Top Land Cruiser Advantages Over Escalade
Cadillac Escalade has something of a personality conflict. It contains the kernel of a rugged body-on-frame GM SUV, but it has the perception of being a bling-mobile. So, even after all these years, a big question hangs over it: Is Escalade more surface than substance?
Land Cruiser buyers never have to ask that question because this Toyota has an impeccable résumé. Its off-road credibility has been forged in more than 60 years of service in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. As this Edge will show, the updated 2013 Land Cruiser is all about substance, on road and off.
AdvAnCEd TEChnOLOgy No matter how you challenge Land Cruiser, it’s up for just about any mission. It has the power and capacity demanding owners require.
•Multi-terrain ABS Land Cruiser’s ABS reads the surface conditions and adjusts its operation automatically. Escalade’s ABS doesn’t adjust for surface conditions.
•dynamic Radar Cruise Control In Land Cruiser, DRCC helps maintain a distance from the vehicle ahead, making for easier highway travel. Escalade doesn’t have distance pacing.
COMFORT And SECuRiTy One of Land Cruiser’s strong points is its inviting, comfortable interior. It’s a great place to spend some quality time behind the wheel, on or off road.
•Safety features Land Cruiser comes standard with features like active front headrests, not available on Escalade.
•Four-way-adjustable second-row seats Land Cruiser’s second-row seating can be optimized for leg room or cargo room. Escalade’s second-row seats don’t have a slide adjustment.
•Four-zone climate control Land Cruiser boasts four separate temperature zones for better passenger comfort. Escalade has three zones.
OFF-ROAd ABiLiTy Land Cruiser has both rugged off-road hardware and innovative electronic systems to help conquer almost any terrain.
•Kinetic dynamic Suspension System (KdSS) KDSS optimizes the suspension for both on road stability and off-road articulation. Escalade doesn’t have anything like it.
•Five-Speed Crawl Control with Off-Road Turn Assist In rough terrain, this “off-road cruise control” lets the driver concentrate on steering. This feature is not available on Escalade.
•Multi-terrain Select / Multi-terrain Monitor Land Cruiser lets the driver dial-in the surface condition for optimized traction, and monitor the area immediately outside the vehicle. Escalade can do neither.

20I3 LAND CRUISER vs. 20I2 CADILLAC ESCALADE
There are three types of Escalade, each available with RWD or AWD. The Escalade EXT is a 4-door pickup and is related to the Chevy Avalanche; the Escalade ESV is a long wheelbase SUV on the Chevy Suburban platform. Those models don’t compete with Land Cruiser, so they are not included here. This Edge focuses on the regular Escalade, which shares its platform with the Chevy Tahoe. Escalade has an available hybrid powertrain that adds almost $11,000 to the MSRP, pushing its price well above Land Cruiser’s. For that reason, the hybrid is not included here.
Here are some of the major features of the regular Escalade grades.

KDSS controls the effectiveness of the front and rear stabilizer bars through a set of hydraulic lines. The stabilizer bar is adjusted for maximum effect on road (for less body roll in corners) and minimum effect off-road (for better suspension articulation).

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)
multi-terrain aBS
Land Cruiser’s ABS can distinguish between on road and off-road driving conditions, and it adjusts control to suit. As a result, braking capacity is optimized over a wider range of road conditions. Escalade doesn’t have a multi-program ABS.

5-Speed Crawl Control with Off-Road Turn Assist4
Standard Not available
Five-Speed crawl control with Off-road Turn assist
Five-Speed Crawl Control, up from 3-Speed Crawl Control in 2011, is like off-road cruise control. New for 2013 is Off-Road Turn Assist, which enhances Land Cruiser’s ability to make sharp turns while using 5-Speed Crawl Control1. Escalade drivers are on their own.
multi-terrain Select / multi-terrain monitor
After the driver selects one of five surface conditions (mud, loose rocks, etc.), Multi-terrain Select (MTS) coordinates with the A-TRAC traction control system to optimize traction and drivability. Meanwhile, Multi-terrain Monitor integrates front-, side- and rear-mounted cameras that allow the driver to see areas immediately outside the vehicle. Escalade has nothing comparable.

Multi-terrain ABS Standard Not available
Dynamic radar cruise control
When driving at highway speeds, Land Cruiser’s Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) helps to automatically maintain the driver-selected pre-set following distance behind the vehicle ahead2. Escalade’s cruise control isn’t that sophisticated.

Four-zone climate control
Because Land Cruiser has four climate comfort zones standard, even rear-seat passengers can have the indulgence of individual climate controls. On Escalade, two rear zones are not available.

Safety features
Escalade has many safety features, but Land Cruiser goes further by including items not found on the Cadillac. Specifically, knee airbags for driver and front-seat passenger, and front active headrests.

Front active headrests Standard Not available
Four-way-adjustable second-row seats
Land Cruiser provides second-row seat passengers with some of the luxuries usually reserved for front seat passengers, such as four-way adjustable seating. This also lets the owner optimize for leg room or cargo room. The second-row seat in Escalade doesn’t adjust.

1 The Land Cruiser is designed to meet most off-road driving requirements, but off-roading is inherently dangerous. Abusive use may result in bodily harm or vehicle damage. Toyota encourages responsible operation to protect you, your vehicle and the environment. Seatbelts should be worn at all times. 2 Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is designed to assist the driver and is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving practices. Please see your Owner’s Manual for important instructions and cautions.

2010 land cruiSerSince Land Cruiser’s beginning in 1951, the iconic utility vehicle has garnered much success thanks to a winning combination of utility and capability. How else could such a model have lasted more than five decades? But Land Cruiser has matured to offer more than performance and capability on the unpaved – it delivers comfort and confidence, too. Land Cruiser has developed such a reputation for off-road prowess that in some parts of the world, it’s an essential.
