HURRICANE TRADITIONS
THE HURRICANESIt began in controversy. Some reports say the players onthe 1927 football team held a team meeting to selectHurricanes, hoping they would sweep away opponentsjust as the devastating storm did on September 16, 1926.Another version holds that Jack Bell, a columnist for theold Miami News, asked Porter Norris of the 1926 teamwhat the team should be called. Told that the local dig-nitaries and University ofcials wanted to name the teamfor a local ora or fauna, Norris said the players wouldntstand for it and suggested Hurricanes since the openinggame had been postponed by such a storm.
ORANGE, GREEN AND WHITEUMs school colors were selected in 1926. The colors ofthe Florida orange tree represent UM. Orange symbolizesthe fruit of the tree, green represents the leaves and white, the blossoms.
THE UIn 1973, UMs athletic federation, the fundraising arm ofthe athletic department at the time, commissioned a localpublic relations expert to develop a distinctive logo. TheUniversity had gone several years with a variety of helmetand uniform changes and the federation noted that anumber of major colleges have the initials UM. Miamidesigner Bill Bodenhamer suggested the U idea, whichlent itself to distinctive logos for each sport as well as
slogans like U gotta believe and U is great.
SEBASTIAN THE IBISFolklore maintains that the ibis, a symbol of knowledgefound in the Everglades and Egypt, is the last sign ofwildlife to take shelter before a hurricane and the rstto reappear after the storm. The local marsh bird wasconsidered UMs rst unofcial mascot when the schoolyearbook adopted the name Ibis in 1926. Its popularitygrew among the students during the 1950s. In 1957, SanSebastian Hall, a residence hall on campus, sponsored an
Ibis entry in the homecoming celebration. The next year, student John Stormont performed at games in an ibiscostume that was glued, sewn and pinned together andwas the forerunner of todays bird. The Ibis has becomeone of the most recognizable college mascots in theUnited States.
THE SMOKEThe traditional Hurricane smoke entrance began in the1950s in the Orange Bowl. In an attempt to increase fanintererst, UM transportation director Bob Nalette cameup with the idea of using re extinguishers to produce thenow-famous smoke that the Hurricanes run through as theyenter the eld at Sun Life Stadium. The original setup
included ashing lights, two large hurricane ags and atape of a hurricane blasted over the loudspeaker while apipe welded together by Nalette blew smoke. The lightsare now gone, but the smoke and sound still remain.
CHEERLEADERSThe University of Miami cheerleaders are the catalyst forschool spirit. Along with cheering at both home and awayathletic contests, the squads are a strong public relationsarm for the University. The University of Miami has twosquads: All-girl and co-ed. Under the direction of headcoach Beverly Hew, a former Miami cheerleader, bothcheer squads are consistently rated among the nationsbest.
SUNSATIONSNow in their 25th year of entertaining fans, the Universityof Miami Sunsations dance team is a squad of enthusiasticand talented performers. Their reputation for excellencehas grown both locally and nationally. The Sunsations, coached by former member Kristine Stephenson, performat many charitable and community service events in addi-tion to Hurricane football and basketball games.
FOUR FINGERSAt the beginning of the fourth quarter at every homefootball game, Miami players and fans can be seenholding up four ngers. The sign indicates their belief thata game is won in that crucial nal period. True Hurricanefans and players use the sign as a symbol that they ownthat last quarter.
