MESSAGE  FROM  THE  CHAPTER  PRESIDENT,    BRIAN  CEBULL

Good  evening  and  welcome  to  the  2013  Montana  Safari  Club  fundraiser  banquet.  Thank  you  very  much  for  attending.              2012   was   another   great   year   for   the   Montana   Chapter   of  Safari   Club   International.   After   a   successful   fundraiser   last  March,  and  thanks  to  the  generosity  of  the  many  people  who  spent  their  hard  earned  money  at  our  event,  we  were  able  to  make   a   positive   impact   in   our   community.   We   sponsored  local   students   and   local   teachers   to   attend   SCI’s   American  Wilderness   Leadership   School   (AWLS)   in   Jackson   Hole  Wyoming  where  they  honed  their  wilderness  skills  and  learned  the  importance  of  hunting  as  a  conservation  tool.  In  August,  we  participated  in  the  first  annual  Big  Sky  Youth  Event  held  at  Blue  Creek  Sporting  Complex.  This  free  event   exposed   over   125   youth   and   their   parents   to   archery,   rifle,   and   shotgun   shooting   as   well   as   lessons   on  wildlife  and  conservation.  Our  chapter  sponsored  a  delicious  barbeque  meal  for  all  the  youth  participants  and  their  families.  In  addition,  we  were  able  to  contribute  to  a  local  Wounded  Warrior  program  that  sponsors  hunting  trips  for  our  returning  heroes.                This   year’s  banquet   theme   is   “Young  Hunters,  Our  Future”.  We  all  need   to   sit  back  and   reflect  on   the   future  of  hunting   as   we   know   it   and   ask,   “Why   do   I   hunt?”   Although   many   urbanites   consider   hunting   as   barbaric   and  anachronistic,  those  of  us  who  were  brought  up  in  the  hunting  lifestyle  know  that  is  not  the  case.  From  those  long  sleepless  nights  as  youngsters  before  the  opening  night  of  elk  season,  to  that  sub-‐zero  November  morning  in  your  deer   stand  when   you   question   your   own   sanity,   those   of   us   that   live   to   hunt   and   hunt   to   live   understand   the  passion  of  being  a  hunter  and  the  importance  of  hunting  to  the  future  of  our  wildlife.      We   need   to   set   a   path   forward   tonight   to   determine   how   we   are   going   to   pass   that   passion   on   to   our   next  generation,  hence   the   theme  of   tonight’s  banquet.  Many  of  us  were   fortunate   to  have  a  parent  or  mentor  who  brought  us  along  on  those  early  morning  trips  while  others  were  able  to  discover  their  hunting  passion  later  in  life  as  adults.  Even  if  you  don’t  have  children  of  your  own,  or  if  your  children  are  grown,  consider  what  you  can  do  to  instill  the  hunting  passion  in  a  youngster  that  you  know.  We  have  3  separate  deer  hunts  and  a  pheasant  hunt  that  were   donated   specifically   as   opportunities   for   youth   to   experience   the   thrill   of   hunting   in   Montana.   Consider  buying  one  of  these  hunts  for  a  youngster  that  you  know  or  even  one  that  you  don’t.  Also,  consider  taking  a  friend  hunting  who  has  expressed  interest  but  hasn’t  made  the  commitment.  All  it  takes  to  instill  the  passion  in  a  child  or  adult   is   a   single   great  outdoor   experience  with   a  mentor.   Take   someone  new  on  a  hunt,   even   if   only   for   a   few  hours;  be  a  mentor  and  instill  the  passion  into  our  future  hunters,  both  young  and  old.        Please  join  us  in  supporting  this  great  fundraising  event,  which  will  allow  us  to  continue  our  mission  of  education,  conservation,  and  humanitarianism  in  our  local  community.  We  will  make  sure  that  we  do  everything  we  can  as  a  Chapter  to  help  instill  the  hunting  passion  in  as  many  youth  and  adults  as  possible.  Please  consider  joining  SCI  and  the  Montana  Chapter  if  you  are  not  a  member.  We  are  always  looking  for  enthusiastic  people  to  join  our  Board  of  Directors  to  help  guide  the  activities  of  our  Chapter.        Lastly,   I   would   like   to   thank   all   the   volunteers   and   donors   that   made   tonight   possible.   Putting   on   this   event  requires   a   huge   time   commitment   and,   of   course,   we   would   not   have   the   first   class   auction   and   raffle   items  without  the  wonderful  generosity  of  our  donors.                  Thank  you  and  have  an  enjoyable  evening.              Brian  Cebull,  Chapter  President

