Dear Donors and Friends,

2013 was a year of learning, renewing and setting plans to move forward. It was also one of Heritage Fund’s most successful years ever. Fiscal Stewardship

• Total assets of $61.6M, a 13% growth rate over 2012, and investment returns of 19.9%.

• $2.73M in new gifts, plus an additional $4M in estate or other non-cash gifts.

Positive Change

• Grants of $3M enabling local not-for-profit organizations to be agents of positive change and improve the quality of life in our community and in the future.

• Scholarships of more than $313,000 were awarded to Bartholomew County students.

Community Leadership

• The Outreach Committee continued to provide leadership and kept building the positive momentum around Welcoming Community.

• A grant to Leadership Bartholomew County helped launch a Phase 2 leadership class in partnership with the Institute for Coalition Building, part of the Community Education Coalition.

Promote Philanthropy

• Leverage charitable contributions through collaborations with partners like the City of Columbus on 9th Street Park, in-kind donations from contractors on the Hope Community Center and challenge funding to help Elizabethtown build a new playground.

• Provide leadership to ensure everyone feels welcome and engaged in the community.

We are deeply indebted to our donors for continued confidence and generous support of Heritage Fund. What a wonderful legacy we have inherited and what an awesome responsibility to keep it going strong in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you, Tracy Souza Kevina Schumaker

Heritage Fund Improving Quality-of-Life through Community Leadership

In 2013, Welcoming Community remained a focal area for the Outreach Committee and the Heritage Fund. Arts, Culture & Design are critical factors in the perception of a community as a broad-based, diverse, culturally vibrant place to live and work. To increase the welcoming community impact in Bartholomew County, The Outreach Committee issued a request for proposals to non-profit organizations to seek funding for arts, culture and design projects that would enhance the welcoming factor and further community collaboration. Seeking outcomes such as: increased understanding and appreciation of cultural differences, increased art accessibility, and broader and more inclusive participation from diverse groups – the response from the community was overwhelming.

With $40,000 allocated to the program, we received 21 requests totaling close to $150,000, demonstrating the popularity of this very competitive process.

The 2013 Welcoming Community Arts, Culture and Design grant award winners are:

• Developmental Services Inc. (DSI) – Tree of Inclusion, $8,000 • The African American Fund of Bartholomew County & the Granny

Heritage Fund Promoting Philanthropy in Innovative Ways

Every day, our donors make choices about how to best use their assets, knowledge, and time. Charitable giving can be a meaningful and enjoyable way of making a difference in the community when it is aligned with family values, life experiences, and interests.

The African American Fund of Bartholomew County is designed to help inspire and equip African Americans in Bartholomew County to achieve the AA Fund’s purpose through the following focus areas:

• Education • Leadership Development • Economic/Career Development • Health Awareness • Arts & Cultural Events

The Women’s Giving Circle of Bartholomew County (WGC) seeks to engage women of all generations and means in philanthropy. The circle seeks to empower women givers and make a positive change in the lives of women and families in Bartholomew County. In March, 2013, the group voted to distribute grant funds awarding grants in the focus areas of: Early Childhood Education, Self – Sufficiency for Women, Women in Crisis and Parental Support. Recipients were announced at the Women’s Giving Circle Annual Meeting in April of 2013.

Congratulations to our 2013 WGC grant award winners: • Expanding My World (Children Inc.) - $2,500 • Tutoring Program (Columbus Enrichment Program) - $2,500 • Homework with an Officer (Housing Authority) - $1,000 • SMART Girls (Boys and Girls Club) - $2,500 • Caregiving Support Programs (Just Friends) - $4,000 • "Women to Work" Resource Center (Turning Point) - $2,500

HFBC can accept Gifts of Grain directed to any charitable fund at the foundation or we are happy to talk with donors about starting a fund of their own. The Gifts of Grain program allows Bartholomew County farmers to help their community by contributing commodities such as corn, wheat or soy beans (whether it is a truckload, a percentage of your total grain delivery, or more) to any charitable fund of HFBC. This is a great way to honor your heritage and leave a legacy for future generations.

To learn more about these programs or make a donation visit www.heritagefundbc.org.

