2020 Program Information *STUDENT SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED 1ST GRADE Kauai Academy of Creative Arts

The Kaua`i Academy of Creative Arts Summer Program is held on the Island School campus in Puhi. Our 2020 Summer Program dates are from June 15th- July 10th with a culminating OPEN HOUSE to be held on Friday evening July 10th, featuring performances by the performing arts students, and a visual art exhibit in the classrooms. For full day students, a thirty minute lunch break begins daily at 12pm. Children should bring a nutritious lunch. Lunch is not provided. The Academy Snack Shop is open daily during recess and lunch with nutritious snacks/juice/bottled water.

MORNING CLASSES: Monday through Friday 8:00am to 12:00pm TUITION: $395

Morning Class Schedule: Open enrollment to students ages 6 and up.Students will choose three classes from the AM Schedule, plus 1 alternative classes

AFTERNOON CLASSES: Monday through Friday 12:30pm to 4:30pm TUITION: $395

Afternoon Class Schedule: Open enrollment to students ages 6 and up.Students will choose three classes from the PM Schedule, plus two alternative classes.

FULL DAY ENROLLMENT DISCOUNT: SAVE $190! TUITION FOR FULL DAY CLASSES: $600

Enrollment is on a first received, first enrolled basis! Unless you are applying for financial assistance, PAYMENT IN FULL is required with your application to guarantee your child’s space in any class.

Refunds: Tuition will be refunded (less a $30 processing fee) if the Academy is notified before June 9 th. Refunds will not be given after this date. The Academy reserves the right to dismiss your child for disciplinary reasons; in that event, no refund will be given.

Carpooling: The Academy is happy to assist parents in coordinating carpools. If you are interested in carpooling with others in your area who also would like to carpool, please check “yes” on the enrollment form and call 808-635-8661 or email [email protected] after June 9th for a carpool list.

Supplies: Most class supplies are provided by the Academy and are covered in the cost of tuition unless specified on the enrollment form. However, class instructors may request that students wearspecial clothing or bring additional materials from home. These may include recycled materials, dance attire, art supplies or household items.

Confirmation: Please select classes carefully!Schedule changes will not be made once classes begin. Confirmation and Disciplinary Policy,Release of All Claims, Medical Treatment Authorization, and Photo/Video release forms and a supply list will be sent once your registration and tuition payment has been processed.Please read carefully and complete all forms and return them no later than June 10th

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE!

To apply for financial assistance, please complete the Registration Form, mail form with 50% of the tuition and your 2018 Federal Tax Return. All documents must be received by May 22nd. You will be notified of your award by June 9th. If you do not qualify, the remaining balance is due by June 15th. Students with an outstanding balance will not be allowed to begin classes.

Morning Classes, June 5 - July 10, 2020, Monday - Friday, 8am - 12pm Taiko Drumming with Haley Yama-Gokan: This class is an introduction to traditional Janpanese and

Okinawan drumming songs, movements and notation. Drumming will create an excellent body-cardiovascular-brain workout for young students and is a great way for students to incorporate movement to create exhilarating sounds. Haley has been a student and understudy to Aki Conquest and currently teaches taiko drumming to students throughout the year. Haley loves to work with children and is excited to be a part of the 2019 Kauai Academy of Creative Arts summer program.

Expression Art with Kara Swink

EXPRESS YOURSELF Abstract Exploration with Kara Swink Class takes place in the morning Create collage and poetry in this summer’s abstract explora on class. Every week, students will learn about a modern ar st and i ncorporate new technique. Students will construct a unique book from found images and words within magazines. Students will express through spoken word alongside their artwork, if they choose. Addi onal exercises

Create college and poetry in this abstract expression class. Each week students will learn about a modern artists and incorporate new techniques. Students will construct a unique book from images and words found within magazines. Students are asked to bring 10 magazines from home

Drawing from Australia with Derek Glaskin: Who’d like to learn how to draw like an Australian? Learn how to draw. :      There is three great rules to drawing: Line, Form, & Texture. Come along; I will show you how easy and fun it is!

Two teachers, Three Artistic Mediums: 1. Colleen Ogino—Print and Mosaics A former middle school art teachers returns after many years. Week one of class us PRINT with colorful paints reflecting the style of Eric Carle. The second week students will create a ceramic tile with bits and pieces for a one of a kind college. 2. Amy Barr -- Drawing and Painting Returning from Virginia Amy Barr brings Art Adventures to Kauai, combining art techniques, creativity, and imagination. Students will create paintings that will dazzle you! Using high quality supplies, students will learn to sketch and paint an animal of their choice, a landscape and more. Amy teaches how to draw using pastels, water colors and charcoal.

Drawing from with Derek Glaskin: You’ve heard the phrase drawing from nature?   Learn how to make pictures from scrap papers. When there is no pens, markers or pencils, there is always scrap paper.  Learn the cool art of colorful collage.

Hip-Hop Dance with Jennifer Bell-Grey:

Jennifer Bell-Grey is the Co-director of Kauai Dance Center in Nawiliwili and started teaching at the Kauai Academy of Creative arts in 1999. She has over 20 years teaching experience in ballet, hip hop, lyrical, Spanish dance and received a degree in teaching from the Royal Ballet School in London, England. Jennifer professionally choreographs for film & tv and dancers can be seen on the Mokan & Nokan Show on OV16.

Creative art with Kara Swink: Students will learn and reflect on environmental needs of our island and world. Students will create original slogans and original art to convey their ideas about environmental concerns. Please bring local newspapers and magazines for the class to use.

Driftwood with Misu Sumida: Driftwood and other recycled materials, student will make Ho’o pono pono sticks and mobiles from driftwood.

Students will also creative pictures utilizing a scratch art technique.
