Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan,

The entire Defiance College family joins me in wel-coming you to our campus and to today’s game.

We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of De-fiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and ter-ritories.

Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain.

As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individual-ized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service.

At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the class-room in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world.

While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an oppor-tunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes.

I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is.

We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and aca-demic events we are so proud to host.

Go Jackets!

Sincerely,

WELCOME TO DEFIANCE

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGEDefiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstand-ing academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environment, students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Con-science: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the Presi-dent’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commit-ment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and ser-vices to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification.

Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in com-petition for jobs and graduate school placement.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide op-portunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely ex-amine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cam-bodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Ser-vice Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adult-hood.

Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activi-ties include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity.

As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

DC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHYThe Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activ-ity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop thewhole person.

The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportuni-ties for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college cam-pus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equi-table sports opportunities will be available to both genders.

The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic star-dom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics pro-gram, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values.

The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defi-ance College mission statement … to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary – to explore aca-demic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience.

Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defi-ance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement.

Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams par-ticipate in service projects. During the 2011-12 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,028 hours of service in their community and around the country. The DC softball team participates in numerous service projects each year. In 2011-12, the softball team volunteered a total of 375 hours to multiple projects.

Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives campus- and community-wide, including the pathbreaking Project 701. Several have also received scholarships for international projects.

Katie Miller, Katie Grubbs, Megan Pleskovic, Allie Rowland, Sandra Hubler, Ka-tie Haydett and Brianna Ferguson are members of the softball team who are Service Leaders for the current academic year. The Service Leader program rewards previous community service and develops students’ leadership skills.

The softball team continued its longstanding tradition of volunteering and making an impact in the community by working at the Special Olympics Regional Softball Tournament in August. Twenty players and coaches volunteered at the event.

Participating in the event marked the fifth straight year that members of the squad spent a day working with Special Olympic athletes in a variety of ways, which included running the concession stand, passing out programs, selling mer-chandise and running scoreboards. The team gave a helping hand in the community as well when they traveled to Toledo to volunteer with the annual Make-A-Wish Holiday Party. Yhe Yellow Jacket softball program partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North-west Ohio by participating in their annual Holiday Party. “This service project really opened my eyes to just how fortunate I am,” said catcher Bri Ferguson. “The kids that we got to work with were so happy and fun, and I really genuinely enjoyed spending my day playing games with the kids and their families!”

The softball team was in charge of planning all of the games and events for the kids that were at the party and helping the participants play each game. Also at the party, the Yellow Jacket softball players painted faces and helped with the craft tables, making ornaments, icing cookies, and sending letters to Santa. The team also volunteered at the Defiance County Humane Society and with the Backpack Buddy program.

Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

JODIE HOLAVAHC

HEAD COACHEigth SeasonUniversity of Mount Union (‘01)

After seven seasons as the head coach of the Defiance College softball program, Jodie Holava is six wins shy of setting the record for most victories in school his-tory with a 154-137 overall record. Holava’s .529 winning percentage remains the best by any coach in program history, and the team has been even more impres-sive under her guidance against conference opponents, boasting a .633 winning percentage.

The Yellow Jackets have won three conference championships in seven years dur-ing Holava’s tenure, and finished among the top-three in the final standings in four out of six years. In 2012, the Jackets suffered a setback season by finishing tied for fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference at 7-and-9, just missing the conference tournament. DC had four of its members named All-HCAC performers. Defiance also produced five HCAC All-Academic members, two National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Academic Scholars and one HCAC player of the week.

Holava joined the DC family in 2006, after spending the 2004-2005 softball sea-son at Notre Dame College of Ohio as an assistant softball coach. With her help, the Falcons finished the season 23-17, marking the best record in school history. They finished 10-4 in the American Mideast Conference and reached the Region IX Tournament for the first time in school history

Prior to her stint at Notre Dame College of Ohio, Holava coached the Northcoast Spirit, a traveling softball team sanctioned by the National Softball Association. The Spirit went to the NSA World Series each year with Holava as their coach.

Holava earned her bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College in athletic training, with a minor in health and secondary education. A four-year starter for the Raiders, she was a two-time First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and twice named to the All-Central Region First Team.

KAYCEE BUTTKaycee Butt enters 2012-2013 for her second season as an assistant coach for the Defiance College softball program, after concluding her playing career with the Yellow Jackets in 2011. In her first year as an assistant, she helped coach the team to a 7-and-9 finish in conference, which was tied for fifth overall.

Butt graduated from Defiance College in May 2011 with a degree in sport manage-ment and rounded out her playing career on the softball field with the Purple and Gold. During her playing time with the Jackets, Butt helped the team to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championships in 2008 and 2009 and earned All-HCAC accolades during her senior campaign.

Butt also served on the Defiance College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years, was a four-time recipient of the DC Achievement Scholarship Award and spent four years with the school’s Citizen Leader Scholarship Program, log-ging over 200 hours of community service per year.

The outstanding work on the field, in the classroom and in the community does not overshadow Butt’s coaching background. The Hilliard, Ohio native gained valuable experience while assisting with a variety of softball camps and fall leagues hosted by Defiance College over the past four years.

Along with her coaching duties, Butt will work towards a master’s degree in educa-tion from Defiance College.