Heritage Fund Changing Lives through Education

Even before returning her paperwork to officially claim her Paul and Prudence Steinbarger Memorial Scholarship, Indiana University student Brennan Jarrard sent the Heritage Fund a handwritten thank you card the color of the sun.

“This award is truly life-changing for myself and my family, as we depend on awards and loans entirely to pay for my education. I will do all that is in my power to return the investment you have so generously bestowed on me by becoming the best teacher I can possibly become. Thank you for changing my life.”

Brenny’s words captured the essence of the Heritage Fund scholarship program, which recognized 90 high school and college students in 2013.

More than $313,000 in awards were distributed from 73 scholarship funds, including the new additions of the Ralph “Brownie” Brown and Phil Jackson Fast-Pitch Softball Memorial Scholarships. While awards ranged in dollar amount from $400 to $20,000 – their immeasurable value of helping students achieve their goal of postsecondary education was felt all the same. More than 113 scholarships were presented to a range of students -- from the broader awards for simply full-time coursework to the more specific ones including varsity athletes or biology majors.

Heritage Fund annually administers the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, established by Lilly Endowment, Inc. to raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana. Two Bartholomew County students are selected to receive full-tuition, required fees, and a $900 book stipend for eight semesters of study at an Indiana college of their choice. The 2013 Lilly Scholars were North students Erika Espinoza Romera, attending Ball State; and Zachary Ruehman, attending Purdue University.

In addition to the general scholarship program, the Heritage Fund also presented the annual Brown Music Competition where 19 student instrumentalists and vocalists were presented with $18,500 in scholarships for music education, lessons or camps.

Students weren’t the only honorees – educators were recognized in 2013, too. The Hanley Excellence in Teaching Awards, which acknowledge outstanding Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. elementary teachers, were presented to Jill Glover, second-grade teacher at Columbus Signature Academy -- Lincoln and Kathy Strickland, an educator in the deaf and hard of hearing program at Southside Elementary. The Reams Family Awards for

Excellence in Teaching, which recognize local private school teachers, were presented to Jennifer Bontrager-Hert, a Teacher Team Leader at North Star Montessori; Jeffrey Kyler, sixth-grade teacher at White Creek Lutheran and first-grade teacher Tonnie Lane of ABC-Stewart.

Heritage Fund Leaving a Legacy

Heritage Fund Memorial Scholarship In 2006 Heritage Fund’s Board of Directors created the Heritage Fund Memorial Scholarship Fund. This fund allows donors the opportunity to memorialize loved ones forever through a gift of $500 or more.

An annual scholarship of $1000 is awarded with recipients being selected from among those who apply for Heritage Fund Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to Bartholomew County residents based on academic performance, community and school involvement, and financial need.

Those being memorialized are listed below, and in the annual Heritage Fund Scholarship book, with the year they were added to the scholarship. Through remembering and honoring them in this permanent way, we are helping students of Bartholomew County both now and into the future.

Mr. and Mrs. W. Calvert Brand (2006) Mr. and Mrs. Albert Suhre (2006) Richard G. “Rick” Donnelly (2007) Heritage Fund (2007) – Dorel Juvenile Group gift to this fund in honor of Heritage Fund Joyce Tull Hutcheon (2008) Helen and Ernest Stadler (2008) Clif Blake (2009) Abby Brinkman (2009) Kevin Taggart (2010) Catherine Jurgemeyer (2011) Coral Mae Whipker (2012)

The BARTHOLOMEW SOCIETY allows individuals to plan for future gifts to the community through estate plans which build or add to endowed funds at Heritage Fund. Through the Bartholomew Society, Heritage Fund is able to acknowledge these individuals during their lifetime.

For many, a gift from their estate is the most meaningful gift ever. It preserves their family name and creates a charitable legacy that supports the causes that matter to them and their family forever. A charitable gift to the “Bartholomew Society” of the Heritage Fund also allows children to continue family involvement in charitable grant making.

Heritage Fund is grateful for the individuals who, through thoughtful planning, have made provisions for these future gifts. We thank the members of the Bartholomew Society for their foresight and commitment to the Bartholomew County community.

Many individuals have quietly made Heritage Fund a beneficiary in their estate planning but have not informed us. Others have consented to have their names included in the list below with the hope that it will encourage others. As of December 31, 2013, Heritage Fund is honored to recognize 96 Bartholomew Society members.
