“The combination of human and electric assisted power forms as an efficient alliance which assures the most effective result in terms of mobility.” This is our credo and philosophy; it’s the phrase that drives us to develop innovative, high performance ebike components, and the test by which we validate our designs.
After the successful launch of our first HumanElectroSynergy Component (HESC) line in 2011, we are now looking to a new season with an upgraded generation of HESC products. With the diversification of our HESC component lines and a new service concept we are clearly putting our main focus on the fast growing ebike/pedelec market. By offering a wider range of products featuring innovative components and solutions like our new TwinSensor line, we give our customers the freedom to choose from various different solutions.
Why use a front motor design? With several different motor locations on the market, we get asked this question a lot. Our position is that front wheel motor technology still offers the best weight/performance ratio giving the possibility to design light and elegant looking ebikes/pedelecs. As well, the front motor drive system enables bikes to be manufactured with a very effective cost/perfor-mance ratio, opening the market to a wider range of users.

twinsensor // how it worksOur TwinSensor crank set combines 2 sensors wihtin one crank set. The centerpiece forms a state-of-the art torque sensor de-vice which continuously monitors pedal pressure, with the sensor telling the controller to send exactly the right amount of power to the motor so the wheel speed is maintained. The harder the rider pushes on the pedals, the more power is delivered, yet feeds back a very natural and smooth pedaling sensation to the rider. The torque sensor is supported by a built-in rotation sensor which monitors the movement of the crank set.

twinsensor // SMART ASSIST TECHNOLOGY
We equipped our TwinSensor crank set with both a TORQUE and an RPM (Rotations Per Minute) sensor. In addition, the motor carries a built-in speed sensor, bringing the total number of sensors to three. Our state-of-the-art controller constantly communicates with the three sensors, taking all the measured parameters (torque, rpm and speed) into account to calculate the needed assist power. Generally, based on pedal pressure, the controller sends instructions to the motor for higher assist, (uphill), reduced assist (downhill) or con-stant assist (level) power. Even though set to Standard mode (100% assist) the system still has the ability to vary its assist power (for example going uphill the system will provide 110% assist power). Vice-versa, the system will reduce assist power during downhill and cruising situa-tions resulting in energy savings, which yields longer battery life and increased range.

Our new 250W front hub motor stands out from the competition by offering an ultra low friction design yielding an op-timized input/output ratio with an incre-
ase in energy efficiency. Moreover, the newly designed gears enhance smoothness which results in a “silent running” motor operation. In combi-nation with our new twinsensor crankset we could achieve a silky smooth transition between assist and non-assist mode (e.g. when motor exceeds max. speed of 25km/h). Besides this, the motor features a freewheel func-tion which enables riders to use their bike like a normal bicycle if the sys-tem is shut off, or the motor exceeds the maximum 25km/h assist speed.

The HESC torque sensor was desig-ned together with our crank set fea-turing our patented sensor activator. The sensor mounts directly to the bottom bracket shell with the RH BB set cup, so does not require a spe-cial frame design. The crank set con-tinuously monitors pedal pressure,
with the sensor telling the control-ler to send exactly the right amount of power to the motor so the wheel speed is maintained. The harder the rider pushes on the pedals, the more power is delivered, yet feeds back a very natural and smooth pedaling sensation to the rider.
The device consists of two key items. The magnet (no. 1), which acts like a sender, will get shifted alongside the sensor (no.2)
depending on the torque applied to the pedal. The sensor (receiver) itself measures the variance between the starting point
and the current position and sends a signal to the controller. The controller then calculates the needed assist power.

Good service is the key to success. SR Suntour offers a worldwide service network throughout own SR Suntour subsidiaries and local distributors. Our HESC products follow our Quick Service Product (QSP) philosophy adapted from our suspension fork business. Integrating this philosophy into our electric bike components provides the possibility that HESC components can be serviced locally.
Another part of our QSP philosophy is the built-in “Intelligent Error Message Report System” which sends error codes to the display in case any sys-tem is not functioning normally. This system enables the dealer to make an initial diagnosis therefore speeding up the troubleshooting process. Since this system does not require a PC or laptop to hook up to, it is very handy and effective.
OEM – Training
Our OEM “Train the Trainer” concept is another module of our full service strategy. Assembling ebikes/pedelecs is one of the most critical procedures during the entire product production process, and its quite different to the assembling process of “standard” bikes. Supporting your staff by providing a professional seminar about the proper assembling procedure of our electric components adds expert knowledge to your production teams and assures a high level of assembly quality
IBD Dealer Training
HESC systems and components are designed based on our “Quick Service Product” philosophy. This enables the local dealers to make an initial diagnosis when a problem occurs. Additionally, we would like to give your dealers the opportunity to learn more about our electric bike components and get an insightful look about the on-site serviceability of our HESC component at one of our dealer technical seminars held throughout the year.

The riding distance of an electric assisted bike is one of the key features, and the same time most critical information of each ebike/pedelec system. To provide you with reliable and comparable data concerning the riding distance we developed our own in- house test method for all of our HESC products. Each new generation of our HESC components has to run through this test before we release the products to the customer. Below you will find an explanation of our test criteria, giving you information about the rider’s weight, bike weight and most important, the road profile which our test riders go through multiple times.
