2 – BAE Alumni & Friends

Greetings from Raleigh! It is a pleasure to present the 2013 edition of the BAE Alumni and Friends Newsletter.

The department provides excellent undergraduate and graduate educational opportunities with programs that continue to be ranked in the top ten by US News. In the latest poll, NC State BAE was ranked 6th nation-ally. Efforts to slow undergraduate enrollment appear to have taken effect as enrollment remained steady over the past year. New matriculation criteria adopted by the College of Engineering has now been implemented

which should further help to stabilize enrollment. We are currently on target to have an undergraduate enrollment of about 250 with 60 new students each year. Graduate enrollment is expected to also be steady at 75 students this fall. Over the year, we graduated 55 BEs, 30 AETs, 4 MBAEs, 14 MS and 5 PhDs – Dr. Sneha Athalye, Dr. Yan Cui, Dr. Barbara Doll, Dr. Anushadevi Panneerselvam, and Dr. Amey Tilak. I am also pleased to announce that Katy Mazer was an NCSU valedictorian with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Congratula-tions, graduates.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Godfrey Gayle, MS, 1976; PhD, 1982, was named the 2012 Outstanding BAE alumnus. Dr. Wayne Yuan was named the recipient of the ASABE 2012 New Holland Young Researcher Award and Dr. Robert Evans was named the recipient of the 2013 Royce J. Tipton Award given by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Congratula-tions to Dr. Bill Hunt who was promoted to professor and Dr. Mike Burchell who was promoted to associate professor with tenure. Special congratula-tions are due Dr. Bill Hunt upon being named one of twenty University Faculty Scholars. Dr. Greg Jennings retired February 1 after 22 years. became the first minority institution in the US to have an accredited Agricul-tural/Biological Engineering degree program. Following this effort, Dr. Gayle became the first ABET Program evaluator to be named from a minority insti-tution. Gayle strongly encouraged students to be active in ASABE and to take the FE and PE examinations.

Over the past 12 years, Dr. Gayle secured over $1M to support student scholarship, development and participation in ASABE meetings. The product of this effort has been the placement of NC A&T - BE minority graduates – 9 in federal agencies, 14 in state government, 20 in private industry, 23 complet-ing MS, 6 completing PhDs, one dentistry degree from UNCCH, and one law degree from Harvard. Dr. Gayle was instrumental in recruiting the NRCS technology support center to Greens-boro, hence NC A&T is hosting one of three centers in the U.S. Dr. Gayle is currently involved in teaching and wa-ter resource research but is beginning to wind down as he prepares to enter the world of retirement.

Godfrey and his wife Cislyn have been married for 40 years and have two children, Godfrey and Oona.

A large-scale water quality project in New Bern, designed by members of N.C. State’s Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE), has received national recognition for its construction. Cape Fear Precast, LLC of Jacksonville was awarded second place for a local project in the National Precast Concrete Association’s Creative Use of Precast (CUP) Awards at the NCPA’s January trade show in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Jack Smith Creek Stormwater Project, one of the largest stormwater retrofits in the state, was designed by Cooperative Extension’s BAE Storm-water Group and involved the construction of a stormwater wetland to capture and treat runoff from a large watershed in New Bern. The innova-tive project can capture and treat the runoff from more than 1,000 acres of residential and commercial property.

The CUP Award recognizes those projects promoting innovative and cost-saving advantages of precast concrete. The W-shaped precast concrete outlet weir for the project, constructed by Cape Fear Precast, is modeled after a labyrinth weir design concept, said Kris Bass, P.E., Extension Associ-ate.

“The ‘W’ shape creates more flow length in a smaller width than a tradi-tional spillway. The design also incorporates flashboard risers that provide flexibility for controlling water levels in the wetland,” Bass explained. “This design and precast construction approach maximized control over critical features and created an efficient and economical installation in a challeng-ing setting.”

BAE became connected to the project “through a grant with the N.C. Ecosystem Enhancement Program, where we identified over 20 potential water quality projects in the Neuse River Basin,” said Bass.

“The Jack Smith Creek Wetland project was selected for implementa-tion due to its innovative approach and regional scale. BAE Extension was hired to lead the design work and development of a research effort at the site.” Bass noted that the size and complexity of the project made cooperation with project stakehold-ers critical. “Extension was able to help foster partnerships with the City of New Bern, Clean Wa-ter Management Trust Fund, and several government agencies that have all contributed to the project.” While the project construction was completed in December 2012, Bass said that BAE is currently installing monitoring equipment to collect

water quality samples. “Final planting took place in spring 2013, and we should be getting some results back by the end of the summer,” he said.

The project is also intended to set a new standard for treating stormwater at a watershed scale and be an education center for design and construction of best management practices in a coastal environment, according to the award write-up.

“Watershed scale stormwater projects have been successful in other areas and are gaining momentum in North Carolina,” Bass said. “The research that results from this project will not only expand the knowledge base in storm-water treatment, but also provide guidance on how to develop water quality goals balanced with ecological services and surrounding environments”.

When it rains, untreated stormwater can sweep pollutants into coastal waters, potentially endangering public health. Now, researchers from North Carolina State University have developed low-cost filtration systems that are concealed beneath sand dunes and filter out most of the bacteria that can lead to beach closures.

“It was not economically feasible to use a tract of beach front property to treat stormwater. Instead, we were able to devise a system that could be installed in an area that was not developable – underneath the dunes,” says Dr. Michael Burchell, an associate professor of biological and agricultural

engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper on the research.

Specifically, the so-called dune infiltration systems reduced the concentration of bacteria in stormwater runoff by 96 percent.

The researchers designed and built two such systems in Kure Beach, N.C. The systems consist of large, open-bottomed chambers that effectively divert the stormwater into dunes, which serve as giant sand filters. The systems are built under dunes that are covered with vegetation. The researchers then launched a three-year study to see how the filters would perform.

“We needed to know if these filters would affect the flow of ground wa-ter, affect dune erosion and whether they would effectively limit bacterial pollution,” Burchell says.

The filters “exceeded our expectations” at removing bacterial pollu-tion, Burchell says. And the study found minimal impact on ground water. There were short-term increases in ground water levels during storms, but those increases dissipated in anywhere from a few hours to two weeks.

“And we found that after replanting, the coverage of the dune vegeta-tion actually exceeded what had been there previously – which is important to dune stability,” Burchell says.

Burchell’s team has since installed a third dune infiltration system in a more developed location to see if the system is able to handle higher flow rates, water volume and concentrations of bacteria. That work is ongoing, but early results are promising.

The paper, “Long-term study of dune infiltration systems to treat coastal stormwater runoff for fecal bacteria,” was published in the March 2013 issue of Ecological Engineering. Lead author of the paper is former NC State grad student W. D. Price. Co-authors are Dr. Bill Hunt, professor of biological and agricul-tural engineering at NC State; and Dr. George Chescheir, an associate research professor of biological and agricultural engineering at NC State. The work was supported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and the filtration systems were installed by the Town of Kure Beach.
