WRITTEN BY JADE BREMNER

From fire ceremonies to pomegranate throwing, weddings across the globe are

filled with interesting customs and rituals. Emirates Bride looks at how four very

different religions tie the knot…

WEDDINGS

WEDDING Muslim

CEREMONYThe ceremony itself is called a nikah and

takes place in a house rather than a religious

establishment. It includes readings from the

Qur’an and the exchanging of vows. During

the event, it’s not necessary for the bride to

be present; she’s often in a separate room

where she gives consent in front of two or

more witnesses. Meanwhile, the groom gives

his consent in front of a crowd.

Muslim weddings are hugely dependent

on cultural traditions, but staple customs

include a walimah (large feast), where

the husband and wife publicly celebrate

following the consummation of their

marriage. In the UAE, it is common for the

celebration to take place in a hotel. “We had

our wedding celebration at the Hyatt,” reveals

Emirati Mohsin Alrazi, 47, who married his

wife Khulood, 37, a decade ago, in Dubai.

GIFTSIslamic weddings in the UAE are opulent,

yet private affairs. That said, guest lists often

reach up to 1,000 people, meaning there are

plenty of presents. “In terms of gifts, it’s all

about the bride,” Mohsin explains, “Khulood

was showered with gold.”

FOODIn the UAE, wedding catering depends

mainly on what the hotel can offer; then the

families choose what they deem suitable for

the occasion. If it’s a Pakistani wedding, the

food will be rich and heavy. In a Gujarati

Muslim wedding khitchra, a meat and barley

broth, will be served. In many cases the man

and woman stay separate for all of the dining

events, however, some modern marriages

combine the party.

TRADITIONIt’s customary for the groom to pay for the

wedding; in the UAE this could include

kitting out the bride in designer outfits,

or arranging expensive light shows at the

post-wedding celebrations. During the week

before the wedding, both families often get

together and sing, play music and dance in

the bride and groom’s honour. In a Gujarati

wedding, a Mehndi will take place during the

week before the nikah or even just the night

before, here women will decorate the bride-

to-be in henna.

DRESS CODEIn India, bright-red wedding dresses are

popular among Muslim brides, but officially

there is no formal dress code. Islamic

weddings, particularly in the UAE, are often

about keeping up appearances. The bride

will most likely wear expensive jewellery and

use lashings of Arabia kohl (eyeliner), then

show off her outfits at a women’s reception

with her friends and family.

Worldly

CEREMONYThe complex and lengthy ritual, lasting

several hours, usually starts at home where

the bride’s parents will welcome the groom

with a jaimala (garland) and apply a red dot

of kumkum to his forehead – marking the

start of the relationship between the two

families. The bride and groom then exchange

garlands.

“This was the most memorable part of our

ceremony,” says Sharjah resident and Indian

Hindu Karishma Sharma, 30. Karishma

married her husband, Mridul, 31, three years

ago in the UAE: “The part of the ceremony

where we put flower garlands around each

others necks is called varmala and is a symbol

of respect and honour.”

The most significant part of a Hindu

wedding ceremony is the saptapadi – when

the newlyweds take seven steps around a fire

in front of the god of fire, Agni Devta, saying

a prayer at each step. Karishma explains: “The

seven rounds symbolise seven births and

the promises to be a partner offering love,

commitment and protection.”

GIFTSGau Daan is the donation of gifts. It’s

common to offer clothes, ornaments,

household items and cash at a Hindu

wedding. “The most memorable gift at

our wedding was a pair of plane tickets to

Thailand for our honeymoon, from my

best friend,” recalls Karishma. “It was very

generous of her.”

FOODDishes a week ahead of a Hindu wedding are

vegetarian; sometimes the host families will

serve snacks during the long ceremony to

keep the guests’ concentration. After which,

a big feast takes places, where the guests are

allowed to tuck into meat curries. The bride

and groom don’t get a wedding cake; instead

they publically feed each other five bites of

sweet food (typically honey and yogurt).

TRADITIONWedding rings in Hinduism are diamond and

are worn on the second to last finger on the

left hand. “It is believed that the veins of the

finger lead directly to the centre of the heart,”

says Karishma. Instead of throwing rice or

confetti, guests sprinkle flowers during and at

the end of a ceremony.

DRESS CODEA Hindu wedding is bursting with colour.

The bride wears an outfit chosen by her

parents for the first part of the day, then

for the ceremony she may change into

a red, gold and white sari bought by the

groom, which symbolises the shifting in

responsibility from her parents to her

husband. She will also be lavished in gold

jewellery and flowers. Meanwhile, the groom

usually wears white with gold details, a

sarong and a safa (turban) or necklace

called a kantha.

