2013 – FIRST FISH POND IN PATIKO
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
In December 2012, a group of volunteers from Bologna funded with a loan the costruction of a
fish farm in a pond located in the lands of the ugandan association Dero Farmers Association, the
Figure 1 shows the situation of the pond before the starting of the cleaning and excavation works
in December 2012.
Farmed fish are tilapia, a fish typical of the area and that is perfectly suited to live in ponds and it
is good to eat. Because at the momenti there are few fish farms near Gulu it’s hard to find fresh
fish at the market so they will be sold easily and will be also useful to integrate the diet of the
local population.
The maintenance of ponds and farm management are carried out by Dero Farmers Association
under the coordination and supervision of Jacob Awachango.

PARTNER
The Dero Farmers Association was founded in 2008 and legally registered in 2009. The
association is located 32 km from the town of Gulu in the Gulu district, Aswa County, Sub
County Patiko, Kal Parish, and Omoti Sub Parish.
The association carries out agricultural activities, such as the cultivations of corn, soybeans and
sunflower seeds; in January 2013, the Dero Farmers Association started a project of fish farming
in a pond built with the contribution of Pace Adesso - Peace Now. With these activities, the
association supports the most vulnerable people in the community, such as the elderly and
orphans, and also carries out activities to prevent the spread of HIV and other dangerous
diseases.
The association is currently composed of 20 members as follows:
15 men including 13 young people (17 – 35 years) and 2 seniors (over 55 years)
5 women including 2 young people (17 – 35 years) and 3 seniors (over 55 years)

2014 – SECOND FISH POND AND IMPROVING OF THE
ACTIVITIES IN PATIKO
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
For the year 2014 Dero Farmers Association has planned to improve the activities with the
following projects:
IMPROVE THE FIRST FISH POND AND BUILD A SECOND POND: in the beginning of
2014 improve the production of the first fish pond and build a second pond to expand the
fish production activities. The second pond will improve the sustainability levels of all the
fish farming activity because some cost will be shared between the two fish ponds and so the
productivity levels will be higher respect the year before (TOTAL COST: 2’351 EURO).
START A SOYA BEAN FARMING ACTIVITY: in the Table 4 are shown the costs for a
plantation of soya bean that can be used to produce the feeding for the fish pond (TOTAL
COST 1’544 EURO)
BUY A GRINDING MACHINE: a grinding machine can be used by the Dero Farmers
Association to process the soya been seeds in order to produce the feed for the fish with a
decrease of almost 40% of the total cost for the feed. This machine will also help in raise
more income through sales of animal feeds, and grinding maize corn for at a fee for other
human consumption since the entire parish has no grinding mill (TOTAL COST: 2’121
EURO).

ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF THE PROJECTS
Respect the first fish pond project there has been increase in the cost of some items for the
following reasons:
for fingerlings, because it’s necessary to buy a single sex fingerlings which has better quality
than the locally available ones and has better market prices. And so, the prices for the hybrid
fingerlings are much higher than the locally available ones;
there has been increase in the units quantities of the feeds because the hybrid fish have to be
given more and regularly feeds compared to the local fish if the harvesting period to be
shorter and better quality;
there is also the additional cost of 106 euro for the purchase of a fishing net for the Dero
Farmers Association, that may be very useful for harvesting and periodic catching of
predators from the pond.
