    DRILLING AND ADVANCED RIG

    TRAINING (DART) SIMULATOR

    IN ASSOCIATION WITH KCA DEUTAG

    Our innovative DART simulator provides a full-scalereproduction of an offshore platform or land rig. 3Dgraphics of the rigs drill floor are projected onto a60ft long cinema screen. As the student operates the

    equipment, the simulation depicts realistic graphics andsound effects to simulate what the driller would see andhear on the rig. Students use the immersive experience

    to train for real drilling situations and challenges,including well-control scenarios.

    PROFESSOR JOHN STEEL

    Head of SchoolProfessor Steel is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellowof the Energy Institute (FEI). He has a researchbackground in monitoring and diagnostics using novelapplications of acoustic emission. His work has involvedextensive collaboration with industry from acrossEurope for applications to reciprocating machines and,in particular, monitoring and management of powergenerating engines.

    DR RICHARD BUTLERDirector of Postgraduate Teaching

    Richard holds an Electronic Engineering degree,a PhD degree and has a background in the

    telecommunications industry, working in the designand development of optical fibre transmission systems.He is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institutionof Engineering and Technology (MIET) and a SeniorMember of the Institute of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineers (SMIEEE).

    Richards research interests include the modelling andperformance analysis of digital communications systemsand networks, and the development of performancemonitoring strategies for telecommunications systemsand networks.

    IBIYE IYALLA

    Course Leader, Subsea Engineering

    Ibiye has an MSc in Oil and Gas Engineering. He is aChartered Engineer and is involved in the face to face,distance learning, blended learning and corporatedelivery of our energy courses. He is also involvedwith research in the School. Ibiye has previouslyworked as an Underwater Engineer carrying outoffshore site surveys, rig moves and rig positioning.His professional interest is in Drilling, Completions andSubsea Engineering.

    HEATHER GORDON

    Course Leader, Asset Integrity ManagementPrior to her appointment as Course Leader, Heatherundertook research roles in Proof of Concept Projects,and retains interest in Maintenance Optimisation.Heather has a degree in Electronic and ElectricalEngineering and has professional experience in a varietyof areas including quality assurance, health and safetyand production management.

    DR ALAN OWEN

    Course Leader, Offshore Renewables

    Dr Owen is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered EnergyEngineer and a full Member of the Energy Institute. Arenewable energy researcher since 2002, Dr Alan Owenis the Northern Research Partnership Reader inRenewable Energy and Clean Technology at RGU, andcurrently holds the position of Director of CUSP (Centrefor Understanding Sustainable Practice). His principalenergy research focus is on the engineering andexploitable resource assessment challenges of tidalcurrent energy.

    JOHN BISSET Course Leader, Drilling and Well Engineering

    John holds an MSc in Offshore Engineering and recentlyworked as engineering team lead and mentoringposition with a major service provider.

    His varied industry background includes miningexploration, mud logging, pore pressure prediction,mud engineering, drilling engineering, drillingequipment design, engineering analysis and training.His consultant well engineering work included drillingequipment design, involvement in a major drillingre-design project and well engineering design andoperations tasks.

    GEORGE KIDD

    Course Leader, Oil and Gas Engineering

    George is registered as a Chartered Engineer and is aMember of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers(IMechE). He has a degree in Mechanical Engineeringand is currently the Schools academic representative

    on the local Aberdeen Maritime Branch (IMarEST, RINA& IESS). He has worked within the industry for over 40years starting out as a marine engineer and fulfilled avariety of roles during the design, construction, plantinstallation and commissioning of vessels for service in

    the merchant navy and the oil and gas industry.

    Georges research interests include combustion,condition monitoring, IC engines, and alternative/renewable energy systems.

    DR CHRIS MACLEOD

    Course Leader, Communications & ComputerNetwork Engineering

    Chris has a BSc in Physics and Electronics; an MSc inInformation Systems and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence.He is a member of the Institute of Physics and aChartered Physicist. Before joining RGU in 1995 he wasa Research Scientist with Hughes Aircraft Company forsix years, working mostly on communications systems in

    the USA. He has extensive experience in analogue

    electronics and specialises in radio systems design.

