MISSION STATEMENT

“Cali-Camp at Big Rock Ranch is dedicated to enriching the lives of children through the outdoor experience. We will provide an opportunity where both campers and staff are encouraged to be the BEST they can BE in a nurturing, safe and fun environment.” THE ”GOALS” and “Outcomes” OF CALI-CAMP ARE…

Goals Outcomes To introduce activities to campers as a vehicle to learn and develop new skills while enjoying themselves.

Campers will develop skills in the new activities and will be able to go home at the end of the summer and take up a new activity as an afterschool program or take lessons to improve on the skills that they began to develop at camp, ie. Tennis, gymnastics, archery, caroms, ping pong, rock climbing, ropes climbing, basketball, soccer, drama, swimming.

To build campers’ self- confidence and encourage personal growth.

Campers, through their involvement in activities will develop more confidence and be more willing to try new things in front of others. They will feel good about themselves and in turn will gain more friends and play more sports and activities in their lives.

To teach our campers life skills by which to improve their relationships with themselves and others through the participation of activities.

Campers learn how to make friends and keep them. They also learn how to get along in groups which they take back to school and in their personal friendships. They will learn skills to enrich their social lives.

To provide leadership opportunities to help our campers achieve their personal best.

Campers that learn leadership will gain skills and be more confident at school and in their extra curricular activities.

To develop in each camper an appreciation for our natural surroundings including a concern for the environment and the desire to help preserve it.

Campers will be able to go home and implement many of the sustainable practices they learn at camp through our Nature program such as recycling, re-using, edible plants, conservation and preservation etc.

To educate campers in developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for the differences in people.

Campers will be able to go back to school and deal with people in their lives. They will be more tolerant and appreciative of the differences in their peers and people they meet in their daily lives.

All of Your Questions Answered

WHAT HAPPENS ON MY FIRST DAY? ► The first day of camp is full of excitement for new and experienced campers alike. The Cali

Camp Staff will do all they can from the first moment to comfort your child, put any fears to rest and make for a positive and fulfilling camp experience begin on their first day.

► As a parent you can assist by having your child prepared and on time for the bus. The child

should be ready early for his first day of camp. The bus counselor will have a "FIRST DAY NAME TAG" on the bus for your child. All campers, on their first day of camp, will be asked to wear this name badge to assist with group placement, orientation and name learning by the staff and other group members. This name tag is to be worn during the entire first day by each camper. Staff members also wear nametags to help everyone learn their names.

► When the bus arrives at camp and each new child exits, he/she will be greeted by our Staff

and Junior Counselor Greeting Team and accompanied to our "Round Up Area" at the stage in the lunch area. It is here that campers, staff, specialists and directors gather each day to begin activities. The 3, 4 and 5 year old campers will be escorted to the front tables in the lunch area. Your child is pre-assigned to a group and then introduced to their counselors and fellow campers of that group by the Director.

► At Cali Camp children are encouraged to ask questions; please help us to reinforce the act of

questioning where to go, what to do, where to place belongings, etc. This will provide the camper with the needed support to "not be afraid to ask.”

► New children are starting camp each week. Our staff has been trained to always facilitate

camper orientations and to assist with introductions and the welcoming of new friends within the group.

HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH BUS IS MINE? ► Each camper on his first day will receive a bus bracelet with their bus number on it to assist

children in remembering which bus to get on at the end of the day. Each bus will have a corresponding station number in the window.

► There will also be a bus mascot, which is a soft cuddly toy animal by which children can

associate. The animal will be given a name by the campers on that bus and it will be a means of bus identification throughout the summer for your child.

► The operations director, camp director, leadership team and transportation staff are on the

parking lot at the end of each day to assist any child needing assistance. Tell your child that no one leaves until every camper is on the correct bus, we have taken roll and a final and correct count from each driver is confirmed. Campers should be encouraged to speak with any of the directors and staff at boarding time should they need assistance.

4

Page 6: 2013 Parent Camper Handbook

ARE THERE ACTIVITIES THE FIRST DAY OF CAMP? ► Activities will be held the very first day of camp; however, it is best to remember that this day is

somewhat different than other days. There are staff introductions, introductions to groups and activity areas, program orientations, new friends and counselors to meet and greet.

