Gold Tone Family and Staff

Wayne and Robyn Rogers

Robyn and I started in the retail music business in 1976. Our early local success sparked our passions and entrepreneurial spirit. Nineteen years ago we began with a simple concept for an affordable travel banjo, and it was this idea that has developed into a world-wide enterprise now comprising over 130 instrument models.

As a musician and salesman in retail, it was obvious that the supply of affordable banjos and “alternative instruments” were poorly designed and could be improved with cost saving efforts. I partnered with a Korean factory, engineered my product to the very last detail, and then set up a luthiery shop in Florida to assemble and set up every instrument as only a real player can do. Visitors to our factory are amazed by our attention to detail, the setup jigs, and our entire team of dedicated workers.

In 2009, our family-owned and operated business in Titusville, Florida opened a 14,000 sq. ft. facility for our employees to produce the most affordable, best sounding and playing quality instruments in the world. Our office folks use no answering machines. we have retained a non-corporate USA-style work shop. Because of our diversity in alternative instruments, many well known professionals seek out our products, adding to their arsenal of available sounds.

All the best on your musical journey,Wayne Rogers, President & Founder

Our mission is to provide you with quality instruments that exceed your expectations at the very best price. Thank you for a great 19 years. We couldn’t have done it without you, our workers, and our professional endorsers putting our instruments to the test every day, and for that we are eternally grateful. It has been a dream come true, and we look forward to bringing you quality instruments for many years to come.

Our staff is directly responsible for allowing Gold Tone instruments to become one of the largest and unique instrument suppliers in the industry. Check out BanjoHangout.org and other acoustic websites to see what folks are saying about us. We are able to fill special custom orders, do vintage repairs, and develop new instruments and accessories. We are always open to new ideas and constantly push the envelope. Musicians are playing Gold Tone instruments at home, out on the road, and in recording studios all over the world. See a small list of artists on the back page that have helped grow the company over the years.

OB-500Designed by Wayne Rogers, this extraordinary banjo has elaborate metal engraving, gold plating, radiused fingerboard, modified tree of life fingerboard inlay design, maple/abalone neck and body binding, sophisticated resonator inlay, highly flamed maple neck, and 3-layer backstrap on back of headstock; features only found on banjos for $10,000.00 or more! Includes a deluxe archtop case.

OB-300This gold-plated beauty has similar features to the OB-500 without the metal engraving and radiused fingerboard. A curly maple neck and matching curly maple/abalone binding combine for a highly decorative 5-string. The sand-cast bell bronze tone ring is used in only the best banjos and provides a loud penetrating tone. A unique abalone/pearl truss rod cover matches the exquisite inlay throughout the banjo. Includes a deluxe archtop case.

“Unlike other tree of life patterns, we designed this modified tree of life inlay so the banjoist can easily determine the fret positions. Notice the fingerboard has flowers on the landmark fret positions and only vines on other positions. Simple but effective, and only the player

knows the difference!” -Wayne

Sure to be collector’s items, the Gold Tone Prestige Series banjo models are works of art. A combination of maple highlights, pearl, abalone, and figured wood provide the best decorative touches. Tone wise, they very well could be the best sounding banjos you’ve ever heard.

OB-250+ & OB-250+TP (TP=Tony Pass Schaeffer birch block rim)The JLS “Special #12” tone ring is a replica of the Gibson tone rings used in the Granada models in the 1930s. The maker, Jim Stull of San Antonio, Texas, has analyzed original Gibson tone rings and duplicated the specifications. When electronically tested for pitch, sustain and ring, it equals the original. This tone ring also has a slightly longer “skirt,” which provides more con-tact with the wood rim and direct contact with the heel of the neck for opti-mal tone. Both the OB-250+ and OB-250+TP come with the Gary Sosebee bridge and JLS #12 tone ring. The OB-250+TP comes with the Tony Pass Schaeffer birch block rim. Both include a deluxe archtop case.

OB-250Our flagship banjo for 15 years, the OB-250 is a classic reproduction of the most famous flathead bluegrass banjo with astonishing tone and playability. We’ve added additional features such as an ebony fingerboard, maple neck (instead of softer mahogany) and a maple resonator. The pot construction mates a sand-cast brass tone ring to a three-ply Canadian hard rock maple rim with a one-piece diecast pot metal flange.

OB-250AT ArchTop ModelThe ArchTop model includes a 40-hole sand-cast bell brass archtop tone ring, which produces more penetrating highs compared to a conventional flathead tone ring, as the vibrating head circumference is reduced. For banjoists who own a flat top, this is a great addition to their collection as it “cuts through” the high volumes at bluegrass jams.

OB-250LW Light Weight Model All players can recognize the astounding tone of this lightweight pro banjo. Almost 3 lbs. lighter than its Orange Blossom brothers, the OB-250LW has incredible volume that comes from an integral three-ply rock maple lathed tone rim. The top third of the rim is carved exactly like a flathead ring, which results in an authentic bluegrass tone. Give your weary shoulder and back some rest during the marathon jams without sacrificing the drive and punch needed for hardcore bluegrass music.

OB-275 (Previously the OB-175)Our first-ever Bell Bronze Pre-War Alloy Tone Ring is the result of joint efforts with our partners to experiment with bronze alloys to find the perfect tone. The “pre-war” tone ring (the Holy Grail of bluegrass tone) was made from one of three different formulas, depending upon the year of manufacture. We discovered these three alloys, had tone rings made to replicate each one, and chose the alloy content with the most penetrating tone.

Our GTR tone ring shape has a rounded top edge, which, when compared to the typical sharp angle on the common flathead ring, adds more contact area for vibration transfer. This allows the head to be tuned more tightly if desired. The original ring, when compared to ours, looks and sounds amazingly similar.

The OB-275 has perfectly fitting parts. Our shop is set up tp get the perfect tone-ring fit, the perfect neck-to-pot fit and a perfectly straight neck. Before delivery, we do all the final assembly and adjustments at our factory in Flor-ida. We check every adjustment to make sure the setup is optimal for tone and playability. This banjo comes with our lifetime transferrable warranty. Not even domestic builders can offer that. Includes a deluxe archtop hardshell case.

