Getting Here:Arriving in Sitka can be as majestic as exploring the city. Nestled between snow-capped mountains, a shimmering, island- lled bay and lush green forests that climb the rugged shores, is Sitka, Alaska.
Getting here is easy on Alaska Airlines, and the view from the sky is amazing. Multiple daily ights provide a variety of options, and it’s just a short plane ride from
Anchorage or Seattle.
For a more scenic trip, hop aboard the Alaska Marine Highway a ferry system that treks up the beautiful northern Paci c Coast. Vehicles can
be transported on board and private cabins are available. The more adventurous and budget-minded can choose to sleep in the viewing
areas or on deck under the solarium.
Sitka’s picturesque, mountain-lined shores are part of Alaska’s Inside Passage and a popular stop for both independent
boaters and cruise ships. Cruisers seeking a personal, small ship experience will nd it on Alaskan Dream Cruises,
Fantasy Cruises, InnerSea Discoveries, Parker Guide Service or The Boat Company. Visitors who
prefer a more traditional large ship experience can book through Holland America.
Once in Sitka, getting around is simple. The downtown area is very walkable and the
city prides itself on being bicycle friendly. To explore the road system outside
of downtown, visitors can choose from car or bicycle rentals, taxi
cabs, or the RIDE public bus system.

Waking Up In SITKA, ALASKA
Aerial view of Sitka - William Greer
It’s early morning and the sea is silent. Rolling fog wraps itself
around the distant white-tipped volcanic peak. Bald eagles swoop upon early-rising anglers in search of the rst salmon catch. Church bells chime from the onion domes of the Russian Orthodox Church; songbirds croon; shutters lift: the city slowly stirs from its slumber to greet another idyllic day. There’s nothing like waking up in Sitka.
This charming island community located on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, boasts a rare blend of fascinating history, vibrant cultural highlights and boundless natural beauty. It is home to a stunning diversity of wildlife – with brown bears, bald eagles and humpback whales in close proximity – and has some of the nest shing anywhere in the world.
Baranof Island had been settled by Tlingit people for many millennia when the Russians arrived in search of sea otter pelts for the lucrative European fur trade in 1799. After erce battles with the natives, the Russians eventually established a colony in 1804 – the capital of Russian America – and over the last 200+ years Sitka has evolved into a vibrant, multi-faceted community.
Although the Russians departed in 1867, several remaining landmarks serve as a reminder of Sitka’s colonial days. Today, you’ll nd a magni cent Orthodox cathedral, Russian Bishops House, and traditional Russian folk dances alongside time-honored Tlingit totems, regalia and
arts: from expert wood carving to intricate basket weaving; knitting and embroidery to silver jewelry making.
Home to 8,500 people, Sitka has some of the most interesting shopping options in Alaska: the tender tinkle of the bell as you enter a quaint mom-and-pop store provides the soundtrack to any stay in Sitka. The city is also blessed with a wealth of dining options, many of which serve locally-caught wild seafood. Choose from the honest, home-cooked fare of longstanding local eateries to the high-end international cuisine of newer restaurants; enjoy co ee in one of Sitka’s signature cafés, or kick up your heels in a local bar with late-night music. The locals also pride themselves on the thriving arts scene, with regular live performances and festivals making for truly cultural weekends.
Sitka’s charms extend far beyond humanity’s footprint. Alaska’s fourth-most-populous city is also renowned for the scale and beauty of its countless natural features, including thick green forests, clear mountain lakes, dramatic ice elds and craggy cli -side caves. Rubbing shoulders with the Paci c Ocean on one side and a looming mountain vista on the other, the city is in the perfect spot for a variety of open-air activities: from shing, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding to hiking, cycling and ATV riding. There is nothing quite like sitting in a raft by the rocky coast and watching the sun set over Mount Edgecumbe volcano.
Then there’s the ora and fauna. Baranof Island is blessed with an incredible variety of wildlife, roaming the land, swimming the oceans and piloting the skies. Permanent city residents include king shers, deer, bears and eagles, while seasonal visitors comprise otters, whales, sea lions and pu¡ ns – and all can be enjoyed at refreshingly close quarters, often when you least expect them! You can also enjoy dedicated wildlife sanctuaries, including the Alaska Raptor Center and the Fortress of the Bear, as well as the particular plant life of the city and its island, such as skunk cabbage, Alaskan blueberry and western hemlock.
Whether you come for the cultural history, the amazing wildlife or the world-class shing, as you watch the sun set over the high peaks, the fog disperse over the shining ocean and the sherman return to the spruce-lined shore, you can retire to bed sure that tomorrow will be just as idyllic as today.

