"JCI and the UN, Natural Allies Training" 2013 JCI EUROPEAN CONFERENCE, Monte Carlo, Monaco

From 47 different countries, 2.749 delegates gathered in Monte Carlo, Monaco from May 29 to June 1. This large, dynamic group of JCI members shared ideas and experiences related to creating sustainable impact in their communities and across Europe.

During European Conference together with head trainer Stephan Bouman (JCI Denmark) the first ever “JCI and UN, natural allies” training has been conducted with a massive attendance of delegates (60+). It was as well enlightening about the post 2015 plan for Millennium Development Goals. Development of the training has been done by Stephan Bouman in cooperation with UN Affairs Commissioners Sevinç Atay and Robbert van Waart. UN Foundation Director Christopher Helfrich and his colleague Carolyn Commons were there to create impact with JCI Members.

"UN MDG Showcase" 2013 JCI EUROPEAN CONFERENCE, Monte Carlo, Monaco

At the UN MDG showcase during the European Conference, many best practices in European JCI organizations were shared as we move towards the Momentum meeting the MDGs. The aim was getting up to speed on progress in achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals, learning about innovative and creative projects, discovering new opportunities to create impact towards the MDGs.

UN MDG Showcase started with the introduction of the 2013 JCI UN Affairs Commission Chairman Mr. Keita Endo. 2013 JCI President Chiara Milani honored the showcase with her presence.

To-date the UN foundation has sent over 7 million bed nets, however there are still millions more that are needed to address the problem. Executive Director of the UNF's Nothing but Nets Campaign, Christopher Helfrich and his colleague Carolyn Commons were there to share successes and challenges.

"Tress for Climate Justice" FELIX FINKBEINER

The Plant-for-the-Planet Children´s Initiative was founded in January 2007. It has its origin in a school presentation about the climate crisis of the - back then - 9-year-old Felix Finkbeiner. Inspired by Wangari Maathai, who planted 30 million trees in Africa, Felix developed at the end of his presentation the vision that children could plant one million trees in each country of the world to create a CO2 balance therewith. During the following years Plant-for-the-Planet developed to a worldwide move: At present approx. 100,000 children all over the world pursue this goal. They understand themselves as an initiative of world citizens which campaign for climate justice in the sense of total reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases and a homogeneous distribution of those emissions among all humans. 3-POINT PLAN TO SAVE OUR FUTURE 1. Plant 1,000 billion trees 2. Leave the fossil fuels in the ground 3. Poverty into the museum through climate justice

There is a cooperation between JCI and Plant-for-the-Planet by JCI Tree Counter coordinated by Vanessa Weber from JCI Aschaffenburg. Vanessa says “Pledge on our Global Tree Counter, volunteer and help with tree planting to do something for the children’s future!”

"JCI Challenge for Nothing but Nets!" JCI FRANCE

On May 27 and 28, more than 40 JCI members from 15 countries met in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, France for the 3rd edition of the JCI Challenge. The JCI Challenge is a two-day team-building and sports competition whose goal is to challenge participants physically, work as a team, raise money for Nothing But Nets, discover the French Alps, and network. Two-person teams competed in a tandem bike race, mountain orienteering course, laser sharp-shooting, nocturnal village orientation course, and a bike and run event. Participants, partners, and supporters helped raise more than $2,000 for Nothing but Nets and were praised for their efforts by NbN Director Christopher Helfrich and 2013 JCI President Chiara Milani during the awards ceremony. “JCI Regatta: A journey that brings people together!”

JCI Regatta is set up to organize funds for the JCI Nothing but Nets. The Regatta bought together 10 nationalities, 13 teams, 102 participants. In 2012 JCI Regatta collected and donated USD 25,000 to NbN. Half of this amount was due to Cordaid's doubling. During the 2013 event the organisation was able to find strong partners like DHL, Tempur and Hampshire hotels to support the good cause by donating goods for the auction. In 2013 the auction has led to an amount of $6.000 and doubled by their charity sponsor Cordaid the amount reached $12.000. In 2014 the organization’s aim is to even further increase this amount. In comparison to the 2012 edition, last year's JCI Regatta had a new sailing route in the Adriatic sea in the Zadar area. This route brought the participants from all over Europe - Turkey, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and France - to new and exciting harbors and venues. JCI Regatta won the Best UN MDG Project Award in EC 2013 in Monaco!

