Ken Stonecipher - Announcer
In the world of rodeo, Ken Stonecipher has just about done it all.
Contestant. He’s competed in calf rop-ing, and still competes as a team roper, as you can tell by his shortened right thumb.
Committeeman. For the last 14 years, he’s been one of the key fixtures on the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo committee, serving as its chairman for six years, including 2002, when it was honored as the PRCA’s Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year.
Announcer. He calls the action, us-ing his detailed knowledge of the sport along with a tireless work ethic and a quick wit to get the best information pos-sible to the viewing public. The truth is,
Ken Stonecipher is a cowboy, and he’s proud of the legacy he carries. He’s also an entertainer, whether it’s serving as the lead singer and guitarist for the Wooden Nickel Band, pulling off one-liners with a group of friends or keeping a rodeo crowd enthralled with his fabulous take on the sport.
“My job is to inform and entertain,” Ken remarked, “Fans want to know what they’re watching in the arena, and they want to have a good time doing it. That’s where I come in.”
Stonecipher got his start in the an-nouncer’s stand in 2000, when Coach Craig Latham asked him to announce the Doc Gardner Memorial Rodeo, the annual OPSU College Rodeo that takes place in Guymon. Since then, the word has gotten out.
Events from around the region and around the country have called on Stone-cipher to put his entertaining ways on display, and he now works about 18 events every year.
“I love announcing rodeos.” Ken said, “I love the history of the sport, the people that are involved in it, and the towns that I get to visit and folks I get to meet. It’s a privilege to be able to do what I do.”
Rodeo is not only competition — it’s great family entertainment. And when it comes to entertaining, Ken Stonecipher’s the real deal.

Lanny WilsonMusic Director & Sound TechnicianLanny Wilson was born in Gruver,
Texas, and grew up in a musical family. His father played fiddle for several lo-cal bands, and all three of his brothers played fiddle, guitar or both. Lanny start-ed his musical career in the high school band in Gruver, and later played in the proverbial “five-piece garage band” in high school. His college expenses were offset by playing drums for local coun-try bands in night spots all over the High Plains.
Lanny had to move music to the back burner when he started a welding compa-ny that just celebrated its 40th year of op-eration. Hard work and long hours in the early years have provided opportunities for him to return to his first love, music.
Acting as music director and sound technician for rodeos has been a great way for Lanny to branch out and com-bine his love for music and rodeo into one package.
He provides music and sound for ro-deos and events all over the region, in-cluding PBR and PRCA events, TCRA and KPRA rodeos including their finals,
ranch rodeos and college and high school events.
Wilson has a unique talent for match-ing the music to the action, and interject-ing just the right sound clip to highlight whatever is happening in the arena. His efforts provide the soundtrack for the ro-deo experience and make the show that much more enjoyable.

In 1945, some enterprising Pampa businessmen met at the Court House Cafe for coffee and came up with the idea of providing the public with some kind of entertainment in which cowboys and cowgirls could show off their talents.
The Top O’ Texas Rodeo has been held annually ever since except when a tornado hit the area, destroying part of the stands on the east side and then no performance was held when an outbreak of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis quarantined the Panhandle livestock.
Many famous personalities have helped give the Top O’ Texas Rodeo the name is has today. Famous Hollywood cow-boy Monte Hale, Smiley Burnett, the Light Crust Dough Boys, Tex Ritter, Judy Lynn, Molly Bee, Reba McEntire, Christian singer Susie Luchsinger, Red Steagall, Vern Gosdin, Cooder Graw, Ty Murray, Tuff Hedeman, Larry Mahan, the Pikes Peak Rangeretetes, and the Santa Rosa Palomino Riding Club are just a few of the performers who have entertained rode fans over the years.
The Kid Pony Show started the same year as the rodeo. It continues today to give the younger cowboys and cowgirls a chance to develop their rodeo skills.
In 2008, the Top O’ Texas Rodeo was named the TCRA’s “Best New Rodeo.” The Top O’ Texas Rodeo Association Board of Directors was honored as “Committee of the Year” in 2008 and again in 2009.
“Highest Paying TCRA Rodeo” and “TCRA Cowboys Choice Rodeo Of the Year” honors were bestowed on the Association in 2010.
Many great cowboys and cowgirls of area, national and inter-national fame have performed in the Top O’ Texas arena since that day in 1945 when those businessmen met over a cup of coffee at the old Court house Cafe on Kingsmill Street.
Happy Trails!