I t’s a rainforest trail leading past a series of century-old totem poles, through towering evergreens swaying in the
breeze. The cool air electri ed by songs of wild birds, the rushing waters of Indian River, and the knowledge that one of Alaska’s most epic battles took place more than 200 years ago on this very soil in the Sitka National Historical Park.
Sitka is a place where stories of the past come to life, and history is tucked into every corner.
The Tlingit settled in the area thousands of years ago, living o of the land and the sea. They established and named the town Sheet’ka, which was later Anglicized to Sitka.
Russians rst arrived in 1799 in search of sea otter pelts for the lucrative fur trade. After several erce, back-and-forth battles with the Tlingit, the Russians nally established a colony in 1804. This forti ed settlement was named “New Archangel” and served as the capital of Russian America and the center of their worldwide fur trade. New Archangel became the most populated city on the West Coast, and was nicknamed the ‘Paris of the Paci c’ due to its culture of high society.
Castle Hill was the site of the ceremonial transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States on October 18th 1867, and it still shows the remnants of Russian rule. Sitka commemorates the transfer each year with a week-long Alaska Day Festival that culminates on October 18th with a parade and reenactment ceremony. Besides being the birthplace of the Alaskan Territory, Sitka also served as its capital for nearly 40 years.
Those who desire to immerse themselves in both famous and lesser-known stories of Sitka will be delighted with the Sitka Historical Museum, where the Tlingit, Russian, and American eras spring to
life through a variety of exhibits and artifacts.
With such a diverse history, it’s no wonder that this small, picturesque city has 22 sites on the National Register of Historic Places.

A s the aroma of a cedar re wafts through the air, native dancers leap and twirl on stage to a pulsing drum beat,
their red robes and beaded vests uttering as they perform a traditional Tlingit dance. In Sitka, some traditions have existed for thousands of years.
Distinct in uences of Sitka’s indigenous people, Russian colonists, and Finnish settlers create a unique local character. Within just a half-mile walk you’ll nd a Tlingit community house, rare Russian architecture, and a Lutheran church founded in 1840 by Finnish immigrants which was the rst Protestant church on the Paci c coast.
Massive totemic panels stand watch outside the Sheet’ka Kwaán Naa Kahídi, a theater built in the style of a community clan house. Inside, the stage backdrop is fashioned from giant cedar panels that have been adorned with hand-carved totemic designs and painted in traditional colors. A central re pit and tiered seating creates an unforgettable setting for the Naa Kahídi Dancers, who o er stirring performances of ancient songs and dances of the Tlingit people.
Explore the state’s largest collection of Alaska Native artifacts at the Sheldon Jackson Museum where native artisans demonstrate age-old crafts while visitors gaze upon more than 5,000 pieces contained in the collection.
Step back in time with a visit to the Russian Bishop’s House, one of the only remaining examples of Russian log architecture in the Western Hemisphere. Located in central downtown, the building was completed in 1842 and served as the seat of the Russian Orthodox Diocese which spanned from California to Siberian Kamchatka. Today, the historic site looks much like it did at its commencement and is adorned with period furniture and ornate iconography.
Nearby, the prominent onion-shaped domes of St. Michael’s Cathedral mark the Sitka skyline as they have for nearly two centuries. Those who venture inside the active Russian Orthodox church will discover a remarkable collection of religious art, with pieces believed to date back to the 17th century.
Energetic new life is breathed into Sitka’s Russian history by the New Archangel Dancers. This all-female troupe provides remarkable entertainment through a variety of dance renditions that represent the cultures of Russia and surrounding areas.

Catch of the Day - Don Larson

It is a sensation like no other. The tip of your shing rod springs to life and bends furiously
toward the water. On the other end of the line: a notorious ghter, the King salmon. The colossal sh dodges and dives, testing the reel’s drag and your upper body strength.
For the avid angler looking for a great sh story, Sitka is a dream come true. The surrounding waters have the highest saltwater catch rate for King Salmon in the state of Alaska, not to mention world-class halibut shing.
Catch that mountable Chinook and trophy halibut with one of Sitka’s many shing guide services or combine convenience with the shing trip of a lifetime by booking a multi-day package that includes lodging, daily shing trips, in-town transportation and food.
For shermen who prefer the nesse and control of the y, inland rivers are ripe with di erent species of salmon and trout, depending on the season. Join a guide company that specializes in freshwater shing, and travel by plane and boat to freshwater sites around Sitka. The secluded, untapped streams make for high quality angling trips.
Put your angling skills to the ultimate test at the annual Sitka Salmon Derby. Local and visiting shermen spend the two weekends around Memorial Day competing for tens of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. Although each salmon holds the promise of a possible prize, the real hope is to land the biggest salmon of the derby and walk away with the prestigious title and all the awards that go with it.

