New from Renault in brief…

Renault takes the wraps off Captur, its new urban crossover By combining form and function, Renault Captur brings motorists the best of the MPV, SUV and

hatchback worlds. It stands out as another example of Renault’s determination to bring

automotive innovation to the widest audience possible. Renault Captur brings affordable new

ideas to the segment. The clever solutions designed to make everyday life easier include a

sliding rear bench seat, a multi-position boot floor and Media Nav or Renault R-Link multimedia

systems, not mention its Easy Life drawer-type glove box, two-tone paint and zipped removable

seat covers.

True to its strategy which seeks to make innovation available to as many motorists as possible,

Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its

Renault R-Link multimedia system across its range. Now available for New Clio Hatchback, New Clio

Estate, New Clio R.S., ZOE, Captur and New Kangoo Express, it equips all the vehicles on display on

the brand’s stand in Geneva.

Renault’s new styling cues are becoming increasingly visible and are embodied by all the vehicles on

show in Geneva, including the new Renault Scénic line-up which has been joined by Scénic Xmod, a

crossover version of the benchmark MPV. With its adventurer look and outstanding dynamics, it is the

perfect vehicle for escaping the crowds.

Renault has been a passionate supporter of motorsport for 115 years. As an engine supplier to four F1

teams and with 11 Constructors’ world titles to its name, Renault has carried over the technological

excellence it has acquired on the race track to the development of its Energy engines. This range has

been extended with the addition of the brand new Energy TCe 130 petrol engine which will go on

sale in April under the bonnet of New Mégane, New Scénic and New Grand Scénic.

The unveiling of New Clio GT 120 EDC sees Renault further fuel the passion generated by its R.S. and

GT range of versatile performance cars.

Thanks to the combination of its Energy range of engines and its electric vehicle programme which

together spearhead the brand’s environmental drive, Renault is on target to go below the emissions

threshold of 120g CO2/km. Following the launch of four electric vehicles over a period of two years,

Renault, leader which has been Europe’s number one van manufacturer since 1998, takes the wraps

off New Kangoo Z.E. The precursor of the brand’s Z.E. range is also Europe’s best-selling compact

electric van and the latest version forms part of the Kangoo line-up’s renewal that was announced at

the end of January.

CAPTUR, THE URBAN CROSSOVER WITH RENAULT STYLE

Elegant and practical

“The genes of Renault Captur contain all the ideas of the concept car – the concept car which it was my pleasure to

present as the expression of the ‘Explore’ theme in Renault's life-cycle design strategy. As the brand’s first urban

crossover, Captur combines all the advantages of the MPV, SUV and family hatchback. Its balanced, fluid lines impart

a friendly muscular energy to its bodywork, while its expressive style and everyday practicality provide an open

invitation to discover the world – either two-up, or with the whole family aboard.” Laurens van den Acker (Senior

Vice President, Corporate Design, Renault)

Page 5: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

5

Designed for love at first sight – and real-world practicality

Renault Captur is an urban crossover with an

unpretentious look. Thanks to its compact footprint

(4.12m x 1.77m x 1.57m) and large 16- or 17-inch

wheels, it proclaims its sporty vocation and lust for

adventure, while its substantial ground clearance

(200 mm) raises it to the level of a number of

crossovers and 4x4s from the next segment up.

Thanks to its dynamic stance, Renault Captur

comes across as more imposing than its actual

dimensions would suggest.

Renault Captur's fluid, balanced forms express an assertive personality. The forward position of its steeply-raked

windscreen emphasises the design's dynamic appeal, and the two-part horizontal rear lights permit a wide tailgate

while steering clear of a boxy look. The sense of quality is also evident in the fit of the wheels, with a minimal gap

between the tyres and the bodywork. Meanwhile, modern, original and practical styling details confirm that Renault

Captur has above all been designed to be extremely user friendly. For example, the sill protection mouldings guard

against urban and rural scrapes, and the base of each door is shaped to prevent shoes and clothing getting dirty

when climbing aboard.

Inside, the impression of space is borne out by the

cabin’s generous dimensions. Echoing the exterior,

Renault Captur’s interior is bright, colourful, harmonious

and customisable. A choice of light or dark trims is

available for the first two equipment levels, and the mesh

map pockets on the front seat backs – as fitted to the

concept car of the same name – are both sophisticated

and useful. The patterns selected for the upholstery

permit a wide range of colour combinations and

contrasts.