► This takes time! Please explain to your child that the first day’s activities are somewhat modified. ► Even though the day’s schedule varies, campers should still bring their swim suits, towels, long

pants and lunch; they will be participating in activities. ► Campers who start during the remaining days of week one and during weeks two through nine will

be introduced to their group and counselor in the morning at the round up area (at the stage). Ongoing orientations will be provided by the counselor and specialists throughout the day as the camper experiences the various activity areas.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CAMP? ► Play clothes are most comfortable and shorts are most desirable. Please have your child bring a

pair of long pants (sweat pants are preferable) to slip over the shorts during the activities of horseback riding, mountain bikes, hiking and go-carts. A swimsuit and towel are needed at camp daily. A sweatshirt should be brought for inclement weather (colder mornings) and on beach trip days. All clothing should be MARKED with your child’s name!

► Campers must wear closed toe shoes to camp. Tennis shoes or sneakers are preferable. OPEN

TOE SANDALS ARE NOT ALLOWED! Sandals may be worn during a beach trip, but only at the beach. Children in Wrangler Camp must wear boots or hard shoes with heels and long pants while riding. NO CHILD WILL BE ABLE TO RIDE IN TENNIS SHOES!

► On many occasions during our theme weeks we have dress up days. The dress up days are listed

in the Special Events Calendar found on page 21. Most campers participate in dress up. All staff members and directors dress up! All campers are encouraged to participate in this fun and joyous events. These are fun days; and dressing up, with an opportunity to win an award for best dressed, can be a positive motivation for your child. Please assist and encourage your child to participate in our dress up activities.

5

Page 7: 2013 Parent Camper Handbook

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY CAMP CLOTHES? ► If ordered online, a certificate will be given to the camper at lunch. They will be able to go to the Camp Shack and

pick out the color camp T-shirt, hat or backpack. ► Apparel can be purchased online or at the Office with cash or checks or a credit card. HOW DO I FIND LOST CLOTHING? ► All personal articles, especially T-shirts, hats, backpacks, towels, swim suits, shorts and sweatshirts should be

clearly marked with the camper’s name. On dress-up days please remember to put camper’s names on costumes. Mark your child’s clothing in a very visible area (preferably on the back of the shirt neck or waist band of pants) with first and last name. MARKED ITEMS ARE EASILY RETURNED TO CAMPERS AT THE END OF THE DAY OR ON THEIR NEXT CAMP DAY.

► The Lost and Found procedure is to display the lost items at the close of the day on the day it is found. If it is

unclaimed it is deposited into the appropriately marked barrel located behind the stage. Items with names clearly marked will be returned by calling out names, hand carrying the item to the camper and/or returned in the bus-clothing bag. Items without names are displayed the day they are found. If unclaimed they are placed in the appropriate labeled containers located behind the stage.

► The lost and found storage containers are very accessible to campers. Each container is labeled and has in it

different items such as shirts, backpacks, pants, swim suits, towels, hats, etc. ► It is suggested that you check with your child each evening as he arrives home to make sure that items have not

been left at camp. If an item has been left at camp, please call the camp immediately. Our office will be most happy to assist you in locating the lost items.

WHAT ABOUT SPECIAL ACTIVITIES?

Horsebackriding – Pony rides: Campers who are 3, 4 and 5 years old will receive horseback (pony) rides at least once per week. They will be introduced to horsemanship skills using ponies and small horses. Campers must wear long pants when they are scheduled for riding. It is a good idea to bring long pants in the backpack (sweats work well) every day in the event your child’s schedule gets changed and horseback riding is added. Campers will not be able to ride without long pants. We keep extra pairs of pants at the riding arena, but it is most comfortable to bring and wear your own. All children must wear helmets for protective reasons. Helmets are provided by the camp. For those children ages 6 – 14 that are desirous of horseback riding, the Equestrian Camp Program is provided. Please see the Riding details on page 15 in the handbook. Swimming – Each camper is ability tested to determine swimming skill levels prior to participation. Children that pass the skills check will have recreational swimming. Lessons are for non-swimmers only. Campers who do not pass the skills check will spend part of the period in swimming instruction and the balance will be recreational swimming. The 3, 4 and 5 year olds will have lessons every day. Each child will bring home a swim fact sheet after his/her first day in camp. It provides the parent with information pertaining to the swim checks and the type of instructional program offered. All campers are expected to bring their towel and swim suit to camp daily. Those campers who do not swim must remain in the swim area while their group is swimming. They are supervised in the table games area that is adjacent to the pool. The Cali-Camp Swim Check consists of your child’s ability to perform the following fundamental swim skills as approved by one of the certified pool staff members: A. Two widths of the crawl stroke - without resting poolside or having assistance. Camper has successfully displayed knowledge and use of arm and leg movement while keeping his head above the waterline. B. Back float - Camper has displayed an efficient back float, using arms and legs for implied sculling as needed, and has been able to keep his chin and head above the water level while performing a back float. C. Treading water - A twenty second exhibition of the camper’s ability to stay afloat in deep water; with the use of sculling techniques implied if not actually known by camper. D. Breath holding - Camper has exhibited ability to hold breath, fully submerged count to five (holding breath) and then resurface. High Ropes Challenge Course – Children age 7 and above will have the opportunity to build confidence and increase their balance skills when placed on the forty-two foot high challenge course. Campers must wear safety helmets and a waist harness; they are anchored with automatic hydraulic belay ropes. Specialists for this program are trained to instruct campers in this fun and challenging activity.