Top O’ Texas Rodeo Queen Contest back this yearBy Lindsey Tomaschik
Although over the course of its exis-tence the pageant has missed a few years, the Miss Rodeo Top O’ Texas Rodeo Queen Contest makes its return in this year’s rodeo festivities in August.
The winner of the pageant is based on horsemanship and public speaking, and she serves as a Goodwill Ambassador of Rodeo.
Competitors in the contest now range from ages 14-19, and entries come from all over the top of Texas. Past winners have come from as far as Roanoke.
In order to be considered, contestants must attend all three performances of the Top O’ Texas Rodeo and the rodeo pa-rade.
“As a Rodeo Queen you educate people about the sport of rodeo and our Western heritage which we hold dear to our hearts. We traveled all over the state of Texas representing Pampa and our Rodeo As-sociation,” said Mandy Poole, two-time Top O’ Texas Rodeo Queen. “I competed in Rodeo Queen Pageants from the age of 14 until 22 and held over 14 titles all over the state of Texas. Pampa’s Rodeo Queen Pageant always held a special place in my heart because it was the beginning and the end of my Rodeo Queen career.
“I wanted to hang my hat where it all began, so when the opportunity arose to compete as Miss Rodeo Top O’ Texas
2006 I was grateful to sign up as a con-testant. Then it became history in the making as the first queen to hold the Teen Title and Queen Titles twice.”
Poole is still an avid contestant at nu-merous rodeos, barrel races and sortings.
“I thank the good Lord everyday that I participate in the western lifestyle that I enjoy and hold dear to my heart,” she said. “I have been very blessed to have the horses I currently compete on and the ones I have coming along to start their rodeo careers. Rodeo is not just a hobby, it is a lifestyle with which I have been
blessed.”Past winner Brandy Kemph-Adamson
said the biggest responsibility was pro-moting the City of Pampa and its annual rodeo throughout the year. Kemph-Ad-amson was able to make 77 appearances across the Texas Panhandle the year she held the title.
First place winner in the contest is awarded a $500 scholarship and second place receives $250 to put toward their college education. “The scholarship mon-ey was put toward my tuition at Amarillo College, where I was attending classes
at the time. I think it’s very important to recognize the impact scholarships have on students, especially female students. We’re at a point in our country where more women graduate college than men so having equal access to scholarships is essential,” Kemph-Adamson said.
Kemph-Adamson now lives in the Dal-las area and can no longer be as active in the rodeo scene, but she said as she got older she realized that for her, the relax-ing nature of an evening horseback ride is far superior to anything the arena can offer.

