LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Builder and Associate members of the Deep East Texas Association of Builders (DETAB), I would like to welcome you to the 2013 Parade of Homes. This event provides our members and others the opportunity to showcase new homes in your area and allows you to visit several new homes to see firsthand some of the newest building sciences, innovative technologies and design features as well as great new products. Our goal is to assist you in making the decisions necessary to build your new custom home, buy a new home or remodel your existing home. We believe the more you know the better prepared you will be to make the best long term decisions for your family. You will find building professionals on site at each home ready to answer questions and offer solutions.

DETAB is a non-profit organization serving six counties with only one foundational goal, that of protecting the American dream of home ownership. We are often times the only home owner advocacy group representing your interest in Austin and Washington. Our desire is to do all that we can to ensure affordable housing. Texas has been blessed with a strong and vibrant economy with new families moving into this great state every day. Housing that is affordable, safe and sustainable is critical to our continued growth. You can count on DETAB to help protect your dream too. DETAB will host our annual Home Products Show in March of 2014 at the Lufkin Civic Center. We hope to see you there as well. Your support of our two signature annual events will help ensure our ability to be in Austin and Washington to represent you and other home owners. DETAB members are also members of the Texas Association of Builders and the National Association of Home Builders. You can look to our members for quality products and services. Thank you for attending the Parade of Homes.

YouthBuild

DETAB has partnered with YouthBuild of the Pineywoods, a project of Goodwill Industries of Central East Texas, to help 18- to 24-year-old at-risk men and women lift themselves out of bad situations and into productive lives by learning the skills needed to work in the building trades industry.

Rick Renfro, DETAB President, said the organization is all about the American Dream of home ownership.

“These young people want and need our support so that they can succeed in their own American Dream. The home building industry needs young people to become engaged in our industry and provide a ready workforce to build new homes in our communities. This program is a win-win program for DETAB and the YouthBuild participants. We are honored to be a partner with YouthBuild of the Piney Woods,” Rick said.

In February, 27 applicants were selected to take part in the very first YouthBuild program in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area. Most of the participants are on probation and have not earned a high school diploma or their GED. Those are the very individuals Nikki Roberts, YouthBuilld program director, and Howard Smith, YouthBuild construction manager, were looking for when they started this program.

A grant from the federal government (DOL), YouthBuild is a national program that also has programs in various areas around the world as well. During the 24-month program, participants are helping build housing for low-income families, participating in construction-related service-learning activities that connect learning with civic engagement and they are developing relationships with construction-industry employers who may serve as mentors.

By August, 20 of the participants earned their Home Builder Institute Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training Certificate and each has earned the first of four National Center for Construction Education and Research Certificates (NCCER). Many also have earned their GED. All 20 have their Office of Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 cards.

“All 20 of these students have increased their education level by at least 2.2 grade levels in either reading, math or language,” Nikki said.

The students spend 30 hours a week either in a classroom,

the shop or on the job site working on a Habitat For Humanity house. The classroom section teaches some construction skills but focuses on teaching life skills, including financial education.

Prior to entering the program, all of the participants go through a Mental Toughness Orientation, just to help ensure they are well prepared to go the distance in the program, Nikki said.

With donations of tools, siding, trusses and more, by many of the DETAB members, the program is succeeding in its mission. DETAB members also are being sought to be mentors. Nikki and Howard also bring two or three participants each month to DETAB’s luncheon meeting, which provides the participants the opportunity to interact with not only builders but others in the business community. The participants also have the opportunity to speak to the group and explain what they are learning in the program.

“This program will have a tremendous impact on our community,” Nikki said. “I think this allows the community to see an untapped resource; to see a different side to these young men and women. If we can get past the stereotypes and look closer at them, we will see how much they have to offer. They just need the opportunity, and this program is giving it to them.”

The Texas Association of Builders (TAB) MissionThe Texas Association of Builders is dedicated to creating a positive business environment for the housing industry by addressing the housing issues of the people of Texas.

YOU DESERVE THE BENEFITSAssociation - Just a fancy word for folds sharing a common interest

Each person is part of one in some form or fashion like church memberships, gym memberships, school clubs, sports teams, non-profit groups... the list goes on. But what about one specifically designed to help you grow your business, to keep you informed of changes in legislation, to offer educational courses and updated safety videos and to provide you more opportunities to involve your company in local service projects? I know what you may be thinking, “I don’t have time to add one more thing to the proverbial plate,” but the benefits your business will receive will far outweigh the cost to your pocketbook and your busy schedule.

If you are a local builder or part of the building industry, there are three associations your company should be part of. The first step is to join your local home builders association, The Deep East Texas Association of Builders (DETAB), which automatically makes you a member of your state association, Texas Association of Builders (TAB) and your national association, National Association of Home Builders (NAHM). Outlined below are a variety of benefits offered through membership of these associations. The greatest benefit may be, however, that members only do business with other members. Members refer other members, network with other members, and develop camaraderie with other members. It not only benefits your business, but it also projects a positive image of your company to the community. Specific companies within the counties you serve offer special members-only discounts to one another and work together on professional and community projects. Association; a positive way to stay involved, informed and invested.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME BUILDERS MEMBER BENEFITS

NAHB offers plenty of resources to help each member make the most of this investment and connect with the benefits they value most. Take a look at the great discounts offered as part of a NAHB membership:

•Lowe’s Home Improvement: Additional 2% off the Business Credit of 5% off

• GMC: $500 credit toward a purchase or lease

•FedEx: up to 29% off shipping

•FedEx Freight: up to 70% off on LTL (less-than- truckload) shipments over 150 lbs.

•Dell: 2% - 10% off a variety of products

•Hertz: save up to 20%

• Avis: free upgrades, $20 off weekend rental, $30 off weekly rentals

•Budget: up to 25%

•HP: a variety of discounts on computers and printers

•Office Depot: free delivery in local areas with an order of $50, 10% back in rewards on some products

•Endless Vacation Rentals: 25% off rental properties

•Wyndam: 20% off “Best Available Rate”

•FTD: 20% off all plant and flower orders

•Omaha Steaks: 10% off your entire order

For a complete listing of all member services and benefits, please visit our website at www.nahb.org

NOT A MEMBER?

Join DETAB Today!DETAB (Deep East Texas Association of Builders) are professionals dedicated to strengthening the home building industry by serving one another and the community through education, charitable partnerships and government involvement. DETAB represents the counties of Angelina, Houston, Trinity, Polk, and San Jacinto with over 100 members. This association is comprised of members who deeply care about their community, maintain awareness of the latest changes to laws and legislation that effect their businesses and stay abreast of market trends. These members network with another, support one another, and keep each other informed.

According to a national study, approximately 85 percent of all business failures occur in companies that are not members of their trade association.

The cost of membership pays for itself when you take advantage of member programs on products and services that you use everyday. These are offered by all three associations that are included in a 3 in 1 membership. Once you become a member of DETAB, you are automatically a member of the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) and the National Association of Builders (NAHB).

Reasons to become a member of a Home Builders Association (HBA): 1. Strength in numbers.

2. Legislative and regulatory advocacy at all levels of government.

3. Project a positive image of your company to your customers.

4. Gain a competitive edge and broaden your knowledge.

5. Support your community.

6. Expand your professional network.