    STEVE BUTTON

    Course Leader, Petroleum Production Engineering

    Steves oil industry background includes tubingconveyed perforating, Xmas Trees/Wellheads,Actuators, Multilateral Completion Technology, CoiledTubing, ESP/By-Pass Systems, Insert String

    Completions, Wireline Tools and most recently WellEngineering Risk Analysis. In all Steve has 25 years of oilindustry experience gained with the service andconsultancy sector at all levels from hands-on offshoreoperations to sales, marketing, technical director andmanaging director levels.

    In 2006 Steve completed an MSc in Oil & Gas Engineeringat RGU and after a short spell back in industry working forDrilling and Risk Consultancy businesses, Steve joined the

    teaching staff at RGU in 2007.

    Petroleum EngineerA petroleum engineer is involved in nearly all stages

    of oil and gas field evaluation, development andproduction. The goal of a petroleum engineer is tomaximise hydrocarbon recovery at a minimum cost whilemaintaining a strong emphasis on reducing all associatedenvironmental problems. Petroleum engineers aredivided into several groups: petroleum geologists findhydrocarbons by analysing subsurface structures withgeological and geophysical methods; reservoir engineerswork to optimise production of oil and gas via proper wellplacement, production levels, and enhanced oil recoverytechniques; production engineers manage the interfacebetween the reservoir and the well through such tasksas (but not limited to) perforations, sand control, artificial

    lift, downhole flow control and downhole monitoringequipment; and drilling engineers manage the technicalaspects of drilling both production and injection wells.

    They all work in multidisciplinary teams alongside otherengineers, scientists, drilling teams and contractors.

    Network EngineerNetwork engineers are responsible for installing,maintaining and supporting computer communicationnetworks within an organisation or betweenorganisations. Their goal is to ensure the smoothoperation of communication networks in order to providemaximum performance and availability for their users,such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. Networkengineers may work internally as part of an organisationsIT support team, or externally as part of an IT networkingconsultancy firm working with a number of clients.This role may also be referred to as network support,support engineer, IT support engineer, helpdesk support,network administrator, Novell support engineer, first-linesupport, second-line support, security engineer andnetwork architect.

    Drilling EngineerA drilling engineer develops, plans, costs, schedules

    and supervises the operations necessary in the processof drilling oil and gas wells. They are involved from initialwell design to testing, completion and abandonment.Engineers are employed on land, on offshore platforms,or on mobile drilling units either by the operating oilcompany, a specialist drilling contractor or a servicecompany. The role can involve administering drillingand service contracts, engineering design, the planningof wells and supervising the drilling crew on site.Drilling engineers work with other professionals,such as geologists and geoscientists, to monitor drillingprogress, oversee safety management and ensure theprotection of the environment.

    Subsea EngineerSubsea engineers are involved in any structuralengineering taking place beneath the surface of thesea. They design, build and install mechanical systemsused under the ocean, such as underwater pipelines andpumps, transportation equipment, subsea wellheads andoffshore drilling rigs. They need to have a good workingknowledge of all types of underwater equipment andvehicles. They may also be involved in underwater data

    collection, which entails using imaging technology orremotely operated vehicles to gather information.

    Subsea engineers use both traditional and high-techtools, such as computer-aided design (CAD) systems,to create realistic geometric models of drills and rigs,which can simulate and analyse the effects and potentialproblems of designs (e.g. machine malfunction andslowdown). They may also work with oceanographersand other scientists to determine locations for drillingas well as teams of other engineers and professionalsto design an interface between the subsea structuresand the well.

    Reservoir EngineerReservoir engineers analyse the production potential

    of a petroleum reservoir. They study the behaviour andcharacteristics of a petroleum reservoir to determinethe drilling and extraction methods that should be usedto optimise oil or gas recovery. They gather data fromvarious sources to produce a development plan, usingcomputer models to simulate production conditions.This enables them to identify risks and forecast thelikely outcome of events and possible interventions,to maximise reservoir yields and performance. Decisionson the numbers and locations of wells depend on thesemodels, as do development programmes, such ascommissioning additional wells or recommending theemployment of enhanced recovery technologies (e.g.

    water injection to simulate flow). Reservoir engineersmonitor and update the model as necessary during thelifecycle of the reservoir.