White Deer Land Museum to open special rodeo exhibitBy courTney oxLey
June 20, 1945 was a red-letter day for the Top O’ Texas Rodeo, Horse Show and Fair Associa-tion. Back then, rodeo clubs and riding clubs were becoming more and more popular among the smaller towns and everyone would join up and ride through parades and other events in the area.
The charter for Pampa’s club was signed by 13 very enterpris-ing men including, Wade Thom-asson, Crawford Atkinson, Irvin Cole, E.J. Hanna, F.E. Imel, Rex Barrett, John Hayes, Roy Sewell, J.E. Murfee Jr., Orval Christo-pher, John Sims, Arlie Carpen-ter, and E.O. Wedgeworth. These men recognized that the town of Pampa needed a source of enter-tainment, and together they pro-vided what would eventually be the annual Top O’ Texas Rodeo.
This year, the White Deer Land Museum will be hosting a celebration of the Top O’ Texas Rodeo. We look forward to meeting some of the legends of Pampa’s rodeo and we do hope to see you all there. If you have been involved with the Pampa rodeo or professional rodeo we
urge you to come by or contact the museum before the event to fill out a biography.
The White Deer Land Museum will be opening a new special exhibit about the history of the Pampa rodeo and this will be open to the public following the
parade downtown on Aug. 10. Come by and enjoy refreshments and take in the excitement of the Top O’ Texas Rodeo.
Rodeos are a place where lo-cals can show off their talents, youngsters can get their feet wet in the thrilling sport and people
can come from miles and miles to enjoy an amazing perfor-mance. Never has a single event brought together a community like a rodeo, and Pampa is proud to still offer this amazing perfor-mance every year.
In 1962, the rodeo became an
event of the Professional Ro-deo Cowboys Association (now known as the PRCA). Having a pro rodeo brought several fa-mous people to the city of Pampa including Judy Lynn, Molly Bee, McBride and the Ride, Asleep at the Wheel, Miss Rodeo America, Red Stegall and even Binion’s Stagecoach, to name a few.
In 2008, the rodeo took on yet another new look by once again becoming an amateur rodeo after 45 years of being a professional rodeo.
During the weeks before the rodeo the town really comes alive. Local events kick up and everyone gets involved. There are many activities, performanc-es and chances to get out and support your local merchants.
Please visit the White Deer Land Museum on North Cyler Street in downtown Pampa. Reg-ular tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday from 1-4 p.m. If you would like to schedule a special or group tour, please call or email the museum at 806-669-8041 or [email protected].
Courtney Oxley is the director of the White Deer Land Museum.
Rodeo Days Celebration is fun time for a great causeBy John Lee
The Pampa Rodeo Days Cel-ebration will be held on Aug. 10 and is planned to be a fun day to come out and celebrate the Top O’ Texas Rodeo that will be oc-curring that same weekend.
“It is going to be a great day for Pampa and our community,” said Stephanie Nelson, of Open Range Engineering and event co-ordinator for Pampa Rodeo Days Celebration. “Don’t forget to go to the rodeo that night also.”
Started in 2012, Pampa Rodeo Days Celebration, sponsored by Pampa Fuels G2X Energy, occurs in conjunction with the Top O’ Texas Rodeo weekend. Events include a barbecue cook-off, booths where local vendors can display and sell their goods, games, live music and other
events. For 2013, the celebration will
be held at Recreation Park in and around the Clyde Carruth Pavil-ion on Saturday Aug. 10 after the downtown Top O’ Texas Rodeo Parade.
There are no fees for the enter-tainment events, but the barbe-cue plates will be $5 for adults, children 12 and under eat for free. Some of the vendors are Trendy Trailer, Origami Owl, Liana’s Simply Fed and others are in the process of joining the festivities.
There will be a barbecue cook-off, vendor booths, games, live music and bouncers for the chil-dren.
If a barbecue enthusiast is want-ing to show off his or her culi-nary talents, it is $100 to enter the cook-offs. Vendors interested in having a booth can pay a $25 fee. Live music will be provided by local artists Anthony Gonce and Jen Williams. Rodeo Days Celebration is still gathering more artists.
All proceeds from the day ben-efit CASA of the High Plains, a volunteer organization for abused and neglected children. “It is just a fun day to come and hang out in the community,” Nelson said.

Pampa local a member of title-winning equestrian teamBy Lindsey Tomaschik
Meghan Purtle, 2010 Top O’ Texas rodeo queen, has been riding horses since she was six years old.
Her parents brought her to a riding lesson on her birthday that year, and they thought she might just want to be fi nished once she tried it for the fi rst time.
The lesson had the opposite effect on Meghan, and she has been riding horses ever since.
Now, 13 years later, she attends West Texas A&M University and is a member of the equestrian team there.
The WTAMU equestrian team is a western equestrian team that has experienced great success re-cently as they traveled to Penn-sylvania for nationals and won the competition.
At nationals there were 16 classes as well as individual competitions.
There are six riders in every division of the Intercollegiate
Horse Show Association. This year, 19 teams competed
at nationals. Teams are judged on reigning and horsemanship and the competition is a stage for the highest level of collegate riders.
The team was ecstatic to have their hard work pay off and bring the 2013 AQHA Trophy High Point Western Team Champion-ship back to Canyon.
The win was the Lady Buffs’ second title, and this win came 10 years after the fi rst.

Pickup truck race makes returnAn old favorite is returning to
the 67th annual Top O’ Texas Ro-deo.
Spectators will be entertained while enjoying free barbecue (ticket holders only) on Thursday, Aug. 8 by the RAM Pickup Race.
This pickup race has provided many chills, spills and laughs over the years.
Each team will consist of two members — one cowboy or cow-girl and one “city slicker.”
The race begins with team members exiting a RAM pickup,
unloading a trailered horse and saddling it. Each team member must ride the horse down the are-na and around a barrel. The horse is then unsaddled and loaded back into the trailer.
Time will stop when both team members have returned to the pickup and closed both doors. Teams will be competing for cus-tom-made belt buckles.
Entries are now open and are limited to the fi rst 9 teams. For more information, contact the ro-deo offi ce at 806-669-0434.