Page 6: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

6

Easy to personalise so that everyone can shape it to their individual lifestyle and desires With Renault Captur, it is possible to specify:

two-tone paintwork to provide a contrast between the roof and pillars and the rest of the body,

the colour of the wheels,

decor graphics for the bonnet, roof or tailgate, as well as a range of themed decor packs to embellish the steering

wheel and upholstery and co-ordinate them with the exterior graphics,

a light or black interior trim,

one of several interior decor colours: grey, ivory, chrome, orange, blue or green for the air vent, centre console

and loudspeaker surrounds, as well as for the drawer-type Easy Life glove box. These colours are echoed by the

upholstery,

a choice of four non-removable upholsteries for the first two equipment levels, plus a range of eight Zip Collection

zipped seat covers as options for the second equipment and standard for the third equipment level.

Attractively priced equipment packs will help customers configure their own personalised vehicle with co-

ordinated interior and exterior.

Renault turns the crossover into a car for everyday use

“Thanks to readily affordable innovations that are in tune with the times, Renault has always designed cars that are

easy to live with. As a genuine crossover, designed for the real world, Renault Captur proves the point one more

time.” Benoît Bochard (A and B Segment Programme Director) Renault Captur's clever features make everyday life easier Renault Captur introduces two seldom seen, but valued, innovations:

patented Zip Collection removable seat covers (depending on

version), plus a large Easy Life drawer in place of the familiar glove

box. On a more general level, Renault Captur brings innovative

practical and comfort features to a broader public in the B segment.

Page 7: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

7

Practical: Easy Life: the first glove box that can be used by the driver from the driving seat. Capable of holding 11 litres, the

Easy Life drawer is a more attractive and practical solution than the traditional glove box, since it is so easy to see

inside and reach its contents.

The removable, multi-position boot floor is also reversible, with carpeting on one side and plastic on the other.

The uncluttered forms of the large boot enable it to hold from 377 to 455 litres.

A removable 1.6-litre bin is located between the front seats.

A large lidded stowage area is set in the top of the dashboard.

The front door bins can accommodate 1.5-litre drinks bottles.

Two handy stowage areas are located underneath the boot mat either side of the tyre inflation kit.

The rear bench seat slides 160mm of fore/aft travel.

Easy to maintain: The Zip Collection seat covers are easy to unzip, for cleaning by hand or in a washing machine. There is no need

to labour awkwardly inside the car to get rid of stains; the interior can now be as good as new when you come to

re-sell.

The plastic side of the reversible multi-position boot floor can simply be sponged clean while the boot walls and

front seat shrouding will cope easily with dirty loads.

Thoughtful and convenient: Keyless entry and starting is standard across the range, while a hands-free key card is available for the second

equipment level and upwards,

the height-adjustable driver's seat has 70mm of travel so that drivers of all sizes can find a comfortable driving

position,

motorway mode indicators: a single flick produces three flashes,

hill Start Assist across the range,

rear parking sensors (audible signal) and reversing camera as part of MEDIA NAV or R-Link packs,

cornering lights: automatic activation of the appropriate fog light to light up the inside of a corner and provide the

driver with a wider field of view,

welcome lighting and indirect ambient lighting above the Easy Life drawer, from the second equipment level

upwards,

Renault Captur – making the on-board experience even more luxurious

Thanks to their generous complement of standard equipment, all versions of Renault Captur boast an equipment

specification worthy of larger classes:

Sliding rear bench seat with 160mm of fore/aft

travel,

capacious Easy Life drawer,

reversible, multi-position boot floor,

key card, variable-rate power steering,

heated, electrically adjustable door mirrors,

electric windows front and rear,

height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel ,

hill Start Assist (HBA),

ABS, emergency brake assist and ESC,

bluetooth® audio and telephone connectivity,

USB port and jack socket,

speed limiter with cruise control,

motorway mode indicators,

elliptical head light units,

low rolling resistance tyres,

turbocharged engines etc.

Renault Captur can be specified with an EDC dual clutch gearbox mated to the TCe 120 engine, to combine the

comfort of automatic transmission with the fuel economy of a manual.

To cement its family-wide appeal, Renault Captur is equipped with the very best in multimedia solutions thanks to a

choice between the Renault R-Link or Media Nav systems, as well as high-quality audio equipment. All versions of

Renault Captur feature four large-diameter (165mm) loudspeakers as standard or, when R-Link is specified, four

woofers and two tweeters. All the audio systems available for Renault Captur come with steering wheel-mounted

fingertip remote control, plus USB and jack sockets, mounted either on the fascia itself or elsewhere on the console.

The Bluetooth ® technology of these systems allows hands-free telephone operation and enjoyment of music stored

on portable devices with no need for trailing cables. The R-Plug&Radio systems are equipped with an MP3-

compatible CD player.