7

Page 9: 2013 Parent Camper Handbook

WHAT ABOUT LUNCH? ► Campers may bring or buy their lunch each day. ► Campers should have their lunch packed in either a paper sack or a lunch box. The camper should have his name written on the

outside of the bag or container. ► All lunches brought from home are stored at your child's group shelf in a shady area. Refrigeration is not available. Please do not

send any perishable foods. If you do, many families send ice packs in camper lunches to keep food cold. ► The cost to purchase lunch is $12.00, and the fee can be paid daily by the child as he enters camp each morning or paid in advance.

If lunches are purchased ahead of time, the camper’s name is placed on a list and is checked daily as the camper receives his lunch identification band. You are encouraged to pre-purchase lunch for the entire summer. This will eliminate your concern about the daily handling of money by your child. Call the business office to make this arrangement.

► When your child walks into camp, he stops at the lunch desk directly in front of the main office, pays the fee or gives his name (pre-

paid lunches) and is given a lunch wrist band. At lunch time campers go through the lunch line and will have their wrist bands removed. If a camper forgets to stop or comes to camp late, then provision for lunch purchase is available at the beginning of the lunch period.

► Our “Cali-Café” will be open in the mornings from 8:30am till 9:15am and again at lunch. In the morning we will offer a variety of

healthy options including, but not limited to, homemade muffins, bagels and cream cheese, yogurt and fruit cups, cereals and juice. ► Our new lunch menu consists of healthy options, entrée’s and assorted side dishes. Newly designed Lunch Menu included on page 9. ► All campers will have a choice of milk or ice water with their lunch every day. ► Juice packets and individual bottles of water are available for purchase at the “Cali-Café” in the morning and during lunch. We

discourage campers from bringing sweet sodas to camp in their lunches; juice boxes and bottled water are most desirable. ► Gum Chewing is not allowed at any time in camp or on the camp bus.

WHAT ITEMS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT CAMP? ► The “Cali-Café” is open to campers before camp and during lunch only. ► Snack items offered are a variety of healthy choices and will be available after campers finish their lunches

each day. ► Camp souvenirs, such as Cali-Camp rash guards, mascot animals, bracelets, water bottles, skateboards,

specialty T-shirts, caps, backpacks, tank tops, etc. will be available at the “Cali Camp Shack”. ARE THERE OUT OF CAMP TRIPS? ► The oldest co-ed day camp group will have weekly beach trips, rotating from Thursday to Friday each week

(beginning Week 2). ► If you prefer that your child does not participate on the scheduled trip, please notify our program team leader

immediately so that your child will be placed with a similar age group on that particular trip day. ► There will be special notices for information pertaining to the Friday overnights. Children ages 6 and up are

invited to attend. See the calendar on page 24 for the exact dates. Overnight enrollment flyers will be sent via email, handed out in camp one week prior to the event and be available on our website. Registration and payment (check or credit card) for the overnights are made separately to the business office.

DO I NEED TO BRING EQUIPMENT FROM HOME? ► Cali Camp provides all of the necessary equipment including skateboards, safety gear, bicycles and

protective helmets (when needed) for campers to safely enjoy all of the camp activities. Wranglers and skateboarders may bring their own marked helmets.

