Golf The Loyola Golf Knights sustained their first upset in several years in a very close 5 stroke loss to Columbia Prep on April 3, 2013. The Knights braved the cold and wind in their new season uniforms in a solid attempt at victory. To quote Captain Fernando Morett ’13, "We may have lost but we looked good." On April 4, 2013, the Varsity Golf Knights easily defeated Calhoun improving their season record to one and one. Giuseppe Zappala ’13 shot an extremely impressive even par 32 with Fernando Morett close behind with a 34. Jack Healy ’14 scored an excellent 36 with Dylan Peer ’15 earning a 39. Strong performances were also turned in by Alex Simons ’13 and Adrian Van Hauwermeiren ’13. After a strong performance against Browning, the Loyola Golf Knights increased their season record to 2-1 on April 10, 2013. Giuseppe Zappala led the team with an excellent even par 32. Fernando Morett followed close behind with a solid two over par 34. Also contributing to the win were Assistant Captain Cara Brinster ’14, Dylan Peer, Alex Simons; a stellar performance was also put in by Alex Junquera ’13. Softball The Lady Knights Varsity Softball team opened their 2013 season on April 3, 2013 defeating Trevor Day 18-4 putting the mercy rule in effect. Pitcher Deirdre Haney ’13 went the distance collecting 6 strikeouts while scoring 3 runs with 2 hits. Catcher Rebecca Petitti ’13 scored 2 runs and swung for 2 hits. Shortstop Erika Moffa ’14 drove a deep line drive in left center for a standup triple while scoring 3 times. Together the Lady Knights batted 17 hits forcing the Trevor Pitcher to tire. The Lady Knights continued to roll by setting the mercy-rule on UNIS on April 9, 2013. Pitcher of record Deidre Haney struck out 11 batters. Long ball hitting by Haney, a triple and a double by Nicole Seredenko ’15 broke the game wide open. The team is 2-0 so far this season. The Lady Knights defeated league opponent Friends Seminary 16-3 on April 11, 2013. The “Rookies” were movers and shakers as Nora Caliban ’16, Sommer Queally ’16, and Nicole Seredenko scored 4 runs. Julia Robinson ’16, Perby Senal ’15, and Aisling Coffey ’15 also scored. Erika Moffa made a terrific out backing up 3 rd baseman Caitlin Bonner ’15 on a throw from Rebecca Petitti to nab a Friends runner trying to steal. Pitcher Deirdre Haney struck out 10 hitters and is aiming for the Loyola pitching record for most strikeouts of all time. The team is 3-0. Track & Field The track and field teams inaugurated their season on April 4, 2013, competing in a NYCAL meet at blustery Astoria Park. In the 200 meters, Stephanie Anderson ’16 made an impressive scholastic debut with a first-place finish in her heat. In the 800 meters, a patient Helen Tolan ’14 located a strong kick in the final straightaway to take first place. Teressa Healy ’15 and Carolyn Muller ’14 led Loyola in the 1500 meters; while Stephanie Cianci ’14 and Andriana Ilnicki ’13 turned stirring performances in the 400 meters, perhaps track and field's toughest event. The boys found their own measure of success. Tommy Jorgensen ’13 turned heads with blazing first-place finishes in the 200 meters and 400 meters. In both events, he was followed by Jared Rodgers ’13 and Olivier van Hauwermeiren ’14. In the 800 meters, Loyola received fine performances from Tim Hurkmans ’13, Ned Taylor-D'Ambrosio ’13, and Bobby Schroeder ’15. Andrew Leone ’13 christened his season with a commanding first-place finish in the 1600 meters; he was followed by teammates Rob Reuland ’13 and Hunter Bulkeley ’14, who both turned in fine performances. In the 3200 meters, Juan Barragán ’13 ran with steady poise to lead Loyola. The 4x400-meter relay team of Olivier van Hauwermeiren, Ned Taylor-D'Ambrosio, Jared Rodgers, and Tommy Jorgensen ran to first place, as Jorgensen's blistering anchor lap propelled the team to victory. The girls' 4x400 team of Helen Tolan, Kayla Lee ’13, Teressa Healy, and Stephanie Cianci finished first as well, as Cianci's courageous straightaway kick proved instrumental in a thrilling finish. In the 400 meters, Larisse Bautista ’14 and Isabella Scarpelli ’15 ran strongly in their premier performances at this distance.