9

Renault Captur: the most fuel-efficient urban crossover in its class

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions among the segment’s very best Thanks to its choice of Energy engines, Renault Captur aims to be the category leader with regard to low fuel

consumption and CO2 emissions, yet still be fun to drive.

Petrol engines

Energy TCe 90: 113g of CO2/km1 (4.9

litres/100km1)

TCe 120 EDC: 125g of CO2/km1 (5.4

litres/100km1)

Diesel engines

Energy dCi 90: 95g of CO2/km1 (3.7 litres/100km1)

dCi 90 EDC2 target: 104g of CO2/km3 (4.1

litres/100km3). Available at a later date.

A crossover that weighs as little as a hatchback

To further reduce fuel consumption, Renault Captur benefits from the latest research into weight saving,

aerodynamics and tyres. Its weight is the same as that of Clio III, even though it has a larger footprint and extra

comfort and safety equipment. Whenever the cooling requirement reduces, powered flaps behind the bumper

automatically close off the air intakes, for the benefit of overall aerodynamic efficiency (depending on version and

market). Meanwhile, ducting inside the engine compartment channels the flow of air, again improving aerodynamic

performance. Last but not least, ultra-low rolling resistance tyres reduce fuel consumption by up to three per cent. Ahead of the game in the use of recycled materials

Recycled materials account for 16 per cent (by weight) of the plastics used in the manufacture of Renault Captur. This

is a first for Renault and represents one of the best scores in the automobile industry.

Meticulously designed and built to last Built on the proven B platform Bolstered by its expertise in vehicle architecture, Renault has always led the way when it comes to developing bold

new concepts. Compact on the outside, yet spacious and versatile inside, Renault Captur once again breaks down

barriers between the established segments. It is built around the proven B platform which is widely acclaimed for its

comfort, roominess, handling and reliability. Renault Captur uses the same drivetrain as New Clio, with wider tracks

and a longer wheelbase.

Manufacturing expertise at the Valladolid plant The Valladolid plant in Spain has risen to the manufacturing challenges presented by Captur, notably that of bringing

two-tone paintwork to a wider audience. It is expected there will be a high take-up rate for this finish, so the plant has

established a process and developed solutions for fast and effective masking.

Reassuring: all models equipped with Hill Start Assist and Roll Movement Intervention

Renault Captur reaches the very highest standards in terms of active and passive safety:

Adult safety: reinforced structure, high-performance frontal airbags, head/thorax lateral airbags, impact detection

pressure sensors, front seat belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, anti-whiplash head restraints, a load

limiter function for the outer rear seats and an anti-submarining design for the front seats.

Child safety: Isofix child seat anchorage for front passenger seat and outer rear seats, with three seatbelt points

and three type approved seat belt positions for child seats.

Pedestrian safety: designed to minimise pedestrian impact injuries, particularly to the legs, hips and head.

The dynamics of Renault Captur fully reflect the brand’s expertise and high standards. Its road holding inspires

confidence, while its responsive handling and ride comfort figure among the very best in its class.

To ensure driver confidence, all versions of Renault Captur will be equipped with:

ESC with Roll Movement Intervention. This intervenes in extreme situations, if the body roll angle threatens to

become excessive. It makes use of the ESC’s control unit to brake individual wheels. Hill Start Assist prevents the vehicle from rolling back when the driver releases the foot brake by temporarily

holding the vehicle stationary. ABS and emergency brake assist, plus latest-generation ESC traction control complete with seven sensors.

RENAULT SCÉNIC XMOD, NEWCOMER TO THE SCÉNIC LINE

Scénic Xmod, the market’s leading MPV… in crossover mode

An exercise in fluid lines and assertive looks, Scénic Xmod features crossover styling in an expression of Renault’s new design identity. Scénic Xmod states its difference with style, yet retains the genetic make-up of Renault Scénic – the benchmark European MPV since 1996.

Outdoor cues an invitation to travel Sporty and elegant, Scénic Xmod successfully combines the outdoor cues of a crossover with the refined world of an

MPV. The car features an expressive crossover-inspired design with raised ground clearance, special front and rear

bumpers, sill guards and chrome-finish roof bars (depending on equipment level).

An interior which exudes driving enjoyment The cabin of Scénic Xmod has been restyled with a

fixed centre console and cockpit-like driving position.

The console houses the rotary control for the Extended

Grip system, as well as the multi-directional joystick

control for the multimedia system Renault R-Link

(available soon after launch). Both fall within easy reach.