    Communications EngineerCommunications engineers work within a number ofsectors, including internet and computing technologies,networking and telecommunications and radio, oftenapplying both their technical expertise and theirmanagement skills. Managerial responsibilities involve

    planning and managing projects, ensuring that theyare delivered on time, within budget and to the agreedstandards of quality, while the technical role includesusing specialist knowledge to design and deliversolutions, as well as providing technical guidance toothers within the employing organisation.

    RENEWABLESAn EU-wide study estimated that renewable energy hasthe potential to create over 900,000 new jobs by 2020.Studying renewable energy resources and sustainability

    provides essential skills and knowledge to enter a widerange of roles in a rapidly growing sector. Careers canrange from technical-level jobs in areas such as design,engineering and planning, through to research anddevelopment, consultancy and project management.

    Asset Integrity ManagerAn Asset Integrity Manager is responsible for ensuring

    an asset performs its required function effectivelyand efficiently whilst protecting health, safety and theenvironment. The industry definition of Asset IntegrityManagement is that it is the means of ensuring that thepeople, systems, processes and resources that deliverintegrity are in place, in use and will perform whenrequired over the whole lifecycle of the asset. AssetIntegrity Managers are often the company focal pointfor the asset life cycle, from the design of new facilitiesto maintenance management to decommissioning.An effective Asset Integrity Management system willmaintain the asset in a fit-for-service condition whileextending its remaining life in the most reliable, safe and

    cost-effective manner. Asset Integrity Managers are vitallyimportant at helping to lead organisations towardSocially Responsible Management, looking after thesafety of people, the prevention of environmentalpollution and minimising risks of disasters to assistcompany profitability.

    Project EngineerThe role of the project engineer can often be describedas that of a liaison between the project manager and the

    technical disciplines involved in a project. The projectengineer is also often the primary technical point ofcontact for the customer. Typically responsibilitiesinclude schedule preparation and resource forecastingfor engineering and other technical activities relatingto the project. They assure the accuracy of financialforecasts, which tie in to project schedules and ensureprojects are completed according to project plans.Project engineers manage project team resources andtraining, and develop extensive project managementexperience and expertise. When project teams arestructured so that multiple speciality disciplines report tothe project engineer, then two important responsibilities

    of this role are inter-discipline co-ordination and overallquality control of the work.

    Field TripsWe organise a number of field trips

    DART TrainingDrilling and Well engineering studentsparticipated in training sessions on KCADeutags DART (Drilling and Advanced RigTraining) simulator. Students used the fullvirtual reality simulation and experiencedreal drilling situations and challenges,including well-control scenarios.

    RigTrain (Weatherford) visitThis visit to the drilling rig facility at theBridge of Don, Aberdeen, allowed students

    to see a real full-size rig, with its hoisting,rotating and circulating systems and enabled

    them to appreciate some of the challengesinvolved in practical rig operations.

    Subsurface Field TripA geological field visit designed to introducepetroleum geology for non-geologiststudents. Those who participated used thespectacular exposures of Permian strata asonshore outcrop analogues for some of the

    main oil fields or prospects offshore.

    Experienced Industry PractitionersAll of our courses are delivered by industryexperts who are either still currently workingwithin their specialist field or have movedinto academia from industry; allowing us

    to provide well-rounded courses coveringboth theory and practical application.

    Industry Resources

    at a distance. The ODL course uses the same material and contentas the full-time on-campus course and is delivered by the samesubject specialists, to the same learning outcomes.

    Individual ProjectIn order to complete the full MSc you will submit an individualengineering research project with an industry focus. This isdesigned to allow you to demonstrate the skills and knowledgegained through the course along with integrating and implementingresearch methods, whilst being of practical relevance.

    WHO SHOULD ATTEND

    This course is suitable for those who hold an Honours degree inEngineering or related discipline at level 2:2 or above and typicallyhave at least two years relevant industrial experience. However

    those with other qualifications but with considerable appropriaterelevant industrial experience may be considered. Students fromNigeria should have a 2:1 or above in Engineering or arelated discipline.

    This course is aimed at practising oilfield engineers and managerswho already have at least two years oil and gas industry experience.
