    AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

    2012 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

The Detroit Tigers made history in 2012, posting an 88-74 record to claim the American League Central Divisiontitle for the second consecutive season, marking the first time in franchise history that the club has won back-to-back division titles. It also marked the first time the Tigers made it to the post-season in consecutive seasons sinceback-to-back World Series berths in 1934 and 1935.

The division title was hard fought with the Tigers trailing by as many assix games at various points throughout the season. The club was threegames back on September 18, but posted an 11-5 record over the final 16games of the season to finish with a three-game lead over the ChicagoWhite Sox.

The post-season began with an American League Division Seriesmatchup against the Oakland Athletics. The Tigers won the first two gamesat Comerica Park behind brilliant pitching from both Justin Verlander andDoug Fister. The Athletics won the next two in Oakland, setting up a decisive Game Five matchup with Verlander on the mound for the Tigers.Verlander authored a signature performance in Game Five, limiting theAthletics to four hits and striking out 11 in a brilliant shutout that sent theTigers to the American League Championship Series for the second consecutive season.

The Tigers faced the New York Yankees in the American LeagueChampionship Series in a rematch of the 2011 American League DivisionSeries. This time the Tigers would take the series in a sweep, never trailingat any point during the four-game set. The sweep gave the Tigers a berthin the World Series for the 11th time in club history.

    AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

The Tigers matched up with the San Francisco Giants in the WorldSeries. The Giants won all four games of the series, completing thesweep as the Tigers struggled to generate any offense against SanFrancisco pitching.

Manager Jim Leyland was at the helm for the Tigers for the seventh consecutive season, guiding the team to the playoffs for thethird time in his career. He became just the second manager in franchise history to lead the team to the post-season on three occasions, joining Hughie Jennings, who guided the club to theWorld Series in three straight seasons from 1907-09. He also recorded his 600th victory with the Tigers during the season, becoming the third manager in franchise history to record 600 wins, joining Sparky Anderson and Hughie Jennings.

Miguel Cabrera was the driving force behind the Tigers offense, compilingone of the greatest seasons in major league history en route to winning theTriple Crown and the American League Most Valuable Player award. Cabrerabatted .330 with 44 home runs and 139 RBI to lead the league in all three categories. The batting title marked the second consecutive season Cabrerahas topped the American League in hitting, becoming the first Tigers player towin back-to-back batting titles since Ty Cobb did so in three consecutive seasons from 1917-19. In addition to leading the league in batting average, home runs and RBI, he also led the league with 377 total bases, 84 extra-basehits and a .606 slugging percentage, while he finished second with 109 runsscored and 205 hits and fourth with a .393 on-base percentage.

Cabrera was flanked in the Tigers offense by first baseman Prince Fielder, who batted .313 with 30 home runs and 108 RBI in his first season with theTigers. Fielder finished the season second in the American League with a.412 on-base percentage, while he finished fifth with 108 RBI, sixth with 85walks, tied for sixth with a .313 batting average, finished seventh with a .528slugging percentage, tied for ninth with 182 hits and finished 10th with 307total bases. He was exceptionally durable for the Tigers, playing in all 162games and extending his consecutive games played streak to 343 gamesdating back to the 2010 season, marking the longest active streak in themajor leagues.

Center fielder Austin Jackson provided the spark at the top of the Tigers lineup, establishing career highs with a .300 batting average, 16 home runsand 66 RBI. Jackson topped the American League with 10 triples, while hetied for fifth with 103 runs scored and tied for eighth with a .377 on-base percentage.

Justin Verlander was again the leader of the Tigers pitching staff, posting a 17-8 record, 2.64 ERA and 239strikeouts. He topped the American League with 238.1 innings pitched, 239 strikeouts and six complete games, while he finished second with a 2.64 ERA, .217 batting average against, 7.25 hits per nine innings and 3.98 strikeouts per walk, tied for third with 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings and tied for fourth with 17 wins. Verlandernearly won his second consecutive American League Cy Young Award for his efforts, finishing a close second toTampa Bay Rays lefthander David Price. Verlander continued his dominance in the post-season with a 3-1 record,2.22 ERA and 29 strikeouts in four starts.

Fellow starter Max Scherzer compiled the finest season of his career, posting a 16-7 record, 3.74 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 32 starts. He led theAmerican League with 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings, while he finished second with 231 strikeouts and tied for sixth with 16 wins.

Doug Fister was a key to the Tigers starting rotation, rebounding from twostints on the disabled list to post an 8-4 record and 2.67 ERA in 15 starts following the all-star break.

Much like Fister in 2011, Anibal Sanchez was a key acquisition that helpedpropel the Tigers into the post-season. Acquired by the Tigers from the MiamiMarlins prior to the trading deadline, Sanchez posted a 3-3 record, 2.15 ERAand 44 strikeouts over his final eight starts with the Tigers. He also posted a1.77 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 20.1 innings pitched during three starts in hisfirst career post-season action.

  • The Triple Crown is one of the most hallowed achievements in all of baseball. It embodies the combination ofskills that only the elite hitters in baseball history have possessed; the ability to hit for average, hit for power andmaintain consistent production over the course of an entire season. Miguel Cabrera is one of those elite hittersand in 2012 he etched his name into the record books by leading the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBI to become the first Triple Crown winner in baseball since 1967.