MC-150RP (Maple Classic)For the banjo player who likes to play both bluegrass and old-time music, the economically priced MC-150RP is convertible – the resonator may be easily detached for openback-style playing. This model has all quality parts, which provide excellent tone. Besides receiving rave reviews in a popular English folk magazine, the MC-150RP is the first in our line with a professional pot assembly including a 3/4” rim and a bluegrass flathead tone ring. The Maple Classic is also available in kit form (MC-KIT) for the do-it-yourself craftsman!

BG-250The BG-250 was one of the first full-sized instruments we produced. Its convertible feature allows for a great bluegrass tone, and by removing the resonator and brackets, you can play a genuine old-time openback. This is a great feature for players wanting to play both bluegrass and oldtime styles. The slim neck provides easy playability and the bell brass flathead tone ring contributes to its loud volume.

WL-250+Due to the enormous popularity of our standard WL-250 model, we have now introduced an exquisite version featuring our custom tree of life inlay. Unlike other tree of life inlay designs, the position markers are easily seen by the flower patterns for up the neck playing. A fingerboard scoop is not available for this model.

WL-250Our most popular openback ever! The design provides a plunky but punchy tone well-suited for old time and folk music. A White Ladye three-part tone ring is coupled with a 1/2” rim. Most competitors use a 3/4” bluegrass rim, but our 1/2” rim allows more air chamber volume. Other features include ebony fingerboard, vintage heel shape, no-knot tailpiece, and double adjusting truss rod. Includes a fingerboard scoop.

Remarkable tone and exquisite looks in a premium openback banjo.Newly redesigned, it now includes a traditional headstock and heel shape, and no-knot tailpiece.

BC-120Following the success of the Bob Carlin models BC-350 and BC-350+, Gold Tone introduced their new brother, the BC-120. This economically priced BC has many of the features of it’s costlier sibling – a 12” rim, a frailing scoop to play over the neck for a deeper tone, a wider fingerboard to facilitate drop thumb, and a “hot dog” vintage-style armrest – but it sells for a fraction of the price. For those who want to get into a 12” rim banjo at a beginner price, the BC-120 is for you. Comes with dual coordinator rods instead of a dowel stick. Gig bag included.

BC-350+The plus model is a gorgeous work of art. We used an exquisite vintage inlay style highly acclaimed during the heyday of banjos. Triple-plated gold hardware sets off the rich vintage brown mahogany stain. We pay special attention to Bob’s unique set up making sure the head is not too tight and has low string action without a hint of fret buzz. Features an innovative Gold Tone dowel stick/coordinator rod. The metal rod is inserted inside the dowel stick, which provides superior neck support and allows neck angle adjustments. For only a few dollars more than Bob’s original BC-350, you can own an eye catching collector’s banjo!

BC-350At the 2004 IBMA show, Bob and Wayne met to discuss the possibilities for developing a signature model. Bob wanted a 12” pot, scooped fingerboard, specific neck dimensions, and brass tone ring. These features were previously only found on banjos retailing for $1,200 or more. Bob made a trip to Gold Tone’s Florida factory to help design it. For two days, Wayne and Bob examined every possible spec and tested prototypes and every detail was fine tuned. Because a typical banjo has an 11” pot, Gold Tone invested in all new 12” tooling at its factory to assure perfectly fitted parts. The BC-350 features an innovative Gold Tone dowel stick/coordinator rod. The metal rod is inserted inside the dowel stick, which provides superior neck support and allows neck angle adjustments.

OT-6 (the Lojo)It’s a little-known fact that not all banjos had 5 strings. One common variation is the 6-string banjo. Unlike banjo-guitars, these 6-stringers have an additional long bass string running next to the usual short thumb string. This model, inspired by Chuck Levy, a Florida Banjo Champion (among other achievements), allows the player to play melodies an octave lower than normal. The 14” body actively promotes this low bass tone. For those who enjoy jamming, this instrument stands out with its louder volume.

Includes hardshell case.

Lojo & Longnecks

Chuck Levy has earned the title of Florida’s Old-Time Banjo Champion, is a prize-winning fiddler, and a respected banjo scholar. Chuck’s mastery has been recognized by Gold Tone, which developed the lojo to Chuck’s specifications. Chuck owns and plays an OT-6, OT-800, OT-10, and a PC-Banjola.

Made famous by Pete Seeger in the 50s and 60s, a long neck banjo is that of a 5-string banjo with 3 additional frets allowing the banjo to tune a minor third lower in the key of E. For traditional folk tunes, long neck banjos sound great with the male singing voice.

Mr. Maestro himself dropped by the booth at NAMM this winter and couldn’t keep his hands off of the OT-6. He had to take one home with him. We hope to see Taj jam on his OT-6 in the near future.

“Dinah” (gCGCD or aDADE) appears on David Holt’s It Just Suits Me, (JA0038), and is attributed to Aunt Jenny Wilson of Ivydale, West Virginia. I play this on the PC-Banjola because I like the way its quietness and sustain illustrate the mournful, wounded quality of this piece. About the tab: The tune starts with a slow roll across all four strings. The first full measure (and elsewhere throughout the tune) ends with an isolated strike of the 5th string with the thumb, occurring just before the finger strikes the 1st string closed at the second fret at the beginning of the second measure. (For the record, the 1st string is the string closest to your toes, and the 5th string is closest to your nose.) This creates a small syncopation that helps propel the tune forward. This 5th string strike can be left out according to the player’s choice.

“Old Folks at Home,” (gDGBD or aEAC#E) by Stephen Foster (1851) is largely remembered for its opening line: “Way Down Upon the Suwannee River.” Note the open string pull-offs on the 1st string at the 5th note of the 8th and 16th measures. I used the CEB-5 Cello Banjo to connect this piece to its minstrel roots, and because I like the big bold sound that it creates.

“Boatin’ Up Sandy” (gDGCD or aEADE) is a traditional fiddle tune that I first heard in West Virginia. There are open string pull-offs on the 2nd string at the 6th note of the 2nd and 6th measures. I like playing this on the OT-10 10-string banjo because the full ringing sound of the double strings reinforces the tune’s spooky quality. —Chuck Levy

CC-BG PackageA very important decision to make when deciding to learn banjo is choosing which instrument is best for you. Although many entry level banjos seem like a great deal, they can actually stifle your ability to learn by being hard to play, and hard to listen to. The keys to success are: 1) proper set-up, which keeps the strings low over the fingerboard (easier to play) while maximizing the pressure over the bridge (more volume), 2) quality parts that fit right and tight (eliminates rattle and buzzes and efficiently transfers string vibration into tone production), and top grade materials. The Cripple Creek Bluegrass Banjo Package was designed with this in mind. These banjos are built with quality parts and professionally set up in the Gold Tone shop with low string action and accurate intonation. You will find it a joy to tune and play. This package, with all the extras (strap, gig bag, instructional DVD, picks, and clip-on toner), is your passport to the world of bluegrass banjo.

