President’s Message
I am immensely grateful in this moment for the opportunity to welcome the
Honorable Ministers, Ambassadors, Partners, Sponsors, and guests into your
presence Heavenly Father, and to wish them a warm welcome to the 9th
Annual Nevisian Association of Washington, DC, Honors Ceremony.
We are gathered here not only to celebrate the accomplishments of the Nevisian media indus-
try, but also to celebrate each other. The media sector is an important part of our nation’s eco-
nomical, cultural, and political development. The media provides Nevisians a diverse range of
platforms that empower individuals and organizations to make considered decisions about their
economic, social and political lives. And we take it as a given that in a knowledge economy and
an age of networked intelligence, better-informed societies are more successful.
NEV-DC represents a vibrant segment of a Diaspora striving for academic excellence, social
awareness, and economic empowerment. Our dynamic group is made up of individuals who
share the same dream and aspirations for community and nation building.
In keeping with our vision of bridging the gap between Nevisians at home and in the Diaspora,
the organization launched two programs earlier this year:
The NEV-DC Educational Fund which addresses social and economic obstacles to a child’s educa-
tion by providing assistance with school supplies, school meals, and the sponsorship of the annual
spelling bee competition, at both the Primary and Secondary school levels, in Nevis
The NEV-DC Mentorship Program which seeks to provide potential college students
(mentees) with an opportunity to gain valuable career guidance and a framework for career
planning through a one-on-one partnership with a seasoned professional.
We offer special thanks to our Donors, Partners, Sponsors, and Members who have given so gen-
erously of their resource, while working tirelessly to make this event a great success. We are es-
pecially thankful for the commitment and dedication of our the executives and the various com-
mittees.
Please join me in giving God thanks as we celebrate the accomplishments of our honorees the
Nevisian Media Industry, as well as this organization. May God grant you his richest blessings,
and may you be protected by the supreme blood of Lamb, as you return home to family and
friends.

TO: The Nevisian Association of Metropolitan Washington, DC
FROM: Representative Dr. Sheryl Williams Stapleton
RE: 9th Anniversary of NEV-DC
It is with great pleasure that I write this congratulatory memo expressing my thanks along with
all Nevisians regarding the nominees for the media and the communication awards. If it was not
for each one of you and your organization or company, many of us living abroad would not have
had the opportunity to keep in touch with Nevis at the touch of our finger tips with technology.
We are very proud of the accomplishment of each media, communication, and broadcasting enti-
ty on the island of Nevis. So at this time, I am honored to congratulate NEV-DC on their or-
ganization excellent service of recognizing the media.
It is once again an honor for me to recognize and congratulate NEV-DC on another anniversary.
The selfless attitude and the devotion of your members to assist with helping Nevisians at home
and abroad are of great value to all of us. The improvement and technological communications
of the media has benefited all Nevisians everywhere.
Once again, thank you for your service for all of us and congratulations to the honorees.
Sincerely,
S.W.S SHERYL WILLIAMS STAPLETON

Evered Webbo Herbert Keynote Speaker
Evered Herbert aka Webbo hails from Mt. Lily village, St. James parish, Ne-
vis. However, he spent most of his formative years in Charlestown where he
attended Charlestown boys and later Charlestown Secondary School (CSS). He graduated from
the Charlestown secondary school in 1975.
An avid sportsman, he represented the Charlestown Secondary School, Nevis and the Leeward
Islands youth cricket teams. He also served as commentator at all athletic events on the island
including cricket, football, and netball.
After graduating from CCS, Webbo worked for several government institutions including the
customs and treasury departments. He later taught at the Gingerland High School (GHS). He
migrated to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and then to the United States Virgin Islands
where he attended the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus. In 1987, Webbo
completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting. At the commencement exercises he deliv-
ered the remarks on behalf of his class.
In 1988, he returned to Nevis to manage the newly opened Voice of Nevis (VON) radio station
which was instituted by his uncle Merit Herbert with whom he had worked while he was in Tor-
tola, BVI. Webbo had no formal training in radio broadcasting, but had acquired good business
acumen and his uncle was convinced he would accomplish the task.
In 1989 hurricane Hugo wreaked havoc on the Caribbean. This proved to be an enormous chal-
lenge to the radio station, but was met head on by Webbo and a young energetic staff that pro-
vided a source of information and comfort for relatives and friends during that period. Storms
in the 1990s and early 2000s also served to bring out the fortitude of Webbo and his team
In its 25 years of existence Webbo and VON Radio have received many awards and accolades
including the prestigious EQUUS financial and journalism award in 2003/2004. Sir Probyn
Inniss former governor of St. Kitts and Nevis on the 25th anniversary of VON radio said of
Webbo “when I think of Webbo I think of the voice of reason.” VON radio and by extension
Webbo have provided exceptional public service to the people of Nevis, and the Caribbean region as a whole.

