SAFE & HEALTHY FAMILIESIn 2013, the PGE Foundation turned its focus to prevention pro-grams. Our efforts in hunger included grants to farming and garden projects at Friends of Zenger Farm, Growing Gardens, Portland Fruit Tree Project and the Oregon Food Bank. Four of our five grants in domestic violence taught youth how to avoid and prevent violence. Our two-year grant to LifeWorks helped them build a new facility for Project Network, a culturally focused residential drug and alcohol treatment program for women and their children.

The public relations and the arts communities honored PGE Foundation President Carole Morse with two awards in 2013. The Public Relations Society of America’s Portland chapter gave Carole the Ron Schmidt Community Involvement Award for her “outstanding use of public relations to support community improvement.” Business for Culture and the Arts presented her with the John C. Hampton Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts for “giving her time, talent and treasure to Greater Portland arts and culture.”

ARTS AND CULTUREEducating students about heritage, poetry and the struggles of people of color were part of our arts education focus in 2013. The Confluence Project is restoring the legacy of Celilo Falls near The Dalles which was a sacred fishing site for Native American tribes. The PGE Foundation’s grant to Lewis and Clark College for the Wil-liam Stafford Centennial in 2014 will bring Spanish language poetry workshops to communities with large Latino populations. William Stafford was Oregon’s beloved Poet Laureate from 1975-1990.