► All personal toy animals, electronic games, phones, toys, radios, laptop computers, i-pads, walkmen, i-pods,

and CD players are not permitted in camp or on the bus to and from camp. We feel that this type of equipment is not in keeping with our philosophy and the outdoor experience that Cali Camp offers; therefore, these items must remain at home.

► Cell phones are not allowed at camp! We are out of the cell phone range! If cell phones are brought out at

camp they will be held in the director’s office until the end of the day, marked with your child’s name and given back prior to the bus ride.

► Pets, jewelry, watches and other valuable items should be left at home. ► Cali Camp is not responsible for any personal or athletic equipment that is brought to camp!

10

Page 12: 2013 Parent Camper Handbook

DO I NEED MONEY AT CAMP? ► For the most part, money at camp is not needed except for the “Cali-Café”. Campers buying lunch will have to bring $12.00 each day. You do have the option to pre-pay for your child's lunch. Call our office for

details. ► Healthy snack items are on sale in the “Cali-Café” for .50¢ to $3.50. ► Souvenirs cost $3.50 - $20.00 at the Camp Store. All prices are posted and will be posted on our online

registration.. Please do not send your child with large amounts of cash. Older campers may bring between $5.00 and $10.00 when attending a beach trip.

CAN PARENTS VISIT THE CAMP? ► Visitors are welcome during the activity day. (For policies regarding bringing guests to camp see Page 16). Please use

the following procedures for visiting camp:

1. Inform your child of the fact that you will be visiting.

2. Check with the office as to the best time to visit. Some days have special time schedules and are inconvenient for visiting.

3. Do not ask your child to meet you at the office at a set time. We will take you to your child's group when you arrive.

4. For security purposes you must check in at the main office upon arrival. You will receive a guest name tag that

must be worn at all times.

5. If, on the day of your visit, you plan to bring your child in the morning or take your child home please inform the office for security and accountability purposes. You must sign in and sign out your child at the main office.

6. While observing your child you are asked to stay in the background and observe unless you are invited to

participate. This invitation will be extended by the counselor. If you do participate please do so with a level of "moderation". You are not as young as you used to be! Parents have been known to be so over zealous in their attempt to display their athletic skills that they have injured themselves.

7. Please refrain from speaking with the counselor for a long period of time. The counselor has the responsibility of

supervision and should not be away from the group for conversational purposes. There may be other times that are more appropriate to speak to the counselor about your child. You can speak at great length with the Staff Supervisor – Team Leader who is ultimately responsible for communication between you, your child and the counselor.

11

Page 13: 2013 Parent Camper Handbook

Medical Information

The safety and concern of your child is of paramount importance to us. Since your child will be in our care it is extremely important that we be prepared to assist him at any time should a need arise. You have received a health history form which can be completed online on our website prior to the start of camp. Please be sure that you have completed it entirely on both sides and that it is properly signed in all of the required areas on both sides.

CAMP NURSE / FIRST AID SPECIALIST ► We employ either a Camp Nurse, EMT or First Aid Specialist (FAS) for the entire summer. This person’s

basic responsibilities are to convey all necessary medical information to the counseling staff, dispense prescribed medication if requested, take care of your child and contact you and/or your physician in a medical emergency. During the course of the day the Nurse / EMT / FAS is stationed in the Health Center.

► Daily responsibilities consist of caring for minor first aid injuries, administering medication brought from

home, record keeping and communicating with parents. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is readily available should there be an emergency that is beyond our control. The Paramedic Rescue

Team is located at our local Los Angeles County Fire Department Station 69 is three miles from camp. ► The nearest hospitals are West Hills Emergency or Santa Monica, UCLA Medical Center. Our first action will

be to contact you and your child's physician. We notify parents of all illness, head injuries and insect stings immediately. It is important that in the event of an emergency you, or someone designated by you, be available to drive to camp and take your child to the medical treatment center of your choice.

FIRE, EARTHQUAKE AND TERRORISM PROCEDURES ► Our staff receives orientation during staff training on all Emergency Procedures. We have evacuation drills

weekly with the campers. All drivers have maps and instructions on the use of the 5 exit routes from within Topanga Canyon. If we are requested to leave camp then we go to designated parks in the City – Temescal Cyn. Park or Valley – Balboa Park. In the event of a disaster, and we are confined to camp, we have provisions of food, water and medical supplies to last for three days.