JCI Regatta 2014 will take place from August 30 until September 3, 2014 in Split. The registration for the 2014 edition of JCI Regatta is open. Again a new area and a new sailing route and 9 yachts are already booked! Turkey, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands will participate. The organization hopes that they will be able to bring participants from other countries like Italy, Austria, Greece and Croatia on board. And again they will try to gain USD 25,000 for NbN.

"JCI Mosquito Classical Car Rally" JCI GENT ARTEVELDE

The Classic Car Parade was a great success with 42 participants in 17 cars and lots of supporters. This was an original fundraising activity including three activities: JCI Mosquito Classic Car Rally from Gent to Monte Carlo, JCI Mosquito Classic Car Parade in Monte Carlo, JCI Summer BBQ in Gent. For some people it was a dream coming true, as the organization had managed to get some really unique and beautiful cars together especially for this parade and people bought seats and supported fundraising activity.

After this, the delegates met in a very extraordinary location, at the roof terrace of Café de Paris with a magnificent view, a stylish reception with bubbles and plenty of typical treats of Monaco. The reception ended with a visit of 2013 JCI President Chiara Milani. JCI Gent Artevelde raised 3.996,62 Euros for Nothing but Nets Campaign.

At the Café de Paris also over 808,68 Euros were donated and added to this number. Gent Artevelde handed the check to UN Nothing but Nets Foundation Director Christopher Helfrich at the presence of 2013 JCI President Chiara Milani and all the participants.

“2013 JCI Global Partnership Summit: Planning the Next Phase of Global Development” THE NEW YORK CITY, USA

JCI members from all over the world united in the New York City, USA from July 24 to 26 to meet with business, government and civil sector partners and experts to further discuss ways to begin solving global issues; the UN Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and the state of our progress in reaching these goals on the local, national and international level. 2013 JCI Global Partnership Summit was chaired by 2013 UN Affairs Chairman, Keita Endo from JCI Japan.

Notable quest speakers included Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson, UN Foundation Senior Advisor Gillian Sorenson, UN Millenium Campaign Director Corrine Woods, Founding Partner of The Global Growth Institute Wayne Clarke, UN Global Compact Senior Advisor Fred Dubee and the UN Global Compact Executive Director Georg Kell.

On Day two, attendees met in Central Park and split into teams either playing a teambuilding gaze of kickball or spreading advocacy about malaria through a scavenger hunt on the streets. UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets Deputy Director Margaret McDonnel dressed up as a mosquito, helped to educate visitors of the park on the dangers of malaria and the importance of life-saving bed nets. Participants of the project raised more than US $700 to send nets and save lives.

“2013 JCI Global Partnership Resolution“ On the final day of the Summit, delegates gathered in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the UN Headquarters. 2013 Summit Chairperson Keita Endo, joined by JCI President Chiara Milani, JCI Secretary General Edson A. Kodama and the UN Affairs Commissioners, presented the 2013 JCI Global Partnership Summit Resolution. The Summit Resolution expresses two commitments for JCI members around the world: 1. To mobilize and engage 10,000 young people across every JCI community to share their voices as part of the MY World 2015 Campaign – a global survey asking citizens to choose their priorities for a better world – in an effort to shape the post 2015 global agenda. 2. To commit to active participation in developing a post 2015 global agenda by conducting forums in a minimum of 60 countries between now and next year’s summit and sharing the feedback and ideas with JCI World Headquarters. JCI will continue to lead the initiative by bringing together its key partners – the United Nations, UN Global Compact, UN Foundation and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) – to drive the conversation and redefine, enhance and promote collaboration among these important global players. “UN Forum during 2013 JCI GERMANY National Convention in Munich” After the successful training-workshop in EC 2013 Monte Carlo, Monaco, the UN Affairs Commissioners for Europe were invited to organize a similar training-workshop-forum during the German National Convention in Munich, Germany. The full workshop were translated in German in cooperation with JCI Munich Trainer Michael Zuther and Area Director Sara Rueckriemen. 2013 JCI Global Partnership Resolution, MDG Banners, Brochures, MY World Survey and supporting documents were translated into German. During registration all 800 participants received the My World survey, the 2013 JCI GPS resolution and highlights on the partnership between JCI and the UN. This promotion has also been done during the Tradeshow. The documents translated into German were shared with the UN Post-2015, MY World team by JCI HQ.

