7/28/2019 2013 CM info (2)[1] http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2013-cm-info-21 1/1 SURREY BRANCH - CM EXAMINATION PREPARATION COURSE 2013 Surrey Branch is again holding a series of evening classes in the Teaching Block  at the University of Surrey, Guildford for candidates sitting the CM Examination. he course will be of immediate benet to those sitting the examination in April  2013 and to those intending to take the examination in future years. The course will also be of assistance to candidates taking the AM examinations. With the exception of the rst evening, the course will run in two separate groups, one for bridge engineers and one for building structures engineers. A local Engineer’s ofce will be made available to candidate’s wishing to attempt a 7 hour question on a Saturday during the course. Typical Program: 1st Evening; One of last years successful candidates will explain the preparations he carried out before taking the exam, followed by presentations on the marking procedure by a past chief examiner and a current examiner. 2nd Evening; One examiner will work through a past paper and discuss solutions with the candidates. 3rd Evening: One of the course leaders will demonstrate a solution of a past building structure question and discuss with candidates, followed by 2 leaders demonstrating short cuts. 4th Evening; Section 1 of a past paper will be attempted by groups of 2 or 3 candi - dates with assistance from the course leaders if required. 5th Evening; A number of details required in past papers will be attempted and discussed with a course leader. 6th Evening; The letter to a client and the method statement from past papers will be attempted by the candidates and discussed with the course leader. 7th Evening; a mock two hour test will be set with a choice from two building structures and one bridge question. For bridge candidates, the programme will follow the above with a variety of selected bridge past papers led by practising Chartered Bridge Engineers. The course will run on seven Wednesday evenings from 6th February to 20th March 2013 starting at 6.30 and nishing at 9.00 p.m. All course leaders and helpers are practising Structural Engineers drawn from the Branch membership. The fee for the course is £100 payable in on 6th February by cheque or cash. Cheques should be made out to IStructE Benevolent Fund. Please park in the Main visitors’ car park (free after 6.00 p.m.) and follow the campus signs to the teaching block. You will not need any special equipment but please bring pens, notepaper and a cal - culator. If you are familiar with any particular design guides, codes, timber, steel and reinforced concrete load/span tables, etc. it would be useful to have these with you. A pad of graph paper is useful for sketches and details.
