2013 Community Report

Introduction The Kilmore International School (TKIS) was established in 1989. It is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational boarding and day school for academically motivated students. Our motto – “Excellentia Academica Persequenda” – means “the pursuit of academic excellence”. Our mission is to encourage each and every student to reach their full academic potential. Classes are offered from Years 5 to 12 with boarding available from Year 6. The curriculum in Years 5 to 9 is based on the Australian curriculum and is designed to challenge capable students. All students must study a second language from Year 5 and our international students act as mentors to local students in Asian languages such as Mandarin and Indonesian. The curriculum in Years 11 and 12 is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB). There are now around 350 students from many nationalities.

Our point of difference is that we are an international school with half our students coming from offshore. This mixture of cultures and languages results in a rich lived experience for students and makes them world-ready. I'm very pleased with the IB results in 2013 with more than 40 per cent of students achieving an ATAR score greater than 90. With the Board of Directors and teaching staff, I look forward to building on the reputation of our school as Melbourne's world-standard international school.

TKIS Mission Statement An International School exists to serve the needs of its students within the wider international community. The aim of this School is to provide for boarding and day pupils, a general education of excellence in all areas. The School aims to develop, in a disciplined and caring environment, the spiritual, intellectual, cultural, physical and social capacities of all its students, and to encourage and nurture their individual talents and abilities. It further aims to develop a responsibility to the community by demanding high personal standards and encouraging constructive citizenship and consideration for others.

IBO Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