“UN Forum during 2013 JCI TURKEY National Convention in Kocaeli”

UN Forum has also been organized during the Turkish National Convention in Kartepe, Kocaeli, Turkey. All material including the My World survey were translated in Turkish. MDG Banners and Brochures were provided from the UN Turkey. After the Forum the materials and MY World Survey translated into Turkish were sent to UN Post-2015, MY World team by JCI HQ. During General Assembly the UN Affairs Commissioners made speeches to the delegates and were able to inspire the members. President Milani and

CEATTP Ismail Haznedar were present during this UN Forum.

"10.000 Trees Planting Campaign” JCI TURKEY

During JCI Turkey National Convention, there was a kick-off of the “10.000 Tree Planting Campaign” in the presence of President Milani and CEATTP Ismail Haznedar by planting 10 symbolic trees in Kartepe, Kocaeli. The project of JCI Turkey has the goal to plant other 10.000 trees in the JCI Turkey Forest which is growing since 2010 and this is an action supporting UN MDG #7! JCI Turkey will proceed hand in hand with Stop Talking and Start Planting project of Felix Finkbeiner and Tree Counter that is initiated by Vanessa Weber.

During December 2013 just before the New Year, a donation was raised by young active citizens of JCI Turkey for plating 1.010 trees only in 1 month! During 2014 many activities supporting this tree planting campaign will follow!

“Focusing on Impact during 2013 JCI World Congress in Rio” Rio de Janeiro

On Monday, November 5, 2013 JCI World Congress opened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as nearly 3,000 delegates gathered to create positive change.

On November 8, JCI UN Affairs Commissioners for Europe hosted Post 2015 Global Development Forum. It has been a successful forum with the participation and insights of Laura Hildebrandt, Knowledge Management Specialist Environment and Energy Group Bureau for Development Policy. The participants had the chance to receive working knowledge into the Post-2015 Global Development Agenda process, an overview of the current status of the Millennium Development Goals and motivating and inspiring young active citizens to take responsibility and ownership of the Millennium Development Goals and the post-2015 process.

On the very same day, Congress attendees learned more about how to collaborate with likeminded individuals, partners and fellow active citizens to expand their mutual impact. With a room full of vibrant delegates dancing, cheering and wearing their Area team t-shirts, Spotlight JCI, JCI’s premier World Congress trivia game started with great excitement. Led by two team captains, each Area team competed with five rounds of questions testing their JCI knowledge of events, programs, partners, culture and even the recently adopted 2014-2018 JCI Strategic Plan. The competition was fierce and the winning team turned out to be Team Americas, captained by Bolivar Batista from JCI Dominican Republic and Angelica Lam from JCI Panama.

“Celebrate Impact on JCI Active Citizen Day: December 11” From the United States to Botswana to Djibouti, JCI members and friends worldwide united to celebrate their unique responsibility to create a better world through community projects on December 11, 2013. Always focused on advancing the JCI Mission, Active Citizen Day provides JCI members, friends and partners time to reflect on the past, celebrate the impact of our present actions and look toward an exciting future.

History of Active Citizen Day On December 11, 1944, 30 young active citizens from eight countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the United States – met in Mexico City to sign a declaration that led to the establishment of Junior Chamber International. Throughout the years, JCI members have taken the opportunity of this day to organize projects in their communities. Now, 69 years later, JCI members continue to serve their communities by creating sustainable impact and expnding JCI’s global movement through local action. JCI Izmir’s Waste Reduction Awareness

3 main objectives: raise awareness, mobilize and encourage the public and

target all groups to concentrate on waste reduction, product reuse and material recycling and third to assess common behaviors regarding consumption and waste management patterns.

Trained 12,000 students in Izmir about waste reduction awareness. “Waste from art” exhibition and a performance of theatrical pieces about

waste and marine pollution. Coastal clean-up involving volunteers from the public, an informational

booth at one of the biggest Sunday markets and waste management meeting partnering with the business sector.

Won the European Union award as the best project out of more than 7,000 projects worldwide.

project “Entrepreneurship for Everyone” Supporting the social integration of persons with physical disabilities by

directing them to launch and develop their own businesses. JCI members with business expertise mentored people with physical

disabilities from rural areas of Moldova.

“Join JCI and the UN Millennium Campaign ”

As the 2015 deadline for achieving the MDGs approaches, JCI has expanded its partnership with the UN and our collective efforts toward global development by uniting with the UN Millennium Campaign, the World We Want Platform and the MY World global survey. JCI and the UN Millennium Campaign will collaborate to unite the global community to create and implement the post 2015 global development agenda.