Page 12: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

12

The dashboard features a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) digital display and the

connected touch screen multimedia system Renault R-Link providing a

simple and clear overview of all the information required while on the move.

Renault R-Link will also be available later on New Scénic and Grand

Scénic.

The Privilège version (or Bose® version, depending on market) of Scénic Xmod includes a flat-bottomed steering

wheel with a sporty and eye-catching design, as well as aluminium-capped pedals and gear lever knob, plus new

gloss anodised dark charcoal interior details. Visible stitching and special new upholstery make the seats particularly

inviting.

Scénic’s DNA: cabin space and travelling comfort Scénic Xmod retains the key features that have made Scénic the benchmark in the compact MPV segment, i.e. cabin

space and a modular seat layout for optimum comfort. Its 555-litre boot is one of the biggest in its class, while no less

than 71 litres of additional stowage space are cleverly spread around the cabin. Scénic Xmod offers simple, effective

and fast modularity: the seats are independent, folding and removable to provide a host of seating configurations.

Get away from it all, while remaining in complete control Scénic Xmod is the first vehicle in the Renault range to feature the new Extended Grip system.

This advanced traction control system enables the vehicle to grip the road

confidently in difficult driving conditions (snow, mud, sand, etc.). The rotary

control located on the centre console allows the driver to select one of three

modes: ‘Road’, ‘Loose Ground’ or ‘Expert’.

The default ‘Road’ mode suits all hard road surfaces (dry, wet or icy) and

offers conventional traction control settings. It automatically reconnects at

speeds of more than 40kph after another mode has been selected.

Page 13: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

13

In the ‘Loose Ground’ mode, the Extended Grip system takes over from the driver to manage the driven wheels. This

mode automatically modifies engine torque and brake force distribution to permit more wheel spin at the front. This

allows the M+S (Mud and Snow) tyres to clear surface mud or sand more efficiently for even better grip and traction.

In ‘Expert’ mode, Extended Grip manages the braking system, but leaves the driver in full control of the engine torque

to adjust the car’s acceleration.

The Extended Grip system must be associated with special-compound Mud and Snow tyres to optimise the

clearance of mud, sand or slush.

A facelift for New Scénic and New Grand Scénic

Renault Scénic and Grand Scénic have been restyled to take on Renault’s new design identity. Europe’s best-selling MPV now even more expressive New Scénic and Grand Scénic feature Renault’s new front-end styling with a more assertive grille thanks to the bigger

Renault logo which is set against a gloss black background. The materials used produce a more expressive, status-

enhancing feel that adds character and provides a more dynamic stance.

Energy power boost for the Scénic line Like Scénic Xmod, New Scénic and Grand Scénic can be ordered with one of the three new Energy powertrains

which were renewed between May 2011 and May 2012. The list includes the brand-new petrol Energy TCe 130.

Page 14: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

14

The latest Energy engines all share the same guiding principle, i.e. significantly reduced fuel consumption, CO2

emissions and running costs, plus maximum driving enjoyment and high quality.

A showcase of Renault’s powertrain excellence, the Energy TCe 130 is the latest addition to Renault’s petrol engine

range which also includes the recent Energy TCe 115. This particularly smooth yet responsive powerplant combines

genuine driving enjoyment and sprightly performance, even at low revs. Discreet and quiet-running, it features the

ultra-fast Stop&Start system (see chapter on Energy powertrains). Renault’s Energy technology delivers a 15 per cent

fuel consumption saving (more than 1 litre/100km) over the previous TCe 130 unit.

Trademark Mégane quality Reliability is Renault’s constant focus, from the design phase to the manufactured product. New Scénic and Grand

Scénic are made in Douai, France.

Douai: renowned for quality Production of the Mégane 1 Hatchback started in 1995 at the Douai factory, followed one year later by Mégane Classic and Scénic. Since Scénic’s release in 1996, 4,300,000 units have been produced at the plant. Renault has built up its expertise on the strength of the rigour and professionalism of all the plant’s employees.

Renault has also invested €420 million in adapting and upgrading the Douai factory, which aims to become the production site for Renault’s premium models. To achieve this goal, the plant has implemented a quality policy involving each and every staff member. Dubbed the ‘Douai certified quality’ plan, it is based on four cornerstones: a thorough understanding of quality standards and practices, everyday quality management, the highest level of skills, a stronger focus on perceived quality.

Depending on version, another mark of the quality of Scénic Xmod, New Scénic and New Grand Scénic is the Bose®

Energy Efficient Series audio system which features tailor-engineered sound and class-leading acoustic performance.

