    Istanbul, Turkey

    In the Meanwhile...

I didn't follow the details about this widespread

protest in Turkey. I guess I am with the rioters,

but I don't know enough to express any meaningful

    thought on the matter.

One thing that is clear to me, is this fact that

these riots are incredibly photogenic. If you

Google under "Istanbul News", a flood of

    (photographically) stunning images comes out.

In the last months/years we had riots in Cairo, in

Tripoli, all these so-called "Arab Springs". To

launch a civil war in the Instagram age, is

definitely an interesting theme to think about.

Anyway, back to Istanbul I don't know why and

how, but surely the revolutionar art director is a

    cool chap.

    Sassuolo

    Raw Edges at Mutina

First stop of our tour of ceramic world is atMutina. A very fascinating (new) company, based

    inSassuolo.

    http://www.mutina.it/

Very interesting business model: no machines, no

workers. They have Patricia Urquiola as art-

director, a team of talented designers who come

up with new series on regular bases + a network of

local contractors (terzisti) who are activated uponnecessity.

You can have an innovative product, or you can

have an innovative business model (or both).

Mutina is fascinating beacuse it deals with ceramic

tiles like contemporary fashion business. Lots of

new (fashionable) series, quick production, lean

    logistic.

InMutina, they haveall kind ofvery interesting

tiles and collections and posh stuff. Of course,

being myself an architect, I was very impressed by

their headquarters. An industrial sbang, built on a

concrete system patented by Angelo Mangiarotti in

    the 1960's.

Of course, Patricia Urquiola. We all love

    Phenomenon

"...In this collaboration with Mutina, I have

pondered in designing ceramic tiles, which express

the textures of the material derived from nature.

My intention is not to manipulate the appearance

of nature, but to create a design, which stirs one's

heart and imagination and remains deep inside

    one's memory.

    'Phenomenon' integrates small substances and

produces both depth and expanse. various

expressions, such as honeycomb, snow crystal,

icicle, plant cells evoke one's memory of the

scenery in nature. the flooring series, 'snow',

adopt the texture of japanese paper.

    Marazzi

    Effetto Legno

    (Wooden Effect)

The most impressive thing out of our visit at

Marazzi, is this new (extremely advanced)

product. It took them years, but they were finally

able to produce a ceramic tile that looks like

wood. Very perfect effect. Digital print + 3d effectfor a perfect result.

This is very interesting. Because they produce

million of these tiles, and people really like (buy)

    them.

From technological point of view it is perfect.

From commercial point of view, it is even more

perfect. The only thing that is odd is this fact that

all this story goes against any possible design

    enormous universe.

    Murder is my business.

Weegee was the pseudonym of Arthur Fellig (June

    12, 1899 December 26, 1968), a photographer

and photojournalist, known for his stark black and

    white street photography.

Weegee worked in the Lower East Side of New

York City as a press photographer during the 1930s

and '40s, and he developed his signature style by

following the city's emergency services and

    documenting their activity.

Much of his work depicted unflinchingly realistic

scenes of urban life, crime, injury and death.

Weegee published photographic books and also

worked in cinema, initially making his own short

films and later collaborating with film directors

such as Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick.

    Atomium

    Stefi goes to Bruxelles...

Tomorrow I go for three days to Bruxelles toexplain to EU people what we are doing (between

Whoami, Design 101 and other various things

related to new forms of education).

Very excited (I am). Because I will go up theAtomium (never been there before).

What I will talk about? Having to make a concise

description it could be something like:

Confucius taught us a very simple truth: "If I hear,

    I forget. If I see, I remember. If I make, I

undertstand". This was true 2500 years ago as well

    as today.

But today we have new and social media. Does this

imply some changes in the above mentioned truth?

What kind of changes? Positive, negative, both?

Think to McLuhan. "The medium is the message" hesaid.

But, what happens when the community becomes

    the message?