During the 2013 JCI Area Conferences, World Congress and National Conventions JCI UN Affairs Commissioners collaborated with Organizing Committee members and delegates to develop a number of forums and opportunities to contribute the voice of young active citizens. Recognizing the opportunity these platforms created to contribute the feedback of individuals and entire communities, JCI designed the MY World Forum. It was created to not only gather survey data, but also engage young people in the post 2015 development discussion. The forum and its accompanying resources facilitated dialogue, shared experiences and encouraged the exchange of ideas about the challenges the world faces and our ability to create solutions.

Through partnership with the UN Millennium Campaign, engaging in platforms to share your voice, and facilitating forums to engage communities, JCI members will ensure young people take responsibility for the global development that will occur post 2015. Plan and Launch a MY World Forum Today Follow the instructions below to start the post 2015 development discussion and related actions in your community. 1. Join the World We Want Platform: Explore the World We Want website and then SIGN UP by sharing your email address or by signing in with your

Facebook or Twitter account. Once you have joined, create your World We Want Profile. You can then search the site to discover something you are passionate about and make your voice heard in building a global agenda for sustainable development. Follow thematic consultations from http://www.worldwewant2015.org/ So far, the UN Country teams are supporting 88 countries to convene national consultations on the post 2015 development agenda. These are forums to exchange ideas for a shared vision of "The World We Want", in an open process tailored to country contexts. The national consultations are organized by UN Country Teams, under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator, and are working with a wide range of stakeholders including governments, civil society, the private sector, media, universities and think tanks. 2. Take the MY World global survey: Take the survey today. Choose six of the 16 issues provided that are most important for you and your family. Vote from

JCI Partner link: http://www.myworld2015.org/?partner=jci for the changes that would make the most difference to your world! 2013 JCI UN Affairs Commissioners for Europe translated MY World Survey and supporting documents into German and Turkish with the support of the JCI Head Quarter Team. Translating the UN MDG training, MY World Survey and the supporting documents attracted the attention of members and JCI HQ contacted UN Post-2015 team suggesting JCI action in translating MY World Survey into different languages. UN MY World team kindly accepted this. German and Turkish MY World toolkit have been shared with the UN and from now on JCI organizations/ individuals has the liberty to translate the documents and share them with JCI HQ and with the UN MY World team.

3. Coordinate a MY World Forum in your Community: Visit the JCI Library to access the My World Forum Toolkit. Inside you will find the “MY World Forum

Facilitator’s Guide” to help plan and prepare a forum. Resources also include a PowerPoint presentation with accompanying speaker notes that you can use during the forum, along with instructions for facilitating the forum activities and discussions. Finally don’t forget the reporting form, sent to post2015@jci.cc. This will share the results and impact you created and inspire other young people to contribute their voice.

The MDGs are making a real difference in people’s lives and with strong leadership and accountability, this progress can be expanded in most of the world’s countries by the target date of 2015. After 2015, efforts to achieve a world of prosperity, equity, freedom, dignity and peace will contiue unabated. The UN is working with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum generated by the MDGs and carry on with an ambitious post-2015 development agenda. We wish you all a very productive and inspirational 2014!

We would like to thank you for your cooperation through 2013! As JCI UN Affairs Commissioners we have started some "first time ever

activities" like the MY World and Post 2015 Forum, European JCI and the UN Newsletter, JCI Global Partnership Summit social media trailers, the "JCI and UN, Natural Allies Training" and the JCI and UN Facebook site.

We would like to thank you all for your dedication and the inspiring projects on the field of UN MDGs, Global Compact, the MY World survey

and the community actions.

Especially we like to thank JCI Monaco, Germany and Turkey for their "daring to act" and hosting the "JCI and UN, Natural Allies" training and UN Forums during the European Conference and their National Conventions!

We have seen a lot of grass root level action across Europe. The National Organizations in Europe definitely know how to make impact on

local and national level! We like to suggest to the incoming 2014 National Presidents to proceed on this path, also more and more share these experiences via the project gallery on jci.cc especially during the JCI Impact Months. In this way other organizations across the world can learn

from the European experiences. As well we would like to recommend, in line with the JCI Global Partnership Summit resolution to organize UN Forums across Europe and to engage your members and partners in the "world we want campaign" to let (y)our voices be heard!
