The Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure is a huge success thanks to our Race teams, which run the gamut from large corporate, hospital and school teams to small family and personal teams, which are often in honor of a survivor or in memory of someone who succumbed to breast cancer.

Teams are the driving force behind the Race. They not only contribute to the event’s spirit and sense of community, but also provide a significant source of revenue by raising lots of donations.

Every year, new teams are formed, joining those who have been part of the event for years. Thank you for your support.

Team Requirements: uAll teams must have a Team Captain – The Team Captain is responsible for all team communications and organization.

uTeams must have five (5) members or more.

uEach team must have a team name – Pick a name that best fits your group. Make it humorous, serious, or just straightforward.

uOnce you have a team captain and your team has been formed.

uTeam Members can now register!

The Team Captain will be responsible for recruiting team members, encouraging fundraising, and maintaining the team page, which can be customized to show your team goal and fundraising progress. Don’t forget to write down your username and password. You will need this to access your Race Center.

Team Member Registration: Register team members – Every team member has to register using the “Join a Team” link on the registration page found at www.komennyc.org/race. Team members may also register using the paper application form.

l If you plan on registering additional team members, please remember to sign- out of My Race Center, otherwise it will keep you logged in and will not allow you to move forward with the process.

lAdditionally, if you plan on registering many people at one-time, to make it easier on yourself, contact teams@komennyc.org to help you with mass registration if being paid for one individual/sponsored by your company.

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Go to www.komennyc.org/race and click REGISTER.

2. Click “JOIN A TEAM” button.

3. Type in (enter a team name) and click “Search for a Team” and once it’s found, click “JOIN TEAM”.

4. Choose a Participation Type (read these carefully!).

5. Are you a New User or Returning User? (Make sure you know your user- name and password if returning!)

6. Fill-in your contact information and finish remaining registration questions.

7. Sign the waiver and fill-in billing information.

8. Print confirmation for your records.

n Display posters and save-the-date cards: Display Race for the Cure® materials everywhere you can at work or at school! Cafeterias, restrooms, health clubs, and break rooms are great locations. Drop brochures in your co-workers’ in-bins or on their desks.

n Top Tip: Add stickers with your team name and contact information to make it easy to recruit!

n Race for the Cure® registration forms: These are perfect for bringing to all places mentioned above. Bring them to your next gym class to help you recruit fellow breast cancer awareness advocates to join your team!

n Neighborhood Stores: Display posters, save-the-dates, and registration forms and ask to put them in your local supermarkets, convenience stores, cafes, laundromats, nail and hair salons.

Get excited about the Race! Your enthusiasm goes a long way when recruiting team members.lTalk to your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, church, school, local hospital, etc. now about creating a team for the Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure. Schedule meetings with those interested in creating a team to pick a team captain, come up with a plan and think of ideas on how to encourage more people to participate.

lArrange an employee presentation at work. Breakfast or lunch is a great time to tell your coworkers what Komen Greater NYC is all about. If you’d like a speaker from Komen Greater NYC, just let us know.

lSet up a challenge between departments or other locations. Ask your company to sponsor your team by paying the registration fees.

lUse online tools to spread the word about your Race team. Create a page for your team on Facebook (download our Facebook program, too) or start your own Twitter account and share them with your friends. This is easy and fun!

lDon’t forget to share the importance of this Race with others. It is not just a run/walk, it is a fundraising event which will help fund:

m Grassroots local breast health programs.

m National breast cancer research to find the cures.