Gold Tone Musician Jam Tunes! One of the most fun, educational, and rewarding parts of playing music is participating in jams. Every style of music has “the most popular jam tunes” and below we have collected what are, in our opinion, tunes that you as a player should learn. Make sure to learn the tunes below in the correct playing key and remember that some keys require the use of a capo. Also, before you learn the lead (melody), you can always join the jam by playing some rhythm backup. Make sure to use proper “jam etiquette”!

CC-50TRAn affordable open back traveler for kids and on the road use. Designed for the key of A (we’ve eliminated the first two frets), medium-gauge strings will easily tune to standard G-tuning. Includes gigbag.

TranjoThe Tranjo is the most unique traveler ever made. The patent-pending design by Sam Farris impressed the Gold Tone folks at a trade show and we licensed the design. The neck is completely detachable with the turn of one thumbscrew, and it fits in a suitcase. Best of all, it has a full scale and a great bluegrass tone for practicing. The tuners are located inside the banjo pot, directly beneath the banjo head, and are accessible from the back of the instrument. The body design fits comfortably in your lap and its weight is balanced. Since acquiring the license, we have now made the Tranjo affordable and a welcome addition to 5-string players’ collections.

TB-250Due to the tremendous response to our original travel banjo, the TB-250 was created to make a premier traveler banjo with many of the best features of a full size banjo. This banjo may also be tuned to the key of A without a capo. Due to its remarkable tone, this instrument can be played professionally. This piece is definitely one to pass down to future generations.

PluckyA true backpacker weighing in at only 2 lbs., the Plucky can be tuned in C or D. The neck width is similar to a full-size banjo for ease of fingering. It has low string action and plenty of volume. It’s perfect for the very young child, on the trail, or cuddling up with on the couch. Set up perfectly at our shop just like “the big boys.” Includes gigbag.

How do you tune a Mini Banjo? Shorter banjo necks require a higher tuning than normal banjos because of the shorter scale. The factory tuning is CGCEG (with medium strings), or the same as G-tuning on a normal banjo using a capo at the 5th fret. Although these banjos sound best in the recommended CGCEG tuning, the string gauges may be changed to 016, .034, .024, .020, .016 and the nut slots widened to achieve a standard G-tuning. This group of gauges aren’t usually sold as a set, however, you can buy individual guitar strings in these gauges.

BG-MiniThe BG-Mini is a professional banjo and a pint size version of our BG-250F. Many pros have used these in bluegrass performances to the delight of the audience. A rolled brass rod tone ring gives plenty of punch. For kids, this is the ultimate bluegrass banjo.

CC-MiniThe CC-Mini has features similar to our famous Cripple Creek series. This shorter scale banjo has a perfectly straight neck and low action to maintain consistent tuning. The open back design is light, portable and has great plunk for old-time, while the brass rod tone ring provides enough punch for bluegrass.

BG-10 (Bluegrass Model)The coupled strings are arranged in unison pairs for the 1st, 2nd & 5th strings and octaves on the 3rd and 4th. This instrument is easily played by any 5-string banjoist. The 9th string is tuned at the headstock and features a tunnel system under the fingerboard. The tone is loud and penetrating with added sustain. To reduce overtones we have used our extended three-ply tone rim, which eliminates the tone ring and its accompanying weight. Includes hardshell case.

Every 5-string player needs a Dojo. Incredible sustain and pleasing tone make Dojos great alternative instruments. These instruments are similar in sound to resonator guitars, but have banjo tuning. Our electric 5-strings have been a hit with musicians playing live. We have a sound chamber under the head creating a natural banjo tone. PC BanjolaThis top professional Banjola has many upgrades from our original highly successful Banjola. A wider body, pin-style bridge (instead of floating), maple/abalone body binding, multi-layered veneer on back of headstock, “rising sun” fingerboard inlay, maple heel cap, and a dual stereo-out transducer/magnetic pickup. This is a great stage instrument as the amplified tone is unique and sustaining, and it has a very “fat” tone because of the stereo pick up arrangement.

In 2006, Wayne received an e-mail from Pat Cloud. Pat had bought a Banjola at McCabes in California and was living in Japan working for Disney. Pat was extremely complimentary about his purchase. The playability and the sustain renewed his interest in the 5-string. He desired to record a whole album with the Banjola, his first in 20 years. He inquired about a pickup, and Wayne immediately thought of the possibility of a “Pat Cloud” model Banjola. After numerous e-mails and discussions between Pat and Wayne, the PC Banjola was born.

ES-BanjitarFollowing the success of the acoustic Gold Tone banjitar line, many requested a solid-body 6-string banjo. The ES-Banjitar, like a normal banjo, has extremely fast response compared to an electric. Hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides are accomplished with incredible ease. Even unplugged, the ES has an excellent acoustic tone due to the hollowed-out sound chamber within the body. The ES-Banjitar is great for country music or any style where banjo tone is desired.

BT-2000Acoustically, this is the best sounding 6-string banjo we have ever made (out of ten models). The 12” body accentuates the bass frequencies which are normally weak on any 6-string banjo. The rim provides maximum sound chamber reverberation. Double coordinator rods attach the neck securely so tuning remains consistent. This vintage design and slim neck make the BT-2000 a great alternative instrument for acoustic jams.

GT-500The GT-500 6-string for guitar players is traditionally styled with a maple rim, maple resonator, maple neck, and a radiused rosewood fingerboard. GT-1200 12-StringFor a unique sounding guitar-style instrument, the 12-string banjitar is overwhelming in tone and volume. This great rhythm instrument has a punchy sound, slim neck, and excellent string action. All specs are similar to our GT-500, and because of its solid construction and specially reinforced neck, it stays in excellent tune.

GT-750Due to the popularity of the original GT-500, the GT-750 was designed for optimal volume and tone. After numerous tone ring experiments, a unique bell brass ring was chosen for its pristine sound, increased acoustic volume, and excellent sustain. Our Banjitars are the most unique 6-string banjos on the market. Unlike other makers, our GT Banjitars use a normal guitar scale (25.5”) for a more familiar feel for guitarists.

