LADY BIRD LAKEThis wide section of the Colorado River is the city’s premier recreation area. Common ways to explore include walking or jogging the 10-mile crushed-grantie path, or renting a stand-up paddleboard. Located on the lake’s shoreline is the Auditorium Shores park, which is home to many open-air concerts.

ZILKER PARKA cluster of fields, Zillker Park is one of the country’s foremost urban parks. It’s also home to a few of the city’s most beloved at-tractions: Overlooking downtown’s skyline, the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue honors Aus-tin’s favorite guitar hero; Barton Springs Pool is a 900-foot-long natural spring-fed pool with a blissful year-round temperature of 68 de-grees; and the Zilker Park Botanical Gardens is a shady, tranquil collection of sitting patios and flowered gardens.

CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICASThe Circuit of The Americas (COTA) opened for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in 2012 and continutes to go strong. The Austin360 Amphitheater, a live open air music venue, spotlights the main attraction: CoTA’s 3.4-mile race track.

Things to Do IN AUSTIN, TEXAS

SOUTH CONGRESS BATSAt dusk March through September, pick a spot and watch as 1.5 million free-tailed Mexican bats emerge from their home under the bridge and into the Austin night sky. The Congress Avenue Bridge is currently home to the world’s largest urban bat colony. The bats flight across Lady Bird Lake attracts as many as 100,000 tourists annually.

LIVE MUSICThe music of Austin has gone beyond 6th Street and now includes other areas such as Red River, the University of Texas, the Ware-house District and Downtown, South Lamar, South Austin, East Austin and the Market Dis-trict where bars and clubs of every kind can be found. Every night over one hundred venues stage live music. Austin’s official motto is the “Live Music Capital of the World”. Austin sup-ports two orchestras: the Austin Symphony Orchestra and the Austin Civic Orchestra.

TEXAS STATE CAPITOLThe red-granite Texas State Capitol building and its lush gardens at the top of Congress Avenue has undergone millions of dollars of cosmetic restoration. The national historic landmark, which is 14 feet taller than the U.S. Capitol, of-fers free, guided 90-minute tours all day.

BOB BULLOCK TEXAS STATE HISORY MUSEUMOn the outskirts of the University of Texas campus, three floors of engaging and interac-tive exhibits tell the story of Texas. Visitors can see an IMAX film while visiting.

Part 2What exactly happens on a neurobiological basis when we live our normal existence? What are the online wakeful underpinnings of consciousness? How does this vary from offline/sleep information processing? What are the implications of these data on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model? This workshop will examine current neuro-biological research regarding online/wakeful information processing, including sensation, perception, somatosensory integration, cog-nition, memory, language and motricity. In addition, off-line/sleep information process-ing, such as slow wave sleep and cognitive memorial processing, as well as REM/dream sleep and its function in emotional memory processing will be examined. The final sec-tion will integrate these data to illustrate their consistency with the tenets of the AIP model and the implication of this material with re-spect to current EMDR treatment principles.

SESSION 201THE CUTTING EDGE OF MIND-BODY MEDICINE: FROM IMMUNOLOGY TO NEUROSCIENCEJOAN BORYSENKO, PH.D.

The most important determinant of physical health is mental health. Adverse childhood experiences set the stage for chronic illness, substance abuse, and trauma later in life through epigenetic changes, neurochemistry, immune function and brain wiring. We will examine how evidence-based psychological interventions rewire neurohormonal circuitry and help restore both physical and men-tal homeostasis. Interventions include the modification of explanatory style, stress har-diness and resilience training, narrative medi-cine, meditation and mindfulness techniques, imagery, and cognitive approaches. Since the quality of the provider-client relationship is key to healing, there will be a focus on how to optimize the therapeutic bond.

SESSION 232A WINDOW INTO THE BLACK BOX: SUBLETITES OF EMDR PROCESSINGPHILIP MANFIELD, PH.D.

EMDR processing can seem like a black box, a process that mysteriously results in healing. Clients often spontaneously use the word, “magic.” As clinicians, we are gratified by the results, and may not be so interested in spe-cifically what caused EMDR to be effective in a particular session, except when it wasn’t. That’s when we need to know what is go-ing on in that black box so that we can fix it. This presentation uses video segments of five EMDR sessions to illustrate how to think about EMDR processing and get it back on track when it’s not working.