THE USE OF MEDICATION ► If your child is taking prescribed medication which must be administered at camp please send it in the

original container, inside a sealed bag and give it to the bus counselor. The medication should be clearly marked with first and last name and the instructions for usage should accompany this medication. The driver will give the medication to the Camp Nurse/EMT/FAS upon arrival at camp. All medications are kept in a locked area. At the conclusion of camp the left over medication will be sent home with your camper or mailed home.

Cali Camp is proud to be offering Aerial Arts Camp for Boys and Girls Ages 5 - 14. Aerial Arts Camp will be offered in nine (9) one (1) week sessions: Monday through Friday. Your child will be in the safe hands of FOCUSfish Specialists, participating in aerial trapeze, silks and lyra lessons and performances; as well as poi, juggling, acrobatics & hula hoop activities for 2 1/2 hours each day. After lunch, cirque activities are balanced with three other camp activities, including daily swimming.

Visit FOCUSfish's website to check out more information on the programs they offer. FOCUSfish will also be operating at Big Rock Ranch throughout the school year for afternoon programs.

CAMPER IN LEADERSHIP TRAINING (CILT) In addition to our regular camping experiences for boys and girls grades 7-8 we offer a Pre-Junior Leader Training program. Campers enrolled in this program will spend half the day learning leadership skills, assisting counselors with groups and then reviewing the skills and techniques that were practiced. 1st year CILTS must participate in a 5 consecutive day program for one week; 2nd year CILTS will spend more time assisting counselors and working with children. Once the 5-day program is completed a camper may attend less than 5 days per week. The remainder of the day will be spent participating in regular camp activities. A special application must be completed for this limited program. There is also a separate fee schedule for this program that is available Weeks 1-9.

In order to provide for the continuity of learning these skills, campers must enroll for one week sessions, Monday through Friday. Basketball: Weeks 3, 6, 9 Soccer: Weeks 1, 4, 7 Tennis: Weeks 2, 5, 8

EQUESTRIAN CAMP

This program spans many different skill levels (ages 6-14), ranging from experienced campers to those that have never even seen a horse before. Equestrian campers will spend half of their day at camp with horses and the other half participating in regular camp activities (always including swimming). Our riders will learn horsemanship skills at all levels from beginning to advanced and must attend Monday through Friday. Equestrian Camp’s one (1) week sessions are limited to 20 campers per morning session and 20 campers per afternoon session, and within each session the kids are broken up into beginning, intermediate and advanced riding groups. All riders are required to wear long pants and must wear hard toed shoes with heels in order to participate in the program. If your child is an advanced rider we ask that they bring their own helmet with them. We provide helmets for the newer riders, however once the kids start jumping, it is important to have a helmet that is perfectly snug and most comfortable. There is a separate fee schedule for this program and it is available Weeks 1-9. Any child within the appropriate age range may enroll for one or more weeks!

The dates are listed in the special event calendar found on page 24 in this handbook. The overnight offers campers first grade and above a diverse program of free choice camp activities consisting of gymnastics, go-carts, tennis, archery, ropes course and other fun areas. After dinner there is an evening swim party, bingo and a campfire with songs and skits. A hearty dinner and breakfast will be prepared for all those in attendance. DROPPING OFF CAMPERS IN THE MORNING

We encourage you to encourage your children to ride on the bus. Our philosophy is that camp begins and friends are made from the moment they step on the bus. Bus Counselors lead songs and games each day. Should you need to drop

off your child… please arrive between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. Please pull into the parking lot, drop off your child with a staff member and proceed out the exit gate. Should you have a need to go to the office please follow instructions as to where you park. Parking is for 10 minutes only. Where you park is quite critical since the camp buses must follow set parking procedures and they require extra turning space. If you are bringing your child to camp late you must check in at the main office for accountability purposes to prevent him from being listed absent.

PICKING UP CAMPERS IN THE AFTERNOON

Please pick up your child at 3:45 PM. Please park in the parking lot and come to the front office to check out

your child. If you have a need to pick your child up from camp early, please inform your child that morning. Please park in the center area of the parking lot and proceed directly to the camp office. This office is located right through the entrance to the camp area. Check in the office and make sure that an office staff member has checked out your child by name and bus number. There is a sign out sheet. Please write neatly. This procedure is important for accountability purposes at the end of the day. If you have arranged for some person other then yourself to pick up your child then make sure that you have identified them and that they have a written authorization.

