“The archivists at the Congregational Library gave me access to a recently acquired and unprocessed collection of conversion relations that, as far as I can tell, have not yet been studied by scholars. The Library has a rich collection, which is all the more useable thanks to their knowledgeable and helpful staff.”

GRADUATE STUDENT, BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY

“Our church in South Hadley was beginning the process of gathering information for closing. As it became evident we were losing our hope and our ability to go for-ward, I remembered that over the years, I had received information from this library asking for records. I found (CL Archivist) Jessica to be a sound resource, easy to converse with and very cooperative. What a treasure she must be for all who contact her.”

“With gratitude for the absolutely splendid work of The Congregational Library. What an amazing resource.”

we have today, one of the largest and most complete collections of Congregationalism’s “founding fathers” anywhere.

Though these men and women are strangers to most of us, their generosity established a legacy of remembering, one that the Congregational Library still honors today. We do this in many different ways, not least keeping our rare books in a secure and climate-controlled space, managed by an archival staff with the unique training, skill, and experience required for a collection of this historic value. We are also gathering more records of the past through our Hidden Histories program, taking old or hard

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The men and women who organized the Congregational Library in 1853 gave us a unique and precious gift. Their goal was a

collection of Puritan and Pilgrim literature second to none, to be used not just by elite scholars but by the Congregational churches themselves. And so people like Henry Martyn Dexter, Samuel Capen, Cornelius Patton, a Mrs. Ruen Thomas of Brookline and a Mr. Anson Titus of Swampscott,

Massachusetts, went to work. They scoured dusty attics and bookstores, even donating prized volumes of their own to build what

to find documents from local churches, digitizing them, and making them available on our website.

Most of all we carry on the founders’ legacy by helping people understand what these old books and records are saying to us today. And so we offer online materials and classes, History Matters luncheons, walking tours, and church anniversary workshops.

We also have an archive staff in tune with the latest in library technology, new capabilities which will make our collection much more visible to researchers on the web. One of the virtues of being relatively

small is being nimble: it is a joy to see ourselves moving toward the cutting edge of the library world.

The year ahead looks to be an exciting one for the Congregational Library, with the rollout of our brand new website this summer and, in October, a symposium and walking tour honoring Cotton Mather on what would be his 350th birthday. We are grateful, as always, for the many friends and members who make this possible.
