotheSouthlandConferenceVolleyballTournament,atalentedrecruitingclassaddsdepthtoalargelyinexperienced

SoutheasternLouisianasquad. Southeasternreturnsfourseniorsandonejunior,alongwithsixsophomoresthatsawconsiderable playing time in their first season, from a team that qualified for the conference tournament after a two-year hiatus. Of the five newcomersjoiningtheteamforthe2013season,allarefrontrow-typeplayers. “Wedon’thavealotofexperiencecomingbackthisyear,soit’sveryimportantwegetthenewgirlscomfortable,”assistantcoachPriscillaMorgansaid.“Ifwecangetthemcomfortablewiththelineups,school,thecoachandputinsomehardwork,thenIseeustryingtoclimboutofthemiddleofthepack.” SeniorMeganMcMillin,anhonorablemen-tionfortheAll-SouthlandConferenceteamin2012, returns as the favorite to once again fill the liberorolefortheLadyLions.Lastseason,McMil-lin finished fifth in the Southland with an average of4.10digsperset. “Wehavealotofplayerscomingbackthatsawkeytimeforuslastseasonalongthebackrow,”Morgansaid.“Ourbackrowisthefounda-tionandtheirexperienceallowsustogetintosomemoreadvancedefensivesystems.” BattlingforplayingtimealongthebackrowwillbereturnersBrookeBalser,KatieGarrity,CherishKrohnandMorganTodd.Todd(2.02d/s),Krohn (1.88 d/s) and Garrity (1.73 d/s) finished fourththroughsixthontheteamindigslastseason,respectively. SeniorLindseyYoung,whosawtimeasan

outsidehitteranddefensivespecialistin2012,returnsastheleadingsetterfortheLadyLions.Currentlyseventhontheschool’sall-timeassistslist,YoungwillpassformerteammateArianneCruckshank into fifth-place on the list with her 119thassistoftheseason. “Lindseyisgoingtobeakeyplayerasshemovesbackintothesettingrole,”Morgansaid.“Hercommandofthecourtwillbekeytohowsuccessfulwearethisseason.” Youngwillbeworkingwithalargelyinex-periencedoffensivefrontasSoutheasternwillhavetoreplacetwoofitstopthreehittersfromaseasonagoandwillbewithoutVeronicaTurk(2.71killsperset),theLadyLionsleadingof-fensive returner, for at least the first month of the seasonassherecoversfromapre-campinjury.GoneareCourtneyDonald(3.64k/s),oneofthetopplayersinschoolhistoryaswellasthe2012LouisianaVolleyballPlayeroftheYear,andTamraGrayson(1.84k/s). LouisianaTech-transferTiffanyThomasjoinsfellowsophomoresShelbyDevlin(1.46k/s,0.93blocksperset)andMikaylaShippy(0.54b/s),aswellasjuniorElizabethRamee(1.86k/sin2011)andseniorJessicaRauch(1.50k/s)asthemostexperiencedoffensive-mindedplayers. SoutheasternLouisianaUniversityAthleticscompetesattheDivisionIlevelasamemberoftheNCAAandtheSouthlandConference(SLC)andsponsors15varsityteams-eightwomen’sandsevenmen’s.Forwomen,Southeasternsponsorssoccer,volleyball,crosscountry,indoorandoutdoortrackandfield,basketball,softballandtennis.Men’sathleticssponsoredarefootball,basketball,baseball,golf,crosscountryandindoorandoutdoortrackandfield. SincejoiningtheSouthlandConferenceinthe1997-98year,Southeasternhaswon23conferencechampionships,includingfiveregular-seasoncrownsinwomen’ssoccer,fourregular-seasontitlesinwomen’stennisandfourmen’sgolfchampionships. Southeastern’sathletichistoryhasmanynotablechaptersincludingwinningnationalchampionshipsinmen’soutdoortrackin1975andwomen’sbasket-ballin1976-77. Southeastern’s1954undefeatedfootballteamiswellrememberedasoneofthefinestintheschool’sgridironannals,andmanyformerfootballplayershavegoneontodistinguishedcareersintheNFL. The1975baseballteamhadagloriousyearwhentheyadvancedtotheDivisionIICollegeWorldSeries,finishingthirdinthenation. Today,SoutheasternstrivestobethebestamongitspeersintheSLCandsisterinstitutionsintheproudstateofLouisiana.Itclaimedthe

SouthlandConferenceMen’sAllSportstrophyin2008-09andhasledallLouisianainstitutionsintheCommissioners’Cupstandingsinthreeofthepastfiveyears. SouthlandConferencechampionshipsofferSoutheasternautomaticbidstoNCAApost-seasonplayinmen’sandwomen’sbasketball,baseball,vol-leyball,softball,women’ssoccerandmen’sgolf. Southeasternalsomadeitsmarkinpost-seasonNCAAChampionshipcompetition,withthegolfteamplacing23rdinthenationinthe1998cham-pionshiptournament,alongwithqualifyingsevengolfersfortheNCAAchampionshiptournamentandadvancingtosixNCAAregionals(2000,2007,2010,2011,2012and2013).TheLionsbaseballteamplayedintwoNCAAchampionshipregionalsinthe1990sandcamewithinagameofreturn-ingtothepostseasoninboth2012and2013.Thewomen’ssoccerteamadvancedtotheNCAAChampionshipsin2009;whilethetrackandfieldteamhasqualifiednumerousindividualsfortheNCAAChampionshipindoorandoutdoortrackmeetsandadvancingstudent-athletesincrosscoun-try. ofAthleticsonJune6,2013. Namedoneoftherisingheadcoachesinthecollegegamepriortothe2013season,Artiguescompileda276-188won-lossrecordinhiseightyearsinchargeoftheSoutheasternbaseballprogram. UnderArtiguestheLionsestablishedthemselvesasagrowingforceintheregionhavingpostedmarqueevictoriesoverLSU,Tulane,SouthAlabamaandSouthernMississippi.In2010,theLionspostedathree-gamesweepatMississippiStateandin2012addedatwo-gamesweepoftheBulldogs,compilingafive-gamewinstreakagainsttheSECpower. BeginninghiseighthyearatSoutheasternisAndrewBechac. In his current role, Bechaccoordinatesalleventoperationsand game management alongwith coordinating all facility