AFTER CAMP EQUESTRIAN PROGRAM

We offer a variety of after camp horseback riding lessons. Your camper does not have to be enrolled in Equestrian Camp to participate. Please call the office to inquire about availability and pick-up times. (310) 455 - 0404

SWITCHING BUSES …IS NOT ALLOWED!!!

Campers are not allowed to switch buses to or from camp. The bus in which the camper comes to camp is the same bus taken home. If campers are going to someone else’s home or other destination, then the parent must provide alternate transportation.

Transportation Guide

INTRODUCTION

As a parent of a day camp child you will most likely have many questions concerning the transportation program in camp. This guide has

been created to explain, in detail, Cali-Camp's transportation program. It will answer many questions, provide you with new information and

allow you to become better acquainted with this facet of our camp program.

INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE

The Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol have complete jurisdiction over our vehicles and drivers. The CHP

inspection includes maintenance records and daily driver inspection reports on each vehicle. It also includes an evaluation of each

individual’s driving record. Although the CHP inspects Atlantic Express’ buses at their bus yard, we have complete access to maintenance

reports and driver history.

SEAT BELTS AND CAR SEATS

All of the buses come equipped with lap seat belts. All children are required to use the seat belts. If you are the parent of a younger child

and would like to provide a car seat you are welcome to do so. We will return the car seat in the afternoon when the child departs the bus.

DRIVER SELECTION/PREPARATION

Cali Camp participates in the selection of the hired drivers; we want to make sure it is someone who has a history of being kind and safe.

We do have a handful of camp staff that are drivers that drive for beach trips and the mountain biking program. The DMV requires that each

driver be at least 18 years of age, possess a current Special California Class B Driver’s License and have a good driving record. Each driver

must complete a medical examination (which includes drug testing) and the DMV Commercial Drivers bus driving test. While, our drivers

are trained and prepped at Cali Camp, they must take their test at the DMV, which includes not only a drive and skills check but also a pre-

trip inspection assessment. Drivers will also attend safety awareness meetings that are scheduled throughout the summer.

BUS SUPERVISION

The State Law does not require supervision on a school bus, other than the driver. We provide a supervisor, known as the Bus Counselor, on each bus. The role of the bus counselor is to assist campers on the bus, control safety, lead singing and games, and

provide any other assistance that may be needed. In the event that the bus counselor is absent and we do not have an alternate

available then the driver is solely in charge.

THE PARENTAL POINT OF VIEW

Riding the camp bus is fun - it is different - and it is a very definite part of camp! Our philosophy is that the camp day begins when your child steps foot on the bus. Each morning as your child enters the bus there will be greetings by the driver, the bus counselor and camp

friends. While riding the bus your child will have an opportunity to meet new friends, share experiences and participate in bus songs and

games. This is a very valuable extension of the camp day. Each bus has a name, number and a stuffed animal that is the bus mascot.

Each week your child and his/her bus camper friends participate in the “Bus Cup Challenge.” This is a camp activity where each bus learns

songs during the week and then they present their rendition of each song as they arrive at camp on Thursday and Friday mornings. The

bus groups are judged each morning, and awards for 1st, 2

nd and 3

rd place are given each week in the special “Bus Cup Challenge

Ceremony” on stage. There are many aspects of social and emotional growth that take place while riding the camp bus. Please allow your

child to enjoy this experience by reinforcing and inspiring positive thoughts about the bus ride to and from camp.

DRIVER COMMUNICATION

Our Transportation Director is in the office each day at 7:00 AM. This person contacts each bus counselor every morning to provide any

camper schedule changes and to confirm the pick-ups that are scheduled for that day. When you desire a schedule change you must contact the office directly by phone. You may not make any changes with the bus driver or counselor. If you know in advance

about a schedule change then please call between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. If your child is sick the night before or

the morning of camp call the office immediately. If you call after hours the transportation office will make sure to get your message and

notify your bus counselor. After May 1st you have three free schedule changes; any changes after that will incur a $25 charge. During the

summer, and prior to your child starting camp, the transportation office will contact you by phone to inform you of the driver and bus

counselor’s name, your designated station, the AM Boarding and Departure times and the PM Arrival time.