Clay  Cebull,  son  of  Brian  &  Amy  Cebull,  with  archery  bull  elk.

Thanks  to  Our  2013  Banquet  Donors

As an attendee, please help us thank all of the donors for their generous donations to the Montana Chapter’s Annual Banquet & Fundraiser. Their commitment to conservation, education and preservation is appreciated by those who take steps to conserve wildlife, educate our youth and preserve our hunting rights and, most importantly, by those who benefit from it. The proceeds from their donations will be used to continue the efforts of SCI Chapters locally and around the world.

The Montana Chapter Board of Directors would like to sincerely thank everyone, listed and unlisted, for your donations, your time and your support of our 2013 Banquet. Without your commitment towards conservation and education, banquets like these would not take place.

Dear  Members  of  the  Montana  Chapter  SCI,    It   is  very  difficult  for  me  to  find  the  words  to  express  the  gratitude  I  have  for  you  for  giving  me  the  opportunity  to  go  to  the  American  Wilderness  Leadership  School  (AWLS)  in  Jackson  Hole,  WY.  Because  I  had  not  planned  on  going  until  the  week  before  departure,  I  was  not  sure  what  to  expect.  I  was  quite  nervous  because  I  am  an  inexperienced  hunter  and  have  not  had  much  experience  outdoors.  By  the  end  of  the  camp,  neither  of  those  mattered.      I   had   the   honor   of   traveling   with   a   good   friend,   an   experienced   hunter   and   outdoorsman,   Ben   Gleason.   The   drive   to   Jackson   Hole,  although  long,  was  beautiful.  We  were  able  to  leave  early  enough  to  catch  some  morning  activity  in  the  park.  The  buffalo,  as  always,  were  quite  an  attraction.  We  were  also  able  to  see  a  small  bull  elk.  We  really  could  not  have  picked  a  better  time  to  make  the  drive.    I  had  never  been  to  Jackson  Hole  before  the  camp.  I  was  taken  aback  by  the  surrounding  area.  The  road  took  us  almost  13  miles  back  into  the  mountains.  We  followed  the  Hoback  river  which  was  absolutely  roaring  due  to  the  mass  amounts  of  rain  and  runoff.  At  that  point,  I  was  extremely  nervous   for   the   rafting   trip  we  would  be   taking  at   the  end  of   the  week.  All  worries   set  aside,  we   finally  arrived  at   the  school.  Immediately  we  were  welcomed  by  an  enthusiastic  and  warm  staff.  They  gave  us  a  tour  of  the  living  quarters,  the  classroom,  and  the  dining   room.   I  was   impressed  with   all   the   accommodations.   I   did  not   feel   like   I  was   living   in   a   high   class   hotel,  which  was   to   be  expected,  but  I  did  not  feel  like  we  would  be  “rough-‐necking”  it  in  the  woods.    That  evening  I  was  able  to  meet  the  other  students  participating  in  the  program  and  the  other  members  of  the  staff.  Each  person  I  met  made  me   feel  more  welcome.   I  was  surprised   to  hear  how  far  some  of   the  people  had   traveled   to  attend   the  camp.  They  were   just  as  blown  away  by  the  beauty  of  the  area  as  I  was.      The   remainder   of   the  week  was   filled  with   excitement,   adventure,   and   loads   of   new  knowledge.   I   had   gone   shooting   and  practiced   a  minimal  amount  of  archery  with  my  dad  years  before,  but  I  had  zero  experience  compared  to  the  other  kids.  We  spent  the  first  afternoon  at  the  shooting  range  with  a  .22  rifle  and  a  .20  gauge  shotgun,  practicing  the  art  of  fly  fishing,  and  working  on  archery.  The  rifle,  archery  and   fly   fishing   came   easily   to  me.   