IT-250FThis model was recommended by Andy Perkins (owner of Andybanjo.com in Faversham, England) and is based on a custom design that he has worked on for years. This is our loudest Irish tenor banjo!

IT-800Irish tenor players have often revered the tubaphone-style pot for great tone and lasting sustain. This 17-fret model, tuned to GDAE (an octave lower than a mandolin) has the power and volume needed for Celtic banjo leads and cuts through louder than most all other Irish Tenors! Includes hardshell case.

IT-800R resonator option available

IT-250The popularity of the Irish tenor is increasing dramatically and mandolinists now can include a 4-string banjo in their instrument collection. The IT-250 is designed for the plunky tone sought after in Irish music. The 17-fret neck uses heavier strings and is tuned to GDAE, an octave below a mandolin.

IT-250R resonator option available

Irish Tenor BanjosIrish tenor banjos, with 17 frets, are tuned one octave lower than a mandolin and most often used with a pick to play the melody line. They are tuned GDAE, and with a scale length of 19 3/4”. We suggest using string gauges, .040w, .030w, .020, .016.

MBT+Our metal body tenor is indeed a unique 4-string only made by Gold Tone. The metal body scale allows for “Chicago tuning” (DGBE) or can be tuned to fifths (CGDA)—the normal tuning for a tenor guitar. It is loud and has a distinct percussive tone.

TG-10The TG-10 is an affordable tenor guitar, but it still has low string action and great tone. The body is made of laminated wood. It has a bolt-on neck for easy neck resets and is set up exactly like its big brother, the TG-18. This is the perfect instrument for guitarists wanting to flirt with the 4-string style. Includes gig bag.

Tenors are rapidly increasing in popularity and are great as alternative instruments for guitarists or tenor banjo players. Gold Tone is continually looking for new ways to reinvent musical products in a respectful and in-novative way to better meet musicians’ wants and needs. Here are some of the contributions we

have pioneered over the years making Gold Tone what we are today.

GM-110The unique body style is patented by Rigel® Mandolins and is licensed to Gold Tone. All solid wood construction packs a punch and tone similar to the domestic Rigels®

from Vermont. The GM-110 also has a specially designed transducer pickup sandwiched in the bridge for amplified applications.

GM-A+Pete Langdell, founder and builder of Rigel® Mandolin Company has collaborated with us to offer one of Rigel’s most sought after mandolins, the A+ model. Mr. Langdell provided bracing patterns, pickup locations, wood type, carving specifications and all other details to closely duplicate the original Rigel. Now this very affordable replica will carry on the traditional great tone and playability of Mr. Langdell’s accomplishments and contribution to mandolin construction. Includes a radiused fingerboard and internal mounted piezo pickup.

Rigel Mandolin founder Pete Langdell first started building mandolins in the 1960s, and he established his company, Rigel (named for a star in the Orion constellation), in the 1980s. Over the years, he formulated a totally radical process of attacking mandolin building. Langdell focused on the sound and created a better process to build mandolins. His unwavering standards and attention to detail demanded that Rigel instruments come with the finest in hand-rubbed lacquer finish, quality tuners, an efficient tailpiece, and a comfortable and exacting fingerboard. For the plugged-in player, it was critical that the electronics be efficient and built-in from the inside out.

GM-70+The GM-70+ is a high-quality F-style mandolin in a very reasonable price range. The tone, playability and workmanship equals or surpasses other Pacific Rim-made mandolins. Plus model upgrades for 2011 include a radiused fingerboard and cast brass tailpiece. A carved solid spruce top and maple back allow for a strong and penetrating tone. The machine heads have been upgraded to the popular top-gear style for more stable and accurate tuning. The GM-70+ also features a scooped fingerboard, two-way adjustable truss rod, and is available as a left-handed model.

GM-55AOur new solid top GM-55A may be the best sounding A-style mandolin you’ve heard. The sound quality is mainly due to a unique oil finish that is very protective yet allows the instrument to vibrate freely compared to instruments with thicker lacquer or polyurethane finishes. The antique appearance is achieved by hand application of the oil finish in a thin layer producing a look that’s quite different from a satin or gloss finish. Try playing a GM-55A and see for yourself how the finish provides surprising volume and tone.

GM-50This solid top A-style mandolin is a replica of a famous vintage mandolin. The curly maple back helps promote consistent volume. Each GM-50 undergoes a complete professional setup in the Gold Tone Factory in Florida. To increase tone, we sand the bridge feet for a perfect fit with the arched top. To assure the best playability, we level, crown and polish frets, oil the fingerboard, adjust slots in the nut and bridge, and electronically intonate the bridge. This attention to detail assures every GM-50 of excellent tone and the lowest possible string action.

GME-4This solid body 4-string electric mandolin is great for Texas swing, folk, jazz, and even rock n’ roll. The maple radiused fingerboard plays very quickly. The stacked humbucker is extremely quiet for recording and includes tone and volume controls.

OM-800+ (Octave Mandolin)The Octave Mandolin is tuned one octave lower than a standard mandolin. Octave mandolins are becoming increasingly popular as the main alternative instrument for mandolinists. Redesigned for 2011, the OM-800+ includes a longer 22 1/2” scale (commonly used by private makers in Ireland) and an arched top, which makes it structurally stronger. Another improvement is a compound radiused fingerboard preferred by many for playing speedy licks. Of utmost importance on any octave mandolin is the complicated setup required for low action without buzz. Gold Tone’s luthiers have perfected this procedure.

MB-850+ (Mandolin Banjo)Compared to a normal mandolin, our mando banjo is louder and has the quick response typical of a banjo body. The MB-850+ is a new design for 2011 featuring an 11” body compared to our original 8”. This dramatically improves volume and bass response. The brass tone ring projects loud volume and our setup compares to that of professional mandolins.

MandolaThe Mandola, often used in Irish traditional music, is to the mandolin what the viola is to the violin. The four double courses of strings are tuned in fifths to CGDA, which is a fifth lower than a mandolin. Also, many altered tunings can be used. Our Mandola features an authentic Celtic tone and has low string action, and the cast tailpiece is stronger and thicker than sheet metal tailpieces, providing more sustain. This traditionally shaped and finished Mandola would be a welcome alternative instrument to mandolinists. Includes hardshell case.

