Introduction

2013 PEDESTRIAN COLLISION SUMMARY 3Home

In 2013, police investigated 516 pedestrian related collisions involving a total of 542 pedestrians. This is a9.8 percent increase total pedestrian collisions from 2012. Forty-five of the 542 pedestrians were killed, andanother 473 were injured. Consistent with previous years, more male pedestrians were involved in collisionsthan females at a ratio of 1.49:1. One of the age groups with the highest number of pedestrian involvedcollisions was adults between the ages of 46 and 55. Pedestrian-involved collisions in Phoenix comprised2% of all total collisions, 6% of all injury collisions, and one-third of all fatalities. Pedestrian collisionsaccounted for the greatest percentage of fatalities among all modes of transportation, followed by vehicle-vehicle collisions. This report highlights specific details of the 2013 pedestrian collisions, including the relationships betweenwhen crashes occur, age, gender, location, and impairment. The Street Transportation Department can usethis information to design safer walking environments and to educate both drivers and pedestrians onpedestrian safety. The overall goal of compiling these data is to make pedestrian collisions less frequent andsevere and in turn make the city streets safer for everyone.

NOTE: Some figures in the 2013 Pedestrian Collision Summary differ from 2013 Traffic Collision Summary due to the detailedanalysis of crash reports.

Street Classification Examples

Freeways are I-17 (Black Canyon Freeway), I-10, Loop 202, on-ramps, access roads, etc.

Arterial streets are typically the mile-line streets such as 7th Ave, 16th St, Camelback Rd, and Union Hills Dr as defined on the Phoenix Street Classification Map.

Collector streets are typically the half-mile-line streets such as 39th Ave, 28th St, Roeser Rd, and Maryland Ave as defined on the Phoenix Street Classification Map. Local streets are typically the neighborhood streets such as 88th Ln, Dromedary Rd, Holly St, 21st St, and Glenn Dr and are not defined as arterial or collector streets.

The 2013 Phoenix Pedestrian Collision Summary documents thecollisions involving pedestrians in the City of Phoenix throughout the2013 calendar year. Collision data utilized for this report were acquiredthrough Phoenix Police records and the database maintained by theArizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) known as Safety DataMart (SDM). The 2013 Phoenix Pedestrian Collision Summary wasprepared by Aaron Feldberg (ASU Student Intern) with assistance fromJacob Martinez (Senior Engineering Technician) and Richard Russ(Principal Engineering Technician).

The SDM database includes motor vehicle crashes involvingpedestrians that occurred on public right of way where someone wasinjured or killed or where property damage exceeded $1,000.