The   shotgun,   on   the   other   hand,  was   a   bit   difficult.   I   had   never   shot   anything   that   big   before.   The  instructor,  knowing  I  was  an  amateur,  broke  everything  down  for  me  and  set  me  up  properly.   I  hit   three  of   the   four  clay  pigeons  and  walked  away  with  a  sore  shoulder.      The  next  day  consisted  of  educating  us  on  wilderness  safety.   I  had  expected  this   lesson  to  be  monotonous  because  this   is  something  I  hear  about  all  time.  The  teachers  were  able  to  make  it  into  something  that  kept  us  interested.    A  speaker  from  Yellowstone  came  in  and  told  stories  about  his  experiences,  which  I  found  amusing.  The  entire  lesson  was  taught  in  such  a  way  that  I  was  able  to  review  things  I  had  already  learned  in  addition  to  obtaining  new  knowledge  all  with  the  absence  of  boredom.      Wednesday   and   Thursday   we   focused   on   our   backpacking   and   overnight   stay.   I   felt   that   they   had   provided   us   with   the   necessary  information  and  tools  the  previous  night  to  allow  us  to  prepare  by  ourselves.  They  treated  us  like  a  mature  groups  of  kids,  only  stepping  in  to  give  suggestions  or  point  out  mistakes.  We  arrived  early  in  the  evening  and  set  up  our  camp.  Just  when  I  thought  we  were  done  for  the  day,   they   took  us  on  yet  another  small  adventure   to  a  beautiful  waterfall.  Along   the  way,  Mr.  Glen   identified  and   taught  us  nearly  every  plant  along  the  trail.  The  entire  camp  was  organized  in  a  similar  fashion:  fun  integrated  with  education.    That  night  and  the  hike  back  the  next  day  were  a  nice  change.  We  were  able  to  break  off  into  our  groups  away  from  the  teachers.  Almost  every  person  I  talked  to  said  they  had  a  great  time  on  the  hike  and  they  appreciated  all  the  help  from  the  teachers.  After  arriving  back  at  camp  we  spent  to  rest  of  the  day  recuperating.  I  was  happy  to  see  that  they  were  giving  us  this  free  time  to  explore  the  camp  and  talk  to  everyone,  including  the  teachers.  Each  of  them  had  something  different  and  interesting  to  offer  to  the  camp.  I  learned  so  much  from  each  and  every  teacher  there.      The  day  of  the  rafting  came  and  it  was  by  far  my  favorite  day.  Once  again  we  were  well  prepared  and  organized.  The  water  and  weather  were  absolutely  perfect.  The  trip  itself  lasted  two  hours  at  the  most,  but  it  was  the  most  thrilling  two  hours  I  have  experienced.  It  was  filled  with  40-‐degree  swims,  rescuing  of  an  elderly  woman,  witnessing  of  massive  stoneflies,  and  as  always,  education  about  the  river.  As  fun  as   it  was,   it  was  nice  to  get  back  to  camp  and  enjoy  a  great  dinner  put  on  by  the  cooks.  We  had  a  miniature  graduation  ceremony  following  that.  We  ended  the  night  with  a  tomahawk-‐throwing  contest  directed  by  a  young  man  named  Cody.        I  met  some  of  the  most  intelligent  and  genial  people.  I  participated  in  activities  I  never  expected  to  do  such  as  the  shotgun  and  tomahawk.  I  learned  more  in  this  one  week  than  I  did  in  my  senior  year  of  high  school,  but  above  all  else,  I  had  a  miraculous  time.  If  it  had  not  been  for  your  generous  donation,  I  never  would  have  been  given  this  opportunity.  I  appreciate  this  more  than  you  know.  Thank  you  so  much  for  sending  me  to  AWLS.  It  truly  was  one  of  the  best  weeks  I  have  had.    Sincerely,    Alexis  Schreder
