Proven expertise at home and abroad:Pembrokeshire College has built a strong reputation for delivering expert training at home and abroad. The breadth and scope of our training surpasses any other training company in Pembrokeshire. At present there are many funded/semi-funded programmes, as well as our own bespoke training to select from. This brochure, alongside our business services website, will help you as an employer or employee to decide which training is most suited to your needs and help you identify and explore any funding opportunities which may be of benefit to you.

Deciding which course: The success of the Pembrokeshire College brand means that our funding department is regularly successful in tendering for European funding for business training. The Skills for Industry is one such project designed to offer local SMEs (small and medium enterprises) accredited training within the majority of Pembrokeshire’s business sectors, turn to page 16 for further information. If you work, or are contracted, within the energy sector there is specific funding available offering up to 80 per cent subsidised training, see page 17. Whichever project satisfies your training needs, your business will benefit from expert training at an affordable price or, in some instances, completely free of charge.

Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships for 16+ have made a resurgence over the past 3 years becoming a recognised alternative route to university. The Welsh Government has increased the number of funded places for apprenticeships across various sectors and this is likely to continue to rise. Unemployment and adult redundancy are currently at an all time high. This, alongside a competitive job market, means many adults are now looking to re-train. Each year tens of thousands of adults gain the skills and qualifications they need to progress and increase their earning power while working.

For businesses there are many benefits. Apprenticeships deliver real returns to your bottom line, helping improve productivity and company competitiveness. Training apprentices can also be more cost effective than hiring skilled staff, leading to lower overall training and recruitment costs, see pages 4 and 5.

Adding value through bespoke training for business: Sometimes you may require a tailored, one-to-one, approach to identify individual training needs. In this situation our consultants will design bespoke courses that are tailored to your training needs and are conveniently delivered either in the workplace or at one of the College’s campuses. Post training evaluation and ongoing support offers further added value to your workforce training and development. Read more on pages 6, 7 and 8.

Centre of Excellence:In 2011 The National Skills Academy named the College as a Centre for Excellence for the process industries - the only college in Wales to receive this accolade.

We can help take the pain away from recruiting:Not only can we fulfil your training needs, we can also offer a free recruitment service. As part of the government’s flagship initiative - The Work Programme, we can support and prepare relevant candidates with a wide variety of experience and skills ready for you to recruit. ApprenticeshipsTrain your staff and reap the rewardsRecognised as the proven way to train your staff, enrol your existing employees onto an apprenticeship programme and they will benefit from valuable learning and development opportunities at no cost to your business. As an experienced apprenticeship provider, we will work with you to ensure the needs of both your business and the individual are met. Pembrokeshire College is currently leading a consortium comprising of Pembrokeshire College, Coleg Sir Gar, PRP Training, The Prince’s Trust, Cymru Care Training Ltd and Safe Haven Training Ltd. We are working collaboratively to offer businesses in west Wales a standardised approach to apprenticeship opportunities.

More reasons to train your staffTrained employees feel more valued and motivated, thus reducing staff turnover. Through advanced training they could make your business more effective, productive and competitive. Apprentices can bring new ideas and innovation to your business keeping you ahead of the competition. Your employees will be learning new skills and techniques which could have an immediate impact on your bottom line.

What is an apprenticeship?Apprenticeships are a mix of classroom and practical competence designed to improve productivity by developing skills and knowledge directly related to your business. Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Specially designed to support employees, the apprenticeship programme helps to raise their level of competency and performance to a high standard enabling them to effectively fulfil their role within your business. To be eligible for the programme employees will need to be at least 16 years old, employed for at least 16 hours per week and earning the minimum wage.

Are there any costs involved? An apprentice will receive their training at no cost to your business. You are however responsible for the salary of your apprentice which should reflect their age and experience. You will also be required to allow the employee time to be assessed in the workplace on a monthly basis and time to attend college for specific occupational routes.

Comment:“We have proof that Pembrokeshire College has the best Chevron operators apprenticeship scheme in the world,” Ed Tomp, Chevron Operations Manager, (2009)

Pembrokeshire College’s specialist training unit Business Central, is a ‘one-stop shop’ providing extensive commercial training programmes for employers both locally and internationally - utilising its own staff, skills and experience. Vocational training has long been a major part of the College’s work. Over the past 50 years we have developed an extensive pool of knowledge across a range of occupational sectors recognising the importance of flexibility and responding to the training needs of industry and commerce. Pembrokeshire College’s Business Central team can offer a comprehensive range of regular short courses such as Health and Safety and First Aid, or specialist bespoke training delivered either at Pembrokeshire College or on your own business premises. We provide a FREE training needs analysis which will give you an overview of the skills, talent and capabilities of your organisation as well as uncovering any areas for development.