The system includes eight speakers, a digital amplifier and a bass enclosure under the front passenger seat.

Renault and BOSE®, a partnership geared to quality sound Acclaimed the world over for its quality, performance and taste for innovation, Bose designs custom-engineered audio systems in association with Renault. These systems match the acoustic properties of each model's cabin to deliver precise, realistic sound reproduction which is close to that of a live performance.

Renault’s 11 F1 world titles beneficial to its road cars

“Our involvement in F1 over a period spanning 35 years has helped us gain real expertise in the realms of downsizing,

friction reduction and cooling efficiency, all of which help us to improve the energy efficiency of our production

vehicles without detracting from driving enjoyment. In 2013, the cars of four F1 teams will be powered by our engines,

which is an indication of our excellence on the race track. At the same time, the fact that we will supply mass-

produced engines to Nissan and Daimler is similar evidence of our savoir-faire in the world of road cars.” Carlos Tavares (Chief Operating Officer, Renault)

Renault’s record in F1: 11 world titles in 35 years As winner of the Formula 1 Constructors’ world crown for a third straight season1 in 2012 with Red Bull Racing and

Sebastian Vettel, Renault is the only volume manufacturer to have been successful in beating the premium brands

and specialist names in motor racing’s premier category. And this isn’t a new phenomenon. Renault powerplants

boast an unrivalled record of some 500 Grand Prix starts, while the company’s excellence as an engine maker is

illustrated by the 151 race wins, 200 pole positions, 11 Constructors’ world titles and 10 Drivers’ titles it has claimed

over a period of 35 years. This success rate is the fruit of the skills and quality work that have positioned Renault as

an expert in the realm of racing engines.

1 As an engine supplier and as an independent team

28

Over the past 30 years, the majority of F1’s world champions have raced with Renault power, from Mansell, Hill and

Senna, to Prost, Schumacher, Alonso and Vettel. This is no coincidence, since a long list of F1 stars – including

Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen – successfully rose to the top thanks to Renault Sport’s feeder

formulae, driving cars like the Formula Renault 2.0 and the Formula Renault 3.5. Of the 24 drivers on the grid in 2012,

14 of them – i.e. almost 60 per cent –previously raced in a Renault single-seater race car, including Romain Grosjean,

Charles Pic, Pastor Maldonado and Vitaly Petrov, plus Charles Pic, Jean-Eric Vergne, Kamui Kobayashi, Paul Di

Resta and Felipe Massa who competed with rival teams.

Performance, traction, efficiency and consistency: the keys to the success of Renault engines Renault’s success on the race track speaks volumes for the performance, energy efficiency and consistency of its

powerplants and serves as an enviable showcase for the firm’s engine-making savoir-faire.

Performance: Renault’s engines stand out through their traction and the ease with which they adapt to the

different chassis. The R.S. 27 engine powers one car in three in Formula 1.

Efficiency: energy efficiency is one of the key strengths of Renault’s engines, since making maximum use of

every drop of fuel makes for a lighter and therefore faster car.

Page 29: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

29

Consistency: constant honing of the mechanical components employed by Renault’s race engines ensures

consistent performance, whatever the conditions.

2014 FIA regulations: speeding up the carry-over of technology from F1 to road cars The new FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile)

regulations which are due to come into effect in 2014 will

take Formula 1 into a new era. Indeed, Formula 1 is about

to implement one of the farthest-reaching technological

shifts in its history. The fuel consumption of the cars is

poised to come down by 30 per cent with no loss of

performance, and the objective is to strengthen the ties

that exist between F1’s research and development

programmes, the concerns of motorists and the issues

facing the economy and environment. Energy efficiency

will consequently be as crucial in F1 as it is for road

vehicles.

This represents a fresh challenge for Renault Sport F1’s

engine specialists who are working on the development of

a V6 1,600cc turbocharged engine with direct fuel-

injection and deceleration energy recovery. This

significantly downsized internal combustion engine will be

coupled with a twin energy recovery system which will

feed two electric motors, and the sport now effectively

talks in terms of ‘power units’.

This challenge fits perfectly with Renault’s corporate powertrain strategy which focuses on:

An unprecedented commitment to electric motors.

Ongoing improvements to the efficiency of its internal combustion engines to achieve spectacular gains in fuel

consumption and CO2 emissions.

The change will see Renault do everything in its power to defend its status as the number one name for technology on

the race track, and this will ultimately benefit its road vehicles. The creativity and taste for innovation of its teams of

experts are important allies in its determination to rise successfully to this new challenge.