rentals, retail operations and handling the fifth-yearaidprogram. BeforecomingtoSoutheasternin2005,Bechacspent one year at the Sun Belt Conference as aChampionshipsAssistant.WhilewiththeSBC,Bechaccoordinated the NCAA Yes Clinics, updated theChampionshipmanuals,assistedwithNCAAandtheconferencecomplianceandmediarelationsactivitiesfortheNewOrleansBowl. Bechac, a 1990 graduate in history at LoyolaUniversity, worked for 13 years at the high schoollevelbeginningasanassistantcoachatSt.Paul’sHighSchoolinCovington.HespentoneyearatTeurlingsCatholicHighSchoolbeforeacceptingthepositionasAssistantAthleticDirectorandHeadFootballCoachatGanusHighSchool. Entering his sixth year atSoutheasternastheNCAAFac-ultyRepresentative is JosephL.Morris,Ph.D. Inhiscurrentrole,Dr.Mor-risisinvolvedintheassuranceof

theacademicintegrityoftheathleticsprogramandinthemaintenanceofthewelfareofthestudentathlete.Heistheuniversity’srepresentativeofthepresidentandfacultyonissuesregardingathletics. Dr.MorrisisanAssociateProfessorofAccount-ing and Coordinator of the Accounting InternshipProgram at Southeastern Louisiana University. Heholds B.S. and M.B.A. degrees fromArkansas StateUniversity(1973and1974),andholdsaPhDdegreefromtheUniversityofMississippi(1986).Dr.MorrisisalicensedCPAinArkansas(inactivestatus). He has been employed by Southeastern since1984, and has served in various capacities includingDepartment Head ofAccounting for 11 years. Dr.MorrisservesontheSouthlandConferenceAdvisoryCouncilaswellastheconference’sComplianceCom-mitteeandAwardsCommittee. Dr. Morris is a member of theAmericanAc-counting Association, Association of GovernmentAccountants,andtheAmericanInstituteofCertifiedPublicAccountants.

Leslie WelshDirectorofTicketOperations

BeginningherninthyearatSoutheastern as the Directorof Ticket Operations is LeslieWelsh. Inhercurrentrole,Rollingis responsible for all aspectsof

Southeastern’s ticketing program including seasonpasses,individualgamesalesandgrouppackages. BeforecomingtoSoutheasternin2005,RollingspentfouryearsasasalesassociatewithRed,Whiteand Brew. She gained extensive experience withpoint-of-saletransactionsystemsincludingtheareasof inventorymanagement aswell aspurchasing andreceiving. Rolling, a 2000 graduate in SportManagementatSoutheastern,earnedherMaster’sdegreeinBusi-nessAdministration at the University ofTennesseeatChattanoogain2003.WhileatUTC,shemanagedRiversideBeverageCompany. The Hammond native played one year of col-legiatevolleyballatLouisianaTechbeforetransferringtoSoutheastern. WelshandherhusbandMauricereside inLor-anger.

Long, a2006graduate inPoliticalCommunica-tion at the University ofTexas, was the MarketingCoordinatorforMajorLeagueSoccer’sHoustonDy-namoduringthe2006season.HehandledallaspectsoftheDynamo’sadvertisingandpromotions includ-ingnegotiatingadvertisingcontracts,managingfinan-cialrecordsandcoordinatinggamedaypromotionalevents. AnativeofHouston,Texas,LongearnedtheNa-tionalSportsLawInstitute’sCertificateofSportsLawand his Juris Doctorate from Marquette UniversityLawSchool in2009.Hepassed theTexas StateBarlaterthatsameyear.

Mary Kathryn BorlandAssistantADforAcademicServices/SeniorWomanAdministrator

Mary Kathryn Borland be-gins her second year at South-easternafterspendingtheprevi-ousfiveyearsatUAB. Borland is instrumental inassisting Southeastern student-

athletes thrive academically. She also serves as theliaisontotheStudentAthleteAdvisoryCommittee. BeforeherarrivalinHammond,Borlandservedas an academic advisor in the Don M. and MarshaHoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center. Hermaindutiesincludeoverseeingtheacademicprogressfor the Blazers’ football and women’s tennis teams.ShealsoassistswiththeLifeSkillsprogram.ShewasappointedastheBookCoordinatorin2010. A2004graduateofWesleyanCollegeinMacon,Ga.,Borlandobtainedherbachelor’s degree inMu-sicwithaconcentrationinvocalperformancebeforemovingtoTroyUniversity,wheresheearnedherMas-ter’sofScienceinSportsandFitnessManagementinMay2006. In 2004, Borland served as a student assistanttotheinterimathleticsdirectoratWesleyanCollege.ShefollowedthatbyholdingastaffassistantpositioninTroy’sstudent-athletesupportservicesdepartmentfrom2004-06. AnativeofDothan,Ala.,Borlandisalsoinvolvedinvariousorganizations,includingtheNationalAsso-ciationofAcademicAdvisorsforAthletics(N4A),theNationalAcademicAdvisingAssociation(NACADA),and she is the former athletics representative onUAB’sCampusAcademicAdvisoryCommittee.