Radio Paradise
In the early 1960’s Radio Paradise moved from Dutch St. Maarten to St. Kitts and Nevis. Since
1992 it has been owned and operated by the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), the world’s
largest religious broadcaster.
This 50,000-watt Caribbean A.M. frequency reaches out to the many islands of the Caribbean,
including Cuba, offering listeners an audio feed of TBN’s television programming, along with
regional Christian programming.
The mission of Radio Paradise has always been community focused. According to Mr. Andre
Gilbert, General Manager (GM), “We use radio to minister to our listeners and to administer the
gospel and to make ourselves more accessible to different churches and faith-based organiza-
tions.”
In 2008, Radio Paradise launched a website with a view to expanding their listenership on an
international level. The vision for the website was that it would bring TBN broadcast to listen-
ers in other parts of the world. It would allow the listeners to see the radio personalities and it
would enable them to get updates on different projects taking place.
The TBN GM also noted that he envisions many changes to the radio station programming and
outreach efforts which he hopes to make in his tenure. These include:
Setting up phone lines where persons who have made a decision to become a Christian
can call in and ask different questions about the Christian faith.
Promoting the radio station more so that it can be more visible and it can have a greater
impact on the community and the region at large.
A humanitarian mission whose purpose is to provide medical assistance to the residents
of St. Kitts and Nevis
Radio Paradise want to reach out to the community, not just in St. Kitts, Nevis but also
in the other islands as well.
Earlier this year TBN donated its longtime 50,000-watt Caribbean A.M. radio station, Radio
Paradise, to Flowing Streams Church in Vero Beach, Florida. Flowing Streams and its senior
pastor, the Rev. Rick Wiles, produce a daily international radio talk show entitled Trunews,
and will use Radio Paradise to extend its Christian message throughout the islands of the Carib-
bean.

Nevis News Cast
The Department of Information was properly established in 2001 having being upgraded from
the public relations unit in the Premier’s Ministry. The Public relations unit previously pro-
duced a weekly news program entitled ‘The Week Gone By’.
The Late Honourable Malcolm Guishard took the lead in upgrading the services of this unit as
he believed that much more could be done to improve the image and increase the information
regarding the Nevis Island Administration to the general public.
One of the avenues used to achieve this was the ‘Nevis Newscast’, which began as a newscast
which aired 3 times weekly and within 6 months had evolved to a nightly newscast as part of
the overall programming on Nevis Television, Channel 8 on the local Cable Television service.
The Department of Information also uses an email distribution service where news stories are
sent to various media houses within the federation and across the region and internationally for
posting online or publication.
The Department previously operated a Website but due to a rather exorbitant cost our major
outlet now is on the Nevis Island Administration website www.nia.gov.kn as well as local web-
sites.
Since its establishment the Department of Information has sought to embrace the various tech-
nological platforms to better distribute the message of the Nevis Island Administration.
The department is actively engaged in social media, operating two Facebook pages one of which
the nightly Nevis Newscast is posted along with Minister’s speeches for the persons who want
to view on demand and the other Facebook page hosts our news articles. The Department also
provides live video streaming for Parliament and other major events for our international view-
ers.
The mission of the Department of Information is:
TO DISSEMINATE INFORMATION THAT WILL IMPROVE THE PUBLIC’S AWARE-
NESS WITH REGARD TO THE POLICIES, PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES OF THE
NEVIS ISLAND ADMINISTRATION AND PROVIDE THE HIGHEST QUALITY MEDIA
SERVICES TO OUR CLIENTS, UTILIZING THE BEST COMBINATION OF AVAILA-
BLE HUMAN RESOURCE SKILLS AND TECHNOLOGY.

Voice of Nevis-VON radio-the eastern Caribbean’s powerhouse began broadcasting to the peo-
ple of St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider Caribbean on June 18, 1988.
The brainchild of managing director, Mr. Merritt Herbert had finally become a reality, under
the guidance of the first general manager, Mr. Evered “Webbo” Herbert.
Exactly fifteen (15) months after the official signing on of the station, its strength was tested
when in September 1989 hurricane Hugo swept through the Caribbean.
While other stations were literally blown away, “the powerhouse” stood firm and provided a
source of information and comfort as well as a point of contact for relatives and friends during
that period.
VON radio was also resilient in 1995 during hurricanes Louis and Marilyn and also accom-
plished similar feats when hurricanes George and Lenny struck in September 1998 and Novem-
ber 1999.
Besides the hurricane coverage, the first 15 years has been crowned with hundreds of signal mo-
ments.
The flagship program “let’s talk” hosted by manager Mr. Evered “Webbo” Herbert has become
a permanent fixture in broadcasting here in the federation and further afield.
From its inception the program has consistently hit the airwaves every Tuesday evening since
1992.
In December 1995, another significant dimension was added to the station’s programming.
In keeping with its wider mandate, the VON news line was officially launched by Prime Minis-
ter and Minister of Information, Dr. Hon. Denzil Douglas on December 1, 1995.
The station’s programming includes the morning inspiration program, Weather watch, morn-
ing, lunchtime and major news packages complimented by news minutes at 10 am, 2 am and 4
pm, Monday to Friday, community news and information, funeral announcements, country
favorites, health tips, road safety tips and religious programming on Sundays, sports special
program, the On the Mark Show, the airing of the OECS news link and the youth on the go
program.

vis Island Assembly sessions, hurricane Hugo poem contest, St. Kitts/Nevis federal elections,
Nevis island assembly elections, political debates in 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2001…..