BZ-500 BouzoukiThe Irish Bouzouki (sometimes called a cittern) is a unique form of an octave mandolin adopted into and adapted for Irish and other forms of European traditional music from the late 1960s onward. GM-6The GM-6 is designed for guitarists and is tuned one octave higher than a guitar, EADGBE. It can provide the chop rhythm for bluegrass or country music without learning mandolin. A competitor offers a similar mando-guitar selling for more than $2,000 and has a flat and more narrow fingerboard. The radiused fingerboard and wider neck allows for easier fingering. String action is super low and lead lines may be played very rapidly. This is a must instrument for guitarists in bluegrass jams and lends itself well in recording applications.

The GRS and GRE metal body guitars Distinguish themselves from the crowd by offering the traditional 12-fret designs, ideal for best tone. The guitar bodies were designed by the legendary Paul Beard and use a biscuit-style cone for optimal tone. The GRS is a full body instrument for brilliant acoustic volume; the GRE is constructed around a thinner body design for a more subtle acoustic tone that really shines when amplified.

The guitars feature traditional nickel plating and the slim neck profile allow quick fingering on upper frets. The GRS and GRE were favorably reviewed by Acoustic Guitar magazine and were the recommended steel body guitars to own in their price range. The guitars are professionally set up at the Gold Tone shop for optimum playability ideal for conventional playing as well as bottleneck slide playing. The coverplate also features a removable palm rest for simple and easy adjustments.

During the last 10 years, our SM and LM Weissenborns have helped revive this hollow-neck instrument as musicians have discovered this wonderful slide tone. Although the SM and LM are close copies of the originals, our new Style 4 Weissenborn may be the most authentic replica ever made.

Richard Barnes, renowned luthier from Claremont, California, is a leading authority on the construction and repair for all vintage Weissenborns. Barnes teamed up with our designers, and our new Style 4 is the result of his research on every possible specification. Since the native Hawaiian Koa wood is in near depletion, this Style 4 is constructed with its closest cousin: the Australian blackwood. The wood grain, appearance and tone are remarkably similar.

“What kind of Dobro is that? It’s a Weissenborn. What’s that? Weissenborns eat Dobros for lunch!”Such was David Lindley’s appraisal of these unconventional old Hawaiian guitars with their raised strings, flush frets and hollow necks gracefully flowing from the body. These beauties have a distinctive woody sound, astounding volume, sweet sustain, and deep, warm tone. The Weissenborn may appear to be the platypus of guitars to the uninitiated, but it’s an instrument brilliantly and specifically conceived for Hawaiian playing. These hollow-necks are enjoying a renaissance with players nearly 60 years after the last one was made. Weissenborns might have languished in obscurity if not for Lindley (the king of oddball instruments and a dobro lover), Ry Cooder, John Fahey, Steve Fishell, and singer-songwriter Ben Harper. Dobro and steel players Mike Auldridge, Bob Brozman, Cindy Cashdollar, Jerry Douglas, John Ely, Greg Leisz and Sally Van Meter have added them to their arsenal. “Whenever you take one of these things into the studio, people always say, ‘Wow! What an amazing instrument.” says Greg Leisz. “Engineers flip out every time.”Reprinted from Acoustic Guitar Magazine April 1996. Used by permission.

Lap Dulcimer

Gold Tone enters the dulcimer world. Owner Robyn Rogers, a gifted Appalachian dulcimer player, has always wanted to include a dulcimer in our catalog of folk instruments. We did not want to replicate an existing model and instead wanted to create something unique. Our lap-style Weissenborn guitars are some of the most unique sounding hollow body instruments in the acoustic world, so it was natural for us to eventually try a plucked-style dulcimer fingerboard and tuning using this body type, thus the “Dulciborn” was born!Since the dulcimer uses light gauge strings, we were able to reduce the bracing size and use a very responsive Sitka spruce top. Compared to a typical cherry wood or mahogany hourglass shape dulcimer, the Dulciborn is louder, has better bass response, and strings attached to the bridge pins actually provide the top with greater energy and vibration. The maple binding, gold hardware, and highly figured rosewood laminate back and sides truly sets this instrument apart. We have included an under-the-saddle pickup for amplification, which may be used with our popular ABS-2 preamp stomp box to provide a stronger signal to the amp for an enriched tone. We kept many of the traditional appointments, like a scalloped fingerboard, 25" scale, bone nut and saddle, and traditional fret board spacing. So, even if you already own an Appalachian dulcimer, you need a Dulciborn. It is played exactly like conventional dulcimers, but with a great new look and full-bodied tone.

Wayne’s WorldI hear it is impossible to achieve

perfect intontation in fretted instruments. Is this true?

This is very true! Due to the physics of a banjo or any fretted instrument, per-fect tuning from the nut to the last fret is nearly impossible. Simply explained, this is because different gauge strings are used and the spacing between frets is the same for each string. What is needed is a perfect set-up and with low action, properly set nut and bridge, and correct string gauges to minimize tuning problems

Tell me more about the Banjitar (6-string banjo guitar). Is it getting

popular?

Gold Tone was the very first instrument maker to offer an affordable 6-string banjo for guitar players. We now have seven different models and they are played worldwide by many popular artists. A unique feature of banjitars is that they have an extremely quick response. That means that slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs are actu-ally faster than on an acoustic guitar. They allow the guitarist to produce a banjo-like tone without learning the 5-string. I don’t consider the 6-string banjitar a bluegrass instrument, but

for folk, blues, country, open tunings, and both flat pick and finger picking it is very cool. By the way, Django Re-inhardt’s first pro instrument was the 6-string banjo!

How many employees are there at Gold Tone and what do they do?

Our shop, in Titusville Fla., employs 12 people. On the floor we have 5 luthiers/assemblers, 4 people in the office, and 3 working in shipping. My wife, Robyn, inspects every instrument and passes it to her brother Brian for packing. My daughter Mandy, who graduated from UF (Go Gators!) with a degree in ad-vertising, works in

Baritone Guitar

The GBG, our baritone acoustic guitar, has a scale length of 29 1/16" and tunes a fifth lower (ADGCEA) or sometimes a fourth lower (BEADF♯B) than a standard guitar. Numerous finger-style guitarists have used these on recordings as it is a superb accompaniment for singers with a lower range. It uses much heavier gauge strings to compensate for the lower tuning so that the string tension is similar to a standard dreadnaught acoustic guitar.