STATION TIMING

All of the stations are between 5 - 45 minutes away from camp. The bus counselor will be waiting at the station for 15 minutes before

departure. This is called boarding time; you may drop your child off at any time during this window, however please keep in mind that we

have a small amount of time to get the kids to camp and will always leave at the scheduled time. There can be extenuating circumstances

(such as traffic) that may cause a bus to arrive late in the afternoon, however we ask the parent to plan on arriving 5 minutes prior to the

established pick-up time in the afternoon. Generally the kids feel anxious if the person that is picking them up is not there, so we ask you to

be on time.

19

Page 21: 2013 Parent Camper Handbook

ESTABLISHING THE STATION

Each station is established in order to assure minimal driving time, safety, efficiency and maximum comfort for both the camper and the

driver. Although a short ride to camp for each child is desirable, the stop closest to your home location has a direct bearing on the

duration of your child's bus ride. There are seventeen (17) separate stations with pre-established pick up times, you are welcome to

choose any of them. There are nine routes in the City, six in the Valley and two in Topanga. For the complete location and time

schedule please visit our website www.calicamp.com. The following is a list of the policies and procedures that apply to our

transportation program.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

1. The bus is scheduled to arrive at the same location each day. Clock time is determined by the driver’s watch.

2. Cali-Camp reserves the right to change a pick up or drop off point due to unforeseen circumstances.

3. The bus counselor will wait at each AM location for a 15 minute boarding time, and will depart promptly at the scheduled time.

We will not wait for late campers.

4. In the afternoon we ask parents to be at the designated station 5 minutes prior to the planned arrival time.

5. The bus will stop only at the designated station.

6. If the bus has left its station in the AM then it is the parent’s duty to get to another station or drive their child to camp.

7. Should a parent assign someone else to meet the child you must notify the Cali-Camp office. The child must be able to recognize

the individual meeting him or her.

8. A family may not change from one station to another.

9. Parents should plan to meet at their designated pick up and drop off points five (5) minutes prior to the scheduled time.

10. In the PM, parents must come to the bus, be seen by the bus counselor, and personally take their child from the bus.

11. Parents may elect to have their child walk home from a pick up point.

12. If parents carpool then the other children are to remain under the supervision of the parent in charge for both the AM and PM

pickups on that day.

13. Should a child not be met at the end of the day in a timely manner the driver and bus counselor will wait with that child for a fee.

TRANSPORTATION FEE

The cost for transportation is included in the camp tuition. There is no cost reduction if you drive your child to and from camp. You can

also elect to drive one way and have your child transported the other way.

BUS ASSIGNMENTS

DUE TO SPACE LIMITATION ON EACH BUS, ATTENDANCE ACCOUNTABILITY AND SAFETY WE DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO BE PICKED UP OR TO GO HOME ON A DIFFERENT BUS. A CHILD MUST ARRIVE AND DEPART ON THE SAME BUS. When

a child desires to go to another child's home and both children are on the same bus then a written note in advance should be given to

the driver. If a camper must leave camp early, then it is the parent's responsibility to make arrangements for early pick up. The parent

must pick up the child at camp in the main office and sign for the child's release. Friends or relatives may pick up the child with written

permission from parents and notification to the office.

EMERGENCY BUS PROCEDURES

Each vehicle possesses a first aid kit, emergency warning markers, a fire extinguisher, a cell phone and a packet containing emergency

procedures and phone numbers. The driver and bus counselor have been fully trained as to the proper use of the equipment and the

procedures in the event of an emergency.

BUS RULES

Bus Rules slightly vary depending on the driver and bus counselor; however these are general rules that always apply. These rules are

to be followed at all times:

1. Never chase the bus or any vehicle near the bus.

2. Remain seated at all times.

3. Always wear your seat belt.

4. Do not put your arms or head out of the window.

5. Never throw anything out of the window.

6. Don't chew gum or eat on the bus. Water is the only thing allowed to be consumed on the bus.

7. We do not recommend bringing any iPods, cell phones or other electronic devices to camp. We are not responsible for any lost,

stolen or broken devices.

8. You must, at all times, follow the directions from the driver and the bus counselor.

9. Tell your bus counselor if you have any problems or if you need help while on the bus.

10. Always go to the restroom before boarding the bus.

11. Enjoy your ride to camp!

It is our hope that this guide has given you a better understanding of our transportation program. We look forward to providing you and

your child with an excellent transportation program for the coming summer.

Yours for quality transportation in day camping,

Ariel Rowin Ariel Rowin