30

PASSIONATE AND RESPONSIBLE At Renault, innovation is first and foremost about designing and manufacturing high-technology products at affordable prices and which provide genuine value to the customer. In keeping with this philosophy, the energy efficiency of the brand’s Energy series engines reduces fuel bills for customers and cuts the environmental footprint of its vehicles. Meanwhile, within the space of just two years Renault has launched a range of four electric vehicles with affordable price tags and with zero emissions during their use on the road. Thanks to the combination of its Energy engine range and electric vehicle programme, Renault's CO2 is poised to fall below the 120g/km threshold by the end of 2013.

The Energy range of engines expands with the new Energy TCe 130

Continuing the renewal of its range of downsized engines, Renault has announced its ninth Energy engine. Designated Energy TCe 130, this petrol new engine is a more powerful derivative of the Renault Energy TCe 115 and takes over from the former 1.4-litre TCe 130. It is due to go on sale in April under the bonnet of New Mégane, New Scénic and New Grand Scénic.

With a power output of 130hp at 5,000rpm and peak torque

of 205Nm at as low as 2,000rpm, this 1.2-litre turbo petrol

engine is equipped with latest-generation direct injection and

offers the performance of a normally-aspirated two-litre

powerplant, making it ideal for use on major roads. Thanks

to the Energy technologies it employs, some of which are

derived from Renault’s F1 experience, its fuel consumption

represents a saving of between 15 and 20 per cent –

depending on models - compared with the engine it replaces,

which equates to more than one litre saved for every 100km

covered.

This responsive and extremely smooth new engine picks up eagerly from low revs, making it a pleasure to drive. At

the same time, it is easy to forget thanks to its silent operation and unobtrusive ultra-rapid Stop&Start system.

Page 31: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

31

Renault Energy TCe 130: a 1.2 turbo petrol engine tailored for the open road The Renault Energy TCe 130 is a development of the Energy TCe

115. Exploiting the same technical package, this 130-horsepower

version places the emphasis on dynamic performance to provide

still greater refinement and driving pleasure.

The 1,198cc aluminium block delivers enhanced performance

over the TCe 115, with peak power of 130hp (an increase of

15hp) and maximum torque of 205Nm (up 15Nm). Ninety per cent

of this torque is available from 1,500rpm, and the full amount is

available between 2,000 and 3,000rpm which explains its

outstanding flexibility, while its crisp response from low revs

ensures a smart getaway from rest. This torque and performance

make the Renault Energy TCe 130 a worthy touring car engine

and particularly suited to towing a trailer or caravan, driving in

mountainous regions which call for powerful acceleration.

Fuel savings of more than 1 litre per 100 km, and CO2 reduced by up to 20 per cent In addition to standing out as the market’s highest-performing 1.2 litre petrol engine, the Renault Energy TCe 130 also

shines when it comes to making savings at the pump thanks to a reduction in fuel consumption of 20 per cent1

compared with the TCe 130. The Energy TCe 130 version of New Scénic Xmod returns combined-cycle fuel

consumption of just 6.2 litres/100km1, while that of New Mégane Hatchback with the same engine is 5.4 litres/100km1,

an improvement of more than one litre for every 100km travelled. That equates to CO2 emissions of only 124g/km for

New Mégane Hatchback (down 29g/km) and 140g/km1 in the case of Scénic Xmod. 1 Homologated fuel consumption and emission values in accordance with appropriate legislation

Combined cycle fuel consumption (litres/100km)

32

Running costs have consequently been reduced significantly,

while the lower CO2 emissions allow customers in some

countries to benefit from state subsidies or tax incentives. At

the same time, servicing has been facilitated by an oil-change

interval of 30,000km (with ecological oil filter) and lifetime

timing chain.

Made for the open road, this 1.2 litre petrol turbo engine

stands comparison with diesel power for annual distances

travelled of up to 25,000km or 30,000km (based on French

statistics).

Cushioned acoustics

The Energy TCe 130 benefited from a particularly thorough acoustic refinement process, the result being a smooth,

muted sound profile, even at high engine speeds.

Building on the technical features of the Energy TCe 115: Features on the Energy TCe 130 petrol engine like direct fuel-

injection, turbocharging, an integrated turbo manifold and

variable valve timing combine to deliver maximum torque at

low revs and ensure the availability of torque across a broad

effective rpm range. Fuel is injected directly into the

combustion chamber for optimum efficiency as a function of the

running conditions, the advantage for the customer being

valuable fuel savings and reduced CO2 emissions.