The GBG’s internal bracing structure is specifically designed for excellent volume and projection. The top is select grade solid Sitka spruce and the mahogany back and sides were chosen for its deep bass response. The radiused ebony fingerboard is perfectly matched to a slightly larger ebony bridge with a genuine bone saddle. The slim line neck contour is only two millimeters thicker at the12th fret than the 2nd fret allowing for incredible playability up the neck.

This guitar features a bolt-on neck design so that future neck adjustments can be done with ease. There are two bolts in the heel of the neck as well as two bolts attaching the fingerboard to the body, which differs from most bolt-on neck guitars that have glued-on fingerboards. No other baritones in this price range have this unique feature, which will assure low string action with the proper saddle height and break angle for exceptional tone for many years to come. The GBG’s smooth cutaway allows easy access to high frets and includes a dual pickup system for live amplification. The built in preamp has blending capabilities for the condenser mic and transducer pickup.

How big is Gold Tone and how many instruments do you build and

ship worldwide?

I don’t know for certain, but I assume Deering or Gold Tone is the world’s biggest supplier of banjos. I predict we are very equal in numbers. We ship out between 600 to 800 instruments per month: about 20 percent to foreign dealers, 30 percent to internet dealers

and the 50 percent to our favorite mom-and-pop shops. We now sell over 130 different models of instruments!

How does an artist become a Gold Tone endorsee?

Gold Tone has an incredible number of professional endorsees. Part of this is due to the alternative instruments we offer as recording artists are always looking for new sounds. Also, our play-ability and sound quality cannot be beat for the dollar. Tommy Sivert, our sales manager and instrument spe-cialist also leads our artist relations program helping artists find the right instrument and setup for their needs. If you are a full time professional mu-

sician, feel free to contact Tommy for consideration.

Gold Tone has such a unique catalog of instruments. How do you

think them up?

Some instruments, like the banjola and cello banjo, are recreations of vintage instruments. Some ideas come from artists like Bela Fleck mentioning how cool it would be to play a 10-string ban-jo. Some are my creations that come to me in the middle of the night. Inciden-tally , we do have a room of “failures” – instruments we thought up, tried out and decided NO WAY!

Instrument Modifications & Set up

Install graphite or wood neck to existing pot assembly- Our shop has a dedicated heel-cuting jig designed to perfectly fit necks. Includes professional setup.Lefty Option- Appoximately 75% of our instruments are available in left handed modelsFingerboard Scoop- Popular on openback banjos, a fingerboard scoop at the end of the neck allows for proper right hand clawhammer technique.Install D-Tuners (Schaller)- We stock Schaller D-tuners. The Keith tuners are obtainable directly from Bill Keith, and if you supply we would be happy to install. Refretting - If played often enough, all instruments will eventually need new frets, especially in the most used playing positions. Fret alloy must be softer than the string or you would wear out strings immediately, so it’s perfectly normal to wear out frets. Often frets may be dressed (leveled and crowned) once or twice before replacing. This procedure is best left to our experts, as well as dressed fret lead to good tone and accurate intonation.

Install or upgrade to any tone ring- This is one of our most requested modifications. It is critical to make sure the tone ring fits the rim perfectly. It is nearly impossible to exchange a tone ring without modification to the rim.

Install or replace banjo head- Different head types and materials will dramatically affect your banjo’s tone. See our available head options in the parts section. Install GTS mounted calfskin head- Our GTS genuine calfskin heads are prestretched and mounted on an aluminum rim. Available in sizes 10 15/16”, 11”, 12”Install GTS unmounted calfskin head- This lost art of tucking a head is performed often in our shop. We can restore your banjo pot to its original condition by tucking a calfskin head of any size.

Install pickup- We have a variety of accoustic and electric pickup options available ranging from simple transducers, magnetic pickups, and attachable microphones.

Install Capo Spikes- The common 5th string capo spike positions for bluegrass banjo are at 7, 9, & 10 (keys A, B, & C) and at 7 (Key A or D) for old time banjo. Install Shubb 5th string sliding capo- These permanent capos are available in both a long and short model.Restringing and Restoring setup to factory specifications- This includes all adjustments, fret dressing, oiling of the fingerboard, possible bridge replacement, and new stringsFull disassembly, cleaning, restringing, and detailed factory setup- With the process we carefully and systematically restore and set up your instrument as close to its original specifications as possible. Your banjo will sound and play at it’s absolute best. Gold plating option- Upgrade your banjo with gold-plated hardware. Note: gold plating is softer than chrome or nickel and is more likely to tarnish and deteriorate overtime due to exposure to humidity and body oils.

All instruments shipped to Gold Tone require a Return Authorization Number (RA#). Please call us at (321) 264-1970 to make shipping arrangements.

Gold Tone’s “Made in USA” carbon graphite necks are technology’s answer to nature’s imperfections. The graphite composition is more consistent than wood fibers and promotes tone enhancement. The fingerboard is perfectly level allowing for the lowest possible string action and will easily outlive all other wood necks. Professionals are favoring the graphite necks over traditional wood necks on their premium and/or vintage pot assembly because of their tone improvements, reliability, and durability. The most accurate way to install a graphite neck (or any other neck for that matter) is to send your banjo body to Gold Tone for an expert neck attachment. We would be glad to cut the heel to your diagram or specifications and send it back to you, but it is important to remember that the chances of it fitting perfectly are somewhat low. The heel cut, although made accurately to your specs, may need to be re-cut upon installation with the appreciation of string tension. This is a normal phenomenon, so we cannot guarantee a perfect fit unless installed at the Gold Tone factory. Gold Tone has the specialized neck shaping tooling to do this quickly, accurately, and affordably.

5 Reasons Why Your Next Banjo Neck

Should Be Graphite!1. Improves the tone on any banjo. Graphite composition is much more consistent than wood fibers and ac tua l l y p romotes tone enhancement.

2. Graphite is resistent to temperature and humidity changes. Incredible neck stability in any climate or weather.

3. Fingerboard levelness is perfect, not a hint of twist! Provides lowest action possible without fret buzz on any string.

4. Smooth glide finish provides effortless left hand motion as you move up and down the neck. Smooth slides and pull-offs on the graphite fingerboard.