A Hollywood fAbulous smileTREATMENTInvisalign braces and laser whitening RESULTSThere’s nothing that makes a lady look less than love-struck than a reluctance to break into a wide grin (think Victoria Beckham and her notoriously tight-lipped smile). If your teeth are a secret bugbear, then look to sort your smile before you say ‘I do’. This does require rather more time, and potentially pain, than some big-day beauty fixes but those ecstatic grins pasted all over the wedding album will be well worth the effort. Invisalign takes the good and ditches the bad from those train-track braces that haunted our teenage years: read straight teeth without the aesthetic nightmare of metal-mouth. Custom-made transparent

‘gumshield’ retainers are worn on a daily basis to realign teeth. As they are removable, teeth can be cleaned properly and with no metal involved gums and cheeks shouldn’t be irritated. Finish off by ensuring your smile is pearly white. Laser whitening (again ‘no pain, no gain’) in-dentist treatments are much more effective than any at-home options. Rest assured that if you do experience pain while in the dentist’s chair, it should disappear after 24 hours. COSTPrice on applicationRECOVERY TIMEOn average, treatment with Invisalign can take about a year, depending on the individual. Laser whitening is more instant, but if you have a low pain threshold you may wish to spread the treatment over several sessions, allowing a week or two between each. You’ll need

to avoid coloured foods and drinks post-whitening so finish at least a week before the wedding, unless you’re happy eating plain boiled rice washed down with water at the rehearsal dinner… CONTACTwww.nicolasandasp.com

MARICA ATTORRESI AND FEDERICO ORTILEWEDDING DATE: AUGUST 20, 2011

LOCATION: PORTO SAN GIORGIO, ITALY

Marica arrived in the UAE in August 2007 and quickly settled in Dubai after finding a job as a regional marketing manager for Etihad Airways. Federico's company opened a branch in the region so he was transferred by his company from Padua, Italy to Dubai in October 2008.

The couple met on a very special night. On November 7, 2008 Marica's sister and husband (on their way to Australia for their honeymoon) arrived in Dubai and Marica took them to a bar. There she asked two guys seating nearby to take a picture, one of these men was Federico. From that chance encounter the pair ended up becoming friends and started going out all the time and partying together, but never just the two of them.

After being friends for a few months, Federico's birthday came along on January 12. Marica says: "I was already planning a great party for him with our friends, but he asked me out for dinner, just the two of us. I thought it was going to be awkward but we talked all the time and had a great night..."

Following that first date, they officially became a couple. Then in December 2010, during a holiday in the Maldives, Federico went down on one knee, took out an amazing solitaire ring and proposed.

So, excited the couple immeditaley started to plan their wedding, which, due to their hertiage, had to be in Italy.

1What is it: A personal trainer is a qualified

fitness professional who will devise and

monitor a tailor-made fitness programme

and also advise on nutrition and lifestyle.

Dubai-based trainer Jane Head leads brides-

to-be through two sessions per week in a

private gym, using isometric exercises and

machines that focus on toning the upper

body, abdominals, thighs and buttocks.

What’s so good about it: The name says

it all: it’s personal. Whether it’s weight loss

or toning, your trainer will take into account

your fitness goals and develop a programme

that suits your interests, abilities and lifestyle.

Your programme can be continually tweaked

to maximise results. You may even find your

trainer becomes an agony aunt, says Jane.

“At a time that can often be incredibly

stressful for brides-to-be, I take that stress

away from them through working out. They

can see the results very quickly so it reassures

them they’re going to fit into their dress and

it’s one less thing to worry about,” she says.

Cost: Costs vary from trainer to trainer,

but expect to pay between Dhs150-300

per session.

With the perfect dress waiting elegantly and patiently in your wardrobe, time must be turned to its clothes hanger – you. Every bride deserves to

look her best on her wedding day, and these simple pre-wedding workouts will ensure you’re body beautiful

Best for: Brides who want noticeable results

quickly and prefer individual attention.

What is it: Based on 25 years of research,

Concept 1010 uses seven specially-designed

weights machines to strengthen and

condition your body. The resistance of each

machine is altered after every visit,

providing an intense total-body workout

that ensures you continue to push yourself

to the max each session. “These intensive

exercises have an optimum effect on

your muscles, giving a maximum

improvement of their ability to take up

oxygen from the blood, which improves the

cardiovascular condition,” says founder

Jorgen Albrechtsen.

What’s so good about it: Your own

personal instructor will lead you through

Concept 1010’s seven weight exercises, each

of which lasts just one to three minutes –

depending on your ability. Albrechtsen says

the programme is so effective that brides

will need just one 20-minute workout per

week – so it’s ideal for brides on the go.

Cost: From Dhs1,950 for 10 sessions.

Best for: Busy brides who would rather

taste-test wedding cakes than spend every

evening in the gym. Four sessions are

available for Dhs499 for new members only.

outdoors while being being put through your

paces by macho men who shout a lot, but with

serious physical results to show at the end of it.

It’s worth the trade off.

What’s so good about it: You’ll burn 400-