PLUMMER

With the Lady Jackets softball team losing seven starters that accounted for a total of 208 starts during the 2012 campaign. DC will be relying on the squad’s veteran leadership to guide the bevy of young players breaking in that lack experience, but pack plenty of po-tential.

PITCHERS: Junior Kailea Holbrook is the vet-eran of the pitching staff. Holbrook has started 25 games in 38 ap-pearances for the Jackets in her first two seasons. The junior re-ally came on during the 2011 cam-paign, as she led the pitching staff in wins (6), innings (106.1), com-plete games (7) and shutouts (1), while finishing second on the team in earned run average (3.95) and strikeouts (33). Returning for her sophomore sea-son, Lauren Dicke had a solid first year with Defiance by recording 17 starts on the mound in 24 ap-pearances. Dicke accounted for a 4.51 earned run average over the season and improved to a 3.64 era during HCAC play. She led the Purple and Gold in strikeouts (43) and complete games (7), while also finishing second on the team in wins (4) and innings pitched (99.1).

Joining Holbrook and Dicke on the pitching staff are sophomore Katie Grubbs and freshmen Ka-tie Patchin and Alli Rowland. The three will be relied on to contribute multiple innings this season in spot-starts and relief. Grubbs chipped in with 12.1 innings of work in six ap-pearances over the 2012 season.

CATHERS: DC will boast freshman Makayla McAvoy behind the dish to kick off the 2013 season. The Mt. Gilead, Ohio, native will be looked at to bring stability to the catcher posi-tion, as this will be the second-straight season the Jackets will have a new face catching.

Junior Hallie Sullivan and sopho-more Brianna Ferguson will back-up McAvoy at catcher. Sullivan received some playing time in 2012 and notched 14 plate ap-pearances. Ferguson also gained experience behind the plate, as a member of the DC junior varsity team.

MIDDLE INFIELD: Third-year player Maggie Neanen will be taking over at second base for Jessica Mandula, who gradu-ated following the 2012 season. Neanen started 13 contests in 25 appearances during her second season with the Defiance softball squad. Defensively, she account-ed for 30 put outs and 27 assists.

Also manning the second base position will be freshmen Sandra Hubler and Megan Pleskovic along with sophomore Kelsey Heck. The young group will look to gain ex-perience in spot appearances and take in knowledge from the other veteran infielders.

Returning at shortstop for the Pur-ple and Gold is sophomore Tori Plummer. The second-year player compiled 28 starts for DC as the designated player and was two-for-two in stolen base attempts during the 2012 campaign. Plummer also recorded the second-most assists on the team with 55.

FIRST BASE: First base for the Yellow Jack-ets 2013 campaign will primarily be handled by the rotation of the pitching staff. Junior Kaliea Hol-brook, sophomore Lauren Dicke and freshman Katie Patchin will be working together to split duties on the mound and first during play.

Both Holbrook and Dicke gained experience at first base last sea-son. Together, the pair combined for 17 hits in 94 at bats with four scores and three runs batted in. Sophomore Chelsea Ebersole will also be in the mix for some playing time at first.

THIRD BASE: The Yellow Jackets third base po-sition will continue to be handled by junior Macy Ferrall. The Honor-able Mention All-HCAC selection started all 38 games she appeared in last season and was productive in the field and at the plate. Fer-rall led the team in both triples (2) and hit-by-pitches (3), while also finishing third-best on the team in runs (11), doubles (6), runs batted in (13), total bases (35), slugging percentage (.393) and on-base percentage (.349). Defensively, the junior boasted a strong .941 fielding percentage and headed the squad with 80 assists.

Backing up Neanen at third will be senior Ashley Switzer and fresh-man Alicia Carter. Switzer will be playing in her fourth season for DC and was able to gain her first at bat in 2012 and came away with a hit to stand a perfect 1-for-1 in her career.

OUTFIELD: Senior Katie Miller will be the heart and soul of the outfield and team, as she enters her fourth campaign with the most experience on the entire Lady Jacket squad. The two-time First-Team All-HCAC selec-tion has started 111 contests in her first three seasons with Defiance. During 2012, Miller led the team in multiple offensive categories in-cluding at-bats (103), home-runs (4), runs batted in (49), total bases (49) and sacrifice flies (3), while finishing second-best offensively in runs (12), doubles (8) and slug-ging percentage (.476). The senior was voted HCAC Hitter of the Week from April 2 through April 9 and fin-ished top-five in the conference for the categories of slugging, RBI’s, doubles and home runs.

With the departure of seniors Aubrie Ridinger and Katelyn Samples, DC will need to fill the vacant spots left in the outfield. Taking over in right will be junior Anna Vasquez. The West Unity, Ohio, native has made 14 ap-pearances in her first two seasons mainly as a defensive replacement or pinch runner. Getting the nod in center will be sophomore Brit-tany Shough. The Riverside High product collected seven starts in 25 appearances during her first sea-son with the Purple and Gold. She racked up 15 at bats and chipped in with four runs on the year.

The Jackets will have senior Glo-ria Basinger, sophomore Morgan Williamson and freshman Katie Haydett working in the outfield this season. Basinger comes in with the most experience of the trio, earning seven varsity appearances in 2012 and recording 10 at bats with a pair of hits, two runs and a walk.