5. Graphite has strength! It allows for a thinner neck profile without sacrificing any neck strength.

The Old Tone graphite neck was designed by Wayne Rogers. It has the same features found on vintage style open back banjos (No valute, S-shaped fingerboard scoop, star-style inlay, pointed heel, and a 1 ¼” nut measurement). The headstock is reminiscent of the vintage Coles. Also available with a 12” to 16” compound radius fingerboard.

Bluegrass Flathead Tone Rings

For more than a year we experimented with bronze al loys. The pre-war tone ring from made by Gibson in the early 1900s (the Holy Grail of the bluegrass tone) was actually at least three different bronze alloy formulas, depending upon the year of manufacture. We discovered these three alloys, had tone rings made with each formula, and chose the bronze alloy content with the most penetrating tone. After extensive testing we found the RB 12 tone ring shape to be superior. The top edge is rounded, compared to the typical sharp angle on the common flathead ring. This edge adds more contact area for vibration transference and actually allows the head to be tuned tighter if desired. The original tone ring and ours look and sound amazing similar.

The clear-head is similar in tone to a bottom frosted head only more open sounding, with greater sustain and a more pronounced bass response.

The GTS genuine skin head is most commonly used on clawhammer banjos. It’s mellow tone is subtle and incredibly warm. Its vintage appeal is unmatched by any substitute.

The Fiberskyn® head is a more consistent alternative to genuine skin for clawhammer banjo. Known for its warm, full tones, resonance, and sustain.

The Renaissance® head is louder and brighter than a Fiberskyn® head and is the commonly preferred on clawhammer banjos. It has a great plunky tone.

New coverplate system! The new Gold Tone/Beard resonator coverplate design with a removable palm rest is a revolutionary concept for making final and accurate adjustments to any of our instruments with coverplates. Systems lacking our new coverplate require removal of the coverplate and the strings in order to adjust string action or spacing, break angle, or to replace the saddle. Our removable palm rest feature makes fine tuning and adjusting your resonator easier and more efficient. In addition, the palm rest may be “height adjusted” by placing shims between the plate and the palm rest providing a custom height for your right-hand technique.

The WBM was developed exclusively for Weissenborns by Gold Tone. Since the str ing spacing is wider on a Weissenborn than on a conventional guitar, we’ve developed a magnetic humbucker pickup with proper spacing, which providesequal volume for each string. The mahogany pickup encasement looks as good as it sounds!

The Triad pickup, formally licensed to the Dean Markley Company (Trilogy Pickup), was invented and patented by Wayne Rogers. It incorporates magnetic, transducer, and microphone sensors with volume adjustments for each, and a master volume control. You can make infinite tone adjustments. Gold Tone installs this superior pickup at a fraction of the retail price.

After extensive testing, we have chosen this superior pickup for installation in our mandolins (and on our GM-6). Developed primarily for mandolin, this transducer pickup works great on many wood bodied instruments. It

can be mounted to the outside surface of the instrument with a removable adhesive, or we can permanently mount it inside. The output jack can be permanently installed as an end pin or on a side mount jack holder.

The ABS-2 acoustic preamp stompbox is an external source that increases the output signal of your pickup before being plugged into an amplifier. It is recommended with any passive-style pickup and includes volume, bass, mid, treble, and a phase control. It can be used as a normal floor pedal or be attached to oneself with a belt clip for portable use.

The Gigpro is a single-channel belt-clip preamp that will work with most pickups. It is ideal to be used with the LR Baggs Radius pickup and has everything necessary to get the best possible sound from that pickup. The two-band EQ and variable low cut is amazingly flexible and intuitive to use. Lightweight, compact, and belt-clip ready: Ideal for wireless situations.

The Gold Tone Hot Dots are a pair of stick-on transducer pickups that efficiently amplify wood bodied stringed instruments. The advantage of having two transducers instead of one is that they can be placed in two different areas to broaden the tonal capture. The pickup system sounds great on any instrument ranging from small mandolins to ukuleles to ban-jolas.

The Beard Fishman biscuit pickup is the ideal transducer for biscuit-style resophonic guitars. An outboard preamp is recommended in combination with this pickup to maximize its full tonal capabilities.

These resonator pickups, designed by Paul Beard and sold through Fishman, are transducer-style pickups that attach to the cone of a resonator guitar. There are two versions: Active and Passive. In the passive model, the transducer is wired directly to a ¼” output jack. The signal must then go through a preamp (such as our ABS-2) before being plugged into a powered amplifier. In the active model, a 9-volt battery powers a preamp circuit board that is integrated into the output jack, allowing you to plug directly into your sound system of choice. It is essential that these pickups be installed professionally.

ABS Banjo/Resonator Guitar Dynamic

Microphone

Parts: PickupsAdvanced Banjo/Resonator Guitar Microphone System

Why a cardoid dynamic microphone? Of the microphones we have tested, we found that the cardoid cartridge provided superior accuracy and purity of tone, with less feedback, and as a bonus did not require phantom power. The dynamic mic of choice for on-stage use has always been the Shure SM-57. How does the ABS compare? TheABS system has a very similar frequency response, however, banjo and resonator players can run into problems with diminished volume when they play up the neck. To compensate, we increased the sensitivity at the high end to make sure that you get a brilliant response throughout the entire range of your instrument. What cables are needed? Two ¼” guitar cables are all you need. One running from the mic to the preamp, and the other from the preamp to the ampifier or PA. You may find that a 90 o ¼” angled jack may be more convient to loop through your instrument strap on both banjos and resonator guitars. How much of a boost does the ABS-2 floor box pedal allow for? If using a smaller watt amplifier (or if you want to match the gain of other inputs in your sound system) the pre-amp pedal will deliver 30% extra gain. Also, the preamp can be set to boost lead breaks by simply depressing the footswitch. How long does it take to attach the mic to the instrument?Using our secure design takes seconds to attach to the brackets. Only one thumb screw needs to be tightened. Can this mic be mounted on any style of banjo or resonator guitar? In almost every case, the answer is “yes.” The mounting bracket attaches to the J-hooks. The adjustable bracket will fit hook spacing from 1¼” to 2¾”. On resonator guitars it should fit all 6-string tailpieces. What if I accidently bump the mic while playing? The ABS has rubber pads on the mounting bracket and an isolated rubber-mounted mic cartridge acting as a shock mount to prevent extraneous noises. Can a wireless system be used with the ABS? Yes, our dynamic microphone can easily be used without modification.Should I expect to run into feedback issues? The ABS system has been tested in many live sound applications and passed successfully. The player should always remember to avoid pointing the mic directly into a monitor or speaker.