SESSION 301ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES STUDYVINCENT FELITTI, M.D.

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study is a long term, in-depth, epidemiologic analysis of over 17,000 middle-aged, mid-dle-class Americans, matching their current health status against 10 categories of ad-verse childhood experiences that occurred on average a half-century earlier. This ongo-ing collaborative effort by Kaiser Permanente and the CDC found that:

• Adverse childhood experiences are surprisingly common although typically concealed and unrecognized because of time, shame, secrecy, and social ta-boo.

• They still exert a profound effect 50 years later, although now transformed from life experience into organic disease and mental illness.

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing emphasis on the role of the AIP in EMDR. Yet, while there is substantial re-search supporting the efficacy of EMDR pro-cedures, the underlying assumptions of the AIP are unproven. Thus, the purpose of this presentation is to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the AIP from both a theoreti-cal and clinical perspective. It is posited that a frank, open, and nuanced discussion of the AIP will be of benefit to the participants and greater EMDR community. Significant time has been allotted for audience questions and comments.

In this session, we will present an overview of how such models can be evaluated, and then review each of them, asking what it can tell us both about how EMDR works and about the effects of eye movements in specific. Our own REM sleep mimicry model will be presented in more de-tail, and its fit with the AIP model examined.

SESSION 431NEUROBIOLOGY, ADAPTIVE INFORMATION PROCESSING, AND TRAUMATIC DISSOCIATIONULRICH LANIUS, PH.D.

Recent neuroscience research is discussed with a view towards increasing our under-standing of underlying neurobiological pro-cesses with respect to the phenomenology of dissociation. It is suggested that dissocia-tion is a result on a breakdown in the link-ing of different neural networks in the time domain, e.g. information processing. Recent research suggests that both lower brain structures as well as higher brain structures are involved. It is suggested that this process is essential to our understanding both of dis-sociation on one hand, as well as Adaptive Information Processing on the other.

therapy; he proposes that a combination of EMDR and strategies drawn from the psycho-therapy of dissociative identity disorder could be very useful for a large subset of individuals with psychotic diagnoses.

SESSION 434EARLY EMDR INTERVENTIONS: PREVENTING PTSD AND OTHER DISASTER RELATED INJURIESBEVERLEE LAIDLAW-CHASSE, MC, LPC; JULIE MILLER, MC, LPC, LISAC

This workshop will familiarize participants with early EMDR interventions for those in-volved in a recent traumatic event. Partici-pants will briefly address the science behind early psychological intervention after a trau-ma/disaster, including the physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual impacts during and after the event, with and without interven-tion. The memory of recent trauma differs from that of a more distant trauma in that it tends to be more fragmented or uncon-solidated and less integrated into a coherent, narrative sequence of events or theme clus-ter (Shapiro, Francine, 2001) (Shapiro, Elan, 2008). Several EEI protocols will be reviewed.

SESSION 435EMDR TREATMENT OF MIGRAINE AND CHRONIC DAILY HEADACHEEMRE KONUK, MA; ZEYNEP ZAT, MA

Chronic headache is one of the most com-mon and disabling problems that one can

have. EMDR treatment was used for its treat-ment and has provided promising results. An EMDR Chronic Headache Protocol was devel-oped and a pilot study was conducted to see its effectiveness. The preliminary analy-ses revealed that the frequency, duration and the strength of the headaches, the number of Emergency Care visits, and the number of pills taken by patients decreased significantly. The aim of this workshop is to present how to use this protocol in the treatment of pa-tients diagnosed with Chronic Daily Headache and Migraine.

SESSION 436ENHANCING COMPETENCY IN EMDR THROUGH EFFECTIVE CLINICAL SUPERVISION AND CONSULTATIONDEREK FERRELL, PH.D.

The effective integration of the teaching and learning of EMDR into clinical practice is some-times easier said than done. Recent research has indicated that over 40% of EMDR training participants struggle to integrate EMDR into their clinical practice post EMDR training. This workshop will outline initially some of the findings from a Delphi study which explored EMDR Consultant’s experiences in relation to the teaching and learning of EMDR and how this relates to clinical practice, and more spe-cifically, EMDR clinical supervision and con-sultation. Key attributes of EMDR clinical su-pervision/Consultation will be reflected upon using various models and frameworks.
