The Powerlist is the brilliant creation of Michael Eboda who spotted the inspirational story to be told about the achievements of a previously hidden group. Back in 2009 a group of Powerlisters met to celebrate being recognised in this way. As we swapped stories we quickly realised two things about our success:

•itwasdueinlargeparttotheunselfishsupportofothers–friends,relatives,teachersandcolleagues;and

•itcouldencourageotherstopursuetheiraspirations.

Wedecidedthatwehadanobligationtochanneltheenergyunleashedbythelistintoaforceforgeneralgood–andthePowerlistFoundationwasborn.Wehopethatourexamplewillpersuadeyouofthatobligation–tohelpotherstofulfiltheirpotential.Ourvisionisaworldwherepersonalachievementdependsontalentandapplicationandisnotaffectedbycolour,race,genderorreligion.WearrangeactivitiessuchasthisLeadershipProgrammeto help tomorrow’s leaders accelerate their journeys to success. The people and companies who have combined to build this Programme for you show that it’s not just the Powerlist Foundation that is living up to our motto: “Sharing success with tomorrow’s leaders”. Take as much as you can from the next few days and make sure that you give even more back!

Best wishes

Welcome to the Powerlist Foundation Summer Leadership Programme 2013, sponsored by Deloitte. We are delighted to again be hosting this unique event.

About the programmeThe great American statesman Henry Kissinger once said that the task of a good leader is to get people from where they are to where they have never been, which is essentially what this three-and-a-half day leadership programme aims to do for its participants. They will be challenged, they will learn about themselves, they will be mentored by very successful people, and they will be told where their strengths and weaknesses lie and how to improve on both. Ultimately, they will emerge with a greater understanding of what it takes to be a leader in the 21st century.

Ken Olisa

A native of Nottingham, Ken’s technology career commenced in the 1970s at IBM having won a scholarship while an undergraduate at Cambridge. At IBM he held various posts before joining Wang Laboratories in 1981.

Following a period as Marketing Director for Europe, VP of US Marketing and then of Worldwide Marketing based in Boston, Ken was appointed Senior VP and General Manager of Europe, Africa and the Middle East (EAME) located in Brussels. He led the team which restored the EAME operation to profitability, following which he launched an unsuccessful MBO resulting in his departure in 1992!

Ken then founded Interregnum, the technology merchant bank leading it through its early growth; its entry into, and exit from, a joint venture with BDO Stoy Hayward; the AIM IPO in 2000; and the tricky years that followed the collapse of the dotcom boom.

At Interregnum, Ken worked at the forefront of the entrepreneur/technology growth cycle that began in the mid 1990s. As well as serving on the boards of many of Interregnum’s investments and advisory clients, Ken notched up some interesting firsts, including chairing the UK’s first publicly listed Internet Service Provider (ISP), Voss Net, on its admission to AIM and holding a similar position on the Board of DMATEK, the first Israeli technology company to be listed on the junior exchange. He was also a principal advisor to, and Director of, uDate.com which became one of the UK’s few large scale dotcom successes when it was sold to Barry Diller’s USA Interactive in 2003. Ken retired from Interregnum in 2006 and now runs Restoration Partners an independent, boutique technology merchant bank.

Ken’s knowledge and experience of businesses from the largest to the smallest, combined with his passion for, and knowledge of, technology and his willingness to speak his mind makes him much in demand as a public speaker and he has been widely recognised. He is past winner of the BVCA/Real Deals Private Equity Personality of the Year Award and of the Sunday Times UK Not for Profit Non Executive Director of the year. He appears in the UK’s top 10 most influential black men in the Powerlist 2012 and was recently named in Computer Weekly’s UK Tech 50 list of most influential people in UK IT and was the highest placed financial adviser in the list.

Edwin Broni-Mensah

Edwin Broni-Mensah is the founder and “The Water Guy” of GiveMeTap. In 2009, while Edwin was completing his PhD in Mathematics, he experienced the difficulties in accessing water when away from home and discovered the financial and environment impacts that drinking plastic bottled water caused. This compelled Edwin to envision a better way to help people in the UK reduce their waste and eliminate the social awkwardness in asking for tap water, while simultaneously providing the gift of clean water to those without through the funding of water projects.

As of November 2011, GiveMeTap has provided over 3,000 people with easier access to drinking water through giving partners in the UK and Africa. Through GiveMeTap, Edwin is on a mission to make clean water easily accessible to every human in the world in the most sustainable way possible.

Shaun Bailey

Shaun Bailey was born on the West Kensington Estate, London, in 1971, and grew up in a single-parent environment. He went to school at the local Henry Compton Secondary, followed by Paddington College, throughout which he practiced gymnastics, and trained with the Army Cadet Force, an experience he credits with helping him through the difficulties of life in such an area.

Throughout his childhood, he watched many of those he knew fall victim to the vicious cycle of drugs, poverty and disillusion, which has helped shape his outlook on politics and the problems faced by our society.

He went to University in London, gaining a degree in Computer Engineering, having worked as a security guard to finance his studies. After graduating, Shaun worked in drug-prevention, before founding his charity, My Generation, whose aim it is to allay the social problems faced by young people growing up in the Area. In addition to this, Shaun held the position of Chairman of Trustees at the Pepper Pot Day Centre until 2009.

Shaun entered Politics in 2005, by publishing a paper on solving the social crisis for the Centre for Policy Studies, of which he is a Research Fellow. He was chosen as the Conservative Party Candidate for Hammersmith by open primary, and narrowly lost out on election to Parliament in 2010, in a difficult race. Up until early 2013, Shaun was the Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Youth and Crime, working to help shape the Governmental agenda, in addition to his role as a Big Society Ambassador.

Shaun also writes regularly for various media outlets including The Sun, The London Evening Standard, The Times, The Guardian and The Independent, as well as appearing often on Newsnight, Question Time, and Sky News, where he held a regular paper review slot until 2010.

Senyo Aidam

In July 2012 I graduated from my undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Birmingham, having had the best 3 years of my life to date. I had the privilege of taking part in numerous activities on and off campus: serving in a variety of leadership roles; taking part in internships and training courses around the world; but most importantly learning about myself, my character and my interests.

In particular I have to thank the Powerlist Foundation for contributing to my personal development and self awareness through the Leadership Summer School. From being able to draw inspiration from the speakers, to talking about my MBTI at interview, the experience was simply invaluable. Being featured in the Future Leaders magazine has also had a positive impact: expanding my peer group; strengthened my professional network and providing me with a great deal of motivation.

I am currently on the Mars UK Commercial Graduate Development Programme, about to complete my first year in role. This has been a period of tremendous functional and personal development. My career and personal ambitions are still being shaped on a daily basis, so I look forward to what the future holds. I still maintain my enthusiasm for volunteering and supporting others where I can as I am very conscious of the help I have given throughout school and university.