Frequently Asked ABS Questions

The ABS system is essential equipment for the performing banjoist or resonator player. It features an infinitely adjustable cardioid dynamic microphone to the end of a small goose-neck cable for optimal sound capture. The ABS is shock mounted to prevent the intro-duction of extraneous vibrations. The ABS system includes a floorbox-type preamp, the ABS-2, which, when activated will increase gain (volume) to punch out lead breaks. The ABS pedal comes with a 9-volt battery. For those who prefer a more constant power source, an AC adapter is available (ABS-ADT). Connection to the sound system is accomplished with a standard ¼” male guitar cable. Two ¼” guitar cables are required for connection with pre-amp and amplifier. The ABS comes in a hard plastic carrying case with fitted foam inserts for the microphone and footswitch pedal.

The ABS Includes:

Parts: Pickups

What’s the difference? The SMP and the SMP+ are exactly the same pickup only with different mounting hardware and wiring requirements to better meet the player’s need.

The SMP, designed by Gold Tone, is our all-time bestselling accessory. Widely used by professionals, it has a thick and full tone and does not require a preamp. Because it is magnetic, it is extremely feedback resistant compared to transducer-style pickups. Once installed between the coordinator rod and the banjo head, you can slide it between neck and bridge positions for different tonal qualities (closer to the bridge will increase the treble response; closer to the neck will increase the bass response).

Tip: Because the typical sound of a magnetic pickup tends to be warm and full bodied, you may find that the pickup can be quite bass-y for a traditional banjo sound. We find that the pickup sounds incredibly more like an acoustic banjo if you turn the majority of the bass or low end down on your amplifier.

SMP

SMP+Our newly designed SMP+ conveniently connects to both single and dual coordinator rod setups and easily slides toward the neck or the bridge to adjust tonality. The pickup bracket is designed to place the pickup any distance from the banjo head. The SMP+ does not require soldering and instead has quick connect cables. This is an advantage over the standard SMP because it avoids unnecessary modifications to the rim. This pickup is hassle free, will not change your banjo’s acoustic tone, and sounds great plugged in.

The SMP pickup has been installed in thousands of our banjo and banjitar models. Its humbucker design provides a realistic banjo tone, deep bass response, and does not require a preamp. The pickup itself attaches to a coordinator rod using a wooden mounting block, and the flush mount output jack attaches securely into the banjo rim.

Slinger Cradle StrapDesigned by Ric Scoles and made in USA, this revolutionary sling supports the banjo like a normal strap but removes easily for storage in a case. A special angle sewed into the strap actually pulls the banjo toward the body. The Slinger only works on resonator banjos. It is especially useful for multiple banjo changes on stage. We have two versions: Standard basic black (leather/cloth) & Deluxe padded black (all leather).

Accessories: StrapsLeather cradle banjo strapsThis banjo cradle strap provides the best support, is the most convenient, and the safest to use on your banjo. It fully supports the pot without stressing the hooks like most other straps. The deluxe model (DLX) features double layered soft leather which is comfortable on the shoulder. The LS is made of top grain soft leather. This strap will not fit our Cripple Creek models.

CS Cloth Strap for banjoSpecially designed cloth with leather tabs that fit under bracket hooks. These are superior to straps wtih metal hooks as they will not scratch the banjo. Choose from black or brown.

Ideal on our Cripple Creek models.

The Ultimate Banjo MuteThis little beauty works like a charm! Won’t vibrate loose Adjustable for all bridge widths Fits 4-, 5- and 6-string banjos Doesn’t hinder right-hand playing Lacquered brass As easy to put on as it is to take off

BGT Bluegrass TunerThe BGT tuner was designed specifically for banjos. The G and D note needle wavers commonly found on other tuners are eliminated with special circuitry. Guitar, banjo, mandolin, and chromatic settings. Includes external contact mic, stand, and LED indicators for places with low lighting. The BGT is the best handheld tuner for banjos as well as other bluegrass instruments.

Iucci Banjo MuteWhile visiting Jim Bowman’s vintage banjo collection, Wayne came upon a mute very similar to the Ultimate Banjo Mute, except better. In 1924, Mr. Iucci patented a tenor banjo mute that fits on the bridge under the strings. This mute slides on easily and has more weight resulting in decreased volume. Now you can enjoy the quiet tone of your banjo for unlimited practice.

What’s so different about the CCT tuner from other clip-on tuners? 1) 360 degree adjustment, which means you can put it on the headstock (front or back), on the banjo rim, on any acoustic instrument in any location and the display can be adjusted to a perfect upright viewing angle2) Chromatic, guitar, banjo, violin/mandolin, and soprano ukelele settings. This is the only tuner with a banjo setting, which is especially important for beginning banjoists3) Large display shows note and changes color when a string is in tune. Guitar, violin/mandolin, soprano ukelele and banjo settings display the string number being played4) Only 440 hz, so there’s no chance of pushing a wrong button and tuning to a higher or lower pitch. In fact, the CCT only has one button. Plus, it stays on chosen setting when turned on and off5) Automatic shut-off after two minutes of non use6) Small and compact design7) Easy to use with simple instructions written by Wayne. He explains things such as how string dampening affects tuning and why you might get the occasional inaccurate readings (like from a badly worn string)!

CCT Clip-on Tuner “OK, I know. There’s dozens of different tuners available for your selection. I use them myself, but I’ve never been completely satisfied. So my design includes specs below not found on any other clip-on.”

Banjo CaposSomewhere along the way, whether you play with other musicians or you enjoy playing along to your favorite albums, you will eventually come across the need for a capo to make quick tuning changes. The Shubb is our choice for an easy-to-use capo that helps you stay in tune. It has an adjustable screw to compress the strings evenly for every banjo neck thickness. The short 5th string must also be capoed when changing keys and you can do this with a Shubb sliding capo. These capos come in two lengths, the shorter being the most popular. You can also have railroad spikes professionally installed by Gold Tone.

The CBS is specifically designed for resonator and openback banjos to provide sturdy support both side-to-side & front-to-back. This stand is different from the typical guitar stand in that it supports a heavy resonator banjo by the body/rim keeping stress off the resonator. No other stand accomplishes this, preserving the integrity of the thinner resonator wood and its hardware. Best of all, it collapses for easy transport from your home to the stage.