Stop&Start with ultra-rapid restart Sensors in the system detect the precise position of each piston and inject fuel into the cylinder that is best placed to

restart the engine instantaneously. The ‘free’ energy recovered and stored under braking is used to charge the battery

and restart the engine.

Page 33: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

33

Uprated dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption The principal focus of Renault's specialist engineers was to find the optimal balance between performance and fuel consumption, power and silence in order to produce an engine that would be as balanced as possible across the whole rev range. Performance gains were obtained by revising the inlet system and turbo manifold to achieve a higher boost pressure for extra torque at low revs, in addition to more power. In parallel, the compression ratio was reduced to keep fuel consumption in check, including during motorway use. Furthermore, gear ratios were shortened for enhanced acceleration response.

The Renault Energy range of engines: Powertrain performance which benefits from Renault’s F1 engineering research: with 35 years’

experience in F1 and 11 Constructors world titles to its name, Renault is able to pass on technologies developed for the race track to its customers.

Technology: thanks to new-generation downsizing, Renault’s Energy range of engines boasts a long list

of technical features never previously seen in this capacity class. All the engines are equipped with Stop&Start system and braking/deceleration energy recovery. Other technologies employed include thermal management, variable displacement oil pumps, low-pressure EGR (diesel engines), turbocharging (three- and four-cylinder petrol engines), diamond-like coating (DLC) for the cam followers and graphite-coated piston skirts (as used in F1).

A philosophy: the achievement of significant fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and running cost

savings, while at the same time continuing to deliver driving enjoyment, with the accent on quality from every level.

Acoustic refinement: Energy engines enjoy a subtle, muted sound profile. Noise has been cut by up to

50 per cent in comparison with the engines they replace.

New Kangoo Z.E., a renewed version of the Z.E. range’s first model

Renault, Europe’s number one van manufacturer since 1998, has profited from the 2013 Geneva Motor Show to reveal New Kangoo Z.E., the first model to appear in the brand’s Z.E. range and Europe’s best-selling small electric van. Its renewal forms part of the Kangoo range’s overhaul that was announced at the end of January. New Kangoo Z.E.’s lines are now even easier to distinguish from those of its internal combustion-engined counterpart. It has also been made more modern, thanks notably the introduction of the connected Renault R-Link multimedia system. The electric version continues to be available in a choice of two lengths and three configurations for up to five occupants. It naturally carries over all the user-friendly features of its predecessor and delivers the level of driving comfort associated with electric vehicles.

New Kangoo Z.E. reasserts its electric vehicle identity

Like the internal combustion-engined New Kangoo, the Z.E. version features a new front end which embodies

Renault’s latest styling signature. The logo is bigger and contrasts boldly with the black background of the grille, while

redesigned head lights ensure a more expressive, hi-tech gaze. The difference between the electric and internal

combustion-engined versions of Renault’s small van has been accentuated, too. Indeed, New Kangoo Z.E.’s electric

vehicle breeding is highlighted by the blue-tinted logo and blue rear light trims, as well as by the incorporation of black

head light masks.

The battery charger socket is now concealed behind the Renault logo at the front of New Kangoo Z.E. By plugging in

the cable provided with the vehicle, owners can benefit from a complete charge in between six and nine hours using a

Wall Box at their home or at a roadside charging station.

Page 35: 2013 INTERNATIONAL GENEVA MOTOR SHOW - Renault · 3/5/2013  · Renault has stolen a lead in the realm of in-car connectivity with the widespread availability of its Renault R-Link

35

Another specific feature of the electric version of New Kangoo is its ‘Z.E. Voice’ function which emits a sound to warn

pedestrians of the vehicle’s approach, thereby contributing to a more relaxed driving experience in built-up areas. This

system is activated at speeds of between 1 and 30kph, but switches off when the vehicle is at a standstill.

Now featuring the Renault R-Link multimedia system

There have been other significant evolutions to the latest-phase Kangoo Z.E. inside the cabin, too, including a new,

more modern, quality centre console, while the connected Renault R-Link multimedia system is now also available.

Renault R-Link provides all the multimedia functions (navigation, radio, Bluetooth® telephony, connectivity with

portable devices, etc.) in a single system which comes complete with a seven-inch touch screen display.

Renault R-Link also includes tools designed to minimise the consumption of energy and running costs. The Driving

eco² function, for example, contributes to more economical motoring by analysing individual driving styles and

providing personalised tips. The TomTom® Z.E. LIVE navigation system can be asked to suggest the most energy-

efficient routes. With ‘My Z.E. inter@ctive’, drivers can use their computer or smartphone to programme the charging

of New Kangoo Z.E. remotely in order to benefit from off-peak electricity rates (for further information, see ‘Renault R-

Link’ chapter).