C risp, early morning air lls your lungs as the sun glistens tranquilly across
the surrounding ocean. Without warning, the surface of the water nearby breaks open to reveal the smooth, glossy back of a humpback whale. The massive creature emerges with majestic grandeur, rolling the length of its body above the surface and raising its white-patched tail in nal salute before disappearing into the deep.
The water and land surrounding Sitka are well known for abundant and diverse wildlife.
Whether you dream of having an experience with one of the largest mammals on earth or watching loveable sea otters oating with their babies, a wildlife boat tour will bring your dreams within easy reach. Each excursion promises a unique showing of wild neighbors. For whale watching at its peak, come to Sitka in November for Sitka WhaleFest, when our surrounding waters are teeming with whales prior to their winter migration. Besides whales and sea otters, expect to see seals, sea lions and a variety of sea birds, such as pu¡ ns, rhinoceros auklets, murres and black oystercatchers.
On the shore, plentiful bald eagles hunt from tall pines, brown bears grab salmon from freshwater streams and the aptly named Sitka black-tailed deer forage for food. Join a guided sightseeing tour to seek inland animals, view marine life from the shores, and visit some of our wildlife centers.
The Sitka Sound Science Center brings sea life to you. See a rearticulated killer whale that washed up on a nearby shore, and get a tactile experience with one of many touch tanks that encourages hands-on interaction with star sh, anemones, abalone and barnacles. The facility also breeds four di erent types of salmon, serves as a hatchery, and releases smolts into Sitka Sound each May.
A memorable experience with coastal brown bears awaits you at the Fortress of the Bear, a refuge for orphaned brown bears cubs who would otherwise be euthanized. The sanctuary allows visitors to see bears at play in a naturalized environment.
Have a close-encounter with majestic bald eagles at the Alaska Raptor Center, a sanctuary that helps to rehabilitate injured raptors and release them back into the wild. Many other birds of prey from around the state can be viewed on site, including great-horned owls, golden eagles and red-tailed hawks.

G liding gently through the calm waters of the sound, you breathe deeply to allow the heady mix of salt
water and evergreen trees to ll your senses. It’s hard to believe that just a short while ago you were in the middle of downtown, and now the only audible sounds are those of nature, punctuated by the gentle whoosh of your paddle as it propels your kayak through the cool water. Navigating between forested islands and through narrow channels, a deep sense of reverence and wonderment grows within you as you begin to realize the size, scope, and beauty of the wilderness that you have become enveloped in.
Beyond the city of Sitka’s tiny footprint sits thousands of square miles of unadulterated, purely wild, untouched country that includes northern rainforests, freshwater rivers, inland bays, snowcapped mountains and a dormant volcano. For those that seek boundless adventure in the great-out-of-doors, Sitka delivers beyond your wildest dreams.
Motor over the backcountry on a four-wheeler with an ATV tour, explore volcanic caves at the base of Mt. Edgecumbe on an ocean raft adventure, head to the skies to get an aerial view of Alaskan wilderness on a ightseeing excursion, or paddle through the harbor and surrounding islands with a kayak tour or rental, a personalized way to observe sea life. Those who prefer to spend their outdoor time on a golf course will enjoy the amazing views from the Sea Mountain Golf Course while testing their shot strategy with challenging elevation changes and tight fairways
Active adventurers can lace up and tackle the island’s many hiking trails, or rent a bicycle at the local bike shop and check out dozens of routes around Sitka and Baranof Island – from smooth and easy rides to rugged terrain with steep climbs and descents. Outdoor equipment and y shing rentals are available for those who want to spend time in the wilderness on their own terms.

A s the bow dances back and forth across the strings, the 300-year-old cello responds to the masterful ministrations of the artist. The hollow body reverberates with Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme,
the tones escalating and intensifying. While the air around you resonates with unbelievably rich symphonic notes, your eyes feast on the backdrop: forested islands sprinkled across a glistening ocean and mountains rising dramatically from the sea.
Sitka’s inspirational setting and eclectic atmosphere attract celebrated artists from around the world.
There’s a bustling arts scene throughout the summer with Sitka Fest! This arts extravaganza combines the Sitka Summer Music Festival, Sitka Fine Arts Camp, science and humanities symposiums, art shares, and culinary parties.
It is di¡ cult to imagine a more beautiful site for the Sitka Summer Music Festival, which attracts world-renown chamber musicians. The stage at the Harrigan Centennial Hall is backed by oor-to-ceiling windows, which provide stunning views of Sitka Sound throughout the performances.
Promising young artists come from throughout Alaska and the United States for the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, recognized as an outstanding arts program by the White House and the National Endowment for the Arts. Nightly art shares allow locals and visitors to see the variety and caliber of talent embodied in the faculty and students.
HomeSkillet Fest brings in bands from around the nation to play everything from hip-hop to folk to blues. The weekend festival is put on by a local music label, also called HomeSkillet.
The Monthly Grind is a popular variety show that opens its doors to local performers during the fall, winter, and spring months. Variety is the key word, and each show features a unique set of acts. Tickets are cheap, and those who bring a homemade dessert get their admission refunded at the door.
In January and early February, the Sitka Jazz Festival brings in jazz musicians from around the world to teach and perform. Clinics in jazz history, theory and improvisation helps musicians re ne their craft, while concerts from local and international artists provide evening entertainment.
Each spring, The Greater Sitka Arts Council hosts ArtiGras: a music and arts festival on the edge of the great Alaskan frontier. The arts celebration features performances and concerts from visiting and local musicians, a wearable arts show, presentations and classes, and gallery walks.
