PIVOT TABLES: ADVANCED TECHNIQUES ANDANALYSISAlex Pashaian
Galata Chemicals, Southbury, CT
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2014
Pivot TablesPivot tables are a valuable tool offered by Microsoft Excel. Manyorganizations use “pivots” as a tool to communicate, but offer littletraining around the tool itself. The lack of training can make recip-ients feel overwhelmed. Pivots are not complicated, and, aftersome detailed explanation of its construction, can become quitesimple. If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide, you can un-derstand anything a pivot has to offer. This presentation will focuson advanced techniques and analysis.
BIO: Alex PashaianAlex is the Global Finance/IT Director at Galata Chemicals, a multi-national chemical manufacturing company, with headquarters inSouthbury, CT. Alex is responsible for all Financial Planning andAnalysis, Business Intelligence, and Information Technology forGalata. After divesting from Chemtura Corporation, Alex success-fully integrated all corporate and local financial analysis from SAPinto Microsoft Excel. As a group of advanced users of Pivot Tables, there is very little functionality behind this powerful tool that some-one at Galata hasn’t come across. Alex will bring Galata’s experi-ence and expertise to SPE, and work from the ground up on thispowerful tool.
If you have any questions before or after the presentation, you cancontact Alex at [email protected].

VOLUME 52 NUMBER 5 FEBRUARY 20142
President’s Message
Our Students, the Future of the SPE
One of the questions we continuallyask ourselves is, how can we helpour student chapters, memberswho not only represent the future ofour industry, but the Society aswell? Yes, we can serve as mentorsand help the chapters financially.
And while this is a good start, the question remains, can we do more? What other opportunities can weprovide them with? What can we do to help differ-entiate them from other college graduates? After all, they all have high grade point averages (???) andare doing independent research. But so too doeseveryone else.
We have posed this very question to our RutgersChapter. Besides an employment offer, or perhapssome sort of paid internship, they are asking for jobshadowing opportunities. A job shadow is simplywhat the title implies, that is the person shadows orobserves you for a period of time. It is actually amandatory requirement in Pennsylvania for highschool graduation, and I’ve hosted several studentsover the years. For the high school students it is aprogram to help the students decide whether or nottheir chosen major was actually something theycould see themselves doing, at least in the first partof their career.
For our student chapter members there are furtheropportunities. During your college life you learn thetools and skills required for employment, but you donot necessarily learn the practical skills required forsuccess on the job. A good job shadow can startteaching students the how and why of employment, and who knows, could be a differentiator during theinterview process.
In this issue you will see a request for job shadowopportunities. If you or someone on your staff hasthe willingness, and the time, please contactMichelle Frondelli, who will put you in contact with astudent. It is a rather simple activity, but one thatmay someday make a difference in a youngstudent’s life, impacting not only the future of ourindustry, but the SPE as well.
Mark Lavach