These engines are equipped with Stop&Start and deceleration energy recovery. For even greater control of running costs, New Kangoo is equipped as standard with a gear shift indicator and an eco-mode which enables fuel consumption to be reduced by up to 10 per cent at the push of a button.

The renewal of the Kangoo range sees the line-up joined by a new version with three front seats. This solution will be available irrespective of the chosen length (except for New Kangoo Z.E., Maxi Crew Cab and five-seat Maxi version). The New Kangoo range now totals 14 variants in order to be sure of meeting the demands of the most exacting business customers.

New Kangoo: an even greater impression of quality New Renault Kangoo uses the same running gear as Scénic which has long been acclaimed for its reliability and

strength. Careful attention has also been paid to ensuring an even higher degree of perceived quality for New Renault

Kangoo. This work has notably focused on the quality of the welds, door panel crimping and precision of the

application of body sealants which are now much more discreet.

Perceived quality stepped up within the framework of the partnership with Daimler

On April 7, 2010, having worked in association with Opel/Vauxhall and Nissan in the production of vans for many

years, Renault signed a new partnership deal covering its small van programme with the German group Daimler AG. This collaboration resulted in the creation of working groups led by engineers from both companies to monitor the

production of New Renault Kangoo and the Mercedes Citan at Renault’s Maubeuge plant in France. These working

groups generated valuable exchanges and saw both parties challenge the other’s processes to their mutual

advantage, thereby making proactive contributions to the enhanced perceived quality seen on New Kangoo. This

progress will also be beneficial to all the models that make up Renault’s LCV range.

Flashback to the original Kangoo Z.E., pioneer and Europe’s number one small electric van

It was on October 28, 2011, that the very first Kangoo Z.E.s went on sale at Renault dealerships. The launch of the

zero-emission small van marked the official beginning of Renault’s electric vehicle offensive. It was the first of the four

models which now make up the brand’s electric vehicle range, namely Kangoo Z.E. and Fluence Z.E., plus Twizy and

ZOE which can only be ordered with electric motors. The van was widely acclaimed by the media and soon won a

long list of awards, including the highly-coveted International Van of the Year 2012 prize, a first for an electric vehicle.

The jury notably hailed the newcomer’s carrying capacity and driving enjoyment.

In October 2011, Kangoo Z.E. won a tender to supply more than 15,000 vehicles over a period of four years to 19

major businesses and administrative bodies in France.

Kangoo Z.E. is also Europe’s best-selling electric van, with registrations totalling almost 7,000 vehicles, including

approximately 4,000 in France. Of these, 1,800 were ordered by La Poste. These vehicles face a tough working life

since they cover an average daily distance of 50km for the delivery of mail, involving up to 300 stops per day with the

driver’s door frequently open and the heater on full in cold weather, which is hardly ideal for optimising range. Yet

Kangoo Z.E. is proving highly satisfactory in its new role. “Those who drive these vehicles say they don’t want to go

back to an internal combustion engine,” notes one member of La Poste’s staff.

Christophe Cluzeau (baker/pastry chef, Bougarber, France) “I have been completely won over. I am even considering buying an electric vehicle as my personal car. […] On top of the financial savings and driving comfort EVs bring, it is time we modified our vision. We needn’t fear change. We should open our eyes and move on to a new era that simply calls for a healthier state of mind to be beneficial for the planet and ourselves.”

François Lhotte (Director of Sustainable Development, Moët Hennessy Champagne) “Our group is attentive to innovative production processes which are respectful of the products we market. Using electrical energy for short journeys is one such example. In July 2010, we acquired a second-hand electric Kangoo, which we tested in our vineyards near Epernay, France. The test was positive and we replaced it at the beginning of 2012 with a Kangoo Z.E. which proved even more dynamic. Driving it around town and in the vineyards is like having automatic transmission, while the lithium-ion technology means the battery charges very quickly, and at any time, so that pleases our head vigneron.”

Regis Emo (Campsite Director, Saint-Etienne de Villeréal, France) “The prime reasons for my purchase of two Kangoo Z.E.s were cost savings and their ecological benefits. We are a registered ‘glamping’ campsite, which is a new trend founded on a luxury experience that is in contact with nature, comfortable and respectful of the environment. For us, it is vital to be close to nature and protect it. Our customers appreciate the fact that we are able to bring them fresh pastries for breakfast without making any noise or polluting the air. It’s a real ‘plus’!”