His Triple Crown marked the 14th time since 1900 a player has accomplished the feat and Cabrera is the 12thplayer to win the Triple Crown during that time. The previous 11 players to win the Triple Crown since 1900 haveall been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, four finished their career with more than 500 home runsand three finished with more than 3,000 hits. The list of Tigers players to accomplish the feat is even shorter asCabrera is just the second player in franchise history to win the Triple Crown, joining Ty Cobb, who did so in 1909.

The accolades continued for Cabrera following the completion of his Triple Crown quest. He virtually swept theawards circuit, including being named the American League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball WritersAssociation of America. He became the first Tigers position player to win the Most Valuable Player since HankGreenberg did so in 1940. Cabrera is the fourth position player in franchise history to win the award, joiningGreenberg, Charlie Gehringer and Mickey Cochrane. Cabrera joined Justin Verlander, who won the award in 2011, to mark the first time the Tigers have featured Most Valuable Player winners in consecutive seasons since HalNewhouser won the award in both 1944 and 1945.

In addition to his Most Valuable Player honor, Cabrera also earned 2012 Player of the Year and AmericanLeague Outstanding Player in voting by his peers in the Players Choice Awards. He was named the 2012 MLBPlayer of the Year by The Sporting News, while also bringing home the Hank Aaron Award as the AmericanLeagues top hitter and a Silver Slugger Award as the top offensive third baseman in the American League.

All of the hardware was well deserved after a season that produced a combination of numbers not seen in baseball in many decades. In addition to leading the league in batting average, home runs and RBI, he also ledthe league with 377 total bases, 84 extra-base hits and a .606 slugging percentage, while he finished second with109 runs scored and 205 hits, fourth with a .393 on-base percentage and seventh with 40 doubles. Cabrera is thefirst player in baseball to hit at least .330 with 205-or-more hits, 40-or-more doubles, 44-or-more home runs and139-or-more RBI since Joe Dimaggio did so for the New York Yankees in 1937. It was just the eighth time in histo-ry a player had reached all of those plateaus in the same season as Cabrera joined Dimaggio, Lou Gehrig, JimmieFoxx and Hack Wilson as the only players to accomplish the feat.

A proven leader in the sports, restaurant and entertainment industries, Michael Ilitch enters his 21st full season asOwner/Director of the Detroit Tigers. He was a driving force behind the creation of the Tigers spectacular new home, Comerica Park, and contributed

more than 60 percent of the financing for the $300 million facility. Served a key role in designing the new ballpark, bringing years of entertainment experience to the efforts that

resulted in many of the features that make Comerica Park a unique point of destination. Conceptualized and funded the redesign of the new High Definition video board and suite renovations at

Comerica Park following the 2011 season. Under his stewardship, the Tigers have made two World Series appearances; captured two American League

Championships; and are currently two-time defending American League Central Division champions, the only time in franchise history this feat has been accomplished.

Ilitch's acquisition of the Tigers on August 26, 1992 was the culmination of a long association with the club that saw him originally sign a minor league players contract with the organization in his early 20s.

Ilitchs playing career was cut short due to a knee injury during his fourth season playing minor league baseball. Founded Little Caesars Pizza in 1959 with his wife, MarianLittle Caesars, which is one of the top international

pizza chains with restaurants on four continents, celebrated its 50-year anniversary on May 8, 2009. Committed to business ventures in their hometown of Detroit, the Ilitches purchased the Detroit Red Wings in

1982 and have built them into an elite NHL powerhouse with four Stanley Cup titles in the last 16 seasons. Also purchased Olympia Arenas, Inc. (renamed Olympia Entertainment in 1996), which manages several

restaurants, sports and entertainment venues in the Detroit area. While many businesses were leaving Detroit's urban center, the Ilitches in 1987 purchased the neglected Fox

Theatre, a 1928 landmark on the famous Woodward Avenue...with great effort, the building was restored to its original splendor and was reopened with 5,000 seats in 1988it is now among the highest grossing theatres of its size worldwide.

In 1989, the family further committed its efforts to reviving Detroit's downtown by relocating its suburban Little Caesars headquarters to the Fox Theatre's adjacent 10-story office buildingsince then, the area around the Fox and Comerica Park has seen significant development, including the Ilitch-owned City Theatre and Hockeytown Caf.

Created Olympia Development in 1996 to promote development in downtown Detroit. In 1999, Ilitch Holdings, Inc., was formed to provide the familys primary business interests in the food, sports

and entertainment industries with professional services. Ilitch has received Presidential Citations from three United States Presidents -- Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush

and Ronald Reagan for feeding the hungry through the Little Caesars Love Kitchen. Ilitch was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and U.S. Hockey

Hall of Fame in 2004. Ilitch has been honored by many for his tireless efforts in Detroit and surrounding communities with many

awards, including most recently the Joe Louis Brown Bomber Jacket Award presented to individuals that have made a positive impact on the young people in the community...in addition, he has received the Distinguished Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award from the Michigan Department of Health for promoting and demonstrating exemplary performance in advancing principles of human rights, equality and positive social change and most recently received a Shining Light Regional Cooperation Award for exemplary regional leadership.

In 2007, Ilitch was given the Secretarys Award, the highest honor given to a civilian by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, for his Little Caesars Veterans Program, which was created in 2006 to provide honorably discharged veterans with a business opportunity when they transition from service or seek a career change.

In 2008, Ilitch was rated the number one owner in professional sports by Turnkey Sports and Entertainment. In 2010, Ilitch was voted the most effective team owner in the NHL by a Sports Business Journal survey. ESPN The Magazines Ultimate Standings 2011 ranked Ilitch as the number one franchise owner in all of

professional sports for honesty, commitment to community and loyalty to core players.