BVI general elections, re-opening of the Charlestown port, launch of the Shemere Norford
crime fighting fund, Herbert’s beach affair , Nevis secession referendum, solar eclipse 1998,

………VON’S Super Saturday Madness, opening of long point deep water port 1998, agricultur-
al open day activities, official opening of Vance W. Amory International Airport ,the inaugural
flight of American Eagle to Nevis in 1993 and Nevis island assembly election petition case and
appeal.
In 2000 VON radio forged an alliance with web developers net.kn on St. Kitts to take the 895
AM signal into cyberspace, we can be accessed at www.vonradio.com , we can also be contacted
at [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]
VON radio has also spearheaded a partnership with Caribbean cable communications and the
Nevis island government press and public relations department to ensure that Nevisians at
home and abroad were able to view the electoral process at work for the first time during the
Nevis island assembly elections of September 7th, 2001.
After some 22 years broadcasting on the 895 AM dial, VON radio changed its frequency to 860
AM in 2010.

NEV-DC Educational Fund; Established 2013
Purpose: To provide assistance to Nevisians at home and in the diaspora, to facilitate the pursuit of education at
the Primary and Secondary levels. The intent is to minimize or help eliminate any impediments to our children
being able to fully participate in the learning experience. We aim to address social and economic obstacles by
providing assistance with school supplies, school meals, and the sponsorship of the annual spelling bee competi-
tion, at both the Primary and Secondary school levels, in Nevis.
To accomplish this, we are designating three separate funding pools, geared to honor the sponsors and to provide
for better internal controls, accounting and reporting. NEV-DC’s leadership will dictate the recipient and
amount awarded, based on an evaluation and approval of the student’s written request for assistance, and avail-
able funds. The three NEV-DC education funding accounts follow:
NEV-DC’s Dr. Simeon Daniel Educational Fund: This fund will be financed, at a minimum, with an annual
NEV DC organized Memorial Day raffle, to honor the passing of the late, first Premier of Nevis, Dr.
Simeon Daniel. Funds generated from the raffle, along with any donations specifically designated, will
assist in providing less fortunate children in the Primary and Secondary schools, on Nevis, with neces-
sary and required school supplies. These supplies may include, for example, school clothing and/or ma-
terials, which the child’s family is having difficulty providing, and if not assisted, will impede the child
from attending or adequately performing in school.
NEV-DC’s Dr. Lornette Mills Rawlings Educational Fund: Dr. Lornette Mills Rawlings is a medical doctor
raised in Nevis. This fund is primarily sponsored by her donations and is established to provide neces-
sary school meals assistance to help nourish the Primary and Secondary school student’s body and
mind, thereby, facilitating adequate school attendance and performance. Additionally, this fund will
also support the annual Primary and Secondary school spelling bee competition. This will be done by
assisting in financing, for example, prizes and trophies, to increase and improve vocabulary knowledge
and use.
NEV-DC’s General Educational Fund: This fund is developed to accommodate any receipt of donations or
proceeds not specifically designated to the two funds above. This fund will be distributed to eligible
needy Nevisian students, both at home and in the Diaspora, to support their full pursuit of education by
assisting in financing necessary school supplies and/or tuition.
The above three funds will be managed under established procedures and internal controls to prevent fraud,
waste and abuse; Also, NEV-DC will ensure periodic accounting and reporting of receipts and disbursements,
fund balances and disposition, documentation of assistance requests and responses, and public access to related
information and activities via NEV-DC’s website (www.nevdcbridgesmag.org).

NEV-DC Mentoring Program; Launched August 2013
The Nevisian Association of Washington DC (NEV-DC) Mentorship Program
seeks to provide prospective mentees with an opportunity to gain valuable
career guidance and a framework for career planning through a one-on-one
partnership with a seasoned professional.
Mentoring is a valuable strategy to provide students with the emotional and
instrumental support students need to achieve the goal of a college degree.
By providing information, guidance, and encouragement, mentors can play
an important role in nurturing students 'college aspirations, helping them
prepare for their careers.
NEV-DC Mentors will provide potential mentees/students with important
information about college preparatory courses, financial aid and internships.
Dr. Gilbert Daniel successfully mentored Kyndra “Monique” Liburd, the
2007 St. Kitts- Nevis States Scholar for Caribbean Examinations Council’s
Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examinations (CAPE). She did her intern-
ship with Dr. Daniel at his Medical Practice Accent on Health, LLC in Wash-
ington, DC. Currently, Ms. Liburd is enrolled in medical school in pursuit of
her academic dream to become a Medical Doctor.
Mentoring will help mentees develop skills and behaviors necessary to suc-
ceed professionally
