You can practice dental assisting without getting your license. Why

should you get your license?

• You WILL get paid significantly more. An unlicensed Dental Assistant will start at $12 an hour. A licensed Dental Assistant will make approximately $20 an hour.

• This is WHY you are here. The SOLE purpose of you being here, at Bryman College Dental Assisting, is to meet the requirements to get your RDA license.

• You will be able to do MORE procedures with a license. Your license will enable you to meet the requirements to take specialized classes that will allow you to do more things.

• For example, after you get your license you will be given the option to take a class on ultrasonic scaling and sealant placement.

• Does anyone know what a sealant is?

• A sealant is a covering that we place over teeth, especially molars, to prevent decay. You can think of it as a tent that you put over a tooth to protect it.

• A RDA that can place a sealant is very valuable to a dentist!!

• Make sure you are ON TRACK

• 1) For you to take the exam, we at Bryman College will need to certify that you will complete the program within 30 days of the exam.

• 2) ALL OF YOUR EXTERNSHIP HOURS have to be done 30 days before the exam. No exceptions!

• 1) Go to the DBC website and read about the exam. The Dental Board Of California administers the exam and grants you your license when you pass.

• 2) Go to the DBC website, find a date, and PLAN FOR IT!

• The dates listed on the website are for the practical exam. When you apply for the exam they will give you a phone number to call to schedule your computerized exam. The practical and written exam will be taken at different times.

• EXAMPLE -

• If you look at the website, you will see that the next “possible” exam is offered Nov. 2 & 3 UC in San Francisco. The deadline to apply for this exam in Aug. 3- Sept. 3 2013.

• To apply for this exam, we would have to certify that you will graduate within 30 days of November.

• Start getting your documents together, RIGHT NOW.

• 1) Go to the DBC website or call 916-263-2300 to request an application. Start looking over the application.

• When you send in the application, they will send back to you an acceptance letter and an 800 number to call to schedule your written computerized examination.

• 2) Set aside $80.00 for the application fee. There is no federal or state assistance for this fee.

• **Set aside extra money for equipment rental. Prices will vary by location. Equipment rental location options are listed on the DBC website.

• 3) Make sure you have a copy of your radiation certificate and your ORIGINAL yellow coronal polishing card.

• Although you do not need these to take to the examination, you will need these to get your license. This is VERY important!

• 4) To get your license, you will need fingerprinting clearances from both the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Identification.

• If you are having any legal problems that will effect this process, TAKE CARE OF IT ASAP.

• So, What exactly will be on the exam?

• We will go over it briefly today. As we go through the course, I will teach you how to study and how to take the exam. I will also implement questions from the board exam into the lecture as examples.

• There will be two sections on the exam, a practical and a written section.

• The practical section will consist of two parts

• 1) fabrication of a temporary crown

• 2) placement of a temporary restoration

• 1) You will bring a typodont (rented) to the exam with you. The typodont must have ALL new teeth.

• 2) Once you are at the exam, DBC will give you a tooth to replace that they expect you to make a temporary crown on.

• 3) You will have 1 1/2 hrs. to do this.• 4) Take the impression BEFORE the examination! DBC will not provide water for you during the examination.

• Placement of a temporary restoration details..

• The placement of a temporary restoration follows similar protocols to the fabrication of a temporary crown.

• Once you arrive at the examination with your typodont, DBC will give you the actual tooth for you to work on.