Training needs assessmentOur experienced and knowledgeable assessors will be able to recommend exactly which type of training you would require based on your business, time-scale and budget requirements. Throughout the process we will work with you to create an individual training course or a fully bespoke training programme. At this point, it may become clear that you require further consultation to achieve your strategic business aims. If this is the case, then we offer a full consultancy process in which funding options are explored and ongoing support/development is implemented to guide your business to its goals. An individual training course or bespoke training programme can be delivered in a range of formats..Totally bespoke We will work with you to create a totally bespoke course or package of courses. The development of a bespoke course involves a content development consultation between you and the course tutor, in which you will be able to specify the exact needs and knowledge levels of your team. The course tutor will then dedicate time to course development. Due to the nature of this process, it would be difficult to provide a quote for any bespoke training before this point of the development process, but an average price for course development is approximately £250 - £800.

Client comment: “I have worked with Pembrokeshire College for a number of years and have been supported by an assessor to undertake my Level 4 in Health and Social Care. The assessor has also supported the staff to achieve their Level 2 and 3, she has been reliable, professional and has encouraged and supported the candidates according to their needs.

“The assessor has met the candidates in all the community homes, depending on where they work, and has catered for the unsocial hours in their assessments. We are looking to enrol more candidates in the future and will be doing this with Business Central at Pembrokeshire College because we are confident they will provide a quality service. Previously Perthyn had sought support from other providers and candidates had not completed their qualifications within the time frame but Business Central’s training have supported us with this.” Wayne Goss, Perthyn Residential Home

Are you aware of how many of your employees are struggling with reading, writing, maths or basic computing? This could be affecting your business.

One in five adults in the UK lack confidence in reading, writing, numeracy and with IT technology. This is a sensitive issue and is often concealed by the individual. New technology and working practices demand flexible, multi-skilled staff who can adapt to this changing environment.

Problems such as lack of initiative or problem-solving skills, unwillingness to accept changes or to go for promotion, often result from an underlying lack of confidence due to difficulties with essential skills. Poor skills hamper the growth and sustainability of businesses and affect the bottom line. It is estimated that poor essential skills currently cost the Welsh economy £588 million per year and consequently the Welsh Government has identified the need to improve these skills as a major priority.

Essential Skills training in the workplace builds these skills and improves the confidence and performance of the workforce. Your business can benefit from having people who are better skilled and who are far more committed to their jobs.

The College will come to you and tailor training to your needs. Bespoke training in Literacy, Numeracy and IT will be directly related to the organisation and to the employee(s). It will develop your workforce through:

• improved team work and customer service • improved quality control • increased accuracy, less wastage • increased confidence • greater flexibility for effective multi-skilling

Courses can be held at your workplace or at a College site on a day and time that is convenient to you.

Putting opportunity in your hand...The mCommunity project has piloted the use of mobile technology as a means to engage with local businesses to increase awareness and trial the use of digital learning. The project is led by the mCommunity team at Pembrokeshire College working in collaboration with Gower College Swansea and software developers based at the Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG) in Ireland.

Small businesses across Pembrokeshire including Pembrokeshire Paragliding, The Fourcroft Hotel, The Cleddau Bridge Hotel, Celtic Quest & Kayak King are using the latest tablet devices to create and research online productivity and learning resources to meet business requirements. Business owners are encouraged to create their own resources through the tablet with the support of the mCommunity team to, for example, provide access to training preparation guidelines and advice for staff or participants undertaking a specific course.

These resources are then packaged into an online course and delivered via the mCommunity app on the mobile device. Businesses can also monitor progress towards targets and offer additional resources, including links to relevant YouTube video clips, and support via the instant messaging facility on the app.Learning through mobile technology fits the demands of business and works with them to achieve their staff training needs with minimum disruption to the day-to-day running of the organisation. This type of learning is also beneficial for staff who can upskill themselves around their job and at a time that is convenient for them.

Recently some of the businesses on the project participated in a networking event to share their experiences on the mCommunity project and provide feedback on the app that will help inform future versions as well as develop new ideas and ways to deploy mobile technologies in the context of supporting and delivering learning within businesses today. If you are interested in learning more about the project, please email [email protected]

mCommunity is part funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Ireland Wales Cross Border Programme 2007-2013 (INTERREG 4A).
