SmartenIT Serves Management Requests ! Request for Application Traffic Management

!  Effective support of scale, agility, flexibility !  Improved network management in all layers, on inter-domain

basis !  Promising approach to offer a business potential in operational

perspectives for all players involved

! Solution: SmartenIT !  Incentive-compatibility in network management for content

providers, overlay providers, network providers, and end-users ! QoE- and social awareness by traffic characterization based on

network-related metrics and social patterns !  Energy efficiency with respect to both end-user devices and

underlying networking infrastructure

Challenges

! Technical and economic point of view: ! Traffic management for ISPs ! Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees ! Service combination ! Computational efficiency vs. energy consumption ! Limited resources of mobile devices ! Stakeholders interests

SmartenIT Challenges !  SmartenIT investigates trades-off, e.g., between efficient cloud resources

allocation and acceptable degradation of performance, Quality-of-Experience (QoE) and social metrics depending on application.

!  SmartenIT manages overlay applications needs in consideration of crucial QoE metrics and social patterns.

!  SmartenIT addresses services composed from components offered by different cloud providers with new traffic management mechanisms to be influenced by economic criteria on resource utilization and QoE.

!  SmartenIT applies an incentive-based, energy efficient, and socially-aware traffic management in the context of overlay applications.

!  SmartenIT verifies models for energy consumption of mobile devices, which can simulate overhead introduced by different management approaches.

!  SmartenIT designs traffic management solutions that employ appropriate incentive mechanisms to constitute the deployment and use of overlay applications more efficiently.

Scenarios in SmartenIT !  Inter-cloud communication

!  Through many operators, where applications demand for dedicated traffic quality levels

! Social Awareness !  Exploitation of meta-information extracted from

online social networks by network operators

! Global service mobility !  Integrated traffic management addressing trade-off

between energy efficient computation in the cloud and energy consumption on mobile device

! Collaboration for energy efficiency !  Energy efficiency is pursued through collaboration

among stakeholders, e.g. between data centers, e.g. between data center, ISP, end-users.
